Well, it was an AMAZING Sunday of worship! The Black-Gospel inspired worship was off the charts! So good. Pastor Todd was right to fire up another song at the end to close off the service.  I am so grateful for the time that our expanded team (there were twenty musicians and vocalists on stage) put into making that an unforgettable morning of worship together.

The powerful worship set up a powerful time of conviction in the Word of God. Pastor Todd brought us message two of seven in the "It's a Family Thing" series in Proverbs.  The bumper video that started the sermon was timely given that the Habs and Leafs played the night before.

There's no question that fans of both teams are LOYAL to the end and that was the subject matter for this message: "It's a family thing to pledge your loyalty to one another." Here are the five proofs of loyalty Pastor Todd shared:
1. Give it up. (Sacrifice);
2. Say it out loud. (“I’m for you.” “I love you.”);
3. Follow through. (Words are not enough.  Actions required!);
4. Take the fall. (He said this was the hardest!  Let my reputation suffer? – Hard!); and
5. Remain under. (Will I still be here when the smoke clears?).

Good stuff for sure. If you have not yet heard or seen the message, check out the audio or video (ready soon) from Sunday.

Sad to say, this is my last Monday blog about Sunday.  Things are changing up at the Harvest office in terms of how information is flowing. The number of people reading this blog each week is super small and that has sealed our fate. I'm grateful to those of you who have been faithfully taking the time to read this post each week, but there just aren't enough of you to carry on. New ways of getting the message to you are being unveiled in the coming weeks, so watch for that.

It's been fun!

Soli Deo Gloria,

Eutychus

I am so grateful for a church that doesn’t hold back the truth I need to hear.

Pastor Todd got us started yesterday on a new series that promises to give us all some help with our families.  Seems pretty needed today.  We started out with this family worship video that I know you all want to see again.

By the end of Sunday’s message, we were encouraged to make a pledge and establish a new priority…”It’s our family thing to worship the Lord our God.” That vertical focus is where we all need to start if we’re looking for something to change in our homes.

I love that he made it clear too that even as single adults we’re in a family of two.

If you had to miss our time together on Sunday, you can listen or watch online. And make plans to take in the rest of the series.

The worship team led us in some solid worship and got us to belt it out as we sang, “At Your Name”.  Such a great song! “Yahweh, Yahweh…we love to SHOUT your name, O LORD!”

I heard that two people who came for worship professed faith in Christ at the end of the service. God is at work!

And word is that the new church plant, Harvest Bible Chapel Toronto West had a great launch on Sunday. Praise God for that. Pray for Pastor Jason as he leads this new church.

That’s it for me.  Enjoy your week.

"I'm eager for it all to be over."  That's what really stood out to me this Vision Sunday as we talked about what it means to be on-mission witnesses of Jesus Christ.  Don't you just want the Lord to return already?!  It's not hard to imagine how the disciples felt in Acts 1 as Jesus ascends and they're all wondering when he's coming back… we're there too. We want him back.  As much as we know we have a mission to accomplish in this life and our hearts are becoming more passionate about that, how about Jesus just returns now?  Sounds like a plan to me.

It's good to hope for that, but again - we've got work to do now.  So what does that look like like for Harvest Bible Chapel?  What is the vision of our elders going forward?  Well Pastor Todd outlined it for us:

1. REVIVAL wherever God would send us… starting with us
2. One thousand churches planted in our Fellowship in our lifetime
3. A Harvest church or campus within a 20-minute drive for every person in Simcoe County
4. A more permanent home base in Barrie to facilitate our vision and mission

I love how Todd put it: all of this is an impossible task - but that's what makes it so perfect.  God is the only one who can do this.  This is not something that can be accomplished by the power of man.  It is up to God to do the impossible and up to us to pray and get on board with God's vision.  (If you missed it, you can watch the message and the elders' vision report and the prayer time online. And if you'd like to contact the elders you can do that at )

So let's pray this week.  Pray for our elders as they lead.  Pray that what we desire to take place will begin in our own hearts.  It's an exciting time to be a part of what God's doing here.  Looking forward to more.

Have a great week.

Another great Sunday yesterday; so great to see people still fired up that our God is living and active! We don't need to wait for Easter to celebrate that!

What's with all these amazing new female vocalists? Where are they coming from? Blown away week after week by the giftedness on stage. That new girl, Kelsey, really sang her heart out though. So encourage by the special ("Oceans") that she sang before the message. What a great song and great way to recap this series, reminding us that no matter what, our faith should be in the name of Jesus Christ.

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand

Pastor Todd certainly brought the Word today too. What a great way to cap off this series. If you missed the message, the video is available on the website. I was so encouraged to hear several people share in each service how the Lord is using these messages to impact the lives of families in our church.

Pastor Todd included a commercial in Sunday's message, letting us know that we'll be starting a family series on April 21.  Looking forward to that and privileged to join in prayer with some of our Harvest families during the child dedication as they made the commitment to raise their children for the Lord.

Things kept happening even after "You are loved".  One small group gathered to pray for one of their members who was heading out on a mission adventure.

And some of our summer mission team to Timmins got to connect with Erich and Val, the small group leaders in Timmins.  Looking forward to hearing more about both of those trips in the near future.

Loved, loved, loved being with my Harvest family again on Sunday. Seemed to me that people were here early and in the room ready for worship. Lots of anticipation for what God is doing these days. Did I say that I just love being with my Harvest family?! ‘Cuz I do!

I was wandering down the Harvest Kids hall and saw the grade 4, 5 and 6 class taking part in a meal. Heard it was a Seder Dinner. Checked that out online and found out that the Seder is a meal on the first night or two of the Jewish Passover. Each aspect of the Seder and the Passover point to Jesus and the kids were hearing how everything relates to him being the Saviour. At the end of the Seder, the children were given the opportunity to nail a sin they are struggling with to the cross. This is a big deal for the children and I know they look forward to the Seder every year.

As for the service, worship was a little simpler (I think Jordan’s going to make sure it looks a lot bigger than that for Easter next Sunday!) with just four in the worship team. Those four delivered big time though. It was such a great time of worshipping the Lord and lifting high the name of Jesus!

The message was number six in the seven part Things Not Seen series. Pastor Todd took us through six whole chapters of Genesis! He walked (or maybe ran) us through the “Power of Faith” with the whole issue being that of forgiveness. Seems there are a ton of people struggling with issues of being able to forgive offenses committed against them. This message hit the spot for many. If you weren’t there, the video is up now, so check that out.

With Easter coming up fast, we have a lot going on at Harvest this week. On Thursday night the worship team will be working on things and the rest of us have been invited to come and pray for all God will do over the weekend. Good Friday services are at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and Easter Sunday at the same times. The e-invite is available to send to your friends and family and to Tweet and post on your Facebook page.

One of the great things we’ll see on Easter Sunday will be the baptisms of a bunch of people who have come to faith in Christ. On Sunday morning, as we were in worship, a woman professed her faith in Christ right in the baptism prep class! Now that’s cool! Praise God!

Can’t wait for the weekend!

I’m gaining!

I get a good picture of how much I’ve gained in the last year at tax time when I see how my RRSP’s are doing.  Why is it they never seem to get far enough to make me feel secure?  I realize that's just stuff I can see.  They aren’t really of faith.  But the things I can’t see – now those are of faith!  And I found out yesterday just how much I have gained in Christ.  You can see the message here.

I have seen how God is using me, and being glorified in me.  No credit to me but it sure is encouraging!  The challenge is facing the future and not knowing how things are going to work out.  Seeking God for wisdom and seeking his favour takes some trust.  I loved that quote from Oswald Chambers:

“Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the one who is leading.”

By faith I know God will use me!  Facing the question of whether I am ready for whatever he has for me is my test of faith, for sure.

Is it just me that feels like Joseph would make a good superhero?  He ends up running the country and saving the world!  Not sure I aspire to that but I do aspire to living for God in my here and now.  Joseph was good with dreams too.  Pharaoh dreamed about skinny cows.  The skinny cows I know about don’t eat up anything fat, they add to it!  That would be the wrong kind of gain.

Realizing the gain God does have for me, can be hindered by hanging onto the past and I have lots more past than many.  I think the Soul Care department will give us some more on dealing with forgetting when it comes to the past.   I am excited that faith brings fruitfulness.  Even here in this land of affliction, and we’re not talking about the weather!

I am so glad that God can heal the painful places and the unresolved pieces, and give me a whole new name, family and identity.  Just like Zaphenath-paneah.  Say that five times real fast!

How has God done that in you?

What a great Sunday, wow! Some great worship tunes off the top and then a powerful message from Pastor Todd. The 9 a.m. service was looking a bit low. I think people may have forgotten about the time change. Our 11:15 service was certainly a bit more populated then normal. Hopefully people remember by next Sunday at least...

Not sure if it was the time change or what, but the tech guys had their hands full with some crazy things that went down. Praise the Lord that we had a great morning despite it, and figured out the root of most of the issues! So cool to see the Lord show up in a big way, despite the craziness that can surround us at times.

Pastor Todd touched on the life of Joseph as we continued through our series "Things Not Seen". Joseph had a crazy life story that we had been talking through, and this week was just as unique.  Todd really emphasized that through every situation, Joseph was never walking alone. The Lord was always with him.

They closed the service off in a really cool way. Todd had people stand and get prayed over. People that found themselves needing faith for a circumstance that they were in the midst of. We had leaders and brothers and sisters in Christ stand along side them and pray over them. So great seeing the body of Christ love on one another like that. We then continued on to a time of extended spirit filled worship. Such a powerful time!

In case you missed it, you're in luck! We have posted the video so you can view it online. Don't let this be an excuse to miss next week.

You are loved!

White Flag Monday

Not many of us like to wave the white flag. People who are competitive like me really hate to lose. There are a lot of hockey games I wish had a fourth period.  I will never admit that the result could have been even worse!

It is amazing to me that I might be fighting against God in some things.  Trying to compete against God – how dumb is that!?  The reality was sure brought home by the situation Joseph found himself in.  He really is the poster boy for endurance and faithfulness – and not just because of his amazing good looks.

I never really thought about the things I face as tests.  Now I think I see them a little more clearly.  The whole area of sexual passions has always been a challenge.  I recently have put Covenant Eyes (www.covenanteyes.com) on all my Internet devices.  I have one friend who gave up his smart phone to try to get some victory in this area.  I think it is easy to get hung up on the externals and that is part of the answer, but there is a deeper reality.  Pastor Todd noted that, “There will be no lasting, ongoing, successful resistance of the temptation to sin sexually unless we change our passions.” (Listen to the whole message here.)

I am going to pay attention to the MAP Pastor Todd gave us:

  • Moral Fences
  • Accountable Relationships
  • Personal Disciplines

I am also looking forward to the blogs he promised with more help.  I’m so glad our church is so committed to grace and truth that we have staff tasked to help.  I hope anyone who needs to contacts them.  And yes, I do know their contact info:

rfreeman@harvestbarrie.ca
apapania@harvestbarrie.ca

While this sexual area is so huge, for so many, I certainly don’t want to miss the fact that some tests come in other areas of my life.  How much am I missing God’s blessing because of my own resistance and stubbornness?  I really do have to surrender every area to Jesus.  I planted my flag on one of them yesterday.  Will I wave it today?  Will you?

I was reminded again yesterday of the blessing it is for our church to be part of Harvest Bible Fellowship. We had the privilege of being impacted by Pastor Rick Donald of Harvest Chicago and his message from Psalm 1.  Pastor Rick shared a practical and challenging message. If you missed it, as always you can listen online.

Of course, the other cool thing about yesterday was that Pastor Rick is Jordan's dad and leading the service together was a great experience for them that we got to participate in.

Things were exciting in Harvest Kids yesterday too. It was a busy place between services with several volunteer meetings taking place as class coordinators met with their teams and together they were catching a fresh vision of how they can show Christ's love to Harvest Kids.  The Gotta Move day camp buzz has already started too.  Registrations are coming in so don't miss out!

Sunday evening, our Builders (ministry leaders and small group leaders) met to hear from our elders.  It was a good time together as Pastor Todd shared the elders' vision for Harvest Barrie.  Not everything was serious...but it was all very interesting!

See you next Sunday.

Well you've got to give it to Pastor Todd for bringing a really great word from a... let's say... interesting passage?  If you were there yesterday you know what I'm talking about, and if you missed it - check it out here.  It's pretty appalling to see the result of faithlessness as seen in the life of Judah in Genesis 38.  It's not pretty. That being said, God's still on the throne.  He can still work despite our mistakes and calls us to have our relationships, identity, comfort and ethics all stem from a relationship totally devoted to him.

We also had a brand new ministry start up today and you would have noticed that when you saw the video cameras set up - we're really excited about how this will help us advance the gospel further as we can now record our full services.  Pray for the team as they work out all the details going forward.

We did some child dedications too, so give it up for babies!  The cute outfits and posing for the congregation are great but what's even better is seeing husbands and wives committed to raising their kids to know and follow Jesus Christ.

Well, hope you're making the most of Family Day today. Harvest has some tobogganing happening down at Hillcrest School (184 Toronto Street) from 10-12 noon.  Bring the kids and friends to enjoy some sledding and treats on Harvest.

Have a great week.

Ojsdflkjoiuoijdsf...sorry, my fingers are still a bit numb from yesterday's services...

It was a little cold yesterday, has everyone thawed out yet?

Despite the temperature in the room, I think we can all agree it was a great service yet again!

The worship team helped us warm up while clapping along and singing to the Lord. They taught us a great new song that I heard on the radio the other day. "Whom Shall I Fear" was the name of the track by Chris Tomlin. Be sure to learn it, sounds like a keeper!

How great was it to have Pastor Todd back in the pulpit too? We were blessed to have Mike and Roger, but I for one was pumped to begin this new series, "Things Not Seen". This was a great launch into this series. If you missed it, you can listen online.

Let's be praying that the Lord really uses this in our lives and the life of our church.

I heard that Jordan has most of the video gear now so we can start putting video of our messages online! If you're interested in helping out with that ministry, be sure to shoot him an email, .

What a great service yesterday! Loved the boy band up there this weekend. Can I say that? No offense to the ladies on the team!

Really dig the folk style worship, we are so blessed to have such gifted musicians in our church body. The variety of style we get is great. People certainly got into it, lots of hand clapping this weekend, our church seems to be getter better at holding the rhythm!

For those of you in the 11:15 service, Jordan encouraged you to put on your "gospel pants" to sing the new song (All My Fountains). There was an obvious vibe in the room, people were clapping and swaying! Lets keep that up next week!

So great to have Pastor Mike preaching this weekend. Concluding a great series in the foundations of our church, Connect@Harvest. You can listen here.

We were challenged to worship, walk and work for Christ. So encouraged to hear the number of people involved already, love to see 100% though!

Check out the website for a place to get plugged in!

Also if you've enjoyed the series, remember it's available at the bookstore!

Until next week.

I didn’t get the memo, but apparently there is a Community of Purple that attends Harvest!  There are also a lot of people that belong to the seedy sports sub-culture called the Leafs Nation, as well as a lot of Scots that attend first service.  Not so much at second!

I’ve been thinking about all the various communities I belong to.  Communities based on place, people, (Jewish for me!), passions and participation.  The community that is most significant for me is the community of believers but I just had to wonder how that is impacting all the others.  I was pretty convicted about being different by just not complaining.  I really am thankful for most things, including my job but I have to admit I get caught up in the negativity sometimes.  It’s hard to rise above that isn’t it?  How do you do it?

Speaking of the negative, I saw that our elder chair, Terry Codling, took up the challenge to “tweet that!”  It reads “We don’t experience uncommon community, because of our own uncommon selfishness masquerading as righteousness.”  That was based on the five negatives that we often bring to church:

1.     My goals without regard for your goals.
2.     My viewpoint better than your viewpoint.
3.     Me not you!
4.     Me better than you!
5.     Me before you!  (Mine, mine, mine!)

What does it say that the prize went to a kid that wasn’t joining the cry?  I think Pastor Roger set us up, but I’m glad not to be the guy that got that prize!

I noticed some very interesting things happening down the Harvest Kids hall on Sunday!  Our grade four/five kids are getting into character as they continue to work through their study "The Footsteps of Jesus".

If you missed Sunday, you can listen to the message online. It was great to see that even in January Erich and Val Koroschetz made it down from Timmins. If you know someone in that area who might be interested in our Timmins small group, have them check out the info and get in touch with Erich and Val.

It was sweet to end with communion and the understanding that it isn’t just following Christ that makes us an uncommon community but the reality we are all in him.  “We share Christ!”  I do think we’ve got that going!  Here’s to more of that!

Peace,

Eutychus

What. A. Sunday. I think The Lord coming back is the only thing that could have made it better. There was such a sense of the Lord's presence in the room that seemed to hit us as we walked in. Personally I came into the service a little "off my game" if you will. But immediately I was gripped by a powerful sense of God's love and grace. Perhaps that had something to do with walking into a building where faithful prayer warriors had been coming and going all night lifting our church up during our 24 hours of prayer.

And how huge was the statement that Terry Codling read? Honestly, churches limp on for decades while relationships that went sideways remain a thorn in the side of the people. Reconciling with Glen is a massive thing to thank God for in the life of our church. Go Lord! (You can hear the statement below.)

Todd brought a great message on the four pillars and it's really good to reacquaint ourselves with what God has laid on our hearts as a church. If you didn't hear it, give it a listen here...and don't miss the kids who helped out by giving us the Harvest Kids version of the pillars.

Oh yeah - baptisms! We saw 12 people take the step of obedience and share testimonies of God's saving grace. It was a pretty incredible way to end the service.

We have Roger on deck to preach this coming  Sunday about uncommon community so pray for him as he preps. See you then.

Another great Sunday together! Passionate worship, a solid message from the Word and great news about what God is doing around here. LOVE IT!

It was great to have Chad Ballantyne leading worship for us again. The team sang a great new Paul Baloche song called, “Same Love”.  I found the official video on YouTube—pretty cool. I like it so much that I downloaded it from iTunes and added it to my playlist. You should too.

Just before he preached, Pastor Todd gave a report on our end of year giving in 2012 and a few other praiseworthy notes. I’ve heard that the full report in print and audio will be posted in this blog tomorrow. The First Things campaign brought in a little more than $84,000 toward retiring the mortgage on the office facility. That’s something to be thankful for!

As part of that same report we heard that we’re starting a video ministry. The elders had identified this as a vision initiative for 2013 and budgeted $20,000 to buy the equipment we need and get it going. Near the end of the year, a donor from outside our church family who heard about it stepped up and wrote a cheque for the entire amount! Now that’s cool!  If you want to be involved in this ministry, . He’s building a team.  Watch for video podcasts soon!

While we were meeting for worship, our senior high youth and their leaders were up in Muskoka for their Winterfüse retreat.  From what I hear, some young people are coming back changed. Word is that something pretty powerful happened up in Muskoka this weekend. Pray for our youth as they work at keeping commitments made while back at their high schools this week.

Pastor Todd’s sermon was the second in this Connect@Harvest series that is all about us—what makes Harvest Bible Chapel distinctive. He had us looking at Matthew 28:19-20 to hear all about our mission. I love what he said near the end, “The specific mission serves the greater mission. The specific mission is to make disciples; the greater mission is “to him be glory in the church”. Let’s get on that.  If you missed it, you can listen to it here.

At the end of the service we were told that next Sunday is one of those “do not miss” ones. The elders are making an announcement, he said, that will be a blessing to our church. Can’t wait for that!

And next Sunday is also a baptism service. We heard in the sermon a strong point that being baptized is a big part of what it means to be “making disciples”. If you haven’t been baptized as the Bible teaches, that you want to make that right this Sunday.

And it is our week of prayer! I’ll be at TCS on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for the Worship & Prayer Night. Hope to see you.  And don’t forget to sign up for the 24 Hours of Prayer starting Saturday at 1 p.m. We believe firmly in the power of prayer! Let’s show that we believe that.

Talk to you next Monday!

Eutychus

Was it the first Sunday of the New Year yesterday? I couldn't tell by all of Jordan's "hilarious" jokes...

On a lighter note, I haven't written a blog since last year! (Cue the drummer) Sorry, I figured it's the only time I can do it...

Yesterday was a great start to the new year though, gathering together with our church family lifting high the name of Jesus together.

Pastor Todd had a great message loaded up for us, our foundation: Jesus Christ. (You can listen here.) Such a great message to begin with this year, something that a lot of us set as a goal at the beginning of every year and really struggle with as the year goes on. Putting Jesus Christ first as our foundation is easier said then done, but with his help we can make this the year of growing in him, and hearing more of who he is in the Scriptures just makes me want to draw nearer!

I love having an extended time of worship at the end of the message, responding to what we have just heard and what the Lord just revealed to us through his Word. Yesterday, during that worship time, we had a chance in our services to hear from our congregation as many testified of exactly how they saw Jesus Christ as their foundation in 2012.

I love the transparency and realness that comes with these open mic times. Hearing the various stories and situations that people have walked through this last year, clinging to the Lord and learning more and more about the love that he has for them despite their situations.

So excited for the rest of this Connect@Harvest series!

Hope to see you out next weekend!

Happy New Year!  Almost... It's kind of funny because I had a lot of conversations with people this Sunday where we weren't really sure if it was too early to wish each other a Happy New Year or not...  Either way, it was another great Sunday.  It was nice to be able to give Pastor Todd a Sunday off and hear from Mike and his hacking cough.  He had us in Isaiah 43:1-7 in a message called "I will not fear."  (You can listen to it here.) There's no doubt that we all struggle with various fears that hold us back.  But are we stepping out in faith and trusting God with those?  Do we have a good handle on what our fears even are?  We should all take some time this week and think that through.

Joel Dugard is home for the holidays and it was great having him lead us in worship.  If you want to hear that new song we introduced, you can find "I Desire Jesus" in iTunes.

Oh yes, one more thing - today is literally the last day to give to our year end campaign!  If you haven't yet given and still want to, the office is open from 8:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.  Come in and say hi!

See you this weekend.

Nice start on Sunday with Pastor Todd taking the stage to do the call to worship. The place got pretty fired up after that little intro. Of course, it's not like we need it these days. Worship has been on fire for a few months now. But it was cool for sure!

All of that worship helped us get to a good place before hearing a serious message from the Word. True to his word from last week when this series started, Pastor Todd used the same outline and preached the same passage as last week. We’ll all have it locked down by the time this Christmas series wraps up.

The difference in the messages though was reflected in that he moved us on to the second name for the child in Isaiah 9:6. Jesus is Mighty God. It was a timely message in light of the terrible news out of Newtown, Connecticut. I won't try to re-preach the sermon here. You can listen to it yourself if you missed it. For a message on our powerlessness, the power of the Mighty God was pretty evident in the room.

The service also featured some child dedications. We like that kind of thing around Christmas. The DeBoer, Clark, and Plavic families brought their little ones to be dedicated before the Lord and his church. Pastor Mike, as is our custom, handed the families a certificate and a letter that the little one is expected to open on their twelfth birthday. All three kids were as good as gold for Pastor Mike. He’s such a  pro!

After the service, I took a little stroll down the Harvest Kids hall and noticed that Jeannie is still appreciating her team. Her coffee and treat station has been operating for the last several weeks to lay a “sweet thank you” (as she would say) on those who serve so well each month in HK. We all appreciate that!

I also noticed that Miss Sarah McFarlane was in rehearsal with the kids’ choir. Next Sunday morning they will be KICKING OFF the service with a great song. I need to make sure I’m in the worship centre early so I don’t miss a single note!

And as for next Sunday, it’s a BIG one! Our regularly scheduled services in the morning and then we have our Christmas Eve Worship Event, Everything Changed, that evening and also on the 24th. Both of those events start at 7 p.m.  Be sure to invite your friends and family to come out and celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace.

I’ve got some Christmas shopping left to do. Planning on posting again to the blog next Monday, December 24th. No rest for Eutychus this Christmas!

Be blessed!

