I adore my grandmother.  While I sat by her hospital bedside this week, as she was recovering from a mini stroke, my heart was so filled with gratitude for her.

We were feeling guilty that she had made the trek to Barrie at 92 to spend Easter with our family…..always a lively gathering….maybe it was too much for her.

But in the midst of all the probing and testing, all Nana could say was “God knew”.  She was thankful that as her body lapsed, she was surrounded by family and not alone in her little room in the retirement home an hour away.

She was thankful that she was brought to RVH, an incredible, well-equipped hospital, and received such amazing, thorough care from the staff.  “God knew where I needed to be”, she said in such a peaceful, confident manner.

I love to listen to Nana’s stories, especially of life growing up in rural Saskatchewan, born to two deaf parents.  She told us again of the missionaries that travelled to her small town and shared the gospel with her and at the age of eight she gave her life to Jesus.

How comforting it was to hear this life changing story; to know that when our Lord calls her home, she’ll be with him forever.

My heart swelled with gratitude.  I am so grateful for my Nana’s faith; that she took her children to church and exposed them to the gospel. I am so grateful that my parents felt it was important for us to go to church as a family.  Seeds of faith were planted.  And although I didn’t fully understand the type of relationship that my heavenly Father wanted with me, I did believe that he loved me.

Although I wasn’t walking with him, I know now that he was relentless in his pursuit of me.  When the time was right, when I came to end of myself – those seeds of faith took root.  How grateful I am that my children know and understand that Christ died to save them and are being discipled and mentored to live out their faith.

I am reminded of 2 Corinthians 4:18 “as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

I am grateful for the seeds that were planted over the Easter weekend  - we may not see the fruit right away, but God is at work.

God’s ways are not our ways – I’m overwhelmed by that every day.  A missionary led to a tiny town in the prairies had enough faith share Christ’s love with my grandmother and look what God did and continues to do.

I realize we’re up to our eyeballs in snow right now and you’ve just expended more time and energy shoveling and scraping. Your socks are wet and your hands are cold. Let me take you away from all that for a moment!

Close your eyes and picture yourselves driving to TCS with your sunglasses and flip flops on, your excited little campers in the car, the smell of sunscreen fills the air.  You arrive at the school, the buzz is unreal, children are jumping up and down, leaders greet them with huge smiles and high fives.  You leave your kids and head off to work, or to the grocery store, or to grab a coffee with a friend or better yet to the waterfront, to soak in creation for a few hours.  All of this, knowing your kids are being loved, cared for, and are pressing in for a greater knowledge and understanding of our heavenly Father.

Are you smiling yet?  You should be 'cause we are gearing up for another fantastic week of Harvest day camp.   Registrations are already rolling in for Gotta Move! Camp, which is taking place July 15 – 19 from 9 a.m. to noon each day.  Your kids will enjoy fun, fellowship, crafts, games, solid teaching and rockin’ worship.

Children ages 2 to 12 are welcome and the cost is $40 per camper.  Take advantage of the $10 off volunteer discount and join our amazing team of dedicated servants.  You can register at the Harvest Kids welcome desk on Sundays, at our office (258 Bayfield St.) or online.

We’re pretty pumped about getting into God’s Word with your kids this summer.   This program is designed to give children a biblical understanding of what it means to walk with God. Through each lesson, children will see that God provides everything we need to be close to him and that he does require a response...having faith means we "Gotta Move!"

Lessons include:

1. His Grace, Our Obedience (Genesis 6-7)

2. His Word, Our Commitment (Joshua 1&3)

3. His Son, Our Response (John 1)

4. His Forgiveness, Our Repentance (Luke 15:11-32)

5. His Spirit, Our Trust (John 14)

We’re so excited about partnering with you to “train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it”.

Welcome in a little sunshine and warmth and get registered for "Gotta Move!" camp TODAY!

WedWednesdayJanJanuary23rd2013 The 3 W’s for Kids!
byJeannie Coros Tagged Harvest Kids 0 comments Add comment
If you've been around Harvest for a while, you should absolutely know what the three W’s are – if you’re fairly new, here’s what you’ll find it on our website under "About Us – Distinctives":

Mature disciples worship Christ, walk with Christ, and work for Christ. A person committed to a relationship with Christ focuses on personally walking with him, worshiping him, and working for him. That person will experience significant growth in personal sanctification and therefore will experience a closer personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and will become "mature in Christ."—Colossians 1:28

The process of sanctification and maturity -  wow!   All I know is that it’s a long road and an uphill battle that I fight daily.  But I so want to get it done each day – to be a 24-7 worshiper; to put God first in all things and to serve him with my whole heart, soul, mind and strength.  All of this – to bring my God the glory and honour he truly deserves.

As adult Christ-followers – this is what we strive for; this is what we work toward…but is it just for adults?  Just think…if kids learn from a young age what it means to worship, walk with and work for Christ – it will become a way of life for them and allow them a solid foundation to build on.

We teach these distinctives in Harvest kids.

I have been blessed by watching our kids grow as worshipers on Sunday morning.  I see them raise their hands as they lift high the name of Jesus in song.  I’ve seen young worshipers grow over the years to become strong worship leaders in children’s ministry who are passionate about seeking God this way.

They are taught weekly about the creator of the universe, who loves them unconditionally.  They learn what it means to have a relationship with Jesus and what it looks like to walk with him.  They start learning about the concept of small groups at age six and spending time praying with and for one another.  We raise the bar each week and they always meet and often exceed our expectations.  We urge them to spend time in God’s Word each day and share with them what a gift it truly is to us.

Last week, a sweet five year old told me she needed a Bible (I keep a stash in my cupboard, for just such occasions).  After receiving it – she hugged it tightly and started skipping up and down the hall singing, “I have a Bible, I have a Bible”.  LOVED THAT!! It’s a treasure to her already!

