This summer I chose to work through the book of James during my quiet times in the morning. We are now just days away from the end of summer holidays, and I am still not done. The Bible seems to do that to us doesn't it? I mean, how often can you read just a couple verses, and that is all you need to keep you thinking the whole entire day. This passage did that exact thing for me.

"My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you." (James 1:19-21)

How often in our lives does that moral filth creep in? How often do we allow our quick tempers to grab a hold of our lives, how often do we not stop and listen to the things going on around us, I was honestly rocked to the core when I read this verse. I have continued to go over and over it countless times during the summer, and it continues to occur to me how the Lord uses his Word to shape and effectively destroy our pride, to make us righteous in his sight. The Bible is filled with amazing things and it astonishes me when I can't take time out of my day to read it! A very influential person in my life once told me, "God gives you 24 hours in a day. How many hours do you give back to him?" Think about that, God granted us 24 hours, 365 days, 12 months, and we fill that time with things that will have no eternal value!

This passage has challenged me greatly over the summer. It challenged me to think about my time, to make sure I have time to connect with God. Just like Pastor Jon talked about recently, we need to take time to pray and focus on the God who gave us these 24 hours to glorify him. So I encourage you to think about that too.  How can we glorify God in the 24 hours that we've been given today?

Hey I am Jordan Coros, intern/slave to Mike Armstrong this summer.

So Mike asked me to do his blog posts for the time that he is on vacation and that got me all nervous. I sat at my desk, thinking over and over, "what am I going to talk about, what am I going to talk about, what am I going to talk about!?" Just as I was racking my brain to find something, a song came on my iTunes that made me stop.

The song is Closer by Anberlin, some of you might have heard of it, some of you, maybe not. In the second verse it says, "Do you accept me? When we both know my past. Am I keeping safe distance? Pushing you arms length away. Am I keeping safe distance? Oh it's you that feels betrayed." Now if you’re not into Christian Rock, this might not be the song for you, but it has been on my favorites list for about 2 months now and I have heard those lyrics so many times, but never really clued in. But they are so true aren't they? How gracious God is to us! Even though he knows our past he is quick to forgive us. But still we push him away; still we keep a distance between him and us because we think we aren't good enough. Can you only imagine how that makes our Lord feel? He created us! He LOVES us! He must feel betrayed!  You can check out the whole song here.

In keeping with the music theme, our worship time the last few Sundays have been amazing, haven't they? It’s incredible every week, but the messages Mike has brought, it seems that there is an extreme passion, an urge to respond to what we heard and a longing for Christ to meet us. I heard someone say in regards to the song Forever Reign, "Every time I sing that song, I get a vision in my head of Christ just standing there, in all his glory, with open arms, ready to accept me, me! Of all people, he wants me!" Isn't that an incredible thought? No matter what your sins are, no matter how messed up your past may have been; Jesus is standing there, with open arms, ready for you! "Do you accept me? When we both know my past." Truth is, yes he does! He is waiting for me, he is waiting for you, will you run to him? Or keep him arms length away?