I think the best thing about church this Sunday is that it was only December 9 and yet we fully launched into our Christmas theme and series that will culminate with two amazing worship services on the 23rd and 24th. Why is this so good? Well, because it gives our hearts the time and opportunity to really absorb the amazing news that a Saviour came. I don't know about you but I can easily get bogged down in all the "things about Christmas" that aren't really about Christmas at all. This past Sunday allowed me to cut through all that and now that it's Monday, it's not like it's over - we still have 15 days to focus in on Christ's birth. Love that.  (If you missed Sunday, listen here.)

Todd had us in Isaiah 9:1-7 and challenged us with this: "The Saviour came and everything changed. Has it for you?" Have you really found your happiness and joy through Jesus Christ in a life altering way - or are you still looking for all that somewhere else? Wrestle with that today and this week, and come back next Sunday for more from this great passage because we're just getting started.

By the way, we're still chipping away at our debt so be sure to pray and think about how you can contribute to our year end financial campaign - you still have a few weeks left to help out (or put another way: a few more weeks to procrastinate).

And how did you like the video Christmas greeting from the worship team? Glad I was in the worship centre a few minutes before the service started.  Here's the video.

There's lots more ahead this December at Harvest. Be sure to check out the website if you need details for anything. Have a great week and see you soon.

Whoa! That's how it ended.

But before that it was loud, rockin', boisterous and interactive. But there was also silence.  Maybe like in heaven. That's what we are going for!

This series has got me thinking about how I put an "AMEN!" to worship with every aspect of my life. I get that it isn't about style or volume but passion, authenticity, expressing my heart to God and responding to him in holiness. I really believe we are getting that! If you missed any part of this series, you can download it from iTunes or from our website.

That's one reason I'm getting my invitations out for our Christmas Worship Event. I want my friends to "come and see!"  I don't want any of those invitations to just go into the recycling bin!

Hey! Did I overhear that it was Clement (one of our elders) and Janet Bamikole's 23rd wedding anniversary? So cool!  So many years (especially to someone who hasn't even started yet)!

I saw Cheryl talking to Pastor Todd as they were driving away from church yesterday but that Nissan was vibrating! Not sure he was hearing her!

Peace!

Pastor Todd was looking stylish in that new eyewear. Glad we didn't have any "reading malfunctions" this week.

Another great message in our series, "After This". Not sure about you, but I'm just longing for eternity where there with be no more weeping or pain. If you missed it, you can listen here

So cool to see people responding to the message and coming up front and being prayed over. It's so cool to me to see people on their knees, tears in their eyes, crying out to God together. We have SO MUCH to look forward to together church.

Having the worship at the back half of the service has been really amazing too, responding to God's Word like this has been unreal. People are singing so loud!

I couldn't even hear myself sing this weekend...which might be a good thing...

I heard the 11:15 service may have sung a bit louder then the 9 a.m. too...maybe next week they can step it up ; )

It could have just been because their ears were still ringing from the false alarm fire alarm that greeted them as they arrived.

Not every Sunday do we see fire-fighters all geared up!

Don't forget about our First Things Campaign. Pray about how you would like to contribute. I'm going to be praying about that this week for sure and I'd urge you to do the same.

Also heard about our Christmas Eve services - Everything Changed. Invitations are available. Get you friends to "come and see."

Looking forward to next Sunday together already.

A powerful Sunday together! Pastor Todd said he might offend some and I’m thinking that he might have been right. Seems the two things people get most weirded-out by is money and worship and he’s hit both topics this fall. Crazy for punishment, I guess.

If you were in the 9 a.m. service, you know that Pastor Todd had a visual meltdown and couldn’t read his notes at one point. Then he confessed his pride and that he actually has new glasses at home that he probably should have had on his face. He regrouped pretty quickly and resumed the message. I have two words for you Pastor Todd, “bigger font”.

As for the sermon itself, like I said, powerful…and practical. We were challenged hard about all the ways we can worship, but maybe don’t because of our own pride. I know that’s what hit me. There was a ton to think about after this message. If you weren’t able to be in the room, give it a listen online.

It was so cool to have Joel Dugard leading us again in worship. He’s home from Liberty U for U.S. Thanksgiving.  The band led us through two great sets: one to open the morning and then an extended closing set that included the reading of Scripture and lifted us to the throne room of God after the sermon. Seemed pretty clear that God was meeting with us in that moment.

By the way, I heard via Twitter that Jordan lit it up at Harvest York Region on Sunday morning. I heard the worship there was LOUD! Grateful for Pastor Paul and the team there and for all God is doing in that church.

If you walked through the lobby, you probably saw that our young adults are manning a booth for the “If they were mine” drive to provide Christmas baskets for children in the orphan ministries we partner with in Nigeria and Haiti. The $40 you donate will be sent directly to the ministry to purchase gifts for the children. Instead of filling a box here and shipping it, the money is spent in country, further helping the children by stimulating their economy, not ours. Stop by the lobby next Sunday, November 25 to buy your basket. You can pay with cheque, cash, credit card or debit.

Pastor Mike mentioned the First Things Campaign during his announcements. How cool will it be to retire the small debt we have on our Bayfield property?! I’m thinking through what I need to do to make it happen, and I’m also thinking that $150,000 by year end isn’t that tough for a church like ours that is so passionate about the Lord and this ministry he’s given to us. In the words of some cheesy actor in some cheesy movie, “Let’s do this people.” With God’s help and for his glory!

I’m already super eager for next Sunday and more of this worship series. And I’m guessing that the “turn off the ringer on your cellphone” announcement will be back. Dang, we were doing so well!

Talk to you next Monday.

Whoa!  I mean, Whoa!!!

I really can’t say what pulled that out of my soul and through my lips the most!

Was it the sound and light display Saturday night that just seemed to be made for preparing us for the message?  Was it that we imported a storm into the worship center when it was so nice outside?  Was it that I was left shaken through the last song?  Who can stand?

I fully expected to open my eyes to see everyone on our faces.  Don’t take that as a criticism that we weren’t, (I was still standing also), but I think I caught what might have been a bit of a glimpse of something that might have been something from outside of time!

Whoa!

I can’t wait for the message next week.  If the first refrain was that powerful, what will the next one be like? If you missed yesterday's message you can listen online.

I was pretty blessed to see how many people signed up to hand out Timmies cards to bless our veterans and service personnel.  I heard from one person that they were well received.  Thanks to those who served us this way, to bless those who served us so well, and those who continue to do so! Jim is a veteran and Monique serves us now.  Glad they are part of our body with many others.

I‘m pretty pumped about our global partnerships.  So cool we had Canadians helping launch a Harvest Bible Chapel in Nicaragua!  Also, I’m buying a basket to bless the kids in the orphanages.  I really like that my dollars will bless the local economy there, give our partners influence and impact, and meet the exact needs of the children.  Now that’s a Christmas present!

I think a great Christmas present to oneself is to be and stay debt-free.  I am considering carefully how I can help our church to get there with my gifts to the year-end campaign.  I hope you are too!  (I learned just recently that giving is another part of our overall worship.)

Last night was also an amazing gathering of our Harvest family for worship and prayer. Honestly, if you haven't come to one, you do not know what you're missing.

I’m still not sure how I feel about thunderstorms but I better get used to it because apparently there is a lot of that going on in heaven.  I downloaded a sound bite I can play full volume to practice!  Boooom!!!

Whoa,

Eutychus

Well if you missed this Sunday you missed a lot. We had Dawn and Brandt leading worship, which was great, and Todd brought the plane down for a landing in our Making Change series.

It was all about generosity and really nailed the idea that we need to be cheerful givers. Personally I was rocked by the thought that I need to intentionally think through what I give. As someone who gives online and it comes out of my account automatically, I need to take some time this week to work through whether or not my giving is really stretching me. In other words, is my giving really an act of faith or do I only give the "token 10%" when I should be/could be giving more? I was challenged AND encouraged to trust God with more.  If you missed it, listen to the message online.

Todd also talked about the law of sowing and reaping: what you sow or plant, that's what you reap or get back.  If you plant in greater quantity you get back in greater quantity.  Check out 2 Corinthians 9:6, Proverbs 11:24-25 and Luke 6:38.  "Though it seems so clear that generosity in offerings is the best way to receive an abundant blessing from God, so many still forfeit that blessing. They don’t sow and so they don’t reap."

Then Todd walked us through a little family chat. Next Sunday is Remembrance Day and if you'd like to be a part of the team that's going to go out part way through first service to hand out Timmy's cards with a thank you from our church to our veterans, be sure to and get signed up.

We also have a Financial Peace University class starting on November 22 so if this series has been stirring you up to getting on top of your finances, and join the class.

We're also doing a year end financial campaign. The idea is for everyone - even you - to be involved in raising $150,000 to completely take care of the mortgage on our office building at 258 Bayfield.  We could wipe it out if everyone gave $600 (not including regular givings). The elders recognize that not everyone could make this happen while others could make it happen in their sleep. We have nine Sundays till the end of the year and we're trusting God to do amazing things through this!

So be in prayer..which reminds me - Worship and Prayer night next week, November 11 at 6:30 p.m. Much is happening and we praise God for his hand in it! See you next week.

Church church church.

Yesterday at church rocked! Jordan was right, people at our church love to worship and it's so evident! I am so blessed by such an amazing church family. Everyone that I high-fived (in the 11:15 service) was someone I loved and am thankful for.

Our worship time was fantastic - so great to have the visual of the cross up there, to really remember and focus on what the Lord did for us, and why we should have such an attitude of gratitude. (Nice ring to that, eh?) The song Jordan and Amber sang before the message, really got our hearts into that place. And Amber really stepped up and sounded amazing yesterday too. Wow, blessed by the talented people on the worship team week after week.

Pastor Todd challenged us by saying, "For a believer, gratitude must be rightly directed and passionately expressed." We need to be grateful for ALL. We were challenged to make a list. How many of you have started that?

I've got my family and church family at the top of my list so only 9,998 more reasons to go! Let's really begin to put those things on paper this week.

If you missed yesterday, listen to the message online.  Looking forward to spending time with you all next week! Come prepared to worship your faces off!

Hey!  Apparently if you join the worship team it comes with a fiancée!  Or, maybe you already need one to join.  Or maybe it’s just a real good reason to sing in the first place!  Really, I’m glad for Sarah and Deanna and sure appreciate their leading us into worship, which by the way, was rocking again.

Jordan announced a special element during worship and I was jumping up for a spontaneous choir but he's always changing things up and he had people come up to the mic and read Scripture giving praise to God.  It was pretty powerful.  Lots of Psalms!  One lady had hers highlighted in yellow, memorized, and said she was seeing God bring it out in her life.  That would be the point, for sure!

Pastor Todd was preaching on money and it was kind of funny when he gave people a chance to leave if they didn't want to hear that message and some guys pretended to stand up.  I noticed lots of nervous laughter but as far as I could see, everyone stayed.

Todd's message made me ask this question, “Does money have my heart?”  Todd’s examples made it pretty clear that when it comes to money I better not try to put God off, or buy him off. I am going to look over my bank statements and budget to see if shiny stuff is too important.  I’ll be asking:

Am I prioritizing the eternal?

Am I paying my debts?

Am I putting aside for the future?

Am I pressing into my heart issues?

I guess the bottom line is, “Do my financial decisions please God?”

Pastor Todd thought he was safe in the sermon paraphrasing "donkey and oxen" to "car" in reference to the tenth commandment, "you shall not covet..." He thought, as many of us would, that no one owns a donkey anymore, but with Barrie being so close to farm country, he was wrong. This is "Glory" the donkey who resides at Rounds Ranch with Ken and Geri Rounds. Ken sent in these photos of his beautiful beast, but cautioned everyone about coveting his donkey.

I heard lots of parents are looking forward to the parenting course.  It will be good to see the results of that in Harvest Kids and Youth!  Just kidding, of course.  I like the kids I work with.  Their faith often challenges me.  We want to keep that going!

I also slipped into the Builders' meeting last night and sampled the food and listened in on the conversation.  The pumpkin donuts, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin pie and apple cider were delicious! Love the fall flavours! Great updates and reports too from our pastors, directors and treasurer. So cool what God is doing in our church. And it was great to meet Erich and Val from Timmins. It'll be great to see Harvest there in the future.

Since we're in this money series, I'd like to share just a brief part of my own testimony. I’m grateful for those who have taught me about money and I'm following some good examples in my giving.  That includes giving more than 10% to our church and increasing that amount regularly.  Besides that, I'm able to give gifts to other works of God.  By God's grace I'm living debt-free and seeking to have something put aside to be generous in meeting needs.  I didn’t get here right away or easily, but I am experiencing contentment. If you missed Sunday's message, you can listen here. And be sure to be at Harvest for the next two Sundays. If you know you need to make some changes and want some practical help, to sign up for Financial Peace University.

Peace,

Eutychus

Wow.

That word sums up everything that went down at Harvest this Sunday.  There was a real sense of the joy of the Lord in the house, outstanding worship (a mandolin!), a cool spoken word video by Propaganda (see it below) and a 10 point message that landed on time (yes, 10 points!)!

Beyond that, Pastor Todd's message on the abundant life we receive in Christ from Romans 8 was such a perfect way to wrap up our GO5PEL series. Yes, we give up our lives to Christ when we get saved but we get way more back than we could imagine. If you haven't heard what the Lord had to say to us through his Word yet, you need to give it a listen or pick up the CD set which will be available next week at the bookstore. God will use this in your life and through you into the lives of others

Terry Codling, our elder chair, reported on his and Pastor Todd's recent trip to Glasgow and Romania.  It was great to see photos and hear about what God is doing in Harvest churches in those countries.

Don't forget that we have a parenting class starting up on Tuesday, Oct 23 for eight weeks. Pastor Mike seemed pretty excited about it during the announcements. Sign up with or call the church office to register.

Have a great week!

The Thanksgiving Day holiday delayed my usual musings about Sunday. I’m still a little sore from battling it out on the gridiron yesterday. What a game! The Old Dudes beat the Young Guns once again! (Lots of photos on Harvest's Facebook page.) Talk now of a Snow Bowl in February…and no flags. Full tackle this time. Funny, seemed to me at times that Monday’s game was full tackle.

Sunday was a day of celebration for sure! Pastor Todd continued the GO5PEL series with message four on the word “Believe”. If you have been tracking with the series and missed this message, check it out online. The series wraps up next Sunday.

I heard that Pastor Mike was able to speak with a man who has occasionally attended Harvest who said he should have stood up in first service, but didn’t. He prayed to become a Christ-follower between services on Sunday! Praise God for that.

It is always cool to hear the stories of those who are being baptized.  Four did just that on Sunday (two in each service) including Dan, who made his decision for Christ in the past few weeks. As an aside, he’s also a solid football player.

Like you, I heard the announcement on Sunday about Angelo Papania joining the Harvest staff team as Biblical Soul Care Assistant. Pastor Roger said this hiring was as a result of a generous donation and will further support our efforts to integrate Biblical Soul Care into the life of our church.

I’ve still got a bit of a turkey-hangover. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend too!

A great weekend at Harvest Barrie. Not just a Sunday, but the whole weekend seemed fantastic.

Not sure if it was mentioned at church, but the women's event Saturday was off the chain. They made a lip sync video that was amazing - the men have got a lot to live up to. Check out the video here.

Sunday was a great day as well. Don't you wish everyday could be Sunday?

How sweet was that rendition of Amazing Grace? Certainly has come a long way from the hymn I remember. Really enjoy those hymn Sundays. The team did a great job leading us to the throne room for sure.

Pastor Mike brought it today as well (listen here). What Jesus Christ did for us on the cross is something I still can't fathom. I'm just so grateful for the sacrifice. We were far away due to our sin and he took our place. Amazing Grace, what better way to close the service, eh?

Pastor Todd and Terry are trying to come home today.  Follow their version of The Amazing Race on Facebook or Twitter. Let's make sure to lift them up in prayer as they travel back!

Don't forget that if you feel called to be baptized, next week can be your week. and they'll get you plugged in!

I don’t want to hear bad news!  I don’t want to hear it!

But if there is a problem, it can’t be dealt with until I recognize it.  I have had this experience.  I’ve had to face the bad news with my health, with my car, and with my dating relationships.  All those pale in significance compared to what I need to hear about my sin.

Mike brought a hard word but it was pretty clear that a lot of people received it. (You can listen here.)  I think I’ve probably left this part of the gospel out of some conversations I’ve had.  I realize I didn’t do my friends any favours with that, because what I gave them wasn’t the gospel and wasn’t what they needed.  That is sure going to change!  And I’m sure looking forward to next week’s good news.

This Sunday was child dedications too.  Three families brought their children to stand before their church family, committing to raising their children to follow Jesus.

While we were just starting to worship here, Pastor Todd and Terry Codling were already finished worship in Scotland.  They were there to lay hands on some men to install them as elders over Harvest Bible Chapel Glasgow.  Our elders were bearing that responsibility until now.  It is so exciting for us to share in this fellowship!  They are visiting with Hilary Shewfelt also.  It’s so cool that we are even sharing our people!

They are off to Romania next so keep praying for them.  And pray for each other.  Everything is getting into full swing.  I am looking forward to small group this week and serving here at Harvest.  We sure could use some help with setting up on Sunday mornings.  Last week there were only two guys setting up chairs.

After that message I ended up reading all the way through Romans again.  Wow!  God has laid it all out for us so clearly.  I need to get someone out to this series this Sunday.  Who will you ask?

Peace,

Eutychus

This might just be the most important series ever done at Harvest Barrie in 11 years.  Our GO5PEL series was officially launched yesterday with Pastor Todd taking us through the first word: GOD.  Personally I was shaken by the idea that God is real and everyone knows it.  Those who deny that reality are simply suppressing the truth a la Romans 1:18.  If you missed it, it's online.

A cool thing that happened to bring that truth home. People came up at the end of the message and wrote unsaved loved ones names down in a book, so that we could pray in faith that they would see with new eyes that God is very much real, and loves them completely.  Those books will be available all throughout this series (and beyond if need be) for you to continue to write down names and pray.  And when someone on the list becomes a Christ follower, we ask that you would draw a cross beside the name.

Next week is the second word in the series: SIN.  It's so crucial that we understand the "bad news" of the gospel before we can ever get to the good news part.  Come ready and eager for God to move in power and glory.  Pray for salvation in the Lord's house.

Also, be praying for Pastor Todd and Terry Codling as they head to Scotland and Romania for 10 days or so.  Pray that they would be used powerfully in both places.

Have a great week.

What a start! What a year ahead!

Launch Sunday lived up to its billing. WOW! What a way to get started on a new ministry year. It was a GLORY-TO-GOD morning in every way!

First, there were some visual changes from the Harvest Kids hallway to the main stage.

As soon as I arrived I noticed the bright colours bursting out from the Harvest Kids (note the new name) hall. The four pillars have been re-written in kid-friendly speak and the registration desk area is like a box of Starburst candies. I think Jeannie likes spectacular colours. Just guessing.

In the worship centre, the stage looked fantastic with the new screen and projector as well as the banners hanging on each side with our theme for the year.  There was even some funky staging using light bulbs and wooden pallets. Very cool and creative.

But what really stood out for me was the non-visual atmosphere…the feeling in the place…the sense of what God is up to. And all in all, I’d say a pretty strong sense of, “God is in the house!” in the preaching and in the worship. It was there too in the numbers of people who were guests to Harvest and looking for a church home.

As I said already, our theme is boldly proclaimed on the two banners at the front of the worship centre… “First Things” from Matthew 6:33 in which Jesus says to us, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you.” We were pressed with the question that will dog us all year long now, “Will you make God’s priorities for you, your priorities for you?”

With that question stuck in my brain, I’m jazzed about the preaching series we’re going to be working on this year as we all work on our priorities. Pastor Todd shared a synopsis of each series and I can’t wait to hear what God has for us through his teaching week by week. A complete list of those series will be posted on the preaching page of the website.

If you happened to be someone who missed Sunday, be sure to give the sermon a listen online. Pastor Todd preached Matthew 6:33, he shared about the seven preaching series, and he gave us all a pastoral pep talk about how to make the most of this year as part of the church family.

Before I shut this down and let you get back to your day, someone shared Isaiah 43:19a with me just this morning as I was sitting down to write the blog. In that verse, God was telling the prophet, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” As I read that, I really have a sense that God is doing that for us too. There is a strong sense of anticipation and joy at the Lord’s work among us.

And, as Pastor Roger said during the announcements, “God’s just getting started.” It is going to be a great year at Harvest Barrie as we pursue the First Things of his kingdom!

Great to have Pastor Todd back in the pulpit yesterday! Really looking forward to another new ministry year. The Lord is going to use this one big time, I just know it.

For those of you that missed church yesterday, you may need some explaining. Worship for starters was quite different, great, but different. The worship team set up on the floor so it was more intimate, and Tyler seemed to be playing some sort of box, but it sounded great.

We learned Matt Redman's "10,000 Reasons". Check it out if you haven't heard it! For those of us that were in the 11:15 service, I think we got a little treat...

Having longer to sleep in, we tend to still be a bit tired, so Jordan realized this and instead of starting right away told a story of "high fiving someone from the church through their cars while driving". After everybody had a good laugh, he had us sit down and restart and the energy was up at least 10 notches (on a five notch scale, mind you).

The sermon was a bit different this week as well, Todd preached through Galatians 2:20 and constantly related
to the hymn "When I Survey". The worship team came up and led us through that intermittently and it was a great lead in to celebrate the Lord's Table.

We saw some old wanted posters with some creepy dudes on them:

During the sermon, we heard that God wants us Dead AND Alive, dead to flesh and alive in his spirit. We also were called out to think about what our Harley Davidsons are in our lives, things that we lust after or desire more than the spirit. If this is still a bit unclear, just listen to the message. The motorcycle example was enough for me and I'm doing my best this holiday weekend to act like a dead corpse when one passes...

So looking forward to next week back with the Harvest family! Make sure to invite some friends out as we start our new ministry year!

Sometimes I'm blown away at my lack of faith.  I wonder if God's going to meet me where I'm at when I come to church on a Sunday morning.  I tend to foolishly think that God will work but it will be in someone else and not me.  One of the most mind blowing things about God is that he has this tendency to show up and work in the lives of all believers no matter where we find ourselves in life.  That happened again today at Harvest Barrie.  The chairman of our elders, Terry Codling brought us a strong word from Jude 17-25 about standing strong in the love of God.  God loves us - hopefully that's clear - but we still have a responsibility to put ourselves in a good place in order to be strong in that love.  If you haven't heard the message, or need to hear it again, check it out online here.

It was also amazing to have Eric Helliwell with us from Harvest Muskoka.  He brought it with passion and urgency and if you're interested in hearing more about what's up with Eric and HBC Muskoka, give him a follow on Twitter at @erichelliwell (Terry Codling is @TGCodling).

One more thing - don't forget about the Vertical Church Tour that's making a stop in Hamilton on Tuesday, September 18.  Contact the (705-739-8613) to reserve a seat on the bus as we're heading down to be a part of it all.

Have a great week!

I was already so excited about the Vertical Church tour on September 18.  Now that I have this book, I’m more than excited!  I have already read the blurb about Barrie on page 297 and the “Read this first” starting on page 27.  Yes, I read all the little “things people are saying about Vertical Church”!  There are even resources to access on the web.  (I’ve seen some of them already but they are sooo good I’ll watch them again.)  Spoiler alert: there is a soul-piercing tool on page 90!

You can tell I spent some time yesterday afternoon not getting a nap or anything much else done!  So thankful to the elders for making this book available to us all.  I think it will really encourage us.

I also spent some time thinking about the kind of man of faith Jonathan was and what a guy like that would be like now.  I decided he is like a lot of people I know.  They aren’t all leading nations but it's always surprising where you find them.  And Pastor Roger is right, there is something that is different that attracts us.  I’m going to write out all the times I can remember that happening and I’m going to make a list of people my heart is “knit together” with because of Christ.  I think a hint is that my first thought when I think of them is great thankfulness that I know them! If you missed yesterday, you can listen to the message online.

Summer is fast coming to a close.  I am looking forward to a social event with my small group and then kicking off the new ministry year with prayer on September 4.  Then launch Sunday!  That’s when everyone will find out the theme.  I’m trying to talk Pastor Todd into giving hints on Twitter.  Send in a comment if you want to help put on some pressure!

