We should be coming prepared every week as we gather to worship Christ together, to hear the proclamation of God’s Word and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ, but the reality is we often don’t.

We’re usually finishing dressing the kids in the car on the way to church, swinging through a Timmy’s drive through five minutes before the start of the service, or concluding the final point in your argument with your spouse about who knows what.

Life is busy, no doubt about that. If you find that you've got lots of free time, try having longer quiet times!

We NEED to make time for the important things though and coming prepared as we enter the house of the Lord should be high on that list. Psalm 95:6 says, “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!”

How great would it be to worship with a group that is all in this place, ready to kneel and humble ourselves in the presence of the Lord? First time guests would be blown away, that much is for sure. Lives would be impacted simply upon the sight of so many people engaging right off the bat, knowing that in the grand scheme of things, they are so small in the presence of the LORD our God and grateful for all he has done in their lives.

I encourage all of you to take time to listen to the worship package and read through the passage that Pastor Todd will be preaching on as you head into every Sunday. You will not regret it as you come feeling prepared and in a place to worship the Lord.

This week there is lots of prep that we should be doing, as we think of all that’s ahead. The death, the burial and the resurrection are a lot to take in. I want to encourage you to check out a resource from Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago called:

THEDAYJESUSDIED.COM

There’s scripture, videos, music to help you prepare your heart for what we are about to experience this weekend. Parents, I encourage you too look through it first and find some stuff you can do with your family to show them the importance of this weekend.

Looking forward to remember and celebrating with you this weekend.

You are loved,

Jordan

Easter is one of my favourite times of the year. It's a time that we get to celebrate our risen Saviour who lived a perfect life and died for our sins, only to be raised from the dead three days later!

I want to ask that you join us in celebrating that truth this year in the Harvest Easter choir.

I know singing doesn't come easy to many of us, and standing in front of lots of people isn't exactly the most comfortable thing.

We aren't looking for a bunch of "pro singers" in this choir, rather a group of people who LOVE Jesus Christ and are eager to show it and celebrate the resurrection Easter Sunday through singing and rejoicing with the heavens as one voice.

Easter and Christmas are the two times of the year where we generally have more unsaved people in the congregation than any other Sunday. Their first impression of church is the music. It's the first thing that happens after they've taken their seat. I've talked to so many of those people who are impacted by the love and joy they see in the worship musicians and those in the choir. Why not play a part in that this year? Think also about your unsaved friends and family who may come out to church if you invite them to watch you in the choir this year!

I know there are a lot of you who are on the fence with choir, and I would urge you to reach out with that calling. Don't make excuses, just start doing it.

We make it as manageable as possible, there are only three rehearsals before the dress rehearsal this year. We meet at Timothy Christian School in the music room.

If you feel that knot in your gut after reading this, get a hold of me and get plugged in!

You Are Loved.

What an amazing night last night...

Those of you that were able to make it out to our prayer night would surely agree. We gathered together as the body of Christ, young and old lifting high the name of Jesus in worship and prayer. We went through Ephesians 3:14-21.

We started off with quiet individual prayer as the worship team sang a song over everyone. We then moved on to more worship and an open mic time where we heard so many stories of people stepping out in faith to talk to strangers about Jesus, trusting in him to provide them with a job against the odds, trusting him through anxiety and depression.

So great to hear the testimonies of students who were impacted so heavily this past weekend by the saving power of Jesus Christ. Their eyes were open to idols they had set before him, things they needed to get rid of in their lives and taking a stand for Jesus despite what others may think. It was such a blessing to have the privilege of leading worship for the students last weekend and seeing the Lord move like that.

We closed off the night praying with the different generations in the room. We had the students break into their small groups and the adults joining them. We encouraged everybody to pray out loud, calling out the the Lord! Such an amazing sound to hear.

I was just so blessed last night by everything. Really want to encourage you to make it out to our next worship and prayer night if you haven't before.