Working for Christ seems to come naturally to our Harvest Kids.  Some have already spent time working alongside their parents as they serve in classrooms and we have watched older children step into juniorlLeader roles.  They have been taught and mentored by our senior high youth who continue to set an excellent example for them.  I love it when they graduate to grade four and they come running up to me with excitement and ask, "Can I be a junior leader now?" We make them sign a contract, attend a monthly meeting…it’s a commitment that they don’t take lightly.  They work hard, submit to authority, use their gifts, and glorify God!

It blesses me greatly to see the 3 W’s in action – especially in children.  It’s like seeing God’s plan for knowing, loving and serving him unfold right in front of me.  How awesome is our God.

Did anyone else weep through last Sunday’s message?  Or find themselves in tears as faces of little ones appeared in the media?  The tragedy in Newtown hit so close to home for me.  I spend my days caring for and planning for children; I love watching them grow and flourish, laugh and learn, run and play.  I’ve always had the most difficulty  hearing news about any harm coming to children.  I admittedly am challenged when I read through Scripture and see passages like this, And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction every city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors.” Deuteronomy 2:34

I mourn not only the loss of innocent children, and incredible educators, who pour into young hearts; but the one responsible for the tragedy.  Lost in darkness and a slave to sin; such a troubled heart.  It causes me to repeat over and over, "Come back Jesus, please come back."

It’s nothing new, I know.  We live in a fallen world.  We are surrounded by darkness and at times it can be consuming.

However, we were reminded again on Sunday…everything changed...The Child with 4 Names...Mighty God!  ”The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone”.

How blessed we are to have a source of strength when we are weak, a light in the darkness.  We don’t have to make sense of it, because God is sovereign, we just need to trust in him.

Mind you, I was convicted that I must be so careful not take such things for granted.  Christ saved me from destruction, although I didn’t deserve it and as a result I can claim Isaiah 9:2 and be thankful that I no longer walk in darkness.

I don’t want to have to wait for tragedy to remind me that my children are a gift and to be thankful for those who pour into them – I need to exercise constant humility and gratitude for the blessings I’ve been allowed.

My heart is so heavy for those who have suffered loss and also for those who are walking in darkness.  My prayers are fervent for both – now more than ever.

How blessed I am with three incredible children, a loving husband, abundance beyond belief, a church family I adore and the unchanging love of a Mighty God.

How blessed I am to spend my days with children and those who love on them.

How blessed we are to be able to open God’s Word and be challenged and encouraged!

How blessed we are to be celebrating the birth of our Saviour!

How blessed we are that everything changed!

How blessed we are!

Awana Fun!

What a blast we had last Wednesday night with Pastors Roger and Mike, our worship director Jordan Donald and our elder chair, Terry Codling.  We were so blessed to have Jordan lead worship for us - such fun songs!  Our youngest Awana kids loved playing Puggle and Cubbies games with them. Our Sparkies were so thankful for their help in handbook time. Our pastors were blown away with how well our clubbers memorized God’s Word!

We REALLY enjoyed our question and answer period in T&T large group time.  We discovered that Terry’s dream car is a Lamborghini, and that if pastor Mike was a superhero, he’d be Pastor Roger!  We found out that Jordan’s favourite country is Romania and why Pastor Roger has grey hair.  We also learned how much these four men love Jesus and God’s Word and how excited they are to share it with others.

Awana is so grateful for our pastors and elders and can’t wait to party with them again next year!

Awana Loves!

We are blessed and love to bless others.  Our clubbers and leaders are working hard right now to raise enough funds to buy firewood to heat Harvest Bible Chapel, Metanoia, Ghioroc in Romania this winter.  We are gathering all our pennies, selling candy grams and gift tags and are having a "Winter Warmer" on November 21.  Families and friends are welcome to join us that night as we play our penny game and see who the winning team is, listen to Pastor Todd as he shares with us about his recent trip to Romania and enjoy hot chocolate in the lobby while purchasing grams and tags.  All are welcome to join in the fun.  We are excited to see God working in and through our Awana kids as they seek to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Without prayer nothing else matters!

Here’s what I heard in the car on the way home from prayer and praise night (from teenagers);

“That was the best prayer night EVER; it was so great to pray with my friends and do it on our own time”.

“I really liked the list, it helped me think of other things I could pray for AND I prayed out loud for the first time”.

“What a sweet time with our church family”.

So if you missed it – Jordan led us as we lifted high the name of Jesus in worship (in the lobby); then we prayed vertical prayers collectively and praised our great God for who he is.  We were then free to travel to nine different prayer stations where we praised God for what he is doing in and through our church and offered up prayers for the various ministries at Harvest Barrie.

If you weren’t able to join us, spend some time today praying through these nine key areas, because….without prayer nothing else matters!

Prepare to be convicted!  I was beyond blessed a couple of weeks ago when two young ladies bounced up to me and excitedly told me they had something to share.  A sweet friend had challenged them to memorize God’s Word and they proceeded to recite Psalm 103 verses 1 to 13.  That's 13 verses….from memory!!!  It was incredible to hear the Word of the Lord coming out of these angelic little voices.

I was moved to tears and challenged beyond belief.  Look at the richness of the words they have hidden in their hearts:

Bless the Lord, O my soul,  and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

Bless the Lord, O my soul,  and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity,  who heals all your diseases ,who redeems your life from the pit,

who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

The Lord works righteousness  and justice for all who are oppressed.

He made known his ways to Moses,  his acts to the people of Israel.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

He will not always chide,  nor will he keep his anger forever.

He does not deal with us according to our sins,  nor repay us according to our iniquities.  For as high as the heavens are above the earth,  so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

as far as the east is from the west,  so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

I love that so much of God’s character is wrapped up in these verses and the solid reminder of his steadfast love for us.  I love that these girls have hidden these powerful words in their hearts and will be able to call on them at a moment’s notice in their time of need.  I love that they will undoubtedly encourage many, who are thirsty for a word from Lord.

This is one of the reasons I’m a big fan of Awana and am thrilled that our church offers this program.  After completing five books, kids will have memorized over 500 Scripture verses – unbelievable!  If our kids are doing this – what is stopping us?  I have certainly used age as an excuse claiming that it’s so much easier for kids to learn anything!  Time is another big excuse – lame!  I certainly have time when I’m waiting in line at the grocery store, or driving in my car or drying my hair – I just need to make it a priority.