Peace,

Eutychus

I don’t know if they will ever let Jordan do announcements again!  How many CDs did he actually give away?  It’s a good thing Pastor Todd was away and doesn’t know they are being charged to his account.  I saw lots of people leaving with them.  Since I didn't get a free CD, I’m downloading the album from iTunes!  And I can't wait to find out what next week's surprise give away is.  Worship was so powerful!  I really sensed the presence of the Lord again.  These songs really are vertical.

Speaking of vertical, I’m signed up for the bus and I hope you are too.  September 18 is going to be a great night.  The reports coming in from the tour are pretty exciting.  There are even pictures on Twitter and Facebook!  You can connect with everything happening with the tour at www.jamesmacdonald.com

It’s not a surprise that Pastor Roger will be back.  He gets pretty excited when he’s bringing the Word! If you missed it, you can listen to the message online.  “Nothing can hinder the Lord!”  I think that will be echoing in my head for a while.  I’m working on my list too.  Here are the passages he said we could use but I think there are lots more to obey than just these!  Starting on one of them will be plenty for me to work on, I’m sure.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

Romans 12:9-21

Ephesians 4:25-32

2 Peter 1:3-11

One thing I love about Harvest is how God is working and changing people’s lives.  Pastor Roger mentioned a lady experiencing God’s peace and I heard about another person that professed salvation recently.  Yet another was sharing exactly what he mentioned about dealing with heart issues.  I know there are lots of struggles and some of my small group members have big challenges.  I think I better look into the Biblical Soul Care training

With all that is going on we better be praying.  I saw the team around the building this Sunday, praying for me – and you too.  I am so thankful for their prayers.  I think God is answering.

Peace,

Eutychus

So great to worship with our Harvest Barrie family. Jordan pointed out that the presence of the Lord was felt in our church yesterday. The love of Christ is so evident in our body that it's encouraging. Week after week I'm more and more fired up!

While Pastor Todd was preaching at Harvest Philadelphia, Pastor Mike continued his series in 1 John with a "Sin Checkup". You can listen online here. I was super convicted as I tend to just ignore the "little" sins so often, or I just consider myself 99.44% clean like the Dove soap...
Jesus Christ is the only pure and holy one though, and we need him to wash us clean!
So great to see people responding to what the Lord had for them that day and so encouraged to see people kneeling and praying at the front. The song that Jordan and the band closed with was so fitting too, a song of surrender! Raising our white flag to the King. It's him that makes us white as snow. If you wanted to check that song out, find it here on iTunes!

It's always amazing to me how the Lord continues to show up and work in us every single Sunday.  This week we were blessed to have Travis leading us in worship for the last time till he goes back to Liberty *sniff* and if you don't already have it, here's the link to pick up his song "God of the Ages" on iTunes.

Mike worked us through 1 John 1:1-4 which deals with the idea that all believers should be absolutely certain of their salvation.  We can be completely sure that God has saved us when we grow up into spiritual maturity and see the fruit of God's work in our lives.  So do you know Christ as your Saviour?  Are you growing and finding your joy in him?  Mike shared a quote from Martyn Lloyd-Jones which described the joy true believers experience:

“Joy is something very deep and profound, something that affects the whole and entire personality.  In other words, it comes to this; there is only one thing that can give true joy and that is contemplation of the Lord Jesus Christ.  He satisfies my mind; he satisfies my emotions; he satisfies my every desire.  He and his great salvation include the whole personality and nothing less, and in him I am complete.  Joy, in other words, is the response and the reaction of the soul to a knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Be sure to pray as our summer day camp is underway with tons of kids from the community attending and many of our youth and adults serving.  Pray for salvation and much fruit!

Have a great week,

Eutychus

I have to “confess” that Pastor Scott did not disappoint! I love the accent and love that he likes ours. More than that, I loved the message. I don’t know about you but I haven’t taken much of my leisure time this summer to contemplate. I plan to do it now and I have some great questions to ask myself. You can review the message here and see the small group questions here

Pretty cool to have Jordan’s best man here leading worship with him. Makes sense to pick a guy that big to protect you! Thanks Gooby! Really cool that Jordan shouted down the devil during first service too! He was out-singing a wayward amplifier.

I noticed a lot of visitors this week. Summer must be in full swing. Pastor Todd said he met someone from Texas and from other Harvests. (Besides Glasgow!) I love that our folks greet people they don’t know. I am trying to do that and have met people that are going to make us their home. They might end up in my small group!

Just saying, by the way, last night was off the charts! Worship was great and hearing from our team was so good. I appreciated the comments from Pastor Scott and Jeannie to the parents of our team. They really did do us proud! The true effect of the trip was in the building of faith in them and in us so the results are still coming in. And now Pastor Scott has me thinking – when will Mission-2 happen?

I wish I could bottle Jeannie’s energy. She is also excited about Day Camp and so are a lot of helpers! It’s happening July 30 – August 3. Check out the video here!

Peace,

Eutychus

The dog days of summer are here!  We are deep into July with hot and dry weather (in spite of the thunderstorm during second service!) It makes my dog want to hide in the shade and makes him a little snarly. Sometimes I’m just like him too!

But I sure got the message that I need to be different from everyone around me if I’m going to stand out and shout out for Jesus Christ. That means whether it’s the weather or some other trial, I should look different. I so appreciated Ian Hales’ passion for us believers to be salt and light.

I liked this quote: “Jesus emphasizes that our ability to preserve the world so that they may see Christ in us and prevent decay depends on us being different!” I’m so thankful for a clear philosophy of ministry here at Harvest that emphasizes not compromising who we are in Christ. I’m reviewing our purpose and pillars from the back of the bulletin!

It was cool to meet Ian and Sarah and their children Karis and Joshua. I am so thankful for the Pastors God has brought to the various churches in Harvest Bible Fellowship. I was glad to hear we were sharing Pastor Todd with Harvest Niagara too.

Tomorrow the team gets home from Glasgow. It will be exciting to hear them share next Sunday night. I’m looking forward to Pastor Scott preaching too! I’m going to practice my brogue with a couple of people around Harvest. Hope they don’t mind a phone call out of nowhere!

Oops! I hear a guitar riff. Must be time to pray!

Peace.

To Him Be The Glory.

We've not only heard that a lot this year, but we've had the privilege of seeing and experiencing his manifest glory time and time again.

A sad but great ending to our series and an awesome time of reading verses in Hebrews that really spoke to us throughout the year. The whole worship package was just great. I couldn't believe it was Sarah's first time up there - she seemed like a natural. The Lord has certainly gifted her and we are blessed to have her in our Harvest Barrie family.

Why is that Great I Am song so powerful every time it's played? I never want it to end. When we closed with it, once again, I was so fired up!

Pastor Todd brought a great word. Sure going to miss him but we'll be praying for him...(we need to, I suppose, after that message).

It should be exciting to have some guest teachers in over the summer. Next Sunday, Ian Hales from Harvest Durham will be with us and then on July 22 it'll be Scott Hamilton from Harvest Glasgow. Our very own Pastors Roger and Mike and elder chair Terry Codling will take us through the remainder of the summer. Be sure to love on them.

Great job with the food drive as well last Saturday - looks like we managed to get 3100 pounds of food. Way to bless the Barrie Food Bank!

What a sweet time we had together as the church again on Sunday! It was obvious that a bunch of our own church family members were off to cottages and campsites, hotels and resorts this week and that summer has indeed begun. But the chairs were nicely filled in with some guests vacationing in our area, including the McKee family from Harvest Bible Chapel Orlando!

It was great to have Joel Dugard leading worship and our worship director Jordan taking a turn in the drum cage.  We sang “Belongs to You” which the team sang for us for the first time last week. Strong lyrics and melody, the song was written by Joshua Seller from Harvest Oakville and is on their most current CD. Some of you probably grabbed one at the Celebration Weekend concert back in May. You can load it up from iTunes to add to your summer playlist.

Pastor Mike announced the “Flash Mob Food Drive” which is coming up this Saturday. That’s what Pastor Todd called it too. But our summer intern in charge of the event, Jordan Coros, called it the “Food Drive Flash Mob” (for the record, Pastor Roger called it the “Food Mob Flash Drive.”) Whatever you want to call it, come on out this Saturday and have some fun while helping the Barrie Food Bank.  Or as Roger calls it, the “Bank Barrie Food”.

Pastor Todd preached a unique sermon on Sunday. Since the passage dealt with leadership, he got the elders to sit right in front of him in the front row and parked the pulpit right at their knees and let us all listen in as he brought the Word to them. He said Pastor Roger, who was on vacation, would have to listen online, so here's the link for Roger and anyone else who missed out yesterday. I know the people around me got the message that this sermon wasn’t just for the elders, that’s for sure. It was clear to me that the Holy Spirit was bringing conviction to many in the crowd who were not within three feet of the preacher!

We’re wrapping up our ten-month journey in Hebrews next Sunday. Jordan tells me that you should come prepared to share a particular verse from the book that impacted you this year. It is mics in the aisles time!

At the end of the service, we gathered a crowd to pray over the youth Glasgow mission team. They are heading to Scotland on Friday to serve alongside the Harvest folks there. Pray for them as they lead a day camp ministry for unchurched kids and participate in worship on Sunday. Mike and Jeannie from our staff along with Craig Elliot, our Awana commander are leading the team.

I’m writing this on Monday morning, of course, after a great evening last night with some of my small group friends from Harvest. We took in the fireworks at Barrie’s beautiful waterfront to celebrate Canada’s 145th birthday. We are grateful for all the grace God has shown us in giving us this amazing country to live in. And for beating back the Americans in the War of 1812! (Happy Fourth of July, to my American friends!)

Hope you all have a great week!

Peace,

Eutychus

Another great Sunday at Harvest Barrie!

The parking ministry is really getting some nice weather, I'm sure they are thankful for their Sunday morning base tans. Another great reason to plug in there I suppose? #sarcasm

There was a great buzz in the lobby too, really exciting to be welcomed the way I was yesterday, despite the fact that people generally don't know who I really am...

I had a chance to swing by the grade 4-5 classroom yesterday to check out what goes on there, couldn't believe what I saw. The room was transformed into a shopper's delight.  These kids have been working really hard all year long and have racked up points for bringing their Bibles, using them, answering questions  and participating in class.  On Sunday they redeemed their points for some great rewards.  Great blessings come from obedience and diligence, eh? Praising God for our dedicated teachers and an amazing year of growth in our Harvest kids.

The worship was fantastic yesterday too, there is something about those spontaneous choirs that I just love! People getting up there worshipping their faces off, it's just great. I was tempted to go up, but with a voice like mine it may have really distracted people...love singing out that Yahweh song though, so powerful to hear the people of God shouting out his name.

Pastor Todd brought a great word yesterday also (listen here). It's a bittersweet feeling wrapping up Hebrews. I've learned so much during this year through it. Yesterday was another heavy hitting Sunday. We need to LOVE on one another, that got me in a big way. Easier said then done, really hoping to sense and see that love pouring out over the summer as we continue doing life together. Also was a great reminder of those pledge cards we filled out 16 weeks back, I must be honest, I had almost forgotten but it was still in my Bible and I don't recall being late so that feels alright!

Till next week friends.

Sometimes you just never know what you are going to get when you walk in the doors at Harvest Bible Chapel.  Once again the cuteness of the kids gave a great start to a phenomenal day!  You can catch the video below.  My dad’s been gone quite a while now but I sure am thankful he gave me a heritage of faith in a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

If you missed that important teaching you can listen to it here.  People’s worlds do get shaken up and I have seen the difference in those who have a strong foundation in Jesus Christ and salvation.  Apparently that is going to be even more important one day coming!

One thing from the message that gripped me was that I should be grateful for these things.  I have seen that in believers whose worlds were being rocked too.  They say things like, “God is so faithful,” and “I’m just so thankful for my salvation.”

They are grateful for little things too.  That is something that marked Moyra Marrable’s life.  Pastor Todd pointed out that we had a memorial service for her Saturday.  I left that service being grateful for and challenged by her life.

It’s always going to be a great Sunday when there are baptisms!  Each story was so filled with God’s working.  Love those double dunks too!  Pretty sure Pastor Roger’s the king of double dunking.  I heard somewhere he is Todd’s hero for that.  He was looking pretty relaxed in the hot tub at one point though.  But did you notice that so many of the stories were people who recently came to Christ?  So exciting to see that.  The youth who are “making their faith their own” show we have a vibrant youth ministry here.  That’s when God got hold of my life too!

By the way, I like to think I'm getting to know more and more people at Harvest, but sometimes I miss.  Can anyone let me know who the new tech guy working on recording was?

Where do I start?

Sunday’s worship had a lot going on. So where do I start? The Sudbury group in the 11:15 service? The child dedications for the Faris, Siebert and Holmes families? The not-quite-what-we-do-normally sermon by Pastor Todd? The interview with Kathy Pedersen? The testimony by Hilary Shewfelt?

Let’s go in reverse order sort of and start with Hilary. With one global intern already “out there” serving in St. Vincent (Chad Freeman), we have now commissioned another to serve at our partner church in Glasgow, Scotland. Hilary leaves Friday and will spend the next six months serving alongside the wonderful leaders and servants in Glasgow. She spoke well on Sunday morning during the worship time (and then went right back to playing keys), and is admittedly eager to get going and experience all God has for her over the next months. I know she was moved by the time of prayer following each service. Watch for reports from Hilary in the blog.

We also heard from Kathy Pedersen, the director of the Barrie Pregnancy Resource Centre which is in the midst of their annual major fundraising drive. The Baby Bottle campaign started on Mother’s Day and ends next Sunday on Father’s Day. Get those bottles filled and bring ‘em back so this Harvest compassion ministry partner can continue doing the great work they do.

As Kathy left the stage, Pastor Todd told us a bit about Motion 312 that is going before the House of Commons in Ottawa. Members of the Steingard small group are working on a petition to give to our MP Patrick Brown that calls for the creation of a parliamentary committee to examine the definition of life in the womb. Over a hundred signatures were gathered on Sunday. You can also sign this petition online.

The “life” theme continued as three families brought children to be dedicated in the two services. Nathan and Crystal Holmes brought their daughter Kaydence, Joel and Deanna Faris brought their newest daughter Lilah and Ian and Nicole Siebert brought their son Owen. It is always a blessing to witness this, and it was nice to see the babies all take it easy on Pastor Todd as he and Emilie subbed in for the vacationing Mike and Angie Armstrong.

As for our time in the Word, it was a bit different. First, the pulpit was out. That’s pretty rare. Second, we weren’t in Hebrews, which now seems weird after a full year of working through it pretty much every Sunday. Third, he had us looking at a bunch of passages…I think I counted about a dozen that we looked at or were referred to. Lots to chew on this week. And the things he raised about how God’s glory as been shining in our church this year are giving me a lot to be thankful for. And as he prayed at the end, I had no trouble saying “AMEN!” to the desire for EVEN MORE of God’s presence and power among us! If you had to miss church for some reason, take the time to listen to the audio.

And it was just cool to have a bunch of people from Sudbury worshipping with us at the 11:15 service. They are praying and hoping for a Harvest Bible Chapel in their northern city. We gathered with them post-service for prayer too.

It was announced that next Sunday is a BIG DEAL with baptisms happening. I love baptisms! I’ll be up at the front taking it all in! Hope to see you there.

In the meantime, have a super-blessed week in Jesus! To him be glory, eh?!

In some ways it might be easy to think, "Ok, how do we top last Sunday?!"  For sure we had a great weekend last week with James MacDonald and Meredith Andrews here, and now we look forward. Well this Sunday didn't disappoint. The message Pastor Todd delivered from Hebrews 12:12-17 again served as the 'convicting encouragement' that we all needed. We also took communion together which is essentially reminding ourselves of the gospel and our amazing Saviour Jesus Christ.

Jordan and the team led us in a special by All Sons and Daughters called Wake Up. You can download it here and it would be my recommendation that you pick up the whole album while you're at it.

Many of you are aware that the Griffin small group had put together a silent auction and dessert night on Saturday to raise money for Doug and Jen McLellan to install a wheel chair lift in their van for their son Sawyer. Well the auction raised about $15,000 which was amazing but left the family about $10,000 short. The original plan for the HOPE offering this Sunday was to give all the proceeds to Judi O'Donnell who had her home damaged by fire recently. Well the insurance company came through for Judi (The Lord came through for Judi) last minute which allowed the stage to be set for another miracle. Todd stood up and with absolutely zero notice, asked you to dig deep and provide the rest of the money for the McLellan's. Well, you pulled through in the clutch and raised just over $10,000!! How amazing is our Lord?!  Just so cool to see God work like that through people like us. This is a big day for our church.

To him be all the glory!

Good thing there isn't much to talk about this weekend...(enter sarcastic grin).

What an amazing weekend to wrap up our 10 year celebrations! The Lord has been good to our church, faithful all the way. We were so blessed to have Pastor James preaching this weekend and Meredith and Jacob in leading worship. She does not lack energy...and how great did our own Harvest Barrie team sound with her? Well done guys!

Pastor James brought a great word (listen here). The response each and every service was such an encouragement - people standing with hands on one another praying with conviction, praying that the Lord would move in their lives, in their circumstances, so so so powerful. The Lord has certainly anointed Pastor James's ministry, I was blessed to be a part of it this weekend.

Another highlight was the storylines video featuring John and Jeannie Coros's story - a great testimony of God's grace.

And for those of you that were lblessed to be at the concert, wow. Joshua Seller and his team opened up with an awesome set and Meredith continued the night with an amazing spirit of worship. Her openness and honesty with her songs is so amazing, the transparency there was great. Then to bring the night to a close they all got up together and ended with Revelation Song, 500 voices singing:

"Holy holy holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is to come."

A small taste of worship in heaven. Be sure to check out both of their CDs if you haven't already! (Meredith, Joshua)

For those of you visiting us this weekend, we were so blessed to have you. Hope you felt warmly welcomed. There may have been a different preacher and worship leader this weekend, but that's what occurs week after week at Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie. On behalf of all the volunteers who worked so hard this weekend, we'd love to see you again!

It seems I spend a lot of my time trying to remember important things.  Or being reminded not to forget.  Sometimes, “I forgot!” is a convenient excuse and perhaps an outright lie!  I sure found out Sunday that God doesn’t want me to forget this – discipline is for my good! (Listen to the message here.)

I am glad Pastor Todd clarified the phases of discipline; “Instruction, Correction and Consequences.”  I guess that I mostly get consequences, now that my parents aren’t parenting me directly, but I sure am glad God is still bringing instruction before correction.  I don’t want to treat that lightly!  I’m looking forward to the posts about parenting and the benefits of holiness in my life. Not sure how I feel about being told, “You are loved” at the end of the service though.

Somehow the announcements were a lot cooler with Mrs. Amy Passafiume, (nee Fotherby), making them!  Also glad to be sharing this long weekend with lots of family and visitors in our services.  I’m sure it was just a warm-up for next weekend though.  I am so excited about volunteering for celebration weekend.  I know that at our extra service on Saturday at 4 p.m., and two on Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., we will be busting at the seams.  I am really looking forward to the worship concert on Saturday night!

Pastor Todd reminded us that it all starts with prayer and that means I am making sure I am at Timothy at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.  That is part of my continuing pursuit of God so I can achieve the benefits of holiness, like seeing him.  It’s so moving to my spirit to be with a church that is going after these things!

Can I just ask, “Have you thought about how you can give a little extra push to our big weekend by doing something extra?”  I know would love to hear from you this week.

Peace (from righteousness),

Eutychus

It was a beautiful day inside and out on Sunday!

But before I get to that, let me just mention that Amy Fotherby, our Director of Welcome! and Integration at Harvest, was married on Saturday to Kevin Passafiume. It was a real blessing to be at the ceremony and reception and celebrate with them. God was glorified in how everything came off, I’d say.

As for that beautiful Sunday God provided, it was fun to start the service off with that video of the kids wishing their moms a Happy Mother’s Day. If you missed it that’s because you weren’t in the worship centre on time! Ha! But I’ve included it here in the blog so the moms can see their little cuties again.

The worship was powerful and passionate. I’m sensing a freedom in worship each week that just draws me in. I have the worship music rockin’ my iPod all the time, but getting together with the church to sing these songs to the Lord is just something else entirely. Love it!

We also heard Pastor Todd bring a strong word from Hebrews 12:1-3. The message was “Faith endures” and our time together in worship ended with a time of seeking God for endurance so that we would not grow weary or fainthearted. It was so cool to see all those small group leaders up front ready to pray for us to have greater endurance in the midst of the often-difficult circumstances of life.

And I’m taking some time this week to think about who is in my “cloud of witnesses.” Who are the ones I’m looking to as my examples of enduring faith? You should take sometime to do that too.

The worship aside, because it was Mother’s Day, we also launched our effort to raise funds for the Barrie Pregnancy Resource Centre though their annual Baby Bottle Drive. The BPRC is one of our partner ministries here in town that we actually had the privilege of founding in 2007. Now dozens of churches and many individuals in Barrie and Simcoe County support the ongoing work of the BPRC. So fill those baby bottles you picked up on Sunday and bring them back full on Father’s Day. If you didn’t get one, they will be available again this Sunday in the lobby.

Some big things are coming up in the next few weeks! On Tuesday, May 22 we’ll be getting together as the church to pray for the special celebration weekend with Pastor James MacDonald and Meredith Andrews. That happens May 26 and 27. If you don’t have your concert tickets, get them before we sell out. And plan on inviting friends and family to come to the three celebration services planned for that weekend.

Have a super week!

Praise God for how he just continues to pour himself out at Harvest Barrie.  It was highly evidenced again Sunday through some great worship and communion.  A song you should listen to again this week is "Jesus, Son of God." You can get it on iTunes here.

The message by Pastor Todd was another banger.  "Do you have a faith that believes?"  It came out of Hebrews 11:32-40.  God can literally do anything in our lives and with us if we simply believe that he can.  If you missed the service, be sure to catch up with the message online.

Another super cool thing being organized by one of our small groups is an amazing event happening June 2 at TCS to raise money for the McLellan family as they need $25,000 to install a wheelchair lift in their van for their growing son, Sawyer.  For more information or to learn how to donate or be a part please check out the Facebook group or website. This is a great opportunity for our whole church to gather with this small group in support of this family!

By the way, God is working in amazing ways like that through many of our small groups so.... if you're not in one.... WHY NOT?!  Talk to Amy Fotherby today (afotherby@harvestbarrie.ca) and get in one.

Have a great week!

Wow. What a Sunday. Amped up worship and a great message from Pastor Cristian Barbosu (listen to it here). I think the only thing that we lacked were people with cool accents…oh wait, not true at all.

Between Cristian and Jim Beattie, the church just looked so stylish yesterday, not even taking account of how great they sounded. It seemed to me that Jordan had picked a bad day to dress down. At least Pastor Todd and a few others got the purple memo…

It was truly a blessing though to hear and see all that the Lord is doing through Harvest Bible Chapels around the world. So often we can feel closed off here, like we are the only ones doing what we do, but what an encouragement to see that the Lord is working in some amazing ways. The video with all the people from different countries singing the same song in their native tongues was so amazing and touching, just a taste of what heaven may feel like!

The Duffs' video was amazing too, a great example of a strong faith through some big trials. Jordan’s challenge was so real to me…could I truly worship the Lord when ALL is stripped from me? Themed in so well with the message, hearing story after story of people who lost everything to follow Christ.  (We'll post the storylines video later this week.)

We don’t face much difficulty at all compared to our brothers and sister’s around the globe. Let’s really take the challenge ahead and take a stand for Christ wherever and whenever. Also remember to be praying for Chad Freeman as he’s on his way to St. Vincent now to serve the Lord for six months and also keep in mind Pastor Mike and the youth team that’s headed to Scotland soon!

You are loved.

What an incredible day!  Scott Hamilton said HBC Barrie took over the Hampton Inn for a family reunion and let them join it.  “It is like having breakfast together in the living room when we gather in the lobby.”  It was a great start to a day that just got better and better.