Before then, I want to encourage you to come out to our 24 hours of prayer starting this Saturday at 1 p.m. Sign up for a spot HERE and join us as we call out to God together!

You Are Loved.

Not sure how everyone else is holding up, but the fall/winter season seems to be beating me in the health department this year… It seems it’s been quite some time since I’ve really felt 100%

In this time, the Lord has seemed to be reminding me that he is in control.

Despite not feeling great, I’ve still been leading lots of worship and running rehearsals as normal. Each and every time I’m blown away by the Lord's power and presence in the room.

This previous weekend, I had the privilege of leading worship at HBC York Region. I woke up, Sunday morning, after an awful night's sleep feeling worse than the night before. I could barely talk let alone sing…I couldn’t think of a worse scenario being away from my home church and feeling 40% of the capabilities I might normally feel on a healthy Sunday…and with no chance to redeem myself I thought!

It was in that moment when I caught myself. This isn’t about me at all. The band and myself had the privilege of leading people into the presence of the Lord and I was reminded of 2 Cor 12:19 “My power is made perfect in weakness”.

I was feeling very weak. During the rehearsal my voice just kept getting worse. I’d love to tell you that by the time we started the 9 a.m. service it was back at full strength, but it certainly had gotten more hoarse…the worship however, was just starting up. The people engaged right off the bat, and the Lord showed up in a HUGE way. I sang as much as I could, but was just so encouraged hearing the people sing so loudly to their King, seeing their hands raised in fervent and passionate worship to him.

Just so blown away at the work of the Lord. If he can use a 40% version of us to accomplish great things, why would we not put 100% of our hope and faith in him?

Worship, yes the worship guy is doing another worship blog.

Hopefully at this point many of you have either started, or even finished, your Vertical Church book. If you attend Harvest regularly you have one, so get a jump start on it!

I was pumped to start it and the first chapter I had read in the book was the worship chapter titled, "Unashamed Adoration". It was chock-full of so much for us all to live by. It looked at worship in many churches in the past, present, and our eternity in heaven, where the worship will be far better than anything we've ever experienced, or will ever experience here on earth.

It touches on some things that we at Harvest really aim for in our worship times.  We know that worship is so much more then just singing, but the main four categories that we focus on are what we as a worship team really strive for week after week.

1. Vertical - Are the times we spend in worship focused on us or on God? We hope every single week our eyes and our hearts are turned to him, knowing that he is the reason we've gathered, he is the breath in our lungs and our loving Father.

2. Simple - Are we making it easy for people to understand, without sacrificing the soundness of it? Hymns are great, we sing them here from time to time, but can tend to really weigh heavy in our heads and not in our hearts.

3. Emotive - Vertical worship needs to engage our emotions, not just fill our heads with truth. We don't want to have a "shoulders up" worship experience.

4. Physical - The Bible states, "Worship with all your strength". That is with our voice loud, eyes focused, head up, hands raised, legs sometimes knelt, feet moving.

These are the four things we really focus on as a team, and by no means have we arrived there yet. As a church, we must strive towards this worship that we see laid out in Scripture, it is, after all, what we'll be doing for eternity!

Cheers.

Harvest Bible Chapel, it's right on our tails! Christmas time snuck up once again and we didn't even see it coming!

I love Christmas, the smells, the fellowship times, and the MUSIC! Speaking of which, we have a choir for our Christmas Eve services, December 23 and 24 and we want all the voices we can get. Whether you can sing or not, we want you if you're passionate about lifting up the name of the Lord!

Psalm 100:1-2 says, “Make a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!

I want to challenge you with that. The Bible speaks so many times of singing, and so many of us tend to be afraid of it. It’s what we have to look forward to in eternity, worshiping our Lord forever and ever. Let’s get a jump-start on it now!

Rehearsals are every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. while the youth are meeting at TCS. So if you have kids in youth it's easier than ever to be a part of it! Here is the schedule below:

         October 25, 7 p.m.

         November 8, 7 p.m.

         November 22, 7 p.m.