I am excited about my current memory verse project and that a fellow staff member is holding me accountable to locking this Scripture down.  The verses are pertinent to a current struggle in my life and I know the power that God’s Word has to transform me – so grateful that we have it at our fingertips.

So as we cruise into these delightful summer months – what’s your plan?  Were you challenged by our Harvest kids as well?  Are you ready to make God’s Word a priority in your life?  I’d love to hear what you will do or are doing to hide God’s Word in your heart.  Be blessed!

WedWednesdayJunJune6th2012 Margins
byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 1 comments Add comment

Do you remember the days when your teacher would prepare you for your weekly spelling dictation by telling you to write the numbers 1-10 in your margin and make sure it’s double spaced?  You’d get out your spelling book or wait for the sheet of foolscap to be handed out and look for the thin red line running vertical down the page.  The margin was clear and you diligently followed instructions, printing the numbers from 1 - 10 down the page.  This allowed your teacher to indentify each word and allowed space to correct you if necessary.  The margin was a brilliant discovery.  We use margins when we create documents. We can change them if we need to with a click of a button.  We would never think of having ‘0’ margins on our page; our documents would become illegible.  We certainly wouldn’t dream of having a -5 margin - not possible!

A few years ago, a wise Christian woman whom I admire approached me about stepping down from a serving position she was in.  Her comment was, "If I continue in this position, I just won’t have any margin in my life."  I had never heard the word margin used in this way before and I asked her to explain.  She went on to say that she was very careful not to overbook or over schedule herself or her family, otherwise there is no time to rest or rejuvenate.  Such wise words – spoken from the Lord, through this woman, directly to my heart!  You see, I am the master of busy – I thrive on it! "No" was not in my vocabulary and I loved the challenge of seeing how much I could accomplish in the shortest time possible…so I could get on to the next task.  Can anyone identify with this?

Anyway, this lead to much prayer, seeking the Lord, his Word and wise counsel.  I didn’t have to look far to be struck by these words, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God” Exodus 20:8.  Not only did I start looking at the Sabbath differently, but I had to take a serious look at my commitments and our family calendar.  It wasn’t easy, but I had to back down from things I loved doing and start saying no, even though the need was great.  I had someone holding me accountable for my time and ensuring that I was allowing rest and maintaining margins in my life.  How grateful I am to God for who he put in my life and for allowing me to take a step back, seek his face and lean on him during this time.

This continues to be a struggle for me, especially when I started working Sundays. I was reminded yesterday how our pastor/boss is fiercely protective of our Saturdays as a staff; he understands the wisdom of a Sabbath and how important rest is to our heavenly Father.  It caused me to stop and re-evaluate the margins in my life…once again.  I want to be so tuned in to God’s will for me, that I protect my time and make wise decisions before I hit the wall.  You see, I can identify with the exhausted Elijah in 1 Kings 19, who cried out, “I have had enough Lord”.  I can keep running much longer than I should.  But our faithful and loving God granted rest to Elijah and restored him.  I want to always give God my best and in order to be a useful vessel for him I need margins in my life that are clearly defined and legible.  What do your margins look like?

TueTuesdayMayMay29th2012 Huddle and Highlights
byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 1 comments Add comment

Hey – anyone else overwhelmed and completely exhausted after the incredibly God-glorifying celebration weekend we just experienced at Harvest???  We just finished our weekly "huddle" as a staff – where we share our highlights from the weekend, chat about what’s coming up and pray.  We all agreed that there was really nothing about this fifth celebration of our 10th anniversary that wasn’t a highlight….

**What an incredible blessing it was to sit under the teaching of Pastor James and work through John 2:1-12.   If you saw our storylines video, you'll realize that the fact that I was sitting beside my wonderful husband, holding his hand, loving him more than I thought possible IS one of God’s miracles.  Was it instant and easy– no!  Did it take faith and perseverance – yes!  But, God’s promises are true and he really doesn’t EVER leave you or forsake you.  Find encouragement in that as you pray and wait for your own miracles to happen.

**Loved, loved, loved Meredith, Jacob, Joshua and the team that led us in worship.  Does that girl have energy or what?  Her passion is beyond evident – the love of Christ just shines through her.  So blessed by their gifts and to hear the name of Jesus being lifted high through worship.

**So amazing to see God at work throughout the weekend.  The response to the messages was so moving; to see so many stand but just as many be there to support their brothers and sisters was overwhelming.

**People were saved!  I embraced one of them with tears in my eyes after he told me….we have been praying earnestly for this young man – that God would stir in his heart.  Another miracle – praise God!

**One resounding highlight to all of us as staff was the way – you – our church family stepped up.  We were blown away by your service this weekend, your support and your love.  You were tireless in your efforts and you served with true joy and excellence.  You moved furniture, set up extra chairs, cooked, cleaned, folded bulletins, played with LOTS of busy children, shook hands, hugged, smiled and prayed.  You came early and stayed late.  You just ROCK!  We are SO grateful to God for each one of you and the part you had in making this 10th anniversary celebration weekend to remember.

I know it doesn’t stop here…can’t wait for our next huddle, so we can share the highlights from this coming Sunday :-)

WedWednesdayMayMay16th2012 The iGeneration
byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 3 comments Add comment
Some call them the ‘iGeneration’ – our kids, our youth of today.  Bombarded with more technology than they know what to do with.  They are more savvy than most adults they know.  They are so connected, yet so disconnected.  It causes me to cry out to God daily for Jesus’ speedy return.

Every time I try to gain some momentum on my kids and stay one technological step ahead of them, I find myself 10 steps behind.  Can anyone relate?  Even if I manage to gain some ground – my kids still have to associate with other children, who’s parents/guardians have absolutely NO idea what they’re doing on the internet, on their iPods, BlackBerrys, or PS3s (which has direct access to the internet, in case you didn’t know that little know fact!!).