As if the workshops aren’t filling enough in themselves, sharing times in the hallways and after the sessions with people from all over the world makes them a full course meal!  There are so many stories of God’s surpassing grace here.  I met Pastor Norm Millar’s parents from London!  They brought more than 100 people!

Pastor James said every time a Canadian church is mentioned all the Canadians cheer to make it sound like every church has lots of people.  After an incredible worship set with a choir and unbelievable singing, he and Pastor Jeff from Elgin dissed how we worship, so when they sang another song a bunch of us rushed the stage.  Even Pastor Roger was dancing and singing up there!  Well – kind of clapping in time anyway.  They appreciated his enthusiasm.

A highlight was the Harvest Bible Fellowship time.  They commissioned the graduates from the school of ministry and prayed over them.  They had a storylines kind of video about the Peacocks from Calgary and prayed over them.  Six senior pastors shared the vision and practical implications of the theme for this year -  “Building strong leaders requires enduring commitments!”  Kurt vanMannen shared what God is doing in Nepal.  They had a video of one of their pastors.  The lady beside me wept because of his faith in spite of persecution.

Worship is certainly a highlight here and sure enough, we helped record a new song.  It is a powerful song about our unity and it was cool to see dozens of international believers on the stage singing it with us.  A taste of heaven!

I was saying how I loved hearing all the accents here when someone told me that I have one.  Jim Beattie said we all had one when he arrived in Canada.

Hmmm

Peace,

Eutychus

Where to begin???  With incredible excitement and anticipation we stepped into a jammed packed worship centre at Harvest Elgin on Monday morning and it kinda felt like a family reunion.  Hugs, tears and a whole lot of love were shared by many, as our huge Harvest family from all over the globe greeted one another.

Our day started with an incredible time of worship – and I mean – amazing high impact worship with 2,000 brothers and sisters all lifting high the name of Jesus together in song.  Hey, I just read that we are going to be recorded as we sing the song “We’re United” together – how cool is that?

We were blessed as Pastor James began teaching us from John 1:19 about Authentic Jesus – full of grace and truth.  I will never again think about grace without truth when meditating on who our Saviour truly is.  I can’t wait to hear the rest of this powerful message on Wednesday.

The rest of our day consisted of attending the first two of five workshops in our desired ministry track.  As our Harvest Barrie team met together over dinner, Pastor Roger invited us to share highlights from what we had learned.  It was amazing to hear how people were blessed in so many ways by the strong teaching.  We have team members involved in a number of different tracks – Communication, Preaching, Student Ministry, Compassion & Missions, Biblical Soul Care, Children’s Ministry, Leadership, Women’s Ministry, Elder Topics, Worship – and more.  I love how we’re striving to be excellent in these areas and how willing our Harvest family is to be used by God for his glory.

We also met together as regions.  So cool to see all of the leaders and people from the Canadian Region gather to share, plan and pray together...and to know that the same thing was happening throughout the campus with the other regions around the world.

The day didn’t end there!  Remember when our own Pastor Todd was esteemed as ‘Senior Pastor of the Year’ in 2011?  Well, he received the honour of preaching at HU 2012.

While this task may have been daunting for some, he looked right at home proclaiming the authority of God’s Word in Elgin, Illinois.  It was a message we all needed to hear – but especially encouraging to those enduring difficult and dark days.  In walking us through Genesis 40, we learned that;
a) no situation should trap you;
b) no injustice should crush you; and
c) no loneliness should consume you.
Wish you all could’ve been there – it was a great time for our Harvest Barrie family.

Todd presented HBF executive director, Kent Shaw, with his own Team Canada jersey, commemorating 10 Canadian church plants in 10 years.

God is at work at Harvest Bible Chapel and it’s clearly evident at Harvest University 2012.  If you didn’t make it this year – plan on it next year.

P.S.  Four of the Harvest Youth at HU, enjoying this incredible opportunity.

Hello from Chicagoland!  I am down here for Harvest University (#HarvestU) with 57 other people from Barrie and I am really excited!  There are around 2000 coming from all over the world for training and encouragement.

We started with worship and prayer last night and though many had not arrived yet, including many of our contingent, it was great!  To be here some of us had to miss worship and the Word at home.  Boo!  I listened to it online last night and it was another great challenge from Hebrews.  You can hear it here. The curriculum is up and even if your SG isn’t meeting there is a lot to think about in the questions.  Check them out here.  I think my choice to be here just might be one of those life-transforming decisions.

I heard many enjoyed the “scaled back worship team”.  Many from the worship teams are here.  Pray they will be renewed and blessed.  Look out for next week when they are back and charged up!  If it seemed like there were less people around after second service it's because they were hitting the road to get down here.  Pray they will be greatly encouraged and learn lots!

There are ten different teaching tracks offered and we have people in all of them.  There is so much to learn!  The main sessions are powerful times of seeing what God is doing in Harvest Bible Chapels around the world and then digging into God’s Word along with great worship!  I’m looking forward to Pastor Todd bringing it this evening and I know he would appreciate your prayers.

Well, the first session is starting so I have to go.

Stay tuned!

The Sunday after Easter Sunday picked right up where we left off last week…passionate worship and a powerful message from God’s Word. It was a no-holds-barred message…like we walked into church and got slammed with a piece of rebar across the forehead! Especially for husbands and fathers.

From three pretty non-descript verses in Hebrews 11:20-22, we learned that Isaac, Jacob and Joseph, with all of the ups and downs of their faith, still managed to pass on a blessing to future generations. We even started by just defining what a blessing even is. I know I sometimes use that phrase a little flippantly. It was hard not to be convicted by this one. If you weren’t in the room for it, check it out online.

Toward the end of the message it got real practical when Pastor Todd built off of some reading he was doing in John Trent’s book, The Blessing. I thought it would be helpful for you to have this. We heard that the formal aspects of The Blessing include loving touch (laying your hands on your son or daughter) and making sure you actually say it; verbalizing the blessing in a clear way. The content of the blessing itself has three elements: (1) Personal Commitment (The Blessing of Love) - “I am here for you”; as you share your unconditional commitment to him/her, to be there for them, as God gives you strength, for the duration; …and that’s going to flow from you knowing that God committed his Son to die on your behalf and that he mediates for you as your advocate before the Father; you know you’re loved and cherished by him; (2) Affirmation of Worth (The Blessing of Identity) - “You are valued”; as you let them know that out of all the children in the world, you’re grateful God gave them to you; affirm their worth and identity in Christ; …and you have to know your value in Christ as his sons and daughters if you’re going to do this for your sons and daughters; and (3) Expression of potential for the future (The Blessing of Purpose) - “You have so much ahead of you”; you see potential in them for a great future, and that their strengths and gifts are things God can use to help their own family, the church and others; …and you have to know what your potential is in Christ (not pie in the sky nonsense, but a faith-filled expectation that God is with you to do exceedingly, abundantly above all you could ever ask or think.

Pastor Roger is going to contribute some further resources for any moms and dads who really want to get on this and make some changes in their homes to ensure they’re passing on a blessing as the patriarchs did.

As far as modeling it…well, you couldn’t miss Brian and Boaz Langford serving on the parking team before the 9 a.m. service. There’s a dad showing his son something good…passing on a blessing to future generations, for sure! Wondering if we can get orange vests to fit the junior parking attendant.

And is was modeled too in Pastor Todd’s interview just prior to the message.  It is always exciting to have people from our church family sense the call to serve in ministry vocationally, and Pastor Todd introduced us to Chad Freeman on Sunday. He’s heading to Harvest Bible Chapel St. Vincent for the next six months to serve as an intern and continue the process of figuring out God’s will and direction for his future ministry. He shared a couple of solid, Scripture-based prayer requests, and many of you pledged by raising your hands to pray for him. As a reminder, here’s what Chad asked us to pray:

-     Luke 12:31-32  But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided for you.  Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom; and

-     Ephesians 1:17-19 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.  I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe, according to the working of his great strength.

Powerful!

Between services there was great Welcome@Harvest meeting with about a dozen newcomers to Harvest who are checking out whether or not God is leading them to be part of our church family.

I thought I’d mention too that on Saturday members of our Summer Glasgow Team as well as men from our two MIA groups (Men in Action) did an extensive trimming of the brush that was choking the woods behind our Bayfield Street office. The woods are part of the YMCA property and the crew did this to make the view from the office better as well as to help the Y out with its annual property clean up.

It was a great day together.  And like Pastor Todd said, it just seems to be such a long time between Sundays! Talk to you next Monday from Harvest University in Chicago!

God bless you…and I mean that!

Unbelievable weekend... Hopefully you read that first word and equate it with "amazing/sensational/phenomenal/astounding" as opposed to "not believable."  It's truly awe-inspiring and life-changing to think through what Christ has done for us.  The Good Friday service left us with such an appropriate sense of unresolved feelings as we came face to face with the gruesome death of Jesus on the cross.  Of course it's just so necessary to go there before we can ever get to the celebration...

But thankfully there is reason for celebration and that's exactly what we did Sunday - so cool to hear everyone shout out the victory cry as we celebrate that death has been defeated and there is now no condemnation for those in Christ - he is RISEN!  And how amazing is it that there were those who stood up and claimed that victory for themselves for the very first time?!  Unbelievable indeed.

A song that has been a big part of our worship the last few weeks is called Holy (Wedding Day) by The City Harmonic.  It's a fantastic album you should pick up this week for sure.  Here's the link to that song in iTunes so check it out.

I know from where I sit each week, the great effort that goes into a worship service and I could see an amazing extra effort from staff and volunteers that went into our Good Friday and Easter Sunday worship. Extra staging, extra lighting, extra audio equipment, extra people (loved the choir!), extra instruments (loved the drummers!), extra, extra, extra cool!  I am so grateful to be part of a church family that is giving it up for JESUS! To him be glory!

Have a great week - don't lose your focus on what Easter is all about.  It's not just a holiday that comes and goes.  It's the foundation to all we believe and everything our lives are about.  Now go shout it out with everything inside you.

Every time we get together as the church, I just love it. Can’t wait for the next Sunday to roll around after the last of the chairs are packed away and the storage units stowed.  I saw a couple of post-service tweets that nailed it for me…

@hshewfelt Another amazing Sunday @HarvestBarrie!! Run hard: Faith obeys...exactly what I needed to hear!!

@johncoros LOVE WORSHIPPING WITH OUR CHURCH @HarvestBarrie The only thing better will be when we are before His throne #cantwait

Captures my heart exactly!

That amazing Sunday started with great worship. It was so great to see Steve Dobbs up there leading again. And did you find our worship director Jordan? He gave the drummers a Sunday off and climbed into the drum room himself. After the service he told me that he said he got a whole new perspective from in there!

The service closed with Luke on keys and Jordan singing “Holy (Wedding Song)” by The City Harmonic. What a powerful little song. Pastor Todd said that we’d be hearing the song again on Good Friday. It bridged the theme of this past Sunday’s message perfectly into thinking about the crucifixion of Christ and the reality that because of his sacrifice, death’s sting has been removed. So grateful for that! If you want to hear that song, you’ll have to get it from iTunes. No YouTube link to it.

Pastor Todd’s message shredded me as usual. We opened to Hebrews 11:8-19 and heard about the four signs of faith-filled obedience. He was right, we don’t like the notion of having to obey, and his five objections were on the mark for me. And the whole idea of being ready to be in heaven with the Lord, no matter how good it might be here and now, really struck me. We’re made for that better, heavenly country. If you didn’t hear the message, you really need to check it out online.

Sunday was also a pretty big day from a technical standpoint as several pieces of audio equipment that were overdue for replacement got…uh, replaced finally. The audio techs were all geeked-up on Saturday putting everything in place. Aside from a few small glitches, everything went incredibly well. And I know that Jordan and the staff are super grateful for the audio tech guys who put a ton of work into making the sound great each week. Among other things, the new equipment gives us greater capability in quality recording which will improve our radio and online presence and will eventually give us the ability to live-stream to the web as well as produce video for campus sites. So cool!

While we were meeting in the worship centre, our grade 4-6 Higher Ground kids were having a Seder or Passover meal as a way of better understanding the account of Jesus’ last week on earth and the message of salvation that is pictured in that meal. So grateful for Devyn and Caroline who put so much into their teaching. These kids are blessed! Check out the pics.

There are only a few short days left to get those Good Friday and Easter invitations into the hands of the people God has put into your life. As Pastor Roger said, they will often come if you make the invitation personal. If you can’t get a print invite into their hands, use this link.

By the way, I just signed up for Twitter (@EutychusBarrie) …so start following me, k?

I’ll be blogging again next Monday. It’ll be, “The Monday Blog about Good Friday and Easter Sunday”. What a weekend we have ahead of us as we remember the death of Christ and celebrate his resurrection to new life!

To him be glory!

Let me say right up front that there was so much about this week that was incredible that I’m not sure where to begin!  Personally, I thought it was a sweet time of communion listening to God’s Word read over us.  Then I got hit between the eyes about whether my worship was that of Cain or that of Abel.  The difference is faith.  Do you struggle with whether you’re actually worshipping by faith?  I sometimes do.   But I’m keeping at it – yup, “by faith.”

Then I got hit with, “What am I known for?”  This is the second week in a row I’ve been challenged about this!  What is the testimony, the witness, of my life?  I guess the question is not, “What would I like on my tombstone?” or, “What would others put on my tombstone?” but, “What would God put on my tombstone?”  That’s going to take some serious reflection!

I know Pastor Todd is right about finding intimacy with God.  It doesn’t happen without personal disciplines and community relationships.  I am so thankful for my small group.  I heard that in one SG last week, they affirmed the guys because of how they treated their wives.   That’s a good thing for you married types to be known for!  Along that line, here is that quote from J. Oswald Saunders to think about:

We are at this moment as close to God as we really choose to be. True, there are times when we would like to know a deeper intimacy, but when it comes to the point, we are not prepared to pay the price involved.

One thing that really affected me was the “missing page.”  I would hope that it’s more than just a feeling, though it certainly was that.  I can’t shake that picture.  It’s just too real.  If you don’t know what I mean you better listen to the message.  Then get some of those invitations to the Easter services into someone’s hands!  You can also use the online link and send it to a friend by e-mail, or tweet it, (or send it by papyrus like me).

Isn’t it true that behind every good thing here there is someone working hard to make it happen?  The Awana leaders did a great job last Saturday and the drum surround looks great!  I’m so thankful to work for Christ alongside the 80%!  By the way, I did finally find out why we are really supposed to sign the Friendship Register every week.  It’s to make sure none of us followed Enoch!

Peace,

Eutychus

It was an amazing March day as we gathered together on Sunday morning. Seems bunches of people were still away for March Break, and yet we had a good group of people worshipping the Lord Jesus together.

The worship was great as usual. The song line up took us vertical in a big way. So grateful for our worship teams and Jordan’s leadership. He introduced a new song that we will be singing together on Easter Sunday. Paul Baloche’s “We are Saved” is not on YouTube, but you can download it for free here and also watch the video by Baloche for the song, “The Same Love”. Very cool!

And about Easter, Pastor Todd let us know that we will have invitations in our hands soon to give to people to invite them to Good Friday and Easter Sunday services. This is the best opportunity in the year to have your loved ones join you at Harvest. Let’s take advantage of their willingness to come and boldly invite them!

Back to the service. With Pastor Mike preaching at Harvest Muskoka, Pastor Todd filled in on child dedications with his daughter Emilie helping out. Pierre and Trina Ouellette brought Chloe to be dedicated at the 9 a.m. service and Daniel and Leanne Roberts brought Crystal at 11:15 AM.  The Ouellettes' dedication was done with a little French and a little English to recognize Pierre’s first language and hopefully one Chloe will speak someday! Emilie read this as Chloe’s verse: Psaume 139:23, “Sonde-moi, ô Dieu, et connais mon coeur! Éprouve-moi, et connais mes pensées!”

We were also strongly encouraged to get our Meredith Andrews concert tickets before they’re all gone! Stop by the office this week and don’t be left out. We were rightly called out for our “late-to-sign-up-ways” and Pastor Todd doesn’t want any of us crying on his shoulder when we can’t get tickets!

The message in Hebrews 11:1-3 was powerful as we considered what faith really is. God does call us to “run with endurance the race set before us” (Hebrews 12:1), and that has to be done even in the face of how hard life is. If you missed the message, check it out here.

I’m looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for our evening of prayer and praise. This is going to be a great time of worship and Word based prayer.

Have an amazing week!

Even though the challenge to be on time arrived at the same time as the loss of an hour…I’d say we did a fantastic job despite the loss! For those of us that really had a hard time getting up, I’m sure you were praising the Lord for the 11:15 a.m. service this weekend. What a service to be on time for though! I love that there is variety and newness in the services; the newness certainly wasn’t the songs this week seeing as they were written hundreds of years ago, but I loved that they are still relevant and still powerful in the church. And hearing the history of “Come Thou Fount” was very impacting to me indeed.  Don’t mess with the word of the Lord, or your life may be changed!

A challenging message this week too. Fear is something a lot of us face. There are so many “flinchers” in our midst, as we saw by a show of hands yesterday, and so many things that cause us to cower. Don’t let a softball to the face do that for you! Rather, fear the judgment of the Lord that is imminent! It’s so easy to not think of the judgment of the Lord. We get comfortable where we are at, with all of our “stuff” and it’s meaningless compared to what we have in the Lord.  “It Is Well” was an amazing way to end our time too. When people respond to what the Lord’s put on their hearts it’s an amazing thing. To Him Be Glory, for what he’s doing in our midst!

Well it was a great Sunday... to be on time... Todd brought the hammer from Hebrews 10:19-25 which was all about the unwavering confidence we have to draw near our Lord because of his shed blood for us.  (You can listen here.) That's just flat out encouraging as we sort through our own sinfulness in light of what Christ has done.  Hopefully verse 25 was also encouraging to you as it urged us to not be, "neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."  Still encouraged??  Without question that verse is a big challenge - are we committed to gathering with our church family on Sundays, and with our small groups throughout the week?  And are we on time to these things and our hearts prepared for what God would have for us? Worthy questions to ask yourself this week as you meditate on the passage.  At the end of the message, Pastor Todd led us through a commitment card covering the next 16 weeks and a commitment to Worship, Walk and Work for Christ.  Don't let that commitment get away from you. You can download the card here.  Post it on your fridge as a reminder to "not neglect."

Jordan took his first crack at announcements which was entertaining (unless you were a guest), and the team did a fine job of leading us to the throne room of Christ in worship.  One of the songs we sang was Give me Faith. Give it a listen and have a great week.

It is so good to get together with God’s people and the LORD has been doing a great work each week in our hearts and lives.

With Jordan and Roxie away in Chicago for the week to participate in the live worship recording, Matt MacDonald, a member from Harvest Bible Chapel Oakville, brought along Jake McKee and lead worship along with our team.  Matt has been here before, of course, and once again blessed us with his leadership.

I was speaking with a couple of people who were impacted by Sunday’s message in Hebrews 10:1-18.

It was a very powerful message and cleared up a lot for him.  He's understanding the reasons for God’s requirement in the Old Testament as being a precursor for the coming of Christ. And I'm loving that sacrifices are no longer necessary! And loving that God looks at the heart and not the ritual.

Another person wondered what it might be like to get through a message without tears flowing. The reminder that we can’t simply stand still in our walk with Christ hit hard again. To do so is to invite drift in our lives. God’s intention for us is to progress day by day in our walk with him…continually being sanctified. Am I seeing growth?

I stayed for two services because I wanted to hear what Pastor Todd was going to say about the “JESUS” display that’s been on the stage for the last couple of months. He went to point to it in first service and realized that it hadn’t been put out. And he made a bit of a big deal about it. So the crew made sure it was out for second…and then he didn’t even refer to it! Ha!

By the way, in the message, we were challenged to test whether or not we were progressing and Pastor Todd went through a list of things to think about. He went through it kind of fast, so I got it from him. Take a look.

Are you seeing progress…

  • in your understanding of the Scriptures
  • in your intimacy with the Lord
  • in your passion to serve
  • in your love for the lost
  • in your holiness

Plenty to think about there!

At the end of our time together, Pastor Todd reminded us of two important things: First, this Thursday night, we will be in Collingwood for an Evening of Worship and the Word. Check out all the details. If you live in that area, be sure to join us!

And second, that we start a new section of Hebrews titled, “Run Hard” next Sunday and that the first passage we will look at will deal with, among other things, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together”. The choice, he said, was clear; choose to come and hear a message about faithfully coming to worship, or skip out so you don’t have to hear that.  Wondering what attendance will be like next Sunday?!

It was another powerful time of worship as we gathered together as the church yesterday. So great to meet some new people and to see God’s glory evident in our midst.

The worship team had a bit of a different look and feel with a more acoustic set. They even took the drum surround down and “uncaged” Woody.  Ben was playing a sweet acoustic bass, and Luke was using a micro-synth and midi-keyboard connected to a Macbook (does that qualify as “acoustic”?). The sound was great and the team led us to the Lord in heartfelt worship. Loved singing, “Give Me Jesus” as we closed the service.

There were also mics in the aisles and Jordan opened things up for us to go up and read a passage. So many great things we heard. So true that when you know the personal stories of some of those who shared a Scripture passage, it makes it so much more impactful.

Pastor Todd’s message in Hebrews 9:15-28 had us considering and eagerly waiting for “the promised eternal inheritance”…an inheritance that is already being poured out in some significant ways to his children. If you didn’t make it yesterday, you should listen to the message. Check it out online. The sermon notes and small group study questions are all available to you.

Todd also made an announcement just before he preached about a certain staff member who got engaged on Saturday night… Amy Fotherby, our Director of Welcome and Integration will be married this spring to Kevin Passafiume, who has recently come to us from Harvest Bible Chapel York Region. Congrats, Amy and Kevin!

During the service we also witnessed three families (two at 9 a.m. and one at 11:15) bring children to be dedicated to the Lord. The Langford family (all nine of them!) brought Jubilee and Tehillah to be dedicated, the Barrett family (all seven of them!) brought Asher to be dedicated, and Mike and Stephanie Marsh (all three of them!) brought Paisley before the Lord. What a joy it is for us to celebrate the gift of God in these precious children! Pray for these families as they rear their children for the glory of God.

I’m writing this while a bunch of Harvest families take advantage of this mid-winter holiday and the amazing weather to do some sledding and play snow-football at Sunnidale Park. Great times!

That’s it for me.  Have an amazing week! Hope there’s an eagerness for the things of Christ in your heart all week long.

Yet, another 10 year celebration! Pastor Robbie Symons, from Harvest Oakville, in the house this time. Pastor Todd certainly wasn’t bluffing when he said Robbie had energy and passion. I'm pretty sure he was speaking at a rate of over 5000 words a minute…but the more amazing part about that, was the fact that I feel everyone grasped each and everyone of them, I know I certainly did!

Robbie spoke out of Romans 12:1-2, tiled “Healthy Heart = Renewed Mind” A great message with so much takeaway, but there was one thing that really stuck out to me. He gave us five very practical ways for having our minds renewed daily:

1.     Get a Bible-reading plan. There are so many things out there nowadays, check out these great options:

2.     Get a place. Find a place where you can do it consistently, comfortably and quietly.

3.     Get a pull. Proverbs 26:14 “As a door turns on its hinges, so does a sluggard on his bed” How was your wakeup this morning?

4.     Get a pen. Write stuff down and ask questions.

5.     Get a prayer. Pray without ceasing. How can we know God if we don’t talk with him?

I trust that you will use these steps, to draw near to the Lord and renew your mind on a daily basis!

We had a great time of worship this weekend as well, as Jordan and the team led us focusing on the Lord’s faithfulness in our church both in the past, in the present, and in things to come. We worship an AWESOME God.

The story of Brian Langford was the highlight of the package for me. Real stories of the people of God being challenged and having their faith tested. Brian’s sincerity and honesty was so humbling and challenging for me. The way the video was set into that song that Amber and Jordan sang was so great as well, celebrating that Brian had been set free from the bitterness that had gripped his heart for so long.

Have a great week digging into God’s Word!