         December 6, 7 p.m.

                     December 20, 7 p.m.

Many people have asked me where some of the new songs we are playing at Harvest Barrie are coming from - songs like Open Up The Heavens, Light Shine In, Not For A Moment, and a few more.

I’m excited to tell you that these are songs that are coming out of our very own fellowship through Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago. These gifted songwriters and worship leaders have really done an amazing job writing songs for the church globally. We are so privileged to be able to sing them before a lot of other churches out there since the CD is yet to be released. The Lord has used these songs in such an amazing way at Harvest Barrie. We’ll let you know how to get a copy soon!

This week we’re singing “Not For A Moment”.  I encourage you to read through the lyrics of the verse and just see how the Lord has reached out to you this week.

You were reaching through the storm

Walking on the water, even when I could not see

In the middle of it all

When I thought you were a thousand miles away

Not for a moment did you forsake me

Blessings.

ThuThursdayJulJuly5th2012 Why we worship
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment

Came across a great article recently by Pastor Mark Driscoll regarding why we worship. He states:

The question is never, “Am I a worshiper?” But rather, “Who am I worshiping? What am I worshiping? How am I worshiping?” Here’s a hint. Track your time, thoughts, energy, and money. Where is it honestly going?

Check it out below, and let the Lord put on your heart what you may be putting on a pedestal.

Why We Worship.

Cheers.

The Lord is doing some amazing things in our church and within the Harvest Bible Fellowship churches. God is at work and Harvest U was such an amazing reminder of that.

We are so blessed that we are living in a country where we are free to worship the Lord. We so often take that for granted. The little oppression that we get doesn’t even compare to what happens at some Harvests around the world.

This next Sunday we are privileged to have Cristian Barbosu in the pulpit to celebrate 10 years at Harvest yet again. Cristian is a powerful and passionate speaker. Come prepared to worship and hear from different tribes and nations ; )

I really want to encourage you to prepare your hearts as we come together in worship and sing to the King. We have 60 people coming back from HU (additional HU features below) that just experienced 2,000 people together singing with all they have holding nothing back. Let’s make this the new norm at Harvest Barrie!

Prepare your hearts and minds for this Sunday!

Blessings,

Jordan

PS.  Here are some additional photos from Harvest U.  Notice that Pastor Todd got to preach on ping pong ball night.  You'll also see the award presented to commemorate his year as Senior Pastor of the Year.

ThuThursdayMarMarch22nd2012 Looking for good music?
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment

It’s so often that I get asked by people in our congregation about music. Makes sense right? They ask:

“Where can I find some new stuff that isn’t stale?”

“What’s a CD that what would encourage me this month with…?”

“Who was that song by that you played this week?”

People love music, but when it comes to finding new stuff sometimes we don’t know how to stay “on top” of it.
You're in luck…I love listening/playing/writing music and the way the Lord uses it in our lives is so amazing to me. So today I’m going to give you a few recommendations of stuff that the Lord’s been using in my personal life and I can’t stop listening to it! (no particular order)

Passion - White Flag: The Passion team leads conferences of 40,000+ people, and this CD is from one of their events. The Passion team includes a few different worship leaders, Chris Tomlin/Matt Redman/David Crowder/Charlie Hall/Christy Nockels/Kristian Stanfill, so there are a great variety of tunes on this CD. If you’re a fan of any of those artists, get this record.

Paul Baloche- The Same Love: Paul Baloche wrote a ton of songs that we sing at church, Hosanna (Praise Is Rising), Your Name, Glorious, We Are Saved, and the list could go on. This is Paul’s latest release, and is very cross focused. The word pictures Paul paints are beautiful, and he collaborated with so many amazing artists on it, that there is also a great variety of flavours if you will. Single available now.  Full album coming to iTunes Canada soon. Currently available at The Treasure House.