As Christ-followers, my husband and I have set multiple boundaries in terms of what we watch, and listen to, who we associate with and what games we play.  We regularly creep our kids cell phones and Facebook pages. YES, we have met with resistance to any and all of this at times; YES, it has set us apart from the families in the neighbourhood; and YES, it’s hard!  But it’s a fight worth fighting and never giving up on.  Satan is desperate to consume our children and destroy our families.  “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”  1 Peter 5:8.

In George Barna’s book, Transforming Children Into Spiritual Champions, he tells us that children have their spiritual moorings in place by age 9 and that, by age 13, a person’s spiritual identity is pretty much established.  I can certainly look back on the Sunday school teachers and day camp instructors I had and see the impact they had on my life so many years later!  Get your kids involved in good programs!!

You’ve all heard children referred to as sponges – you don’t have to spend much time with them to know how true that is.  We need to allow them to soak up the truth.  We need to equip them with the full armor of God.  We need to fight for them and then teach them how to fight for themselves.  Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”  How’s that going in your house? Admittedly, we don’t have this nailed down yet.

I am so incredibly thankful to God for my church family and the countless godly influences that my children have in their lives.  We have been able to provide healthy, fun alternatives for our kids through a variety of children’s and youth activities.  They have strong mentors in their lives, who lead by example – and make living for Jesus more attractive to them than living in the world.

In Philippians 4:13, we read, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” and that includes parenting this iGeneration, our precious gifts from God.  Hey, I’d love to hear how you’re equipping your little saints.

Wow – what a wonderful Awana year!  We celebrated with our families last night at our year end awards event.  Lots of ribbons and trophies were handed out to hard working clubbers.  Boy, did these kids memorize a lot of scripture!  Did you know that if clubbers finish three books in the Sparks program and four books in the Truth and Training program they will have memorized 582 bible verses.  Can you see why we love Awana?

Not only did we spend a lot of time working through our handbooks, but our clubbers also became "Kids of Integrity".  Each week they learned what God says about things like: generosity, righteousness, gentleness, self control, patience, joy, humility, forgiveness, attentiveness, faithfulness, perseverance, respect, honesty and contentedness.  We’re thankful to our teachers for their incredible lessons.

Under the expert guidance of our outreach director, our club collected enough in dues each week to support our sponsor child, Michael from Ghana, West Africa.  Our kids love sending letters and gifts to Michael.  Through our Baskets of Joy campaign at Christmas and the support of our families and Harvest small groups, we raised over $800 for orphanages in Haiti and Nigeria.  We also partnered with the Glasgow mission team and raised over $700 for them through our Grand Prix concession and bake sale.  What a blessing!

The most important aspect of our program is pointing kids to Christ and we were thrilled when four of our kids chose Christ as their Lord and Saviour this year. What a privilege to be a part of this life changing decision.

We have an incredible sense of community in Awana. We have friends join us each week from at least nine other churches in the area.  How great that this program brings us all together under one roof for a whole lot of fun and fellowship.

We have over 65 amazing volunteers that love on these kids each week.  They are dedicated, tireless and faithful – huge thanks to each one of you!  There is such joy in serving the Lord and it was evident every Wednesday at Awana.  Our theme verse is

2 Timothy 2:15 -  “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth”.

Our team exemplifies this and how amazing it is that we have the opportunity to train up these kids to love God’s word, live for him and proclaim his truth without apology.

We praise God for what he accomplished in and through this club this year.  To him by glory!

I am jumping-out-of-my-skin excited about Harvest kids camp this summer.  We are incredibly pumped about bringing praise to TCS the week of July 30-August 3.    The Go Fish Guys have designed an incredible program with two objectives in mind:

1. To share the gospel of Jesus Christ

2. To teach the importance of the Bible

Can you tell why we were hooked immediately?  Here’s what Jamie Statema of the Go Fish Guys has to say about the program,

Each day we will focus on an attribute of God and then praise him in response.  So often we hear children’s ministry leaders lament about kids not having a biblical worldview.  Yet the most obvious answer to this oftentimes goes unspoken.  If we want kids to have a high view of Scripture then we need to use our Bibles and use them often!  Scripture is sufficient in all matters and it is so rewarding to see kids excited to use God’s Word.

This totally falls in line with how we think at Harvest.  We want our kids to love God’s Word and rely on it throughout theirs lives as their sword and shield.  We want to claim the truth found in Hebrews 4:12, that "God’s word is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword."

We will accomplish this through incredible lessons, amazing upbeat worship songs, crazy games and super fun crafts.  We have an incredible opportunity to point kids to Christ through camp and we are praying that God will fill TCS will young hearts that need to hear the truth that will change their lives.

What can you do?

  • Get your kids registered (online, at the church office or in Higher Ground)
  • Spread the word - tell your neighbours, family and friends
  • Join in the fun – volunteer
  • Pray big prayers to our BIG God

WedWednesdayAprApril4th2012 Build my church

“I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”.  Matthew 16:18b

That is exactly what God is doing in Harvest world – building his church.  What an incredible blessing it is be a part of it!

Harvest Bible Fellowship is the church-planting ministry of Harvest Bible Chapel that

(1) assesses, trains and equips select men to serve as Harvest senior pastors;

(2) confirms their planting locations;

(3) assists with the development and launch of new Harvest Bible Chapels;

(4) replants existing churches to become Harvest Bible Chapels; and

(5) supports every senior pastor and local church through ongoing equipping throughout the life of their churches.

82 churches have started or transitioned since Harvest Bible Chapel was first established in 1988.  It’s so exciting to hear about eleven more of them launching in 2012:

Los Angeles, California

Fort Wayne, Indiana

Clear Lake, Iowa

Northern Kentucky

Cambridge, Ohio

Greenville South, South Carolina

Fairfax, Virginia

Ometepe Island, Nicaragua

Chisinau, Moldova

Douala, Africa

...and on Easter Sunday – Harvest Traverse City, Michigan is all set to open its doors.  Pastor Doug Long, his wife Christy and their three children are excited to see what God has in store for them.  Remember this faithful servant and his family in your prayers this weekend.

