2.    Read Philippians 3:13.  Am I looking expectantly for God to move in powerful ways in my life and his Church?  What specific things and people can I pray about over the summer?
3.    Read John 1:39.  Do I have a “come and see” attitude to spreading the gospel?  What might this look like?

Breakout

1.    What areas of my life have I seen growth in over the past year?
2.    What areas of my life will I work on over the summer and next year?

Priority # 7 - Love always

Todd Dugard

Proverbs
8:17, 10:12, 13:24, 15:9

It's a family thing to love always by...
  • Seeking God for relationship (Proverbs 8:17)
  • Overcoming the inevitable hurts (Proverbs 10:12)
  • Helping each other to maturity (Proverbs 13:24)
  • Pursuing godly living (Proverbs 15:9)
Small Group Questions

1.    My identity, fulfillment and purpose are in Jesus Christ.  Do my actions demonstrate a deep and abiding relationship with God?  Do I struggle with simply keeping the rituals of the Christian life without being rooted in a relationship with Christ?  What might be some signs of this struggle?  What specific things can I do to make sure my identity is in God?
2.    Read Proverbs 10:12.  How do I respond to hurts?  What are some ways that I can choose to respond in love in the midst of conflict?
3.    What are some ways that I can help others grow in their relationship with Christ?  Have I neglected receiving discipline because I am content with the status quo?  What does that say about my priorities and focus for my family and myself?
4.    Is it evident to those around me that I love God?  What might others say about my pursuits?  What might they say is my life’s focus?

Breakout

1.    In what areas of life have I failed to show love?  What specific things can I do to show others love more often?
2.    Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 8:17.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God would help you to demonstrate love to those around you.

Reliable words

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to speak well of each other.

Small Group Questions

1.    Communication is so important in our relationships.  How am I doing at communicating love in my relationships?  Read Proverbs 15:4 - Do I crush the spirit or give life?  Be honest and give an example.
2.    Have I been complacent with the issue of gossip?  Do I engage in gossiping about others?  When was the last time I listened to gossip, and thereby became a part of the gossiping? Thinking back to the sermon, what specific actions can I take to raise myself to a new standard?
3.    Thinking back to the sermon, with which spirit-crushing tendencies do I struggle?  How can I put into practice the life-giving principles from the Proverbs?  Think of a specific example of when you were a spirit-crusher and how you could respond/act in the future to give life.

Breakout

1.    What did I learn about myself from the sermon?  Choosing one of the seven priorities from the sermon, what specific things can I put into action to speak well of others?
2.    Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 10:19.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God would help you to speak life-giving and not spirit-crushing words.

Change Starts with Prayer

Mike Armstrong

Colossians 1:3-8

All great change begins with prayer. Am I praying for the right things?

1. Am I thankful for what God is doing? (v. 3)

2. Am I seeing change where it counts (v. 4-5a)

3. Am I focused on the gospel? (v. 5b-6)

4. Am I lifting up my fellow servants (v. 7-8)

Small Group Questions

1.    Jesus can and will eventually change everything.  Change starts with prayer.  Am I praying for the right things?  Am I thankful for what God is doing?  Do I have a grateful attitude in my prayer life?  In the face of difficulty and challenges can I still be thankful for what God is doing – or am I blinded to God’s work?
2.    When was the last time I prayed for things that are really important?  Do I plead with God to increase my faith, love and hope?  If I was honest with myself, do I really want to see this change in my life?
3.    Do I thank God for what he’s done to save me and praise him for his grace and how he continues to change me?  What are some areas in my life that I need to preach the gospel to myself (e.g. despair, bitterness, fear, sexual purity, etc)?
4.    Am I faithful to pray for other Christians?  When was the last time I prayed for our church leaders; each member of my small group?

Breakout

What do I fear in praying for real, fundamental, life-transforming, change?  What has been the barrier to fervent prayers?

Transforming Prayer

Pray for the elders, pastors, church staff and small group leaders.

Priority # 5 - Honour One Another

Todd Dugard

Proverbs
3:9-10; 20:3; 22:1-5; 25:27

It’s a family thing to honour one another…

…by how you manage your cash (Proverbs 3:9-10)

…by how you deal with conflict (Proverbs 20:3)

…by how you establish your character (Proverbs 22:1-5; 25:27)

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to honour one another.

Small Group Questions

1.    How have I done in honouring God with the first fruits of my labour (my finances)?  What about the specific areas of taxes, spending (fixed expenses and disposable), saving (short and long term; investments) and giving?  What does my spending say about who/what I honour in my life?  Do I recognize the link between me honouring God with my finances and God honouring me?  Explain.
2.    In the last month has there been some level of conflict in my home?  Remembering back to the sermon, do I already utilize some of the conflict management T.O.O.L.S.?  What areas do I need to improve upon?
3.    Do I need to get my own way?  When was the last time I set aside self in place of someone else?

Breakout

1.    How have I done with acting in humility in my relationships?  In what aspects do I need to continue to set aside self in place of someone else or God?
2.    Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 15:33b.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God would help you seek his glory above your own.

Priority # 4 - Live the Truth

Todd Dugard

Proverbs
4:20-27

It’s a family thing to live the truth.

§  With your ears, hear truth (v20)

§  With your heart, believe truth (v21-23)

§  With your mouth, speak truth (v24)

§  With your eyes, seek truth (v25)

§  With your feet, follow truth (v26-27)

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to live the truth.