Well a huge day at Harvest this Sunday.  We had 21 people enter the waters of baptism!  12 of them were youth and 3 of the 21 were spontaneous - in other words, they woke up not thinking they'd be baptized and left church having gotten it done - obeyed God's command to proclaim God's saving work in their life.  Amazing, really.  So many clear testimonies of life change through Jesus Christ.  So many people rejoicing.

Todd once again brought the hammer from Hebrews 9 with another bold message - so clearly explaining to us all that nothing but the blood of Jesus Christ can save us from sin.  Nothing but Christ's saving work can bridge the gap our sins have created between us and God.

We also heard this great new song called One Thing Remains that Jordan and the band led us through.  Check it out below because we'll definitely be singing it together soon.

Back to baptism for a second... if you know that you still need to obey the command to be baptized, be sure to connect with one of the church staff this week. We'll be doing this again soon and we'd love to get you signed up.
Thank God for all he's doing  - its phenomenal to be a part of it!

“God is greater than our technical difficulties!”  That direct quote from Jordan was backed up by Todd’s message about Christ’s much more excellent work!  Wow, I often settle for mediocrity even though I know “good enough isn’t good enough!”  Jesus has so much more for me than I can get on my own or from anywhere else.

How great was it to hear how God is working in our young people?  Did you notice some of them helping to serve communion?  I think that is so great!  I feel like tweeting that!  Are you on Twitter?  Are you following @harvestbarrie?   While I’m asking, what other social media are we sharing together?

We have:

Facebook
e-mails & newsletters from various ministries
the on-line bulletin
listening on line
downloading the SG curriculum
the memory project
Weekend Warriors for praying

There really is no reason not to be connected is there?  And speaking of praying and being connected, what a great time we had Sunday night.  If you were there don’t forget to e-mail a staff member your thoughts.  Did you see all those cards, all those names?  It was cool to be reminded that by praying we are sharing together in the gospel.   But it can’t stop there.  Lord, give us boldness!

Well, one of the greatest moments of the morning service was to look around to see all the hands lifted as we sang “The Stand.”  We really are longing to open our hearts to God.  I see it in my small group and in our gatherings and I hope in my personal life and in yours!

Peace,

Eutychus

Pastor Todd felt a little uncomfortable, it seems, letting us know he and his wife Cheryl were in Orlando last week. They were blessed to be part of the Harvest Bible Fellowship senior pastors and wives retreat and then to tack on some vacation days. He evidently came back fired up to preach! More about that in a sec.

Sunday morning set up—from an audio point of view—didn’t go very well. Still not sure why, but the worship team didn’t really get to practice until about 8:30. That’s late. There were some as yet unexplained technical issues that kept some critical components from working.

As the clock ticked closer to the start of the 9 a.m. service, the prayer team (they walk the halls and rooms prior to the services lifting their prayers to the Lord for all that will go on in the facility that morning) was sent off to another room to pray in light of the technical issues we were facing and the subsequent lack of rehearsal time for the worship team. Within minutes of that happening, suddenly what wasn’t working worked.

In light of the fact that we set up and tear down each week, it is remarkable that we don’t have more issues with our audio equipment. And I know that the church is grateful for the behind the scenes effort that goes into making our worship such a great experience week by week.

All in all, the worship was very capably led by Chad Ballantyne and team and the audio equipment gave us no more trouble for the balance of the morning. What do you say we praise God for that!

As for the message (I said we’d get back to this), it was a tough one; a pronounced warning about being in the church without actually being saved. Pastor Todd was "no-holds-barred" taking on multiple church traditions including our own, citing his greatest fear being that people in our own church might someday hear the words of Jesus from Matthew 7:21-23, “Depart from me, I never knew you.” At the same time, we received such assurance as he pointed to Hebrews 7:21 and let us all know that God’s not changing his mind about us. His love for us is sure. If we are called as his children, no one is ever snatching us out of his hand (see John 10:28). Love that!

If you’ve missed out on any of the Truly Epic series messages in Hebrews, you can listen to them here. I’m certain there’s going to be some great discussions in small groups this week as we digest this one!

Meanwhile, our junior highs and their leaders were off at their Winterfuse retreat in the Muskokas with kids from the other Ontario Harvest Bible Chapels. Pastor Mike reports that little sleep was had and many decisions for Christ were made over the weekend.  Praise God for that! The decisions, that is.

That’s all I have in my notes. Have a great week!

Phenomenal Sunday, straight up.  It was clear that God's presence was among us as we lifted him up in worship. And how cool was it to lay hands on Clement Bamikole?!  We are so blessed as a church to have a man of God who has been called into this position of leadership. Make sure you're praying for him, along with the rest of our elders, as they carry the heavy burden of leading God's church.

It was also really cool learning a ton more about Melchizedek -- oh wait, I mean Jesus.  Todd did a great job of bringing clarity to the Scriptures as he tackled a pretty tough passage in Hebrews 7:1-10. It would be worth working through it again this week on your own as you examine your own life. Is Jesus the King of righteousness and peace over your life?  There was a strong call to embrace salvation in Christ - have you?  And are you displaying the gospel clearly in your life as a witness to others?  It's all about Jesus, hopefully that's locked in your mind.  Be sure to come out next week as we dive even deeper.

Oh, and don't forget to pray for Harvest Nicaragua which relaunched yesterday as well. Below you can see the introduction of the Nicaragua team at last year's Harvest University. Pray God's richest blessings on them and for years of fruitfulness in the gospel.

I was coming to church really hoping that there would be huge “JESUS” sign on stage.

I was also hoping that Todd would “hijack” the announcements from Roger for a financial update.

Special offering (last six weeks of 2011) - $40,500
"If they were mine" and Awana baskets  - all 72 children cared for; total given $5,582; money also used for water purification and to help other needy families living around the orphanage
Ways to Give:
1.  Pre-authorized offering (automatically withdrawn from your account according to your schedule)
2.  Online giving (donate through Canada Helps or through your bank)
3.  Offering envelopes (available in your Friendship Register or from ushers)
More info: www.harvestbarrie.ca/giving

I was also hoping for a great time of worship and the Word too…

And who would have thought that all my hopes and dreams would come true January 8, 2012!

If you missed this Sunday, you’ll notice that you missed quite a bit of action. All of the above was true of the service, and if you picked up a theme of hope in my phrasing, it’s because it was a central theme of Todd’s message. We were challenged to really search where our hope is grounded in.

It’s so easy for us to say we trust in God and that our hope lies in him, but when it comes down to it we lack so much faith in that area. We hope for better things ahead but so often turn to quick fixes to help us cope with the difficulties that come our way.  "Biblical hope is a confident expectation and desire for something good in the future. I expect it to happen. It will happen." (John Piper)

Jesus Christ is a steadfast anchor. He will not be moved. We won’t be moved when our faith and hope lie firmly in him. So fitting when Todd used Trevor Peacock and his family’s situation with his daughter Hope to hammer in this point. Todd shared a quote that Trevor tweeted before all of the medical complications occurred - such a powerful line in and of itself.

“God’s will is exactly what you would desire if you knew all the facts.” (Bill Thrasher)

Meditate on that for a while as we head into next week's message, “Jesus: King of righteousness; King of peace”.

Looking forward to then!

Happy New Year!  Though it felt more like a daylight saving time shift to head in for a 10 a.m. service!  It struck me that for a lot of volunteers there is just as much work for one service as there is for two.  I sure appreciate those who join me in getting things ready.  I thought it was great for Mike to point out that the real heroes are those who work and then come to church.  I know a couple of people who often have to come straight to church from work.  I guess I shouldn’t be too quick to judge if I see someone nodding a little!

One thing I learned from Mike’s message is that my new BFF (Best Friend Forever) is the one who is a truth-telling person.  I don’t always like to hear it but I need someone who is not letting me off the hook.  I need a Nathan, and then I need to agree with God about the truth and throw myself on God’s mercy.  Actually, though I need to be confronted once in a while, I need more of a compatriot that is walking with me and regularly encouraging me to do better!  That is what is actually happening in my small group! I heard someone comment that Mike’s last point could be a whole other message.  We really are knit together and influence each other.  I’m glad for that and I’m beginning to realize the responsibility it puts onto my own walk with Christ.  If you missed the first message of the New Year you can hear it here.

Thanks to Joel for leading worship and introducing a new song.  You can get familiar with it below and the whole set list is here.

While we don’t know what 2012 is bringing, it was good to be reminded that just as God was faithful in 2011 we can trust him each new day.  I was glad to hear how Pastor Trevor and Heather Peacock are leaning on him for their daughter Hope.  Glad to be able to share our senior pastor with the Calgary Harvest Bible Chapel.  I’m looking forward to hearing how it went and pray their congregation was encouraged.

I’m on day two of my new Bible reading plan.  Looking forward to the changes my small group will see in me, and that I’ll see in them this year.  Some of those guys really need some work!  :-)

Peace,

Eutychus

Well, it was a bit of an unusual weekend in that Harvest didn’t have a Sunday service for the first time in 10+ years! Instead, the church gathered for two powerful Christmas worship services on Friday and Saturday.

The house was pretty packed both nights, and those who came experienced passionate worship and a strong presentation of the good news of Jesus Christ through songs, readings and preaching.  Seeds of the gospel were planted in the hearts and minds of many, many guests both nights.

One of the highlights of the service was definitely the Storylines video testimony of Chris and Angie Harrison.  You can listen to it again right here.

It was cool to see the room set up in a different way allowing us to see and hear each other better as we worshipped. It caught people a bit when they came through the doors to find their usual seat was not in its usual place! So many commented on how cool it was to have the chairs arranged that way.

I know it took a bunch of volunteers to make the whole thing happen, not the least of whom were the those on the worship team, those serving in tech roles and the set up guys who were stretched to think and work a little differently this time around.  There were also extra Welcome! Ministry team members (parking attendants, greeters, ushers) and workers in Higher Ground who cared for the youngest of the children.

The people who do the head counts say that there were more than 900 in attendance over the two nights. And we praise God for that! We have never had a Christmas Eve service attendance even close to that before.

In that number were, as I said before, many, many guests. Maybe you invited someone and they came. Maybe they didn’t. But you asked. Pastor Roger wrote in Friday’s blog that,

An invitation is a game-changer!  It redraws the lines of communication.  It opens up a new topic of conversation; or re-opens it.  It’s an opportunity to identify with Jesus and – lets. be. clear. – it changes the expectations others may have of you.

Now, if the people you invited didn’t come, that’s cool too. He went on to say, “Because even an invitation refused has opened up the conversation.” And that’s where the mission continues. The passion of those services should compel us on to invite them again and to keep the conversation about Jesus Christ going.

Pastor Todd said in the services that his intentions were clear. He wanted unbelievers in the room to become believers.  He hoped that no one was confused by his intentions.  In fact, I’m thinking none of us should be confused about that being our #1 mandate as Christ-followers…live for Christ and speak for Christ.

I’m looking forward to Pastor Mike’s message next Sunday. I hear there’s only one service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, January 1.  Maybe I’ll see you there!

Grace,

Eutychus

"Go tell it on the mountain!" It seemed to be an anthem this Sunday at Harvest Barrie. We were blessed once again by another choir this weekend, maybe not as cute as the one last week (debatable?), but boy could we hear them and it sounded great!

They kicked it off with a new version of the old Christmas classic, "Go tell it on the Mountain" and it was so fun that Pastor Todd requested they even do it again! (pulling rank he did) If you enjoyed this version be sure to check out the band that wrote it, their name is Seabird and the CD is called "Over the hills and everywhere". One week left to rock out to Christmas tunes so get it fast!

This week we are celebrating the birth of our Saviour so why not have a baby dedication? We had three beautiful children up there during the 9 am. service that Mike and Ang had the privilege of dedicating to the Lord. Mike handled little Cooper Fox who was fast asleep with finesse and serious skill and managed to not wake him at all. I guess practice makes perfect. Sounds like Mike may have gotten a little work out during it too! ; )

A practical message this weekend again as well. "When they saw it" was the title and it asked seven questions that challenged us to change this year. Jesus Christ came to earth to save us from our sins, and that demands change in our lives, living for him! It was a great message and an encouragement indeed. The passage, Luke 2:8-20, was read by a couple of great guest readers. The challenge before the message was great too, hearing Todd talk to a couple who's life change began at a Christmas service at Harvest years ago. I'm excited to see the whole video of their story at our Christmas Eve services!

We need to make sure to invite people out to the services as we will have such a clear gospel presentation both nights. I've heard that there's something special planned for these services unlike any others we've done. I'm so excited to bring glory to our king! If you need to email your invitation, you can find it on our website: www.harvestbarrie.ca/ChristmasEve

Hope to see you all the 23rd and 24th,  and remember to !

“Surely God is in this place!” That was the first thing Pastor Todd said as he got up to preach Sunday’s message. And he was right.

Up to that point we had engaged in some amazing worship that included our kids and youth choir.  It was so good to see them up there bringing it to the Lord along with our worship team and then singing All the Poor and Powerless during the offering. I was definitely meeting with the Lord on Sunday and by what I saw around me, others were pretty engaged in worship too.

And it was so cool to see Jeannie Coros, our children’s ministry director up there doing the welcome and announcements. I appreciated so much her heart as she prayed.

The sermon was titled, “We feel sure of better things” and came out of what Pastor Todd called the most controversial passage in the entire Bible, Hebrews 6:1-12. I saw a Tweet by some small group members who said how eager they were to get together Sunday night to talk it all out. They are savouring the solid meat of the Word!

As the sobering message closed, Pastor Todd appealed to those who were not yet saved to give their life to Jesus Christ and in both services (I always go to both services), seven people stood to their feet! Praise God! The pastors were able to connect personally with each person following the services and have confirmed that at least two of those were rededications. The rest, it seems, are brand new followers of Jesus Christ! Again, praise God!

The Lord is at work at Harvest and you can sense that each Sunday as we arrive to worship. There is an anticipation and eagerness to be together and to see what God will do next. There are so many new faces each week and even some who have heard about Harvest through our new radio ministry, Time to Change.

The last thing we heard on Sunday was an encouragement to use the invitations to get our friends and family to the Christmas worship event happening Friday, December 23 and Saturday, December 24. With all that has been happening lately, I’m pretty sure these are going to be two amazing nights of worship.

I’ll watch for you next Sunday! Hope your week is filled with better things!

I remember a while ago, Todd just mentioned burgers in a message and lots of people went out after the service to get one.  If that is the power of suggestion I can’t imagine how many went out for prime rib yesterday!  Mark Rotolo presented a tantalizing aroma all through the services.  He has a great servant’s heart and lots of skill!  He made a dinner for one of the small groups a while ago.  If you need an excuse to join a small group … well, just saying!

In Hebrews 5, the author is making the point that many believers who should be able to handle more advanced teaching from the Word ("eating meat") were instead satisfied to continue on with only the very basics of the faith ("drinking milk").  We don't want to be looking for milk, but rather we want to be eager to dig in to the meat of the Word.  Although some people try to avoid being used as sermon illustrations, I'm guessing that Dale Chapman and Chris Harrison weren't complaining at all about being the diners in yesterday's illustration!

I hope none of us misses the point of the illustration.  God wants us to dig into his Word and really feed on it.  In 1 John 2:14 he says, “I write unto you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.”  What a great picture of what God’s Word brings; strength and victory.  I want more of that so I’m looking forward to the next few blogs where Pastor Todd promised some practical help.

In the meantime I’m going to review that new song Jordan and Miranda taught us.  Wow!  You can listen to it below and if you missed the message you can get it, sans aroma, right here.

I came across this e-devotional that I thought you might find helpful.  Without prayer nothing else matters, so Daniel Henderson reminds us to be “careful, prayerful, thoughtful and peaceful" in this devotional which you can read here

Speaking of prayer we all need to continue to pray for God’s direction about a Clearview campus.  Mark your calendar to join in praying next Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Tim and Roxie Shaw’s.  It’s open to everyone and it isn’t so much pausing in our busy schedules to make time for this as it is intentionally getting together to do some work in the kingdom.  for more info.

During the announcements, Mike told us about what a great job Harvest did in supporting the gift baskets for the orphanages in Haiti and Nigeria.  All of the kids will get Christmas baskets and there's money left over to go toward other important projects in those countries.

And Mike was also talking about the Christmas Eve services that we're all looking forward to on December 23 and 24 (both at 7 p.m.).  Invitations are available so make sure you pick up a handful next Sunday to use to invite others to join us for these great worship services.  You can also point people to this page of the website for all the info.

Going to get some prime rib!  #hungry #Jesussatisfies

Peace,

Eutychus

Though we struggled with some technical issues this Sunday there was no doubt that God did not struggle to reveal himself to us once again.  Hebrews 5:1-10 was a massive encouragement.  It's amazing how being told that we are beset with weakness can actually be encouraging.  The Word pulls no punches in telling us that we're basically the worst - there's absolutely nothing good about us - yet we have no reason to despair because Jesus Christ has been exalted as the great high priest and is the source of all our strength.  Leaning on him in the heat of our poverty and weakness is where the greatest hope and encouragement come.

Pastor Roger announced that we'll be having two Christmas Eve services this year - December 23 and 24, both at 7 p.m. but no Sunday service that weekend.  On Sunday, December 25, we'll be giving our staff and leaders a chance, after a busy week, to spend some time with their families.  We hope you'll be blessed as you do the same.

Don't forget that the "If They Were Mine" Christmas Campaign booth will be by the big Christmas tree in the lobby for one more Sunday.  Your donations will go to support children at four orphanages - three in Haiti and one in Nigeria.  Dig deep and give as we support and bless children in need.

Have a great week.

10 years, Disney and Swords, Oh My!

Celebrating 10 years of Harvest in Canada, round two, check. Yesterday concluded our second celebration Sunday -  why not celebrate 10 years five times? I know I’m pumped for more!

Pastor Joel Anderson from Harvest Bible Chapel in Orlando brought the word. A great message out of Revelation. A “CHARGE” and an encouragement! I’ve never heard a bugle here at Harvest until now, but I’m pretty sure that we need to work that in for next week. Can someone talk to Jordan about that? Anyone play the bugle?

Speaking of Jordan, the band introduced a new song to us yesterday. A song entitled “Joyful”, a song based on the old hymn with a new chorus about our saving God. Check it out below! Sounds like a keeper.

Worship was great overall yesterday, I love how the celebration Sundays are including these Storyline videos, Sheena Jorgenson really laid it all out for us yesterday. I totally respect that vulnerability and it’s awesome to see the lives that our God can change. When our hearts our softened to his Word he really can transform us! If you missed the video yesterday, definitely check it out below!

Back to Joel now. He’s been hassled so much that he’s from warm, sunny Orlando, and Todd certainly gave it to him during the announcement bit! Joel came with his guns fully loaded though (or maybe just his bags packed?) and brought Todd and Cheryl up for a little “Orlando makeover”. Second service was probably a little less shocking I’m sure!  If you missed the great challenge we received from Joel's message, be sure to listen to it online.

If you saw the sword Joel brought, you might chuckle a bit when you hear he forgot to take it out of his carryon on the flight home! Hope TSA was ok with everything! (#churchprops)

Hopefully you were able to stop by the kiosk in the lobby where the young adults were hosting a display for "If They Were Mine". This Christmas we're joining up with CHIPROM in Nigeria and Freedom House in Haiti to provide Christmas gifts for children in these orphanages.  Our Harvest Young Adults are leading the charge so you can stop by to see them at the booth in the lobby for the next two Sundays and donate some money to bless children this Christmas.  All your donations will be used to purchase gifts and take care of practical needs for those less fortunate. Rally around this campaign and show the love of Christ!

A great Sunday again indeed! So grateful that we're getting used to saying that…praise the Lord for what he’s doing in our church body!

OK, Sunday was all around pretty great.  But I’m kinda getting accustomed to saying that each Monday as I reflect back on our time together.

First, Pastor Mike is simply something else…at the 9 a.m. service, during the child dedication, welcoming Dale Chapman’s moustache to the stage. Just happy that this time he didn’t pull a Lion King and hold any babies aloft. Anyway, Mike did have the joy of dedicating four children to the Lord. Dale and Josee Chapman brought their twins, Averie and Kaela. Ben and Rachel Fyvie brought Emily, and Steve and Annie Harvey brought Lily to be dedicated.  What a blessing!

I noticed a couple of young guys in the worship team. Pretty sure they help anchor the youth teams on Tuesdays. Luke Dugard was up there playing keys for just the second time and Michael Scott was ripping it up on electric guitar for the first time. Love that Michael observed how great it was to see worship from that perspective…watching the church worship. So cool.  Love these young guys and their heart for the Lord.

At the end of the service, Pastor Todd reminded us that Pastor Joel Anderson, with his wife Jill, from Harvest Bible Chapel Orlando will be here next Sunday preaching in our second of five celebration weekends. Todd and Joel have been good friends since 2001 when they both planted churches. I’ve heard that Joel is bringing a message from the Book of Revelation that I’m certain will hit the mark. The lobby is abuzz these days. The worship is passionate. The Word is coming at us in power in this series in Hebrews. It is an exciting place to be each week, and I’m glad I’m here to take it all in and enjoy God’s presence. (If you missed it yesterday, you can listen to Pastor Todd's message online.)

As Sunday closed, I saw one of our leaders praying with a young woman who is new to Harvest. She was praying to turn her life over to Jesus Christ! She had been invited to Harvest by someone else who recently became a Christ-follower and was baptized. God is at work in the hearts of many.

Can’t wait for next Sunday!

Sometimes I don’t know where to begin!  I guess the word that sums it all up is “exposed.”  Pastor Todd reminded us during the announcements that if a cell phone goes off, God would know whose it was, and probably everyone else would too!  There is no use trying to pretend!  It’s a good thing I use my Bible app because I can make sure it’s off.

I didn’t really hear about anyone getting caught with the time change.  But I still got a jolt when I saw the time on my car’s clock!

Things got pretty serious though, as we were reminded that we ought to give an accounting for the freedoms we have.   If I can swing it I want to join the staff down at the Cenotaph to honour our soldiers on Friday morning.

The message was a powerful reminder to be diligent now for the accounting we will give.  I loved this summary statement:  “Go ahead and live the life you want to give an account for.”  That makes it clear that I am responsible for my choices in areas like money, time and abilities.  God misses nothing and his Word speaks directly into my life about these things.  I am so thankful to be part of a body where so many are responsive to these things, and willing to publicly submit to the scrutiny of God’s Word.  What were some of the things God was speaking to you about?  This song, below, that Amy sang during that time is still moving me!  How great is it that when my sin is exposed, God “clothes me in robes of righteousness,” and “covers my nakedness with grace”?

It was a great time affirming Mike Armstrong as a pastor.  Harvest is blessed to have him as part of our leadership team and blessed to have his wife Angie pouring into the lives of so many at Harvest.  They are proven and faithful and I love it when Mike “brings the Word!”

I was moved, again, praying the Scriptures together in our evening prayer meeting.  We prayed through the values that define who we are as Harvest Bible Chapel.  There was rejoicing and tears and supplications and lots of gratitude.

And while we were busy with all of this, it’s also good to know that our new radio program, Time to Change, featuring Canadian Harvest Bible Fellowship teaching pastors, launched on Sunday at 11 a.m. on Life 100.3.

Have a great week remembering the one who set the standard for loving sacrifice!

What a weekend at Harvest - on Friday night we had an incredible youth event called Shine the Light happen down at HBC Oakville.  Nearly 400 students gathered together for an outreach event where the gospel was preached with urgency and boldness and I'm pleased to pass on to you the report that two students from Barrie professed Christ - be praying for them this week as they begin their journey with the Lord.

Sunday was also lights out - Todd brought it from Hebrews 4:1-10 in a message that was all about the rest we have through Jesus Christ.  For many of us it definitely served as a heavy reminder of those we know who are striving so hard to find peace and fulfillment in the things of this world.  Let's remember to pray for our loved ones who need salvation and also lift up those carrying the burden of friends and family who need the hope Christ provides.

Since we're on the theme of prayer, let's keep that train rolling, shall we?  We have a night of prayer coming up next Sunday, November 6 at TCS starting up at 6:30 p.m.  Bring someone out who hasn't attended before as we bathe this ministry in prayer.