It will be completely incredible to be among staff and volunteers from our family of Harvest churches in April at Harvest University (details here).  To think that we will all be there, with the same vision, the same passion, to worship and glorify our one true King.  I’m excited to see Pastor Jeremy from Harvest Jupiter Beach, who we surfed with in Florida and to re-connect with friends of ours from Harvest Phoenix who will be attending as well.  What an amazing opportunity to gather together as one body, to learn and grow; to sharpen and encourage one another; to re-charge!  I can’t wait to head to Chicago April 22-25 to spend this precious time with our extended Harvest family.   Are you coming?

byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment

Christian radio was my first introduction to strong solid preaching.  Nine years ago, a friend of ours asked me to tune into a program called "Walk in the Word" on Life 100.3. I heard a powerful message from Pastor James MacDonald and not long after that, we started attending Harvest Bible Chapel in Barrie and began this incredible journey with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.

Since then our radio dial is ALWAYS tuned to Life 100.3.  I had no previous experience with Christian music, apart from hymns that I sang in the Presbyterian church I grew up in.  Wow – was I blown away.  I am constantly ministered to by the songs I hear and the programs I love to listen to on "Life".

Our children have grown up listening to Christian music and considering the alternative – I can’t tell you how thankful I am for that alone!  Music is a huge part of kids' lives these days and it’s crazy how they look to artists as role models.  What an incredible blessing to know that my kids can look up a YouTube video of LeCrae, House of Heros or Jamie Grace and not only hear music that rocks, but see strong, solid believers sending messages of God's grace and truth through their lyrics.

Our journey with Life 100.3 ventured down a new path a couple of years ago, when our oldest son was hired to DJ on Thursday and Friday nights.  He has been incredibly blessed by strong mentors that have come alongside him at this radio station.  We are so thankful for their leadership and example.

I also love how we can turn the dial to 98.3 whenever we head to Peterborough to visit relatives and continue to hear our favourite radio station loud and clear.  I am looking forward to the day that we can drive anywhere in Ontario and continue to tune into "Life".

For years we have made it a priority to support Life 100.3 and I’m excited to be able to continue that monthly pledge this week.  Sharathon 2012 begins on March 28 and continues through to March 29.  This provides us all with an opportunity to give back a small portion of what we have received; a chance to bless those who have blessed us. Sharathon donations provide more than one-third of their budget.  Consider your role in this vital ministry and how you can support it.  Be sure to pray for Life 100.3 this week, that God would “do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us”. (Ephesians 3:20)

We were beyond blessed to travel south in February.  My favourite part of every vacation is the time we get to spend together as a family.  No work, no school, no errands to run, no cooking, no cleaning and very little schedule.  Add to that, the incredible opportunity to have a temporary reprieve from the winter weather to completely enjoy the Caribbean sun.  On top of that we get to add amazing family memories….flying, snorkeling, cruising, surfing – oh man – doesn’t all of that just make it harder to re-enter the real world?

Does anyone else have a hard time enjoying the moment without longing to remain in it?  On some level you wish that this WAS your reality.  You allow your mind to wander and start dreaming of a life without snow, without busyness, without responsibility, without heartache and without trials.  By the time this thought process is finished – in your mind…your house is already on the market, you’ve checked out the want ads and real estate for anywhere in the sunny south.  Does this ring true to any one else besides the Coros family?  Admittedly – our thoughts were cruising down that road as we neared the end of our vacation.

Well – God is merciful, gracious and in complete control.  Our last few days in the south were spent in Florida as we had planned to visit Harvest in beautiful Jupiter Beach.  You will NEVER guess what message the Lord had cued up for us to hear.

“Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him.” 1 Corinthians 7:17.   For real??!

Pastor Jeremy preached a strong word entitled "Living a Life of Impact", including these key points:

1.  You are called to live in the place God has assigned you.

2.  The pursuit of change distracts us from a life of impact.

3.  God’s presence transcends your circumstances.

As we listened intently to God’s Word, boy were we challenged with the question, “Are we at rest with where God has put us?" We could easily justify why we would be perfect candidates to move anywhere south of where we are now….I’m sure we could do lots of great things for the Lord in the Bahamas– but that’s not where God has us at the moment. Pastor Jeremy reminded us that a life of true impact is "not us working through God, but God working through us – right where we are."  Regardless of what that looks like, or how hard it is, or how cold it is or how long it takes.  Others will see Christ in us as we walk in obedience and faith right here in Barrie, Ontario…up hills and down hills.

So, are we content? Yes!

Even when it’s hard? – Of course!

Why? Because we trust that God has great plans for us and we are overwhelmed by his continued grace and mercy as we strive to live a life of impact.

Are you?

TueTuesdayFebFebruary14th2012 What is love?
byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 1 comments Add comment
It's Valentine's Day – are you thinking about love?

In 44 years, I've experienced all kinds of love.

The love of a mother who worked tirelessly raising five kids; the love of a father who called his only little girl “princess"; the love for siblings who continue to drive me crazy, but I'd never give up on them; the love of extended family that rekindles with every wedding and funeral; the love of sweet friends who do life with me – regardless of what that looks like.

Then there were the times I thought I was in love before I really knew what it was.  Then I "fell" in love, twice, to the same man, the one I married.  How about a mother's love – the kind that makes you feel like you're going to burst with sheer joy and utter frustration, all at the same time.

I throw the word love around flippantly –  I love orange sorbet and sandy beaches, I love warm socks on cold nights, I love the smell of the ocean and I just LOVE that colour on you!!

About eight years ago, "love" transformed me.  I grew up with the knowledge that God is love and memorized John 3:16 without understanding what it really meant.  When I surrendered my life to Jesus I began to understand what love really was.  I had never experienced this kind before.  Complete and utter unconditional love; no strings attached; abounding in grace and mercy.  I continue to be in awe of his great love for me and how unworthy I am to receive it.  His love also causes me to measure all of the other loves in my life – am I loving others like Jesus loves me? I ought to be!

I love the richness of God's words in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13...

