Priority # 5 - Honour One Another

Todd Dugard

Proverbs
3:9-10; 20:3; 22:1-5; 25:27

It’s a family thing to honour one another…

…by how you manage your cash (Proverbs 3:9-10)

…by how you deal with conflict (Proverbs 20:3)

…by how you establish your character (Proverbs 22:1-5; 25:27)

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to honour one another.

Small Group Questions

1.    How have I done in honouring God with the first fruits of my labour (my finances)?  What about the specific areas of taxes, spending (fixed expenses and disposable), saving (short and long term; investments) and giving?  What does my spending say about who/what I honour in my life?  Do I recognize the link between me honouring God with my finances and God honouring me?  Explain.
2.    In the last month has there been some level of conflict in my home?  Remembering back to the sermon, do I already utilize some of the conflict management T.O.O.L.S.?  What areas do I need to improve upon?
3.    Do I need to get my own way?  When was the last time I set aside self in place of someone else?

Breakout

1.    How have I done with acting in humility in my relationships?  In what aspects do I need to continue to set aside self in place of someone else or God?
2.    Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 15:33b.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God would help you seek his glory above your own.

Priority # 4 - Live the Truth

Todd Dugard

Proverbs
4:20-27

It’s a family thing to live the truth.

§  With your ears, hear truth (v20)

§  With your heart, believe truth (v21-23)

§  With your mouth, speak truth (v24)

§  With your eyes, seek truth (v25)

§  With your feet, follow truth (v26-27)

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to live the truth.

Small Group Questions

1.     How attentive am I to God’s counsel?  What things distract me from understanding God’s wisdom’s in Scripture (in my studying and mediating on his Word)?  What specific steps can I take to better ensure I am attentive to God’s Word?

2.      What am I doing with the knowledge of God’s Word?  Do I trust the Word and do I allow it to impact my thoughts, actions and emotions?  How so?

3.     Do I engage in coarse talk, trivial talk, loose talk, gossip, and/or slanderous talk?  Is there a disconnect between my Christian walk and my speech?  When has my speech been less than I would desire?

4.     Am I fixing my eyes and doggedly following the truth?  Am I all in for Jesus Christ or do I try to live a life in my own strength?

Breakout

1.     Am I living the truth?  What evidence of this is there in my life?

2.     Commit to memorizing 1 passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 4:24.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God will help you seek after his truth and that your words would be seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6).

Priority # 3 - Forgive Freely

Todd Dugard

Proverbs
17:9

It’s a family thing to freely forgive one another.

1.     Who it’s for …you

2.     What it costs …surrender

3.     Why it’s needed …rebellious hearts

4.     How it happens …your initiative

5.     What it shows …genuine love

6.     Why it’s so hard …pride

7.     What it overcomes …heartache and division

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to freely forgive one another.

Small Group Questions

1.     Conflict, offense and hurt are part of a sin-tainted world, but how I respond is a reflection of my walk with Christ.  “Someone has to pay the price for every offense” but I need to freely forgive; I need to surrender.  When was the last time I covered an offense?   How do I typically respond to offenses?

2.     Remember back to the filter illustration from the sermon, am I dealing with offense and conflict in a God honouring manner?

3.     What are some specific ways in which my rebellious heart has been manifested in dealing with conflict and offense?  Do I recognize my own need for forgiveness?  Do I see opportunities for my spiritual growth and for deepening relationships?

4.     There is no love without forgiveness.  My work for Christ is diminished if my relationships are not based on love.  Think of a specific time when pride impacted my forgiveness.  How did it impact my relationship?

Breakout

1.     Think of specific times when I have gossiped about an offense.  Ask God for forgiveness.

2.     Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 17:9.

Transforming Prayer

·      Pray that God would help you to freely forgive specific relationships that remain in conflict.

Priority # 2 - Pledge your loyalty

Todd Dugard

Proverbs

It’s a family thing to remain loyal to one another.

§  See it in God’s relationship to us (16:6a)

§  Appreciate its rarity (20:6)

§  Make it happen in your relationship to others (3:3)

§  Receive the blessing that results from getting this right (3:4; 21:21)

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to remain loyal to one another

Small Group Questions

1.     I see loyalty demonstrated in God’s relationship with me.  So, the starting point of getting my relationships back on track must be Jesus Christ.  Have I given all things over to Christ?  In what areas am I still struggling with giving over to Christ?

2.     When was a specific time when I broke loyalty with someone?  What impact did it have on that individual, others and myself?