And if you or someone you know lives in Clearview Township don't forget about our campus open houses that we're having this Wednesday and Thursday night. All the info you need is available at harvestbarrie.ca/clearview

BTW, if you missed Sunday, our website provides the audio message and the bulletin and if you were there you might want to check out the song that closed out the message, "Soon".

A great Sunday at Harvest this weekend, powerful worship, awesome baptisms, Todd pushed through the message despite being so sick, and Jordan wore shoes yet again this weekend! We witnessed nine baptisms between both of our services; hearing stories that were so evident of the Lord’s work in peoples lives. So refreshing to hear, I think we should do baptisms weekly!

Stories of lives that were transformed from the inside out, letting the Lord really do a work in their hearts. I was so encouraged to hear that there are people in our church reaching out to the lost, really pushing them to come with them to church and guiding them through the transforming power of the Lord. How many of those people said they were witnessed to by a small group leader or another person in the congregation? So great to see the body of Christ walking through life together!

After hearing how the Lord changed people’s lives we were then challenged from Todd to examine our own hearts. To see how we can keep ourselves from having our hearts hardened to the Lord. If you missed it or want to listen again, as always, it's available online.  We were introduced to an awesome new song called “Search My Heart” which really captured what our prayer need’s to be! Check that one out for sure.

We were also introduced to our new elder candidate, Clement Bamikole.  You can find Clement's story in Sunday's bulletin.  (By the way, did you know you can have the bulletin emailed to you every Friday?)

And as you go through this week, remember to not ignore what God is doing in your heart. PAY ATTENTION to that, it’s so easy to forget in the business of life. Encourage one another as we saw in the lives of those baptized, reach out to the lost and don’t let them ignore who our great God is!

Another phenomenal time of worship and the Word on Sunday at Harvest Barrie!  If you missed Sunday, you can listen to Pastor Todd's message in Hebrews 3:1-6 online.  Among other things, we were challenged about the public profession of our faith--"our confession", as the preacher in Hebrews puts it.

A couple of quick applications to that: we're doing baptisms next Sunday, October 23 and if you want/need in on that, this week (705-739-8613).  This is the biblically prescribed way of confessing that Jesus is Lord of our lives.

And second, watch for opportunities to confess and acknowledge Christ this week among people you work with and see during the week who don't follow Christ yet.  There's no doubt God is going to open up some doors for us after a message like that. I wouldn't want any of us to deny Christ this week!

Apart from what we heard in the message, just before he started preaching Todd said it was a big day for the pastoral team. It had been Roger's birthday on Saturday, Mike was off preaching at Harvest Durham, and Jordan was wearing shoes for the first time since joining us here at Harvest Barrie in June. I noticed that he was even wearing socks. Last time he did that it was his wedding day!

And finally, I did slip into the back of the Builder's Meeting on Sunday evening. Among the reports, updates and announcements made at the meeting, the elder board chair, Terry Codling announced Clement Bamikole as our new elder candidate.  That was met with an enthusiastic response from the Builders. His bio will appear in the blog later this week and in the weekend bulletin.  So watch for that.

The finances are still recovering from some tough years and some short term pain in getting the new office up and running. So we're operating with no reserve right now and that makes things a little tight. Everyone must remain faithful in their giving if we're going to continue to move forward in fulfilling what God has for us to do.

One final reminder, if you haven't jumped into the memory project, now is a good time.  We're working on Hebrews 3:12-14 now. You can receive text reminders of the current verses each Tuesday by signing up on the memory page.

I'm outta here. Have super week!

Well, after checking out all the Beatles songs, I have decided that their declaration; “Help, I need somebody …” is about the only thing they have right!  So glad we are getting our truth from the Word and not our drifting culture!

Anyway, I got thinking during the message about the help we need.  (Listen to it here.)  Hebrews 2:9 says Jesus tasted death for everyone and I wondered “why?”  I remembered, (along with Heb. 1:3 and 2:1-3a), 2 Corinthians 5:14, “… because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died.”  He died for all of us because we are all dead and need the life only Jesus gives.  That song we sing, “You Alone Can Rescue” is a powerful declaration of that truth!  I’m really glad for the family members who came for Thanksgiving and am praying some of them will be thinking about whether they will trust Christ completely.

While I’m glad I’ve got my salvation nailed down, Pastor Todd hit me between the eyes with the reality that I can be like a dog.  (I looked at my “best friend” differently when I got home!)  Here are the four lies he said Satan whispers to us so we will excuse our sin:
1.     Just one more time and then I’ll be done.  (1John 2:6, 2:15, 3:6, 3:8)
2.     That’s just the way I am, I can’t change, or I have changed enough. (2 Corinthians 3:17)
3.     I can sin because God will forgive me and give more grace. (Romans 5:20. 6:1)
4.     If I confess to people, they won’t understand and will heap guilt and shame on me.  (John 8: 1-11)

Finally, if I am the church, do I deal in fear, guilt and shame or unconditional love and acceptance?   I know it’s hard for me, myself, to deal with God’s plan of suffering through temptation and depending on Jesus to get through.  I heard in small group that “we can do better together” but Pastor Todd said transparency and vulnerability is risky.  I’m trying to figure out how that balances out in real time and my role in it.  What about you?

If you are reading this it must mean you avoided the “turkey syndrome” or have already slept it off.   I’m thankful for all we have here in Canada, including those Americans among us, in spite of the fact Macleans magazine says they are now claiming we didn’t thrash them in 1812!  Great time together at today's Turkey Bowl.  To quote a Twitter update, "Marrieds demoed the singles".

Peace,

MonMondayOctOctober3rd2011 The Monday blog about Sunday So if you missed out on life at Harvest Barrie this weekend, don't worry, nothing cool happened.  Oh, wait...

There were in fact many cool things that happened this weekend.  On Saturday morning we held our Fall Training Day where ministry leaders provided training for basically every position in the church.  Be sure to check out the pictures and get yourself serving in one of our ministries so you don't miss it next year.

On Sunday we celebrated 10 years of Harvest Bible Chapel in Canada with the first of five celebration weekends that we're doing throughout the next year.  We were hugely blessed to have Ron Zappia bring the word this morning - he's the senior pastor of Harvest Naperville in the Chicago area and the first church plant pastor, launching about a year before Todd launched HBC Barrie.  In the same way that Ron's dad would have him shine his shoes as a kid, Ron polished the gospel up for us - he helped us take it off the shelf and dust it off so we could experience it more fully, be filled with its knowledge and be unleashed to proclaim it.  It all came from Paul's prayer in Colossians 1:9-14 and if you missed it you will drop everything you're doing and listen to it right now.  Let it encourage and fire you up this week.

We also showed the first video in a series we're calling Storylines.  We're showing one, each of the celebration weekends and they highlight stories of hope in Jesus Christ from people in our church.  Yesterday we were introduced to Tyler and Amber Steingard and their powerful story of holding firm to the Lord in the middle of a very personal and deep trial.

If you did happen to miss everything this weekend, don't you dare fret. We have four more of these weekends coming up in the near future - stay tuned.

Another fine Sunday at Harvest Barrie this weekend, it's always entertaining to walk in and see a different stage set up. It keeps us guessing I suppose... I just hope that those white panels don't make it in front of the band at any point. It be a bit awkward to look at a bunch of shadows of people during worship. Time will tell!

A great sermon yesterday from Pastor Todd also. “Lest We Drift” was the title. It challenged us, asking the question of whether or not we are in tune to what the Lord has for us or are letting ourselves drift away from him and his plan for our lives. He gave us five practical points on how to make sure that we aren’t drifting away.

1. Intentionally listen to God’s Word.
This seems so simple, yet it can be such a struggle for all of us. It’s hard to hear what the Lord has for us in his Word if we aren’t actually in his Word… Let’s certainly keep on top of that.

2.  Implicitly trust what it says to me.
Once we get to the point where we are in the Word, listening to what it has for our lives, another challenge is trusting that what the Word says is true. So often we seek answers that we want, not the one’s that we need to hear…TRUST the Word of the Lord.

3.  Completely lose my self-righteous attitude.
“self-right-eous” adjective – confident of one’s own righteousness, especially when smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behaviours of others. When we define it, sometimes we develop a greater distaste for it…sounds bad doesn’t it?

4.  Soberly heed the warning leveled at me.
Trust what the Word says! Every transgression/disobedience will receive just retribution. There is no escape from it! You have been warned!

5.  And, easily see God at work in my life.
When we abide by what God’s Word has for us, we see fruit in our lives. Maybe it’s the way we act at work, or at home with our spouses or kids, maybe an in-law that we aren’t so fond of.

When we trust what his Word has for us and abide by it, we can see God@Work in our lives. Let’s set this as our aim this week, friends. Trust in him and what his Word has for us.

U R LOVED.

What a great Sunday! Loving the new stage set up and the energy I’m sensing in worship each week. And our study in Hebrews is already hitting the mark in my own life…helping me get vertical with my God.

We’ve been hearing about The Valley of Vision off and on for a bit now. Pastor Todd talked about it several weeks ago and he tweets a few excerpts several mornings a week for those who follow him on Twitter or Facebook. As we quietly prepared for worship on Sunday, Jordan read an entire prayer from this powerful collection of Puritan prayers and devotionals. For those who are into e-books, you can get the Kindle version of The Valley of Vision from Amazon for $0.99.

Pastor Todd took us through Hebrews 1:4-11 where we heard that nothing (not even angels) should stand in the way of our worship of Jesus Christ. Like a lot of you, I wrote down something at the end of the teaching time that I’m eager to get rid of in my life because I know it keeps me from worship at times.

The message helped us see that Jesus is much superior to angels—as cool as they are to us. We went through that “job description” for angels pretty quickly, so if you are one of those people who might want to study that part again this week, here’s the list he worked through:

The unnamed angels who appear most often in Scripture carry out a variety of tasks—all designed to serve God…

  • Worship and praise - This is the main activity portrayed in heaven (Isaiah 6:1-3; Revelation 4-5).
  • Revealing - They serve as messengers to communicate God's will to men. They helped reveal the law to Moses (Acts 7:52-53), and served as the carriers of much of the material in Daniel, and Revelation.
  • Guiding - Angels gave instructions to Joseph about the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1-2), to the women at the tomb, to Philip (Acts 8:26), and to Cornelius (Acts 10:1-8).
  • Providing - God has used angels to provide physical needs such as food for Hagar (Genesis 21:17-20), Elijah (1 Kings 19:6), and Christ after his temptation (Matthew 4:11).
  • Protecting - Keeping God's people out of physical danger, as in the cases of Daniel and the lions, and his three friends in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3 and 6).
  • Delivering - Getting God's people out of danger once they're in it. Angels released the apostles from prison  in Acts 5, and repeated the process for Peter in Acts 12.
  • Strengthening and encouraging - Angels strengthened Jesus after his temptation (Matt 4:11), encouraged the apostles to keep preaching after releasing them from prison (Acts 5:19-20), and told Paul that everyone on his ship would survive the impending shipwreck (Acts 27:23-25).
  • Answering prayer - God often uses angels as his means of answering the prayers of his people (Daniel 9:20-24; 10:10-12; Acts 12:1-17).
  • Caring for believers at the moment of death - In the story of Lazarus and the rich man, we read that angels carried the spirit of Lazarus to "Abraham's bosom" when he died (Luke 16:22).

Prepared by Dr. John Bechtle

And if you want to dive head first into “angelology” (yup, that’s a real field of study), you should check out Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. After the service, one couple told me they were pulling out their copy of that book to go deeper into what angels are all about.

Pastor Mike prayed with thanks for the tenth anniversary of Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie…actually the tenth anniversary of Harvest in Canada since we were the first one planted outside of the Chicagoland area. Pastor Todd mentioned at the end that this past Sunday marked the official launch of the church back in 2001. He also let us know that while this past Sunday was pretty low key about that, celebration Sundays are coming up in October, November, February, April and June with some great preachers coming in to help us give glory to God for all he has done.

Some reminders that have been passed on to me to pass on to you while I’m writing…

-       Don’t forget the Memory Project (Get it? Fon’t forget the memory project!). Sign up to receive a weekly reminder by text to your cellphone. We’re still working on Hebrews 1:3 this week;

-       Last Sunday, September 11, Pastor Todd and Pastor Roger took about eight minutes to talk about our new ministry year launch and a bunch of things related to it. You can listen to that short update below.

-       If you’re in a small group already, you’ll be starting the book, Transforming Prayer this week. Everyone is pretty pumped about what this will mean for our church as we live out the pillar, believing firmly in the power of prayer;

-       And finally, (this was a long one!), we have a night of prayer coming up this Sunday, September 25. Our Clearview campus prayer group will be joining the rest of us at Timothy at 6:30 p.m. to begin practicing the things we will be learning in Transforming Prayer.

That’s it for me for now. Hope you have an amazing week!

Jesus is everything he says he is!  That new song Jordan led us in has been sticking in my head.  It is colouring everything I think this week.  You can listen to it again below if you need a refresher to get it exactly.  All the new things going on around here are pretty exciting but the one thing that stands out to me every week is God’s presence.

This book of Hebrews is right down my alley if you know what I mean.  It is all about the supremacy of Jesus Christ.   I can endure because of his indestructible life!  We are going to learn so much by listening to God.  We sure need to do that because there is so much turmoil in this world, both on an international scale and on an individual scale.  I so appreciated Todd’s prayer about 9/11.  Ten years' perspective just underlines how we need all of Jesus!  I’m in for getting the whole message of Jesus.  You can hear Sunday’s start on it on the website.

The new things are sure targeted toward that.  Our small group study of Transforming Prayer will be a great start in seeking God’s face.  I can’t wait to party with my small group this week and then start the study next week.  It will be cool to see new people there for the study.  I picked up my workbook at the bookstore for $5!  Some new small groups are starting too.  I’ll be praying for them.  If you're not in a group, find your spot on the website.

The memory project will help too.  Can Pastor Roger get excited about God’s Word or what?  I signed up for the text reminders.  You can too, right here.  I have started memorizing and it really does stick because I keep thinking about these words:  “After making purification for sins, he sat down.”  Jesus made purification for my sins.  He did it all.  I am so glad I get to worship him with everyone here.  And I’m thankful for those becoming members like I have.  If you are saved and baptized and want to become a member the next Membership@Harvest class is this Sunday at 9 a.m. and for the next two weeks following.

This week I will be reflecting on Jesus, waiting for our small group study on prayer, memorizing scripture and looking  forward to the men’s breakfast this Saturday, at 8 a.m. at Timothy Christian School.  As always, all the information is on the web site at www.harvestbarrie.ca.

 Peace,

It was cool to have Pastor Todd back in the house this Sunday - there's no doubt that the message from Psalm 126 was a challenge but also a real encouragement too.  The sober truth we all need to recognize is that our lives will be marked with tears.  In a sin-sickened world, that's the reality.  But the awesome thing for believers is that we have the ability to experience joy in the midst of all that.  Not just happiness, but real joy.  It's kind of a crazy thing to realize that unbelievers don't have the ability to experience joy.  There can be such confusion around the difference between happiness and joy but Todd showed us some characteristics of each that help bring clarity:

3 Characteristics of Happiness
-Temporary
-Rooted in circumstances
-An emotion

3 Characteristics of Joy
-Eternal
-Rooted in a relationship with Christ
-It's a spiritual state of being

We also sang a great song called 'Glorious'.

And a lot of people have been enjoying the new Matt Redman album 10,000 Reasons.  We're going to be introducing 'Holy' off that album next week on launch Sunday so it would be a great idea to pick up this album and get familiar with it.

Don't forget to be there next Sunday as we kick off our year - bring friends, family and perfect strangers off the street if you need to - we want as many people as possible to be exposed to the glory of God as we start off a new ministry year.

See you then!

Another fine Sunday at Harvest Barrie, showing us that we may all need to come warmed up for worship. We arrived to a new stage set-up with an empty set of choir risers up there. I was wondering during the first song when the choir was going to appear. But after the first song Jordan made it clear that there was no planned choir. He wanted to give the congregants the opportunity to come up and lift up the name of the Lord (that’s a pillar of ours).

Jordan said he refused to continue the set until the risers were full. It always takes the first person to get it going. After Chad Ballantyne started it up, the first service choir got going and the risers were packed! Second service hardly needed any prompting and in minutes their choir was ready to go.  It was an amazing time of worship and so neat to see some “regular” worshipers up on stage. Such a blessing to have some variety within our Sunday services, and also showing us that we don’t have to be a trained singer to help lead people to worship our Lord. He can use the best and the worst, it was truly an awesome time of worship!

After that it left us fired up to hear from God’s Word. Pastor Roger brought it yet again. (If you missed it, you can listen here.)  A little less shouting than last week, but certainly brought with the same intensity! He preached out of one verse, Romans 15:14, which is a feat in itself! Finishing up his mini-series on biblical soul-care, this Sunday was focused on being an advocate.  He gave us a little challenge/test, “Levels of spiritual maturity”, and these were the levels from that section:

Spiritual Child - wants others to feed them, doesn’t read God’s Word on their own and doesn’t feel convicted about sin.
Adolescent - feeds themselves, prays but is inconsistent, struggles with balance.
Adult - studies the Word, feeds off it, isn’t lazy, feeds others in their lives, prayer is not only consistent but desired, committed to God’s people.

I’m sure that all of us would strive to be an adult; I know I certainly do but often fail in these little areas. I am committed but sometimes it doesn’t feel like enough… anyone else out there like that? I loved the way Roger finished his message saying that Jesus Christ is the perfect advocate - it’s SO true. Being able to hear that and then observe communion after was such a blessing. So let’s make sure to strive to be more and more like him everyday. Looking forward to seeing you all next Sunday!

A tremendous Sunday together, as always.  It was really cool to have the band stripped down and have more of an acoustic set so we could really focus on the words - be sure to check out "Awesome is the Lord Most High".

Pastor Roger really nailed it in his message from Philemon today on what Biblical Soul Care looks like.  It really takes effect when we are authentic, vulnerable and transparent with each other - it goes both ways.  We all love the idea of being better equipped to help and reach out to others but it also comes down to being open to others helping us.  If you missed it, you can listen online.

This is the start of a new chapter at Harvest as this is going to be the method by which we care for, disciple and mentor each other as a body. We are expecting great fruitfulness in Christ through this and if you'd like to receive the Soul Care training, please contact the and get registered for one of the classes we are running this fall.

It was also great to see Steve Dobbs, Dawn Woodland and Chad Ballantyne honoured for how they led us in worship so well for over a year before Jordan came on.   God has been so good to our church and we're thankful to him for how he continues to move in power and strength in us.

Wow!  Jon and Adrienne haven’t changed much but those boys sure are growing!  It was so exciting to hear their family update.  I’m not sure how Jordan felt when Jon shared about being his Grade 9 leader.  Jon should probably feel old now that Jordan’s leading worship for us!

For an old guy, he sure brought a good word!  If we are going to see the things we long for as a church and in our own lives we must stay connected!  I need to think about what that means for me.  It’s so easy to fall into thinking I’m getting the job done by what I do.  There are some tensions in living for God that I keep bumping into.  It’s pretty clear, though, that anything good coming up around here is because God’s doing it!  That’s especially true in the changes I’ve seen in me and in some other people around here.

I am really pumped up about Jon’s challenge to ramp up prayer.  It seems to be one of the clearest indications that we are going vertical.  It will be so cool when my small group does the study on prayer in September.   I have to find my copy of Daniel Henderson’s book, “Transforming Prayer – How Everything Changes When You Seek God’s Face.”  I want to read ahead! Actually, I want to get a head start on praying and getting a plan to keep it going.  I guess I should just start – by praying.

That reminds me, I should check out the details of the prayer meeting next Sunday for the Clearview campus.  They said it was in the bulletin or online.  That would be a good plan – plan now to be there then!

Well, speaking of old guys bringing the Word, Pastor Roger is bringing it down for the next two weeks.  Word has it he’s letting us in on Biblical Soul Care.  I’ll be watching the blog for the previews.  Till then, “Stay Connected and Stay Low!”

Peace,

Eutychus

It's always exciting to have a guest preacher in the house, especially when that guest preacher is from another Harvest! So encouraging to me to know that there are other Harvests out there. Both near and far, bringing the same intensity preaching the Word and lifting up the name of the Lord in worship EVERY weekend. Let's certainly make sure we are lifting them up in prayer weekly.

Pastor Norm Millar, of Harvest London, gave a great word this weekend (glad the building stayed cool for him) reminding us again that we need to put our full faith in Jesus Christ. When we are weak he is strong, and we certainly saw that in the life of Gideon over and over!  If you missed Sunday or want to listen to the message again, it's online here.

The song that Jordan and the band introduced was so suiting for the message as well, the chorus and bridge stated:

Chorus:
Give me faith, to trust what you say
That your good, and your love is great
I'm broken inside, I give you my life

Bridge:
I may be weak, but your spirit's strong in me.
My flesh may fail, but my God you never will.

The verses of the song were a reminder of our need for the Lord, and our need to be broken and ready for what he has for us and the plans in our lives. Check out the song below! We need to be sure that this is on our minds and that we don't make God the “X Factor”... What a great reminder that we need to find our strength in him, where every good and perfect thing flows from.

It was also exciting and encouraging to hear that another pastor from Harvest London is going to be doing some street evangelism up in the Barrie area! I hope to see you all out there as we share the love of Christ with those who don't know him. It's our job to go out and make disciples, so I encourage you to do so if you have the time! Check out the Extreme Team Mission info for August 12-13 here. For more info, contact them here.

On that note, make sure you're also praying for Julie Tyne as she heads out to Siera Leon with Mercy Ships for about three months to bring the Word there.  We gathered to pray for her after the services.  And don't forget to pray for Pastor Todd and Cheryl as they finish up their time in Scotland and begin their long trek home, then down to Lynchburg, to take their eldest son, Joel, back to Liberty University!

Well it was wonderful to have the air conditioning back!  Quite a shock to the system when I dressed for semi-arid desert extremes again!  Jordan said it was a beautiful day when the worship team arrived but they were later surprised by the fast moving rain storm that caused a couple of power interruptions just before first service.  It pays to come really early because I was on time for first and still got wet!  I’m not sure second service attendees even knew it rained!

I was pumped to hear the report from our youth team.  So cool that we love the gospel and celebrated when Emilie told about the girl who responded and accepted Christ.  I love that about this church!  Isn’t what Josh described as “blessing going both ways” exactly what happens to us?

Mike’s message (listen here) about how I still need the gospel to change me was set up perfectly by celebrating communion together.  It reminded me of this quote by Jeff Temple in a devotional about parenting:

“My boys know the gospel, but don’t yet comprehend the importance of living it out daily.  The gospel is more of a concept to them, the big picture of salvation as a ticket to Heaven, but it has not become a daily reality to them as sinners guilty of treason before God in continual need of grace, forgiveness and redemptive sanctification.”

It certainly is easy to fall into that trap.  I need the gospel today!  I’m looking forward to sharing in small group about how God’s grace showed in my life this week.  I’m glad this is a place people don’t have to pretend that we’re all perfect.

There are lots of people who need the gospel and one way we are taking it to them is through the possibility of putting a campus close to them.  Another prayer meeting about the Clearview Township campus happened last night.  Heard it was a sweet time of calling on God together and I hear there is another one next Sunday night.

As Mike reminded us: “Pray for Pastor Todd preaching in Scotland.”  It’s a practical way to be a partner.  And don’t miss this coming Sunday with Pastor Norm Millar from Harvest London!

Peace,

Nothing like a "mildly warm" day to get together for church yesterday.

It was amazing to hear from Jordan Coros about how great the turnout was for our Food Drive Flash Mob for the Barrie Food Bank on Saturday.  Many of you showed up and three truckloads of food were gathered - the Food Bank was so pumped to be blessed by this and the number we're hearing is that the total weight of the food collected was 3000 lbs - glory to God!  Missed out?  Bring your non-perishable food items to church this Sunday.