Small Group Questions

1.     How attentive am I to God’s counsel?  What things distract me from understanding God’s wisdom’s in Scripture (in my studying and mediating on his Word)?  What specific steps can I take to better ensure I am attentive to God’s Word?

2.      What am I doing with the knowledge of God’s Word?  Do I trust the Word and do I allow it to impact my thoughts, actions and emotions?  How so?

3.     Do I engage in coarse talk, trivial talk, loose talk, gossip, and/or slanderous talk?  Is there a disconnect between my Christian walk and my speech?  When has my speech been less than I would desire?

4.     Am I fixing my eyes and doggedly following the truth?  Am I all in for Jesus Christ or do I try to live a life in my own strength?

Breakout

1.     Am I living the truth?  What evidence of this is there in my life?

2.     Commit to memorizing 1 passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 4:24.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God will help you seek after his truth and that your words would be seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6).

Priority # 3 - Forgive Freely

Todd Dugard

Proverbs
17:9

It’s a family thing to freely forgive one another.

1.     Who it’s for …you

2.     What it costs …surrender

3.     Why it’s needed …rebellious hearts

4.     How it happens …your initiative

5.     What it shows …genuine love

6.     Why it’s so hard …pride

7.     What it overcomes …heartache and division

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to freely forgive one another.

Small Group Questions

1.     Conflict, offense and hurt are part of a sin-tainted world, but how I respond is a reflection of my walk with Christ.  “Someone has to pay the price for every offense” but I need to freely forgive; I need to surrender.  When was the last time I covered an offense?   How do I typically respond to offenses?

2.     Remember back to the filter illustration from the sermon, am I dealing with offense and conflict in a God honouring manner?

3.     What are some specific ways in which my rebellious heart has been manifested in dealing with conflict and offense?  Do I recognize my own need for forgiveness?  Do I see opportunities for my spiritual growth and for deepening relationships?

4.     There is no love without forgiveness.  My work for Christ is diminished if my relationships are not based on love.  Think of a specific time when pride impacted my forgiveness.  How did it impact my relationship?

Breakout

1.     Think of specific times when I have gossiped about an offense.  Ask God for forgiveness.

2.     Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 17:9.

Transforming Prayer

·      Pray that God would help you to freely forgive specific relationships that remain in conflict.

Priority # 2 - Pledge your loyalty

Todd Dugard

Proverbs

It’s a family thing to remain loyal to one another.

§  See it in God’s relationship to us (16:6a)

§  Appreciate its rarity (20:6)

§  Make it happen in your relationship to others (3:3)

§  Receive the blessing that results from getting this right (3:4; 21:21)

Make the pledge: It’s our family thing to remain loyal to one another

Small Group Questions

1.     I see loyalty demonstrated in God’s relationship with me.  So, the starting point of getting my relationships back on track must be Jesus Christ.  Have I given all things over to Christ?  In what areas am I still struggling with giving over to Christ?

2.     When was a specific time when I broke loyalty with someone?  What impact did it have on that individual, others and myself?

3.     Recall the definition of loyalty from the sermon: “If it is still there when, by every human measure, it shouldn’t be, then it is true loyalty.”  When have I demonstrated steadfast love for someone else?  Was it demonstrated through good times and bad?

4.     Remembering back to the sermon, do I display the five proofs of loyalty?

Breakout

What things do I need to confess to Jesus?  What specific things can I do to get my relationships back on track?

Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 16:6.

Transforming Prayer

Pray that God would help you get relationships back on track, showing you what you need to do.  Pray for those whose marriages may be struggling.

It's a Family Thing - Proverbs to know; Priorities to make

Priority # 1 - Worship together

Todd Dugard

Proverbs 30

It’s a family thing to worship together.

So ask,

“Does my family really know GOD?” (v1-4; cf. 1:7)

“Are we acting on the truth of his Word?” (v5-6)

“Are we seeing the obstacles in the way?” (v7-17)

“Are we standing in awe of who he is?” (v18-31)

And establish the priority…

“Our family thing is to worship the LORD our GOD!” (v32-33)

Small Group Questions

1.     Do I have a real, intimate, and growing relationship with Jesus?  How am I helping the next generation transfer factual/intellectual knowledge into experiential knowledge of God?

2.      “Every word of God proves true” (v.5a).  What am I doing to ensure that I “take refuge in him” (v.5b)?  What are some specific things that I can do act upon the word of God?  When was the last time I memorized Scripture?

3.     What are some specific things that I do that undermines my worship and obedience to Jesus?  What idols have I created in my life?

4.     What can I do to strengthen my relationship with God?  How would my actions change if I acknowledged Christ as the head of my house?

Breakout

1.     Thinking back to the discussion in question 3, note some specific consequences of my disobedience and halfhearted worship on my family and myself.

2.     Commit to memorizing one passage from Scripture each week through this study.  Consider Proverbs 30:5-6.

Transforming Prayer

·      Pray that you would more fully submit yourself to Christ as the head of your family.

§  I’m powered by the Holy Spirit (v8a)

§  I’m charged with telling everyone about him (v8b)

§  I’m pressed to get on with it (v9-11a)

§  I’m filled with hope as I do (v11b)

Small Group Questions

1.     Do I recognize the equipping of the Holy Spirit in my life?  What are some specific examples of how God has empowered me to accomplish his mission?

2.     Am I thankful for, and fully utilizing, the talents, gifts and abilities God has given me or do I desire other ones?  What specific Scriptures illuminate this issue?

3.     Do I behave like someone eagerly anticipating the return of Jesus Christ?  If I did, what would my evangelism look like?