All Sons & Daughters- Season One: You would recognize this duo from some songs, which we have done as specials every so often. They are a talented group, with a more subtle approach to their music. They collaborated with Paul Baloche on his new one, and are just so gifted as songwriters and worship leaders. If you like music that isn’t so “rocky or loud” this is the record for you.

The City Harmonic - I Have a Dream (It Feels Like Home): Is a CD a can’t stop listening to, I wouldn’t call it a “worship album” per say, but it is certainly one that is full of songs that bring glory to our King. They have a bit of a southern flare to them; their rock style is just so easy to listen to. They also have some more ballad type songs on here that are just beautiful.

Bryan & Katie Torwalt - Here On Earth: This is a CD that is a breath of fresh air to me. Another unconventional approach to some great worship songs. This record is from the Jesus Culture label, so if you’ve listened to Jesus Culture (Your Love Never Fails/One Thing Remains) you will most definitely enjoy this!

I really hope you find an artist here that you enjoy as much as I do, if you ever have any music questions let me know! I’d love to do coffee and talk about it.

Blessings,

Jordan

ThuThursdayMarMarch1st2012 Hymns
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 5 comments Add comment

Hymns?

“Why don’t we sing more hymns? “

“Why do we sing any hymns at all?”

“What is a hymn?”

All of the above, and more, are questions I’ve heard in my time as a worship leader. Lots of people in our congregation grew up in traditional churches where hymns were the only songs being sung. They remember someone heading up to the pipe organ, and having them turn to page 256 in their hymnal. The songs would tend to have a lot of old English and funny wording at times.

But when we really stop and think of what most of these hymns are saying, it’s amazing the way they’re proclaiming the truth of our Lord and what he’s done for us. They tend to do it in a way that we just don’t hear any more.  To answer one of the questions posed above, hymns can be defined as:

1: a song of praise to God

2: a song of praise or joy

3: something resembling a hymn

When we look at that definition, why would we want to keep all of these great songs of truth out of our church?  If you’ve been in a worship service at Harvest, you know that our worship is comprised of mostly newer songs. Psalm 96:1 says, “Sing a new song to the Lord” we are by no means going to argue with that! That is why we aren’t a church comprised of a ton of hymns.

However, in attending a few of our worship services, you’ll also notice that there is often a hymn in the worship package, a song from our past, a song of reverence for our King. The trouble with hymns sometimes, is that a lot of people can get lost in the “older” feel and wording of it and lose focus on what we are really singing about.  We get our “opinion goggles” on and can’t see the beauty in what we are singing.

Recognizing that a lot of these hymns are lyrically amazing, and pure adoration of the Lord, we are aiming to have a whole worship set comprised of them in this next month or so. I really encourage you to be ready for worship every week. But especially when it’s different in style, we really need to focus and let the attributes of God transcend our personal preference in music.

Excited to worship with you! Prepare for the organ : )

WedWednesdayFebFebruary22nd2012 Worship Architects
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 1 comments Add comment

Quite often I receive comments or questions on the different “looks and feels” to the worship portion of our service. Why were the drums out of the cage? Why wasn’t there backgrounds on the lyrics? I recently came across the article below, by a fellow Harvest worship leader. The article is very well written and explains so much of what we see on a given Sunday at Harvest Barrie. It really helps to answer why we do things the way we do. Why there are different set-ups when it comes to the team, and why the way the stage looks is different week to week as well. Check it out below and see what the Scripture has to say about worship arts!

WORSHIP ARCHITECTS

Art can be an elusive topic. What is it? Who is it for? Why do we need it? But imagine a world where there’s no soundtrack as you drive down the highway, where there are no Friday night movies, and where uniform buildings line the streets of every city. That world quickly becomes utilitarian, and the people in it lose a fundamental avenue of relating to one another.

When art is lost, culture is lost. The same is true with the culture of the church. The Bible is more than a list of practices and a moral code to follow; it’s a relationship with a God who speaks in stories, pictures, and songs. The role of the artist in the church is to tell and retell those stories.

Why Art?