Mike's message from Galatians 1:1-9 was all about how nothing compares to the Gospel - it has the power to dislodge idols and completely transform the way we think, act and interact with our world.  We all need to deeply grasp that our salvation, our hope, our wholeness as people rest in the Gospel - no other truth is more important for us to grasp.

Mike mentioned "The Cross-Centered Life: Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing" by C.J. Mahaney.  You may want to check it out for some summer reading.

Forever Reign is one of the songs Jordan Donald and the team led us in - it's a message of the Gospel of grace - check it out.

Keep in mind the prayer meetings for the Collingwood/Wasaga Beach campus.  The next two are scheduled for Sunday, July 31 and Sunday, August 7.  Info here.

It was also cool to see John Coros and Ken Rounds affirmed as deacons - how great is it that both these men got saved at our church and have served faithfully for years?!  That's the gospel at work.

God is good.

It was another powerful Sunday as we wrapped up our time in Esther yesterday.  It was cool to see so many standing in response to the Word as we considered each of those failures we face.  If you haven't heard the message because you were away, check it out here.  Each of the messages in the three week series are available here.

Pastor Todd let us know that the whole "Not Going Back" series in Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther will close on Labour Day weekend with a message on Psalm 126--the hymn that the returning exiles sang about God's restoration.

The reason we're waiting awhile for that final message is because Pastor Todd is taking his annual preaching break for the next six weeks.  No new sermon prep for him for a bit.  He'll be heading off with Cheryl to Scotland for some vacation and to preach at Harvest Bible Chapel Glasgow. If you missed it, check out last week's blog from Pastor Scott Hamilton, senior pastor at Harvest Glasgow.

Back here in Barrie we'll be sitting under the teaching ministry of Mike Armstrong on July 24 and 31, Norm Millar on August 7, Jon Miller on August 14, and Roger Freeman on August 21 and 28.  It is a great line up and we'll be hearing some great preaching.

Having mentioned Mike, it was so good to see his name in the bulletin to affirm him as a pastor. He has served so well as both the student ministries director and now as family ministries director.  If all goes well, the elders will lay hands on him in an upcoming service. Sometimes when you "lay hands on" someone it is a bad thing, but this is a very good thing.

Back to the sermon for a sec...Pastor Todd mentioned the book, The Hiding Place. It is the story of Corrie Ten Boom and her family hiding Jews during World War II. It is a powerful story of forgiveness.  Great summer reading if you're looking for things for your reading list.

Word is that the Harvest office is on the move again.  I heard about an email from one staff team member who wrote, "Well, it is that time of year again when we pack up all our things and move the office." Punchy! This time is should be semi-permanent as the team moves into the space at 258 Bayfield Street.  Watch for news about the actual move date.

And one final note, the Flash Mob Food Drive is happening this Saturday. Don't miss this fun event. Here are the details from the main page of our website. We intentionally landed on a July drive to bless the food bank at a time that no one else is thinking about them. Let's fill those trucks, Harvest, and show our love.

Wait, one more final note.  Was anyone else hot in there on Sunday? The temps, according to the guy I met with the six thermometers placed strategically around the building were 78 to 82 F. Pretty warm.  The staff is working with our landlords at TCS to find a solution.  Thanks for your patience as we work it out. Have a great week! Stay cool.

Grace,

It was another great time of worship and of being the church this past Sunday as we continued our look into the Book of Esther. Pastor Todd took us to the Word to examine the lives of Mordecai and Esther, and he challenged us about how we normally look at these supposed “heroes” of the story. If you missed it, check out the message audio.

The worship time included a time of open mic sharing of favourite verses on God’s faithfulness. It was powerful to hear so many voices lifting up the Word of God. To those who shared, thanks for doing that.

It was also amazing to have Amber sing and Jordan, Travis and Victor accompany her for that high impact song, Your Hands, which we heard during the message. Here’s the original artist JJ Heller singing it. If the song impacted you, you can buy it for $0.99 on iTunes. Worth it!

It was good to see Travis Doucette on team playing keys too. Travis is a member here at Harvest but we only really see him around Christmas and in the summer. He lives in Lynchburg, Virginia, is a member at Thomas Road Baptist Church there and works as a prof in the worship faculty at Liberty University. Always a blessing to have him with us.

At the end of the worship service we prayed for our youth mission team which is now in Bradford for the week running a Vacation Bible School there in partnership with CrossTrainers Ministries. We’re grateful for our partnership with this ministry and with Harvest members Josh and April Schrader who are part of the fulltime team there.

And Sunday night there was a special prayer gathering in Nottawa as the elders and a group of eager Clearview Township people prayed about a Harvest campus in the Collingwood-Wasaga Beach area.  It was so encouraging to see those who came and to think about the possibilities for making disciples and church planting there.

And before I let you go, Harvest Bible Chapel Muskoka commissioned her first elders yesterday. Our elder chair, Terry Codling, was there to lay hands on these men. Pastor Todd was an elder there since the church launched in 2008.

And if you’re looking for a cool thing to do this week, Pastor Ron Zappia, who planted the first Harvest Bible Chapel in 2000 in Naperville, Illinois, is speaking up at Muskoka Bible Centre (MBC). Call them for details on when he is speaking.

Did anyone else notice it was a little warm in the room on Sunday? Those upfront preaching and leading worship sure did. The staff is working with Timothy Christian School (our landlords) to rectify the situation.

Hope that wherever you are, you’re enjoying this gorgeous week of summer.

To him be glory!

Pastor Todd said, “We are not going to go easy on preaching the word in July are we?”  The Word of God never needs a rest and I always need the Word in me.  We cannot afford to take a holiday from God’s Word, so I am excited about making it a priority!

One thought from the message that really gripped me is that “I am not defined by my failures”. How many of us see ourselves in light of our failures instead of faithfully living out our identity in Christ?  I know that is a struggle for me, yet my point of failure is exactly the point where God’s grace touches my life most powerfully.  (If you missed it, listen to the message here.)

I still have to deal with my tendency to over-indulge just like that king dude in Esther.  These questions Todd gave to apply to various areas of my life are pretty significant for testing how I am doing:

1. Do I find myself wanting this thing more and more?
2. Have I become defensive when questioned about it?
3. Do I think life will be boring without it?
4. What have I neglected in order to spend time doing this thing?
5. Do I use this thing to manipulate my feelings?
6. Can I set this aside for a significant period of time?

I asked myself, “What is the one thing I need to test myself in by having a fast from it?”  What do you need to fast from?

One last thing: Todd said that, “We need to confess our sins to one another”.  Who will I call?  Who will you call?

And what do you need to do if someone calls you and confesses?  Here are some suggestions:

1. Don’t panic!  If you are not ready to receive it, politely tell the person.  If you are ready, listen and then pray with the person.
2. Ask them what kind of follow-up they would like.  Do they want ongoing accountability, ie – regular phone calls, or would they like extended help?
3. Ask how you can help them take the next step or even find out what the next step is.
4. Continue to pray for them and set a date to ask them how they are doing.

I sure am glad to know that it is God changing me, otherwise this would be too scary.  I’m not going to let lack of faith or fear hold me back.  Let’s grow together!

And don’t forget to watch for more details on the Food Bank Drive for July 23!

Peace,

Eutychus

Wow, huge Sunday.  First, we celebrated communion.  A great call for us to not let communion become routine.  The forgiveness we received at the cross should never get stale.  We also had baptisms galore - how cool was it to see people step up to the plate spontaneously as they obeyed the command to identify publicly with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  You can listen to some of the testimonies by clicking on the audio file below.  So cool.

Todd's final message in Nehemiah was another great reminder about persevering in our love for God and others.  You might remember the example we heard from Hudson Taylor's life.  He sought to pray as if everything depended on the praying and work as if everything depended on the working.  A great way to live our lives - no holding back, no wasting time - living full out for God at all times.

Todd also mentioned the book, The Valley of Vision and this quote,"O my God, I bid farewell to sin by clinging to his cross, hiding in his wounds, and sheltering in his side."

And if all that didn't make everything huge enough, we also got to welcome Jordan and Roxie Donald to the team - they officially join our staff this week and I know we're all psyched to get to know them and worship with them.  Be sure to connect with them soon and show them how pumped you are to have them aboard.

Can't wait for next Sunday already - see you then.

Nothing says, “Harvests Loves” like ice cream! And not that pre-packaged, out of the box stuff but hand-scooped Baskin-Robbins ice cream! If you missed being with the church on Sunday, you missed a sweet treat!

Pastor Todd preached on celebration from Nehemiah 12:27-47 laying down what biblical, God-honouring celebration should look like. The notes and audio of that message are all here.  At the end of the message, we concluded with a couple of energized worship songs and then…ice cream!

As a church we witnessed the dedication of four baby girls. Word is that we are on a run of baby girl births lately although a baby boy was born just this past week to break a streak that has gone on for months. We rejoiced with the Desota family in the dedication of Alivia, the Armstrongs in the dedication of Karis, the Minnemas with Peyton, and the McAdams with Sophie. Thanking God for each one. A great Father’s Day celebration!

And as part of what we do as a church family on Father’s Day, we blessed each of the single dads in the church with a $50 gift card to Canadian Tire.

The Pregnancy Resource Centre was collecting the baby bottles that they handed out on Mother’s Day. Looked like a nice haul of coin…and cheques…from our Harvest family. This ministry reaches out to girls and guys who are in a tough spot with an unplanned pregnancy. Love this ministry!

All that to say, there were a ton of things going on and the spirit in the place was one of joy and celebration. Our great God blessed us with his presence.

To him be glory!

With all the focus on the vision God is laying on our hearts it sure was good to be reminded of something that is foundational to that.  Thank you Mike for pointing us to God’s steadfast love as the basis for our love for God and each other!  (Listen to the message here.) Everything we do is really a response to what God is and has already done for us.  Thank you for pointing out that I can do that by living out this year’s theme!  I looked over some of the new practical examples of how we are doing that here: www.harvestloves.ca.

The bulletin was stuffed with information too!  Pretty cool that two of our deacon candidates have been saved since Harvest started and are now stepping into these leadership roles.  You might guess who they are.  I’m excited to recognize them because they have already been stepping up!

The elder insert challenged me to pray so I took the nine initiatives off the web page provided here: www.harvestbarrie.ca/vision, and copied them into my prayer journal. I will pray about them and for our elders.  I hope lots of people tear off the bottom of the sheet and hand them in with notes.  This is a great way to share my comments, questions and of course; joys, burdens and concerns.

There were lots of our people on the road yesterday.  Pastor Todd and Cheryl were coming back from his message planning retreat. They also made it to Jordan and Roxie’s wedding.  Some people here are counting sleeps till Jordan is on site.  I am too because I’m into “window-rattling worship”!

There were a bunch of our ladies driving back from a conference in Kentucky.  They sounded somewhat excited about what they learned.  Apparently we’re going to be hearing, “You go girl!” a lot around here.  Excitement is good – and there’s a lot of that in the air! Now it’s time to bring the heat, since summer isn’t.  :-)

Peace and joy,

A Wild Vision Sunday

Well where do I begin about Sunday?!  If any one of the following things happened it would have been a day to remember but there were at least three things that really stood out.

First off, down at Harvest U last month our very own Todd Dugard was chosen by all the Harvest Senior Pastors around the world as the 2011 Harvest Bible Chapel Senior Pastor of the Year - a fun and cool distinction in the spirit of 1 Timothy 5:17 which says, "Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching."  We saw a video from James MacDonald giving a shout out to Todd  and if that wasn't enough, Terry Codling stood up and presented Todd with a new iPad 2 as a gift from our church, thanking him for all his service, endurance and perseverance.  Just when we all thought it was over Terry then presented Todd and Cheryl with the keys to a new car in order to be obedient to the part about showing double honour.  Wow/crazy/cool/emotional/powerful.  The audio of all that is right here.

(This is where you can pause for a second and catch your breath.)

Somehow Todd managed to then pull it together to deliver the message (listen to it here) which was all about the theme verse for next year from Ephesians 3:20-21 which says, "Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Not done yet.

The message then turned to nine initiatives that the elders feel God has laid on their hearts in terms of the direction of Harvest Barrie. These are nine things that our church is committed to seeing happen in our future. You really need to check out our website for a full run down of all nine initiatives including photos and videos highlighting some amazing things God is doing.

It really was an incredible time together and a day we won't soon forget as a church.  Truly a huge blessing from the Lord and we want to be sure to give him all the glory and praise for who he is and what he's doing.

One more thing - be sure to pray for Todd this week as he and Cheryl head down to Michigan this week as Todd spends this week working on the teaching calendar for next year.  Always great to see how the Holy Spirit lays it out for Todd, then impacts us with it all year long.

To him be glory,

Eutychus

Wow!  What an incredible time we had yesterday. Celebrating communion just seemed to tie up last week’s events and lead us right into this week’s service.

I talked to one lady who was helping out in the music room with those who responded.  She wanted to leave so she could see the baptisms from up front.  Pastor Roger offered her a backstage pass so she could watch from the wings and celebrate as they came out.  That’s a good way to get really wet!

It is so good to see people obey the Lord as many did yesterday by responding to Pastor Todd's declaration that today was the day...for salvation and baptism.  Eleven people left the service part way through the message and then at the end of the service were baptized. At least three of those who responded are the fruit of this past Easter. God is always working and we get to join him.  Don’t be slow in signing up for our next baptism in the fall.  Several have already indicated they are in.  I know those being baptized and those helping them sure appreciate the Darlingtons and all the work they do to set up and tear down the hot tub.  They are such gracious hosts during the service for the ones being baptized.

At the end of the service there was a further call to make the commitment to membership, small groups, serving and giving.  It was encouraging to see the response as people signed up for all these things.  If you missed Sunday, you can listen online as always.  And if you're still thinking about some of what you heard, links to the audio and to more info can be found below.

Our leaders were part of a Builders meeting last night.  I can’t wait to find out what they heard.  There is no way I am going to miss this Sunday - Vision Sunday.  I’m coming early to get a good seat up front. Of course I’ll move in to the center to make room for others because we are going to need every seat.

God has great things in store.  We are all building this local body.  I’m sure there is a place for every willing heart and hand.  I’m signing on the line.  Are you in?

It was an incredible time together on Sunday as our elders stood in front of the church in the midst of the sermon and took responsibility on behalf of the church for our sins of the past. I heard several people commented that they had never experienced anything like it before.

I’m going to keep today’s blog short because the content of the message from Nehemiah 9 and the ‘16 Confessions’ really says it all.  You can check out both right here.  If you were not here for Sunday, be sure to listen to the sermon and pass it along to anyone else who you think might benefit from hearing it.

It was so good to have Jordan and Roxie here too. Jordan led us in some powerful, Christ-exalting worship. They are here hunting down a place to live in anticipation of their move here at the end of June when Jordan assumes the role of worship director. Pray for them both as they marry June 9. Jordan begins leading worship regularly the first Sunday in July.

Hope you’re enjoying your Victoria Day Monday. I sure am.

It’s hard to believe that since last Sunday we've been all the way to Chicago and back.  I learned so much at Harvest University!  It was cool to see people we hear all about and some we know.  Trevor Peacock and Josh Goossen from Harvest Calgary were there.   Josh is getting married soon :-)  That means we won’t be seeing Samantha Dalby around here anymore. :-(

Speaking of getting married, there was a bunch of people in church who were celebrating the night before with Steve Gallant and Amy Bryson, at their wedding.     Hey, and that reminds me, we were hanging out with Jordan Donald at Harvest U. I heard yesterday that he and Roxi are going to be here next Sunday. There is talk of just keeping them here but they are going back to get married and pack before joining us to stay in June.

It was really great to walk in and find Daryl Molyneaux would be preaching to us.  I saw him graduating in Chicago from the School of Ministry.   It seems to me that the Harvest Bible Fellowship is serious about planting churches and making sure they equip men to do a great job.  It sure sounds like he is excited about the Niagara region. He’s even excited about Barrie!

He really got me thinking about what my role should be in God’s work.  “It’s not about me, but it requires me!”  I do have a part to fulfill.  I am the body so it is my mission.  “God has no back-up kneecaps or third string thumbs.”  I’ll definitely remember that phrase!

I think God is speaking to our church, because these points sounded a little like something I heard a short while ago. Four reasons we don’t engage:

1. I don’t really believe it myself.
2. I fear human rejection.
3. I feel unworthy.
4. I am unsure of what to say.

I am going to go pray that God will give me eyes to see the need, give me a restless heart so I don’t hold back, and show me which reason is stopping me.  Then I am going to practice explaining what God did in my life so I can start with that in telling others about him.  I’ve already started my list of people to share with. Who is on your list?

Coming to you today from Elgin, IL where we're all set for the start of Harvest University 2011.  Check back here each day for updates from the conference.  I've heard something about Roving Reporters so you'll be able to get a real taste of what's going on.  Start making plans now to get here yourself next year!

On Sunday Todd mentioned something based on a quote from Charles Spurgeon that was a real beauty:
The guilt, fear and shame we bear simply arise from neglect of the Bible and are the result of ignorance.  No one can read the Bible, be open to what the Spirit is saying through it, and not come away changed.
How true. We talk about the Word of God and its importance so often but are we really living lives that are submitted to it… completely?

Too often I find that I read it legalistically – to just be able to say that I read a chapter or two today, as though God is impressed by my performance.  Or I find that my mind can easily wander as I read… I only half-listen as Todd said (not sure about you, but for me that was the point I snapped out of it and started fully listening…).

So why should you or I really be studying our Bibles?  Why should I get up early in the morning or stay up late to read it? Well, it can’t be just about knowing a bunch of facts and being able to sound smart in my small group breakout.  It’s because we’re drawn more deeply into our relationship with God because of it.  That’s the point.  It’s been said that Bible study is not the end, but rather the means to an end – the end being a tighter relationship with our creator.  I find that this is something I have to remind myself of over and over again.  I’m not just reading words on a page.  I’m entering the presence of the Lord.  And it’s there where I’m changed, it’s there where I meet Christ face to face.  If I’m open to it.  If I’m submitted.

I love that verse in Psalm 84:10 that says, “For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.” In other words, being together for worship on a Sunday is better than a thousand days at the beach or anywhere else that might seem amazing. There’s nothing like being with God’s people for worship of our great and amazing God!

So there are a bunch of things that stood out from our time together on Sunday.

Be sure to sign up for the city-wide prayer walk on Saturday, May 14. Go to www.barriechristiancouncil.org to pick your streets and to find tips on how to prayer walk. In cooperation with other churches in the city of Barrie, the goal is to pray for every home, every business, every church, every school in one day.

We were introduced to Beth Anne Freeman who was in town for the women’s retreat at the Fern Resort on Saturday. Beth Anne is a member at Harvest Bible Chapel in Elgin, Illinois. The women report an amazing time together during their one-day retreat. Including being blessed by the four men on the worship team who gave their day to serve the women! On behalf of the women, thanks, guys.

Lots of photos here.

As for Sunday and Pastor Todd’s message, Love Works from Nehemiah 6-7, we heard loud and clear that those who follow Christ also work for Christ. He talked at one point about the five reasons people don't work for Christ and that it originates with a fear within us:
  1. I don’t have much to offer (fear of what others think);
  2. I’ve been burned in the past (fear of being burned again);
  3. I don’t have time (fear of being too busy);
  4. I won’t be very good at it (fear of failure); and
  5. I might be good at it (fear of success/it may require more of me).
Maybe you’ve already decided to join the 74% of members and regular attendees he spoke of as already being engaged in ministry. What do I do if I'm ready to start working? Simply or Connections on Sunday and say that you want to serve Christ. If you’re looking to grow in your understanding of your spiritual gifts, we’ll be offering our class on that soon. But don’t wait for the class to start before you start serving! Pick up the Work for Christ booklet at Connections or download it here and then jump in and start loving on your fellow believers through your work.

And for those who are serving, the staff team is hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Event on Friday, June 17. Invitations have gone out to everyone 18 years of age and up who serve in some ministry here at Harvest. We’re looking forward to celebrating the great things God is doing through these great servants of Christ that night.

During the message, Pastor Todd shared a bit of a teaser about a vision that the elders will be presenting to the church to lead us forward into the coming years. Be sure to check out the audio of the message to hear what he said.

The first of two key events related to that is the Sunday, May 29 Builders’ Meeting. Anyone who serves as a leader in any of our ministries at Harvest will be invited to come and be briefed on this vision plan and to pray that God leads us powerfully in the coming days to fulfill the ministry he has given us as a church. And second, on Sunday, June 5, Pastor Todd will be opening God’s Word to the theme verse for the coming ministry year and sharing the elders’ vision plan with the church as a whole. It will be a do-not-miss Sunday!

That’s it. I’m heading out to see if they spelled my name right on the voters’ list. Don’t forget to VOTE TODAY! Winston Churchill said, “It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government…except for all the others that have been tried.” What a privilege and responsibility we have today to exercise our democratic rights and thus celebrate the freedom God has given us in Canada.

I hope all of you were able to take in at least one of the services at Harvest Barrie over the weekend. Everyone is talking about how great the services were.  I had no idea Psalm 1 was a favourite for so many people.  I saw several Bibles that had the whole thing highlighted or underlined.  Good thing it was up on the screen because you could hardly still read it in their Bibles.

Here are some images from Friday and Sunday.

Good Friday / Easter Sunday 2011

(Click "stop slideshow" above when you're finished viewing the photos for greater ease in reading the rest of the blog.)

Is it wrong to feel that celebrating communion on Good Friday is somehow more special and meaningful than at other times?  I have to agree with so many that the song Chad Ballantyne sang underscored the point of Friday’s message.  He gave his life – for me.  No surprise to me that Chad wrote it.  Our teams have depth!  The audio for the song and the lyrics are at the bottom of this blog.  It sure brings back the day I made it personal and trusted Christ.  It was great to hear of some who did just that this weekend.  One grandfather praying for his grandson since he was born saw his prayers answered second service on Sunday.

And Sunday was incredible!  There were so many visitors and I saw everyone making them feel at home and helping them find their way around and talking to them.  The buzz after all the services was a beautiful thing to hear.

One of the special elements from both days was a video created based on Psalm 1.  Much thanks to Tyler Steingard for his creative work on this.

One other thing you may have noticed on Friday was the rain stick.  More info about this interesting addition to our worship team can be found here.

We certainly are blessed people.  But it all comes from Christ.  This question from the small group curriculum kind of points out how we get to that place: What is the secret of becoming blessed?  Psalm 1:2, Galatians 2:20, Galatians 5:24, Philippians 3:9-11. You can see the rest of them, listen to the messages and take some time to reflect on how great this weekend was for both Good Friday and Easter Sunday here. He gave his life – He gives us life! And I know how precious that is!

Press on,

(If you weren't there but you've heard people talking about "that song from Friday", this is the one.  Lyrics here and audio below.)

Because of me

They spat upon his face
stripped him in disgrace
and they beat him more than any man could take

His foes yelled "crucify him!"
friends betrayed him and denied him
though innocent, silent he remained

On his back a robe was thrown
on his head a crown of thorns
oh, tell me what were these soldiers thinking of

For his accusers didn't know
that for their sake he took their blows
and the blood that flowed was mixed with tears of love

Chorus:
Oh why, did he give his life away
why was he crucified - was there no other way
oh, why, why did he come to earth knowing the price he had to pay
oh, the answer brings me to my knees for i know...
It was because of me

On the way up to the hill
Jesus stumbled and fell
and so another was chosen to carry the cross for him

And though the weight was gone
Christ knew it wouldn't be long
that he would have to bear the whole world and all her

Oh they mocked his holy name
behind, the solders played their games
and the hammer swung and drove the nails through

But with compassion in his eyes and to everyone's surprise
he said forgive them father for they know not what they do

And now I know why he gave his life that day
I know why he was crucified there was no other way
I know why, why he came to earth knowing the price he had to pay
and the answer brings me to my knees
for i know... It was because of me

Was a great time together on Sunday as we were led in worship by Chris Somers, worship director from Harvest Bible Chapel York Region. We also heard another message in our “Love Unleashed” series from the book of Nehemiah.