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give away all I have and if I deliver up my body to be burned but have not love, I gain nothing.  Love is patient and kind; love does no envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.  It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, endures all things.  Love never ends.  As for prophesies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.  When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.  When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.  For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.  Now I know in part; then I shall know fully even as I have been fully known.  So now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Instead of asking what is love....I think I need to ask, who is love?  Only Jesus!

If you weren’t able to attend the night of prayer on January 29 – you missed out!  Seriously!

As Pastor Todd followed author Daniel Henderson’s lead (Transforming Prayer); we enjoyed sweet times of worship, singing praises to our heavenly Father and also heard a strong word from John 4.  Our focus was on the lost and our fourth pillar – sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with boldness.  We spent time in groups of four or five praying specifically for those in need of Christ’s forgiveness and the strength to share with them.

Not only was I encouraged by standing corporately with brothers and sisters in Christ, but I was beyond blessed to pray with some of our high school students and hear them pour out their hearts to Jesus.  These teenagers, who are regularly persecuted for their faith, were praying for the souls of those who torment them and for the strength to stand for Christ. Wow!

I know that God has used Transforming Prayer to change my prayer life and allow me to truly seek his face; and it was amazing for me to see this play out practically, in our church family.  What a gift it is to be able to spend time adoring our awesome God and pray back to him, the words he gave us.

Being a visual learner – I love the picture that God paints in Ephesians 6:13-18…”Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.  In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,  praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.

Prayer night allowed me to polish up my armor, tighten my belt and raise my sword even higher– ready for battle; after all, “the fields are white for harvest” (John 4:35b).

Isn’t it obvious??

Well…not really!!  Why is it that, as adults, we so often overlook the obvious.  We miss what’s right in front of our eyes.  We complicate life.

Has something like this ever happened to you...

In my office I have a heavy filing cabinet with a make shift top that I pulled out of the garage.  Every time I open this two drawer cabinet, I have to be careful because both drawers will open and the crazy thing starts tipping over.  A co-worker of mine came to add a file to it one day and I exclaimed, “Be careful…that thing almost killed me this morning” and I mumbled that I’d already put a request for our Deacon of Facilities to come and fix it.  Another staff member was in my office at the time, heard my plight, quickly assessed the situation and promptly moved the heavy cabinet OFF the piece of quarter round it was resting on.  For real????  That’s all it took???  Five months in this office and I totally overlooked the obvious.  Can anyone relate?

Why do I insist on complicating my life?  Why do I search for the answers that I have right in front of me?

Kids aren’t like this!  If you ask a child why we should obey God’s commandments, they’ll tell you…."because God said so. " Or if you ask, how do you know God is real? They’ll answer, "because he just is."

I love how in Matthew 18, Jesus called a child to him as an example for his disciples of “who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And Jesus answered, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.  Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

I’m so thankful that I have the opportunity to spend so much time with children – what a constant reminder that I truly need to keep life simple and not overlook the obvious.  I need to spend more time, crossed legged on the floor, in awe of the world around me, knowing that my Father has me in the palm of his hand.  And I must always remember that "God said so" because "he just is."

byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment

I’m sure you’ve heard these words or uttered this phrase a time or two.  What does it mean?  Google explains that this saying is "used to express anger when you can't tolerate something". I’d agree with that – it usually comes out of my mouth when I’ve “had it up to here with your nonsense”.  I can become highly irritated when my children fight with one another.  I tell them how it grieves my heart when people I love so much hurt one another.  Wow – their demeanor changes when they realize that their actions are affecting someone else.

Yet, how often do I stop and think about how my heavenly Father grieves over my sin and my actions.

I’ve been journeying once again through the Old Testament and find myself sitting proudly on my high horse as I shake my head at the Israelites.  Sheesh, do they do anything but grumble and complain about what they don’t have and whine and cry about what they want???  It’s right at that moment when I’m looking down my nose at others that I hear it  - enough is enough!

Am I not just like them? Do I not find countless opportunities to grumble and complain?  It’s too cold; this doesn’t fit; why can’t we do this; what on earth are they thinking; I just don’t feel like having manna anymore…it’s endless and ridiculous.

It’s so easy to get sucked into the vortex of this world; to jump on the band wagon with everyone else. It feels good to get things off your chest, especially if others feel the same way and you all venture down that road together – your complaints are now justified!

BUT, we are called to be set apart!  What a statement it makes to others when you walk away from gossip; when you choose to see the best in others instead of focusing on their weaknesses; when you don’t give in to grumbling – but wake each morning saying “I’M ALIVE – Praise God for granting me another day”.

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul says, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing,  that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world”.

I want to shine as a light in this dark world, so I need to be ever mindful of the thoughts and intentions of my heart and ensure that I’m Christ focused at all times.  I’m not a New Year’s resolution kind of person, but this year I resolve to say "enough is enough". I need to “rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

All the poor and powerless
And all the lost and lonely
All the thieves will come confess
And know that you are holy
Will know that you are holy

All will sing out, hallelujah
We will cry out, hallelujah

All the hearts who are content
And all who feel unworthy
All who hurt with nothing left
Will know that you are holy

Shout it, go on and scream it from the mountains
Go on and tell it to the masses
That he is God

We will sing out, hallelujah
We will cry out, hallelujah

What images do these lyrics conjure up in your mind?  When Jordan first suggested this song to us for our youth choir, my very first thoughts were of the desolate, the hungry, the impoverished.

The more I listened, contemplated and prayed; the more I realized this song was about me.    I am truly poor and powerless without God – I WAS poor and powerless without God.    I did "feel unworthy"; I was "hurt with nothing left" and now, I KNOW that HE is holy!

How I loved hearing sweet young voices singing, “Go on and scream it from the mountains, go on and tell it to the masses, that he is God”.   How amazing to see youth worshipping and claiming that all “will know that you are holy”.   One day ALL the poor and powerless will bow before the King of Glory and his children will claim that promise – I can only imagine that the tears of joy and thanksgiving will be flowing freely (especially from me).

ThuThursdayNovNovember10th2011 The B-I-B-L-E!
byJeannie Coros Tagged Higher Ground 0 comments Add comment

Oh the B-I-B-L-E,

Yes, that’s the book for me,

I stand alone on the Word of God,

The B-I-B-L-E

BIBLE!