The question of why we create art should be easy for the church to answer. The first ten words of the Bible make it clear that God is Creator. By definition, an artist is someone who creates or produces aesthetic works. The universe—of all things—is not a bad example of such a creation! It’s only a few verses later (Genesis 1:26) that God describes people as created in his image. In the most basic ways, we were created to create.

As we look at what that means for an arts ministry in the local church, I would add that we were created to re-create. That is, to retell the story of who God is to our generation. God uses story and metaphor as the primary avenue to reveal himself to his people. It’s not a list. It’s not a memo. It’s certainly not a formula to follow. It’s a story, and it’s an opportunity to look at the truth of Scripture time and time again with fresh eyes.

Jeremy Begbie, professor and director of Duke Initiative for Theology and the Arts at Duke Divinity School, says the work of the artist is “something like revelation. What is revealed has been there all the time, but it has gone unnoticed in our humdrum everyday experience. It needs the sensitivity of the artist to bring it to light.” The church must ask itself; why wouldn’t we use art to share with others who God is, what he has done, and what he is doing right now in our midst?

In the worship department at my church, we see ourselves as storytellers. We’re musicians, filmmakers, designers, and administrators, but we all work with the same focus: telling God’s story. It’s about making the gospel known to our generation. In the same way that art shapes our culture, artistic expressions of worship shape the culture of our churches each weekend. This should be exciting to us as local church leaders. Arguably, art is the most effective platform to connect our culture with the Creator. It needs to be creative. It needs to be Christ-centered. And, if we want it to affect our culture at all, it needs to be excellent.

Art as Architecture

Architects shape the spaces in which we live and work. Both inside and out, we often take these spaces, where we spend the majority of our time, for granted. Though architects have no influence on the substance of the meetings that will take place in the environments they design, they do control how that environment functions, feels, and facilitates the needs of their client. What if we started to see ourselves as worship architects? For worship leaders and arts ministry leaders the need is apparent: people need to meet with Jesus. We really have no influence on the outcome of our weekly gatherings. That’s the work of the Spirit. What we do have influence over is the environment in which that work takes place.

When we start to see art as a highway for God’s people to express worth, honor, and adoration to their Creator, it becomes work that reignites passion for God’s people. In doing so, we need to, as Rory Noland says, “stop seeing ourselves as half artist, half leader. We are full-time artists and full-time leaders.” We do not create art for art’s sake. We create art that must ascribe worth to the Father. That is worship. As worship architects, we design the structure. As leaders, we usher people inside.

Why should the church spend time, money, and staff resources to create art? We invest in the arts so our generation will not lose the essential role of retelling the story of who God is and what he has done with fresh eyes. Psalm 96 says to sing a new song to the Lord. Why don’t we sing a song of God’s present, living, and active power? As artists in the church, let’s become worship architects, not manipulating or programming time with God, but facilitating an environment for the Holy Spirit to move among us and the name of Jesus to be elevated.

ThuThursdayFebFebruary2nd2012 Do Not Be Anxious
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment

Matthew 6:25

Have you ever thought about what it really means to not be anxious about your life? These are the very words of Jesus to you today! I’ve been anxious in my life about a lot of things like where’s my next __________ (fill in the blank); what am I going to do if ____________ (fill in the blank); or what happens if ____________ (fill in the blank). I have to be honest with you and say I hate living like this, don’t you? Crazy thing is Jesus is telling us in the passage mentioned above that we shouldn’t worry about anything. Really? Nothing Lord?! Okay, so if that’s true I must be doing something wrong, but what?

Later in the passage Jesus gives us a clue and says, “…your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” He goes further and says that I must seek first after my relationship with God. Doesn’t that seem so simple? God is saying work on your relationship with me and I’ll take care of all you need, don’t worry about that.

So, let me ask you. What does it look like to seek the Lord with all you have? Stop! Pray right now and ask the Lord what it looks like with your skin on it to seek him with your life. Now, write some of those things down and begin praying them back to the Lord! Try putting those things into practice today.