Seems some people who heard the message took it upon themselves to post Facebook status updates and to Tweet the phrase, "I want what God wants".  It is pretty challenging thought when applied to every area of my life. And Pastor Todd shared some pretty helpful points from Nehemiah's action plan that will help anyone in the midst of conflict or challenge.

When confronting follow these principles from Nehemiah 5:
  • Be specific v7c
  • Face to face v7d
  • Make an appeal to
    • the conscience v8
    • sense of community
    • to their worship of God v9a; and the mission to make disciples v9b
  • Have a specific action plan v10-11
  • Establish accountability v12b
  • Seal the deal with a formal prayer of commitment v13a
The nation of Israel was saved from the internal opposition and conflict because they followed Nehemiah’s leadership. These six principles will no doubt save any people who get into a bad spot.

It was kind of cool to have Pastor James MacDonald delivering a video announcement for Harvest University. If you're reading this on Monday, it isn't too late to sign on to attend this amazing ministry conference at Harvest in Chicago. and let her know you’re wanting to go or to get more information.

And the PUSH is on. Good Friday and Easter Sunday are just days away.  Take those invitation cards you've been given and get them out there to the people around you who don't yet know Jesus as their Saviour.  Todd encouraged us to think about the empty chairs around the auditorium and to pray and do our part to see that every chair is filled on Easter Sunday.  There's even a Facebook event page you can point your friends to.

Looking forward to seeing you Good Friday at 9 and 11:15 a.m. and Easter Sunday at 9 and 11:15 a.m..  The theme for this year is “He Gave HIS Life…He gave US Life” from Psalm 1. Be praying for the guests who will come and for all who are involved in these important gatherings of remembrance and celebration.

Have a great week! Press on.

Good times this Sunday.  And by "good" I mean, "deeply convicting and uncomfortable."  Chapter 4 from Nehemiah really pressed me to the mat and wouldn't let me up.  Nothing like facing the reality that the comfortable opposition-free Christian life I've been living is nowhere near the life Jesus lived.  Or his disciples.  Or his early church... not to mention Nehemiah and the Israelites themselves. God put on the heart of Nehemiah to rebuild the wall and finally get things moving in the right direction for the nation of Israel.  No more dragging their feet, no more wasting time - no more excuses - only a life lived in surrender to God and his game plan for their lives.

So thankfully there were no issues and the wall went up without a hitch. Oh wait... in Chapter 4 they encountered problems. Sanballat and his lackeys oppose the work of God and really get in the face of Nehemiah and the workers.  Ever feel that way?  God lays something on your heart - he calls you to action, but then what happens?  Problems.  Opposition. The thing we need to understand deeply is that opposition in our lives to the work God is doing is the norm.  Todd mentioned that one of the ways we need to stay strong and keep going when the going gets tough is to rehearse the truth in our hearts and minds constantly.  Nehemiah did this in verse 14 when he said, "Remember the Lord, who is great in awesome." Todd gave us seven ways to rehearse the truth at any moment:

1. Trouble and persecution are guaranteed for Christ followers (John 16:33, 15:20)
2. The gospel is foolishness to those whom the spirit is not working (1 Corinthians 1:18, 1 Peter 2:8)
3. The hatred and opposition is directed at the Lord first (John 15:18)
4. God will execute justice  - our task is to love our enemies (Romans 12:19)
5. Christ has overcome the world and will give us grace when we need it (Matt 10:19)
6. God loves us and is for us (Romans 8:31)
7. Something amazing awaits us on the other side of eternity (Romans 8:18)

Maybe this is something you could print out and stick in your Bible as a reminder this week.  We will have more boldness and more passion to stand firm for God and live for him when these truths permeate the depths of our hearts.  Are you doing that?  Am I?  Like I said, "deeply convicting and uncomfortable."

Good worship today too.  Be sure to check out this song that fit so well with the message.

Some reminders:
Check out Harvest University and if you're able to join us.
Choose your streets and sign up for the Barrie Prayer Walk on May 14.
Take action with the Easter invitations.  Who is your hardest person to invite?  Invite them!

It was a great Sunday.  Make it a great week.  Press on.

I read all the way through Nehemiah chapter three!  Very exciting stuff. Building walls, moving stones. Couldn’t have been good for those jeweller’s hands.  I’m sure Pastor Roger would say the guys named were the small group leaders and it was their small groups working with them to build each section. Makes me wonder what our small groups could build!

This whole thing about taking risks sure is stirring up some thinking.  I know it’s risky to sit in third floor windows.  But I sure am wondering what I’m risking these days. It seems our whole society is about mitigating risk.  Is there really a risk if God is leading us?  Isn’t it worth taking a risk to experience his presence, power and provision?  That is sure to be a topic of discussion at small group.  As always, if you missed Sunday you can get both the message and the worship song list online.

The baptisms were sure a highlight of the service.  Cool for Jordan to get to be baptized on her 16th birthday. Thinking that although that’s a great way to remember being baptized, the real thing to remember is what she is testifying to.  Do you remember the day you believed and received Jesus as your Saviour? It was great to hear people say out loud in front of their church family and relatives, things like:
  • “My life before Christ: chaos. I am a follower of Jesus Christ. He is the only way.”
  • “I was saved at a grade eight youth retreat.”
  •  “I came to Christ at Camp Mini-Yo-We.”
  • “My life before Christ was all about getting more and more things.  I can't explain why but I started reading my Bible. I realize how important baptism is.  I'm testifying that I am a follower of Christ.”
  • “I didn't have a personal relationship with God. I was spinning in circles.  I didn't have things figured out.  I couldn't fix it.  The message was speaking directly to my life and I don't even remember going down to the front.  I accepted Jesus as my Saviour.  I've made drastic changes in my life.”
We need to pray that God will continue to lead and grow and bless Jordan, Michael, Brenda, Aleks and Amy.

He gave his life so he could give us life.  That about sums it up and is a great theme for Easter services.  I have some people who need to get this invitation.  It’s a long week but Sunday’s coming!

I thought it was pretty funny yesterday, that Pastor Roger talked about another first century guy that had a small group like me.  Mine was actually a pretty large group, which tends to happen when you have a good preacher like Paul!  (Though he didn’t exactly keep my attention!)  What is most important about our small groups is that they are different from any other kind of group because they are sharing in the life of Jesus together.  We really are all “in him”.  It’s intriguing to think about what kind of difference that makes when we meet together.

It also gave communion a whole different sense.  Celebrating together that we are forgiven because Jesus has the authority to forgive us – and has! – also emphasized the unity we have through him.  Being on a team that is bringing people to Jesus for forgiveness is great!

By the way, did you catch the significance of Pastor Todd’s message from Haiti?  Here is what he wrote:
I watched as Haitian pastors walked up to put their own offering into a cardboard box at the front of the worship centre.  Today I'll see the same happen in a church in Deschapelles.
Listen to what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 8:2-5.
For in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.
I cannot help but see that this is the Haitian church giving toward relief of the saints in Japan. Out of their extreme poverty giving beyond their means, willingly, joyfully! It is amazing to see. This is not about whether or not Japan is a resilient, industrialized nation that will bounce back. This is about the followers of Christ standing with the church in their time of need. It is our love tangibly expressed for the body of Christ and thereby witnessing to the world of the love of Jesus Christ (John 13:35).

Let's give out of our abundance and bring glory to the name!

What a great opportunity for us to stand with the church in Haiti and help the church in Japan.  We raised over $8,000 for this goal!  We probably still have some work to do to keep up to those Haitians! If you want to read the day by day updates from Tom Kim in Japan the CHC web site is http://churcheshelpingchurches.com.   If you still have a gift you can bring it on Sunday, give online or just press the “Canada Helps” logo on the web site.

Good Friday is just four weeks away.  Make sure a friend or neighbor or workmate gets the invitation that was in the bulletin.

Shortly after that the churches of Barrie will be joining together to pray for the whole city in one day on May 14!  Go to www.BarrieChristianCouncil.org/PrayerWalk to sign up for your streets.  (I’ll be including a third floor walk-up on Troas Ave!)

There was a great time of prayer last night at Timothy Christian School.  Without prayer, nothing else matters!  I’m looking forward to hearing how God answers the prayers we have been praying.

Peace,

Eutychus

Walls can keep out just about everything - except on Sunday morning during the Scripture reading first service when we happened to pick up the sound frequency of some teaching from our Spiritual Disciplines class down the hall... Even the thick walls at church yesterday morning couldn't stop that.  It was a pretty funny moment actually, but I doubt the Israelites in the book of Nehemiah saw anything funny about their wall situation.  Twelve years after the book of Ezra ends they still aren't able to rest securely as a community, all because the walls around Jerusalem weren't built.  Nehemiah hears about the people's "great trouble and shame" because of this and he's broken up about it.

Far too often I find myself the opposite of Nehemiah... people all around me are in distress and I'd rather catch some Zzz's on a window ledge somewhere rather than show some heartfelt concern.  How do I shake myself from this??  In 1:5, Nehemiah appeals to God's steadfast love and how he keeps his covenant with us IF we love and obey him.  Having concern for our neighbour and praying for them is great, but I also need to obey God's command and actually show them love with my actions.  Much for me to chew on this week... I'm looking forward to this Nehemiah series.

We also sang the song "You are Saviour which you can check out right here.

I'm sure you're all aware of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan a week ago.  Churches Helping Churches is stepping up with an opportunity for us to help the churches in Japan.  As in Haiti, many organizations are there to help with infrastructure repairs but who will help the church...except the church?  This Sunday, rather than taking up our HOPE offering as we usually do on the last Sunday of the month, we will be taking up a special offering for the churches in Japan.  (To give online, please for instructions.)  You can check out the plans for helping in Japan on the Churches Helping Churches website.  As Pastor Todd mentioned Sunday morning, CHC reports that the churches in Haiti have already committed to being part of this offering for Japan.  Please pray and plan this week for what you can give on Sunday.

After the service we had some prayer at the front for Pastor Todd who is heading out to Haiti Wednesday to preach at a Churches Helping Pastors conference - pray for him as he travels and prepares to also preach at a Haitian church Sunday morning as well.

Remember, we also have the scrolls at the front of the auditorium for anyone to sign in the next couple of weeks too.  Check out the first two messages in March to catch up on what that's about.

Press on,

Choose Your Own Adventure is a series of children’s stories where the reader makes choices that determine the main character’s actions.  The series sold 250 million copies in the 1980s and 1990s.

Yesterday at Harvest Barrie we concluded the series Worship Rises from the book of Ezra and as we reached the end of this particular story we found that the conclusion of this adventure was to be determined by us.

Last week’s message (March 6) set us up for a week of meditation on six heart-hindrances that will keep us from truly worshipping God. And in the final verses of Ezra 10 we find a list of names of the people who recognized their sin, repented before God and pledged to do something about it.  Yesterday Pastor Todd led us through a similar experience.  In both services the front of the worship centre was filled as people moved to tables to sign their names as a pledge to respond to what God had showed them over the week.

If you missed yesterday, you can listen to the message online.  When you get to the end of the message, get your pen and join those who have made a commitment for change.  If you were at church yesterday, this song will be significant to you.

Monday morning may have greeted you with some questions about what you should do next to keep the commitment you made yesterday.  Here are three steps to get you off on the right foot.

Radical Amputation – What sin did you name?  Where possible, you need to cut off the source of that sin.  This involves getting specific and calling sin out for what it is and then removing any triggers for that sin that exist in your life.  Maybe you’ve identified a moral issue that needs to be controlled (Matthew 15:19).  Resources, like Covenant Eyes, are available to help with both content and the amount of time spent on your computer.

Radical Accountability – Who will you tell?  We all need help to overcome our flesh.  This doesn’t happen in an instant and we need the help and motivation that comes from having someone walk along beside us.  Maybe you’ve identified a problem with your words and the way you speak to others (Matthew 15:18).  You will find that this will be more successfully battled after being shared with someone in your small group who knows you well and can draw it to your attention when they hear your words getting out of control.

Radical Adoration – Who will you worship?  This is the crux of the matter.  It is always a worship issue.  Perhaps you identified a lack of generosity within yourself (Matthew 6:21) indicating that it may be things or money that you are worshipping. Only when we make Christ the centre point of worship will we get the story right.

Lots of changed lives at Harvest yesterday.  Did you catch this quote? “I don’t want to be just watching what God is doing. I have been refusing to humble myself and deal with things. No more. Now is the time. I’m not putting it off another day.”  Don’t get left behind, just watching what God is doing in the lives around you.  Now is the time.

Around the world people were following #tsunami over the weekend to keep up with what was happening in Japan and in other countries that found themselves in the path of the tsunami. Churches Helping Churches will be announcing our response to the Japan crisis over the next few days. They report that the churches in Haiti are eager to get on board to help out their sister churches in Japan.  Wondering how to pray for Japan?  Check out this post from desiringgod.org.

Whatever you’re doing for March Break, come back hungry on Sunday for Love Unleashed, next in our Not Going Back theme .  Read Nehemiah 1 to get ready.

Peace,

Eutychus

As I sat in the service I noticed an irony at work. While Pastor Todd was preaching on the hindrances to worship, there were several unintended hindrances happening right in the room!  Our tech team would tell you that it was “just one of those days” when things went sideways a bit.  Doesn’t happen very often, but just kind of funny that it happened on this particular day.

And, by the way, the tech team members are gold!

As for the message in Ezra 9, there were a couple of key parts that bear reviewing with a mind to responding to what we heard. The six heart-hindrances that Pastor Todd taught us are:
1. The heart is where generosity starts  – Matt 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
2.     The heart is where all of our words start – Matt 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart
3.     The heart is where right moral choices start – Matt 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
4.     The heart is where forgiveness starts – Matt 18:35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart
5.     The heart is where justice and compassion start – 1 John 3:17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?
6.     The heart is where mission starts – Rom 10:1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

All of these are potential hindrances to worship, and each of us needs to ask. “Are any of them true of me?”  The whole message on audio is available onlline.  And we were encouraged to pray Ezra’s prayer from 9:5-15.  The five key characteristics of that prayer were that it was a grieving prayer, a honest and revealing prayer, a remembering prayer, an agreeing with God prayer, and an accepting of whatever he wants to send my way prayer.  God will honour such a prayer, and he will “brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving.”  In next Sunday’s message we’ll be looking at the people’s response to the hindrance to worship that had been exposed by God’s Word. Each of us are being asked to “consider our ways” over the next seven days. To pray. To fast. To come ready to respond publicly to the preaching of God’s Word.  In your small group you’ll be focusing on the heart-hindrances in your own life.  If you’re not in a small group yet (get in one!), you can still look at the questions that will be used.  I am praying that Sunday will be a worship breakthrough day for many.

In other news…It was great to see our pre-service prayer group walking around the facility on Sunday between 8 and 9 a.m. They are taking prayer "to the streets" so to speak, praying in each classroom, in the foyer, and the worship centre for all that will go on during the course of the morning. At 8:30 a.m. they are gathering together at the front of the worship centre to pray together for God’s power and presence in our worship times.  Anyone can join them for part of that time or the whole time.

We also had the privilege and joy of welcoming some new Harvest members.  These committed Christ-followers have signed on the dotted line saying, “WE’RE IN!” Each of them is pledged to worship Christ, walk with Christ and work for Christ here in our Harvest family.  I’m thanking God for each of them…
  • Jason and Angela Brooks
  • Dannielle Prince
  • Hilary Shewfelt
  • Jim and Ethel Beattie
  • Chris Mason
  • Victor and Corinne Pereira
  • Collin and Michelle Hartwick
  • Steve Gallant
  • Phil and Robin Radford
  • Dan and Fran Courtemanche
And finally, a couple of weeks ago, Pastor Roger told us about one of the first Harvest church planters who is now pastoring in Southern California. Mel Svendsen had a brutal heart attack and was close to death. As you can see from the photo taken March 3, he is home with his amazing family recovering from the attack and subsequent surgery.  God is good! People from all over were praying in earnest for Mel, and we thank God for his grace in Mel’s life and that of his family.

Well, it was another great morning together Sunday.  I'm a huge fan of Starfield and you can catch their song that we sang below.

As always, the songs from Sunday along with YouTube links are available under "News" from the main page of the website.  And the audio from Sunday's message is available from the "Audio Sermons" button on the main page.  This week it includes a brief impromptu interview with Moyra Marrible.  Moyra was talking about God's goodness to her through her recent surgery experience. Pastor Todd asked if she'd had an opportunity to speak for Christ. She replied, "Absolutely.  I had a ball!"

Todd's message was all about being a godly leader which came from Ezra 7-8.  It says repeatedly that the hand of the Lord was on Ezra. Are our lives marked by evidence of God's work?  Have things happened in us and to us that only God could get the credit for?  Am I growing and being used?  Or am I basically asleep while God moves in and through others...?

Ezra 7:10 says that not only did Ezra study the law but he also lived it out and taught people what it was all about.  As God's hand is on me, am I investing that in others lives? Who are the people in my life who are looking to me to be the example of godly leadership?

I have a lot to think about and prayerfully consider this week...

“Why would I throw my body off a perfectly safe piece of land?”

That is a great question and it launched us into our study of Haggai 1-2 yesterday.

As far as I could tell no cell phones went off in either service so I think we were all pretty riveted to the thoughts about “considering our ways”.  Today is a perfect time to hit pause and maybe reflect on our busyness and whether it is really accomplishing God’s purposes for us.

While you are enjoying family time it would be good to remember these blessings Mike shared with us as well:
  • Acts 1:8 – We have the Holy Spirit
  • Psalm 119:105 – We have the Word of God
  • Acts 2:42-47 – We have the people of God
  • Matthew 28:19-20 - We have purpose
You may (or may not) know that we started the service with a video about being worshippers everywhere and all the time.  Of course you would have to have been an “on-time” worshipper to see it.  But you can check out this great song from yesterday to spend some time worshipping right now wherever you are in your day.

The audio for yesterday's message, the sermon notes and small group curriculum are all available on the website. One of the discussions suggested for small groups is this: Share some things we can do to be open for God to stir up our hearts.  (Haggai 1:14) Here's one suggestion: Ask him to.  May God stir up our desires!

By the way, we prayed for Mel Svendson in our services.  He planted the Lake Zurich Harvest Bible Chapel and has recently been pastoring in California.  He suffered a massive heart attack on Saturday evening. He is now stable but will have a long recovery ahead.  Harvest Lake Zurich has updates on their Facebook page.  Thank you for continuing in prayer for Mel and for each other.

Meanwhile, back in Ezra, the story continues.  Watch for our preview blog at the end of this week to see what Pastor Todd has for us this coming Sunday.  He was away this past weekend investing in one of his sons.

It was a great time together Sunday morning for worship at Harvest.

Pastor Todd had us in Ezra 6:13-22 talking about joy. You can hear the message and get the small group questions online.  He shared some definitions of joy and a chart contrasting “happiness” and “joy”. I thought some of you might be looking for this.

“Biblical joy consists of the deep and abiding confidence that all is well regardless of circumstance and difficulty.”  John MacArthur

“Joy is supernatural delight in the person, purposes, and people of God.” James MacDonald

"Joy is the serious business of heaven" G.K. Chesterton

 Happiness
Joy
 emotion  attitude
 requires positive circumstances
 exists even in difficult times
 temporary  lasting
 comes from within ourselves
 comes from the Holy Spirit
Satan wants us to be happy
 Satan would steal our joy

One great thought that Pastor Roger put into the small groups questions was this, “Are there any areas of partial obedience or ‘rebellions large and small’ stealing my joy?” That’s a question I can think about a lot this week.

Dawn and the worship team led us in a new song…powerful. You got the link for that on Friday (the Sunday preview blog as well as the ‘News Updates’ on the front page of the website always have the set list up for you to see before Sunday). Anyway, the lyrics for ‘A Mighty Fortress’ by Christie Nockels are powerful as I said. Check them out and download the song on iTunes. We’ll be doing it again soon.

Our God is a consuming fire,
A burning holy flame, with glory and freedom
Our God is, the only righteous judge,
Ruling over us with kindness and wisdom

We will keep our eyes on you
We will keep our eyes on you

A mighty fortress is our God
A sacred refuge is your name
Your kingdom is unshakable
With you forever we will reign

Our God is jealous for his own
None could comprehend, his love and his mercy
Our God is exalted on his throne
High above the heavens
Forever he's worthy...

We will keep our eyes on you
We will keep our eyes on you

We will keep our eyes on you
We will keep our eyes on you
So we can set our hearts on you
Lord we will set our hearts on you!

Two other notes from Sunday… A couple of families brought beautiful baby daughters to be dedicated on Sunday. Mike presided over that with Ben and Janet DeBoer and their daughter, Ava (a little sister for Ben Jr) and with Matt and Louisa Wanless and their daughter Lucy (and little sister for Jayde). Pray for these families as they seek to raise their children for Christ.

And Terry Codling, the chair of our elders, brought the elders’ insert to our attention. You can download a copy from our Resources page.  He explained that the elders are sharing five of their key requests with the church family and that we want to hear from the church. Please be sure to send in your response. The elders will respond to each one.

I hope you have a joy-filled week! And if you’re into it, “Joyful Valentine’s Day”.

Sunday was another great day together. Before the services started so many were busy setting up, preparing for worship, getting ready for Higher Ground, and it was cool to see several people gathered quietly praying together for the services. Thank you to those who work so hard so that many can come worship Christ . If you're interested in joining the pre-service prayer time, you can join them any Sunday before the 9 a.m. service in the Higher Ground hall.

Chad Ballantyne and the team led us in worship.  All of the songs from Sunday are listed on the website but one of my favourites that we've been singing lately is "Always".  You can check it out on YouTube below.

Pastor Todd delivered a great challenge to each of us from Ezra 5-6:12.  (Audio, sermon notes and small group questions available on the website.) The thought he pulled from the text for us was that working with all diligence for God requires that when I hear the Word I get right to work, seeing his favour on what I'm doing, and remaining humble about what's being accomplished.

One of the thoughts that struck me was that we come face to face with the Word of God to 'consider our ways.'  Scripture is meant to change us and shape us into God's image.  If we find that it's not doing that in our lives, then we have to identify the reason(s) for that.  He mentioned that three common obstacle that get in the way of our obedience to God are ignorance, discouragement and rebellion.  Are we just unaware of how we should be living (ignorance)?  Are we frustrated about how hard life can be sometimes (discouragement)?  Or maybe we know exactly what God wants from us but we're just refusing to do it (rebellion).

As you read this, consider your ways.  What are the areas of your life that need to be brought into line under God's Word so that you can be an effective worshipper this week?  I am thinking about this and feeling quite convicted, to be honest.  There are a few things that immediately come to my mind that I need to deal with before the Lord so that everything I do for Christ can be done with diligence.

Next time you see me feel free to ask how that's going.

Mike

Sunday morning saw plowed roads and bright sunshine as we gathered for worship.

Leading us in worship was Jordan Donald from Harvest Bible Chapel, Chicago.  The full list of worship songs is available online but be sure to check out this new song that Jordan introduced to us.

Your Love Never Fails

The wind is strong and the water’s deep
But I’m not alone here in the open seas
‘Cause your love never fails
The chasm was far too wide
I never thought I’d reach the other side
Your love never fails
You stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
There may be pain in the night
But joy comes in the morning
And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that you love
Your love never fails

Pastor Todd took us into Ezra chapter three, “Finding God in relationship not religion.”  You can find both the audio of the message and the sermon notes in one place on our website.

One thing Todd reminded us of was that God builds nations and churches on families.  We need God-centred families that make worship a priority.  It is exciting to me that our men’s groups are going to be going after that very thing in their new study.  We are looking at the book, “Four Pillars of a Man’s Heart” by Stu Weber (available from our bookstore).  He says, “What kind of man builds a civilization, a small civilization, that outlasts him?  A four pillared man: …  A man who will bear the weight, stand against the elements, and hold one small civilization intact in a world that would like nothing better than to tear it down.”  God is calling us to some things greater than ourselves.  It will be great to discover them together!

We definitely need God’s strength, power and direction to accomplish what he is calling us to so let's gather Sunday night to seek him.  We will be praying together at Timothy at 6:30. Join us in crying out to God for our church.
Seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