Remember it?  We loved it when Pastor Mike led our Awana kids in this timeless classic during Party with the Pastors.  What a great reminder for our children that the Bible is the most important book ever written.

As Pastor Todd swung his sword last Sunday, and taught us from Hebrews 4, that “the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword”, I was reminded that I should never treat his Word lightly, but with reverence and awe.

I was blessed to be in with the older Awana clubbers during their teaching time last week, when their director Mrs. Hicks shouted out, "Swords up" and one excited child exclaimed, "I love sword drills", as she thrust her Bible up in the air, awaiting the Scripture verse to search for.

Is that how we feel every time we open the Word of God? “I can’t WAIT to hear from the Lord." "I just can’t get enough of it!"

When did that start for you?  Were you taught as a child to love opening your Bible, that it was truly the living Word, that the words were actually God-breathed?

I was teaching in Higher Ground one morning, had just opened in prayer and was ready to get into the Word.  I asked the kids to get their Bibles out so we could search for the passage together. There was one child with their Bible out of about 30 kids.

We all know that children are sponges; they are just waiting to soak up information daily. In children’s ministry at Harvest, we can’t wait to open our Bibles and hear from our great God.  We spend time memorizing Scripture.  We talk A LOT about "storing God’s Word in our heart" (Psalm 119:11) and how we can use Scripture to protect us, to help us when we’re struggling.  We’ve demonstrated that learning the Word of God is truly like putting on armor, complete with a sword and shield!  They get it!  Doesn’t it amaze you how quickly kids memorize?  Let’s not hold back.  Let’s make sure our kids truly understand the gift we’ve been given - the Bible.

I am thankful to be surrounded by strong families, who love God, love their kids and love others.  It’s so evident that you are hungry to hear a word from God after you drop your kids off and head to service, with your Bible tucked under your arm.

Let’s make sure we’re equipping our kids to do the same – if they don’t have a Bible, visit our bookstore, they can hook you up.  Christmas is coming……what a perfect gift!

WedWednesdaySepSeptember28th2011 Let the children come
byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment
But Jesus called them to him, saying, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” (Luke 18:16)

When I was little, I played school every chance I got.  My four brothers humoured me, as long as we headed outside to build forts afterward.  When people would ask me “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  I would ALWAYS say, "A mommy and a teacher."  Little did I know what that would look like in my life.  I had no idea that God had a plan for me, until I surrendered myself to Jesus eight years ago. I became acutely aware that my three children were an incredible blessing from the Lord and it was my job to train them up. Wow – ‘a mommy and a teacher’.

Teaching has taken many forms in my life, however, I have also learned that in order to be an effective teacher you MUST also be a good student. I was blessed to teach the lesson to the Grade 1-3 class this past Sunday. We were studying chapters 6-8 in Judges and learning about how God raised up Gideon to lead the Israelites.  It was incredible to see these children hungry to learn, eager and attentive.  They joyfully pretended to blow their trumpets, smash their clay pots and raise their torches, leading the Israelites to victory over the powerful Midianite army.  We discussed how God used a simple man like Gideon to do incredible things for him.

After our lesson, one sweet young lady in grade 2 prayed for us and for our time together.  I was completely humbled by her unrehearsed, faith-filled, precious words. I started to think about how the children rushed to Jesus, just to be with the Messiah.  They didn’t need to put on their Sunday best, rehearse their lines or get their chores done first.  They didn’t doubt who he was or his power. They didn’t question him, they just wanted to spend time with him.  How often do I miss that?  Am I just as eager to spend time with Jesus?  Do I question his majesty like Gideon?  Do I trust his Word? Do I put my "list" before him?

Sadly, at times, I do! I’m grateful for the beautiful reminder I was given that I need to have the faith and eagerness of a child every day. I need to believe simply because God says so. I need to always be unrehearsed and unashamed.  I love being a "mommy and a teacher" but more than that, I am a perpetual student. I always need to be ready and willing to learn and grow...UNHINDERED, at the feet of Jesus.
TueTuesdaySepSeptember20th2011 Approved Workers Are Not Ashamed!

It's Awana time again. Our amazing team of volunteers is so pumped about the start of another great year starting this Wednesday night. For those of you who didn't grow up in Awana, or are not familiar with our mid-week children's program, let me share with you why we LOVE it!

Awana prayer
That all children and youth throughout the world will come to know, love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

Awana vision
To be a strategic partner with churches and ministries in a global effort to ensure the opportunity for all children and youth to be evangelized and discipled in Christ

Awana mission
To work with our ministry partners in creating and disseminating integrated programs, tools and training that equip leaders to evangelize and disciple children and youth for Christ

Awana values
We will glorify God and serve the body of Christ by committing ourselves to these values.
  • We proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ with clarity and urgency.
  • We commit to God’s Word as our guide and standard.
  • We treat all people as created and loved by God.
  • We maintain a servant heart in all we do.
  • We manage God’s resources with faithfulness and integrity.
  • We pursue excellence as unto the Lord
What does that look like at Harvest Barrie?  Well, we have 56 dedicated volunteers who serve faithfully and tirelessly every week.  Our team leaders shepherd a group of children, as they rotate through worship, exciting games, powerful lessons, and handbook time.  Awana handbooks are jammed packed with truth, that leads them to a greater understanding of God, the Bible and who Jesus is.  Children work at, not only memorizing scripture each week but understanding why they should and how they can apply it to their lives.

Awana is an incredible outreach tool for families.  Children are encouraged to bring their friends, who always receive a warm welcome.  These kids are often from school and the neighbourhood and they love coming back each week to participate in the fun and excitement.   Each year we celebrate with non-Harvest and even unchurched children, who come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.  So grateful to God for these moments!
As a family, we have been blessed by Awana.  It’s amazing to see our kids serving together in the program that they enjoyed so much as clubbers.  They are being shepherded by adults who pour into them each week and are godly examples for them.  It’s incredible to watch them foster relationships with Awana kids and come alongside them in their walk with Christ.  God is at work at Awana, we are thankful to be vessels for him.