3.     Recall the definition of loyalty from the sermon: “If it is still there when, by every human measure, it shouldn’t be, then it is true loyalty.”  When have I demonstrated steadfast love for someone else?  Was it demonstrated through good times and bad?

4.     Remembering back to the sermon, do I display the five proofs of loyalty?

Breakout

What things do I need to confess to Jesus?  What specific things can I do to get my relationships back on track?

Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 16:6.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God would help you get relationships back on track, showing you what you need to do.  Pray for those whose marriages may be struggling.

Priority # 1 - Worship together

Todd Dugard

Proverbs 30

It’s a family thing to worship together.

So ask,

“Does my family really know GOD?” (v1-4; cf. 1:7)

“Are we acting on the truth of his Word?” (v5-6)

“Are we seeing the obstacles in the way?” (v7-17)

“Are we standing in awe of who he is?” (v18-31)

And establish the priority…

“Our family thing is to worship the LORD our GOD!” (v32-33)

Small Group Questions

1.     Do I have a real, intimate, and growing relationship with Jesus?  How am I helping the next generation transfer factual/intellectual knowledge into experiential knowledge of God?

2.      “Every word of God proves true” (v.5a).  What am I doing to ensure that I “take refuge in him” (v.5b)?  What are some specific things that I can do act upon the word of God?  When was the last time I memorized Scripture?

3.     What are some specific things that I do that undermines my worship and obedience to Jesus?  What idols have I created in my life?

4.     What can I do to strengthen my relationship with God?  How would my actions change if I acknowledged Christ as the head of my house?

Breakout

1.     Thinking back to the discussion in question 3, note some specific consequences of my disobedience and halfhearted worship on my family and myself.

2.     Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 30:5-6.

Transforming Prayer

·      Pray that you would more fully submit yourself to Christ as the head of your family.

Vision Sunday
(message, elders' vision, prayer)

You will be my witnesses

Todd Dugard

Acts 1:6-11

If I’m an on-mission witness of Jesus Christ…

§  I’m eager for it all to be over (v6-7)

§  I’m powered by the Holy Spirit (v8a)

§  I’m charged with telling everyone about him (v8b)

§  I’m pressed to get on with it (v9-11a)

§  I’m filled with hope as I do (v11b)

Small Group Questions

1.     Do I recognize the equipping of the Holy Spirit in my life?  What are some specific examples of how God has empowered me to accomplish his mission?

2.     Am I thankful for, and fully utilizing, the talents, gifts and abilities God has given me or do I desire other ones?  What specific Scriptures illuminate this issue?

3.     Do I behave like someone eagerly anticipating the return of Jesus Christ?  If I did, what would my evangelism look like?

4.     Am I ready to give it all for the glory of God?  When have I risked something to share the gospel (i.e. friendship, family, job, etc)?

Breakout

§  Am I an on-mission witness for Jesus Christ?

§  Do I live in the hope of Jesus Christ’s return?

Transforming Prayer

§  Pray that God would grant you humility to serve others and share the gospel.

Things Not Seen

When Faith is Made Sight

Todd Dugard

Genesis 48-50

You’ll know that faith is enough for you when…

§  You are passing on a godly legacy to the next generation (48:1-49:27)

§  You are honouring the previous generation (49:28-50:14)

§  You are finding freedom from your own sin-tainted past (50:15-21)

§  You are increasingly looking for and longing after what is beyond this life (50:22-26)

Small Group Questions

1.     Am I passing on a godly legacy?  What am I investing in – do I seek to store up earthly or eternal things?  What specific things have I done to leave a godly legacy to those around me?

2.     How am I doing at honouring my mother and father?  Do I recognize that honouring my parents is obedience to God?  What are some specific instances when this has been difficult?  How can I better honour my parents?

3.     Do I identify with Joseph or his brothers? Do I live as someone freed from the curse of sin or do I live as though I am still shackled to the sin?  What are some specific Scriptures that can teach me about how to respond?

4.     Faith is believing the Word of God and acting upon it, no matter how I feel, knowing God promises a good result.  Am I focusing on eternity and glorifying God or do I allow emotions and circumstance to draw me away?  How can I better ensure I am focused on God?

Breakout

1.     Do my words build-up or tear down?

2.     What can I do to leave a godly legacy?

Transforming Prayer

·      Pray for God’s protection on his church and that we would have a bold witness for his glory.