Easter is one of my favourite times of the year. Celebrating our risen Saviour is such an amazing time!

Psalm 100:1-2 says, "Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness come into his presence with singing."

We always go big with our worship on Easter Sunday. We celebrate with singing to the Lord a joyful noise. We love to do it with a HUGE choir.

Yes, this is a shameless choir plug! If you love to worship the Lord with singing, this is your year. Choir is starting up soon and we'd love to have you involved!

The more the merrier! Email me at jdonald@harvestbarrie.ca for more info. Remember that it's not all about your voice, but your heart!

Hope to see you there!
ThuThursdayJanJanuary19th2012 Music Review
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 1 comments Add comment
Another musical post by the worship director!

I've heard a lot of people say recently that they want to listen to more worship music but don’t know where to find it. Well here you go! I’m going to give you my top listens this past month or so and I trust that you will find something you like.

These are the CD’s that really minister to me both creatively and spiritually, songs and bands that strive to glorify God in all that they do. Great models for us in trying to grow in our worship of our Creator this year! These will be in no particular order.

For The Honor - Elevation Worship

Elevation Worship put this record out late last year. They are the worship ministry at Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. The CD has 17 tracks of Spirit filled worship. This CD also features the song “Give Me Faith”, a song that has ministered to our congregation over the past few months in an amazing way. If you like the song “Give Me Faith” you are bound to like this CD. They really have a diverse sound but tend to be in the rock genre for the most part.

Give Us Rest - David Crowder Band

David Crowder is a very well known name. The band has been around for years putting out records that minister to congregations around the world. They had announced last year that they would be done as a band after one more release. Well here it is, and they certainly went out with a bang! This is hands down my favourite David Crowder Band record. All of their albums tend to have great, but different feels. This one has a little bit of everything in it, from the folk sound to the rock. It’s a two CD release, 34 tracks, and you’re bound to get into some!

Reason To Sing (No. 2) - All Sons & Daughters

All Sons & Daughters is a band I’ve referenced quite a bit. They recently put out this E.P. as a follow-up to their last one “Brokenness Aside (No. 1)” featuring the song “All The Poor and Powerless” (the one our youth choir did for Christmas). This band has such a unique sound, very chill and pretty. The lyrics are very thought through and paint such beautiful pictures of our Saviour. Certainly check this one out if you're into more indie/chill music.

Jesus Culture Awakening: Live From Chicago - Jesus Culture

Live from where?!? No, I don’t just like this because it’s live from Chi-Town (although it helps…); this is a record that is so…Jesus Culture. I know that sounds silly, but they just have their own sound. Their guitar tone itself is unique to them, I love it. Jesus Culture’s version of “Your Love Never Fails” is one that we do in our congregation quite often. This record has a very “arena rock” feel to it, lots of big anthem songs that bring glory to the King. The opening track “Awaken Me” is my favorite so far, a great start to the record. There are 16 tracks on it total, a few of them featuring other worship leaders.

Rich & Poor - Robbie Seay Band

You may remember this band came out with the song called, “Song of Hope”. If you haven’t heard that song, certainly make time to check it out. This record has a very different feel than that song, but is still amazing. Rich & Poor is a laid back release, some good rock songs on it for sure, but takes a quieter approach. Lots of acoustic guitars and strings on it.

Hymns IV - Page CXVI

We don’t do hymns very often, but when we do they are usually based off this band's version. Page CXVI is a band that has put out four records full of hymns, done up in a more contemporary way. All of their releases are great, but this last one is certainly my favourite. We did their version of “Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus” a couple Sundays back as a close to our service. If you love hymns with a nice “indie” feel to them, be sure to get this record, songs full of truth indeed.

I Have a Dream (It Feels Like Home) - The City Harmonic

This is a great record that has a bit of a “southern rock” feel at times. My favourite track on it is, “Holy (Wedding Day)”, it’s a piano driven song till the end. A song about the price Christ paid for us, and his holiness. Another track I love is a re-release from their old record called “Manifesto” a huge rock anthem full of truth about of great God, the song paints such a clear gospel presentation which is part of the reason I love it!