Want to know more or perhaps serve in our Awana family?  One of our Awana parents has designed a website specifically for our club which you can access here.   You can register your kids online and find out what’s up and coming this year.  You can also contact Commander Craig at for more information.

Looking forward to Wednesday night…hope to see you there!!

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
TueTuesdaySepSeptember6th2011 Intentionality
byJeannie Coros Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment
“Where did the summer go?”  How many times have you heard that this past week?  By now the children are all happily nestled in their classrooms (ya, right!), teachers are back in the groove and parents are breathing a sigh of relief.

Back to school has always been bitter sweet for me.  I simply LOVE all that summer brings and count it all as extra special blessings from the Lord.  However, as much as I cherish the extra family time, the sun, the beach and the ice cream, I do love to get back into routine as September rolls around.  Back to school symbolizes a fresh start for many, including me.  As I have been working through the book Transforming Prayer this year and looking into God’s Word this summer, one word continues to resound in my thoughts….intentionality.  I need to be MORE intentional.  I certainly need to be much more intentional in my prayer life, as the author describes.  I can’t wait to study this book more closely in small group this fall.   It has already reduced me to tears on countless occasions, as I learn to draw nearer to our great God.

I need to be intentional about spending time with God – as life gets busier over the next few weeks, I need to set this critical time aside each day and savour it. My words, my actions and my thoughts, all need to be intentional.  In everything I do and say, I need to be pleasing to the Lord – that’s not easy for me.  It’s what I desire, but I can give in too easily to my emotions. I need to be intentional about my role as a wife and mother.  My husband and children are gifts from God, I need to be so careful to ensure that my priorities are in order and that I am truly my husbands helper.  I have come to realize that you always need to be a few steps ahead of your children or you are left in the dust.  I need to be intentional about parenting my kids ALL THE TIME and not just when it’s convenient for me.

I certainly need to be intentional about the Great Commission.  I need to always be ready to give an account for the joy I have in my life and share the great news of our mighty Saviour with others.  My walk with the Lord needs to be an example; especially to the sweet children I have the privilege of shepherding on a weekly basis.  The Lord has blessed me immensely with my position at Harvest, and I pray that I will never take lightly the task that is before me.  I need to be intentional!

God was intentional when he created me, “for I know the plans I have for you, declares he Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).  Oh, how thankful I am that he is sovereign and in control – I need to continue to step up INTENTIONALY and make every moment count – for his glory alone!

Well….this Sunday, August 28, you’ll find the beach in the field at Timothy Christian School from 2-4 p.m. All Higher Ground families are invited to join the SonSurf Beach Team for a time of fun, games, fellowship and ICE CREAM!

We are excited to share what your kids have been learning all summer. We were blessed with an incredible team of volunteer youth who worked tirelessly each week in many capacities. Some led a great time of worship as we jumped and shouted for Jesus. Our drama team provided entertainment and presented important lessons on who Jesus is and why we should ‘join up’ with him. Others led exciting games, fun crafts and teams.

Can I just tell you what a joy and pleasure it is to work alongside these kids? I regularly witness them pouring into God’s Word, sharing their gifts with others, joyfully worshipping, praying together and serving with gladness. I think about them often, as I read through a book entitled What about me? - The spiritual crisis that threatens to overwhelm Canada’s children by Rob Lukings. The author talks about the fact that this current generation of kids is unlike any we have seen before. They are far more consumer oriented; they live in a world of incredible technological advances and are accustomed to a variety of family arrangements. The author feels that, more than ever, Satan has launched an all out war on children and I completely agree with him. As it says in 1 Peter 5:8, “your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour’”. With this in mind, I feel blessed to be a part of a church that preaches the Word of God boldly and unapologetically. Strong family values are upheld because they are important to God and we are all about bringing glory to him alone.  This is what our children are experiencing; in Higher Ground, Awana, Youth and in each other’s homes. We are rising up against the attacks and equipping our children. I see the fruit of that each Sunday morning.

Our children are so vulnerable and impressionable and we need to be more than intentional about parenting them, especially this generation. So thank you, parents, for partnering with us, as we seek to lead and guide them each Sunday. Thank you to parents of our youth, for supporting them, and allowing the Lord to use them so effectively for his service.

We look forward to hanging out with you this Sunday afternoon and celebrating the God-given blessing of family and fellowship.

See you at the beach!!

It’s no secret that one of my favourite places on the planet is the beach.  Ahhhhh, the warm sand between my toes, hot sun on my skin and the sound of lapping water on the shore.

So, it was only natural that we brought the ‘beach’ to Higher Ground this summer.  Under the astute direction of our amazing summer interns Jacquie and Emilie, a beach scene was created in our large group room, camp shirts were designed, drama and worship teams were assembled and lessons were organized. Each week Harvest kids and friends have been enjoying skits, fun new worship songs, playing games and making creative beach crafts.  The most incredible part of our SonSurf Beach Bash has been the lessons taught each week by Devyn and Jacquie.  They have been sitting down with our kids, opening their bibles and sharing the ‘big answers’ to their ‘big questions’ about Jesus, who he is and why they need him.

I was blessed to teach the lessons in Jacquie’s absence the past couple of weeks and once again I believe I learned more than the kids did. I was teaching from John 13, where Jesus washed the disciples feet at the feast of the Passover and leading up to their memory verse, John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”; just as I’m getting caught up in the ‘teacher aspect’ of thinking that my job is to stand up and impart wisdom and truth to young minds, who should be sitting attentively and listening to every word…I am struck.  I am hit by the verses, “…if I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one anothers feet.  For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done to you.  Truly, truly, I say to you a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” (John 13:14-16).

I was reminded LOUDLY that I was there as a servant.  It had nothing to do with me and what I had to offer and everything to do with bringing glory to God by following his lead. Oh how easily I can get caught up in my own stuff and miss what God is doing right in front of me.  I am so thankful for these times that he reminds me of when he humbled himself to wash the dreadfully dirty, stinky feet of his dear friends and how I need to do the same.
Seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