Resurrection Sunday

The Wonder of the Empty Tomb

Todd Dugard

You can’t ignore GOD or the wonder of the empty tomb

…because of your sin, you are SEPARATED from him and from his power

Jesus Christ died and was raised from that tomb

                  SUBSTITUTING himself for us

and making it possible for you to experience the power of the empty tomb for yourself

To get that, you must BELIEVE the tomb is empty

…and you will have LIFE and experience the wonder of the empty tomb

Small Group Questions

1.     John’s Gospel has a number of examples of personal, one-on-one encounters with Jesus.  Consider the encounters with Nicodemus (John 3:1-21) and the woman at the well (John 4:1-26).  When have you had similar reactions to the gospel?  If you were sharing the gospel with a friend who reacted in confusion about their need for a Saviour how would you respond?

2.     Jesus is the only way to salvation.  What are some specific times that I struggled with the idea of salvation through faith?  What can be done to overcome those issues?

3.     Jesus brings life to all who accepted him.  Do I live in the resurrection power of Jesus Christ, or do my past, sin and failures, keep me bound in gloom?  What are some specific Scriptures that point me to resting in Christ for all things?

Breakout

1.     What are specific things that I allow to take the place of Jesus in my life?  How can I change this pattern?

Transforming Prayer

Pray for revival in Barrie and Simcoe County.

Things Not Seen

The Power of Faith

Todd Dugard

Genesis 42-47

The power of faith is seeing God at work, forgiving as he forgives, abounding in grace.

§  Understand that in a sin-sick world, offense happens (42:1-17)

§  Trust God that “truth and time walk hand in hand” (42:18-22)

§  Reject grace-killing guilt, fear and shame (42:23-43:15)

§  Watch GOD do his work through every offense (43:16-25)

§  Forgive freely whether you’re asked for it or not (43:26-44:34)

§  Pour out grace as if the offense never happened (45:1-15)

§  Rest in the confidence of “things not seen” (45:16-47:31)

Small Group Questions

1.     In a sin-sick world, offense happens.  How do I respond to offenses and hurts done to me?  Think about a recent offense; did I respond as a person of faith?  How might that look?  Do I trust that God will deal with the offense in his time?

2.     Guilt, fear and shame kill the grace of God in my life.  God shows me undeserved grace; do I show it to others?  How can I love others the same way Jesus loves me?  Think of an outstanding offense – how can you go about demonstrating Jesus’ love to that person?

3.     Every difficult situation I go through can be used by God to advance his glory in my life.  How has God used difficulties to bring himself glory through my life?

4.     Am I prepared to allow God to act on my behalf or do I want to be the one in control?  How can I respond in faith in difficult situations?  What would this look like?

Breakout

·     What are some specific situations in which I have not yet freely forgiven someone?  Use this time to confess unforgiveness and ask God to help you forgive.

Transforming Prayer

·      Pray that God would help you to live a life in which you freely forgive.

Things Not Seen

The Gain of Faith

Todd Dugard

Genesis 41

Are you showing the gain of faith in your life?

                  Gain #1 – GOD using you (v1-15)

Gain #2 – GOD being glorified in you (v16-32)

Gain #3 – GOD giving you wisdom (v33-36)

Gain #4 – GOD showing you his favour (v37-49, 53-57)

                  Gain #5 – GOD healing you (v50-52)

Small Group Questions

1.     Am I strong in the ways of Jesus Christ?  Do I trust that living a faith-filled life will result in God using me to do great things for his glory?  What gains of faith do I have in my life?  Provide specific examples.

2.     It is not just that God can use me, but that God would be glorified through me.  It’s not my abilities but God’s (cf. v.16).  My hope cannot be in myself; it must be in God (cf. Col. 1:27).  Can I see God working in me and through me?  What evidence is there that God’s glory is manifested?  What role do I have in that?

3.     If I live by faith God will give me wisdom.  God’s wisdom starts with worshiping God and being attentive to the things of God.  In which areas of my life do I need to gain the wisdom of God (relationships, service, spiritual disciplines, etc.)?

4.      In the hard times I may find it difficult to continue to trust God.  What about the good times?  Do I treat God with contempt during the seasons of blessing, believing I am self-sufficient?  How can I remain faithful to God during the times of blessings?  How can I continue to rest in Christ for all things?

5.     If I’m living a life of perpetual sadness, bitterness, or anger over some past hurt, then I am not living by faith but by sight.  Do I still cling to my past (hurts, pains, relational upsets)?  Consider 2 Corinthians 5:17.  What concrete steps can I take to overcome the hurts of my former life?

Breakout

·     Have I forgotten about God for a season because he has been too good to me?  What specific steps can I take during the season of blessing to grow a deeper faith?

Transforming Prayer

·      Pray that God would use the Good Friday and Easter services to be a blessing to those who do not personally know Jesus Christ.