Anyway, hope you find something on here that you can get into and really connect with. Worship is key to our walk with Christ, so make sure you're filling your head with music that glorifies him!

Blessings.
ThuThursdayJanJanuary5th2012 New Years Resolutions
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 1 comments Add comment

“I plan to get into shape!”

“I need to read the whole Bible this year!”

“I want to find a new job with better benefits!”

How many times have we heard these cliché New Year’s resolutions? Quite honestly now, how many times have we said them? I know in my recent months of marriage I’ve packed on a few pounds…so I may or may not be resolving one of the above things…that’s neither here nor there though!

These goals are all so vain at times. The heart behind it is what makes them genunie. I was reading just the other day how many people get gym memberships in January, and by February or March have already thrown in the towel and quit going! It’s about running a sure race! These resolutions I listed above are all great, but we can’t put it on ourselves to go through them alone.

The things above are great things; why is it that we wait till the new year to put them into play? There’s something about that fresh start isn’t there? One thing I’m always seeking, this year again, is growing into an even more intimate relationship with the Lord. This isn’t something that I want to die out in March though; it’s something I want to continue in for the next 40-50 years!

One of my favourite passages of scripture is 2 Timothy 4:7 which says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” It’s a challenge to me every time I read it. To finish strong is something I strive for in everything, especially when it comes to my relationship with Christ. Every new year is a fresh start to remind me that I need to finish this year refined and closer to the Lord. No matter the circumstances, there may be some challenges coming my way. Maybe it’s something similar to the year before, or maybe this year it’s not so bad or it may be worse. Whatever the case may be, we want to finish strong in all that we do because Christ asks the best from us.

ThuThursdayDecDecember29th2011 Birthdays

Today is my birthday…

I do not like birthday’s too much…they make me feel a bit awkward how people feel obligated to congratulate me for surviving another year.

As if I had a huge hand in that?

Thank you LORD for another one! I am super grateful!

Every year of life I’m given is a chance to look back and see how I’ve used the time that the Lord’s given me. It’s because of Jesus that I’m alive; have I made that apparent this year? I wish that it was apparent all the time, but the truth is there is so much time wasted on ourselves.

How many people have I shared Christ with outside of church?

How many people have seen Christ in me by the way I’ve lived my life?

These are big questions! Now don’t feel that I don’t celebrate my birthdays! I just really want to aim bigger this year and as my birthday tends to come hand in hand with the New Year, I try to set some goals.

One of those goals is speaking to at least one person about Christ every month. That’s 12 people. Seems easy right? Let’s make it a challenge then! Surprising how difficult it can really be.

It’s a start small goal so I recommend it to you all.

Use 2012 to grow the Kingdom of God!

WedWednesdayNovNovember30th2011 CHRISTMAS MUSIC!
byJordan Donald Tagged Christmas 2 comments Add comment

It certainly looks like Christmas. The snow is piling up outside of my window as I write this now! I’m starting to see more and more commercials for toys on television as the days draw closer, and all the Christmas lights seem to be making their yearly appearance!

If you step into the Donald household, it may not quite look like Christmas, but it’s sounded like Christmas for about the past month. We both love Christmas music. When Roxie and I listen to it we can’t help but be happy! She appreciates my singing around this time of year, generally…

Christmas music can be both a great thing and a terrible thing in my opinion. I love the classic Christmas songs, but when it’s the time of year when we should be focusing on Jesus Christ and we are singing about Santa and Rudolph I’m not in love with that. I don’t think it’s wrong to listen to them, but there needs to be a good balance!

Two albums that are playing non-stop, Christ centred, Christmas music in our house are last year's North Point Christmas album, and The David Crowder Band album “Oh for Joy” released just a month ago. These albums are both so well done musically, with newer arrangements on all the classic songs and also glorifying to our Lord. They focus on the real meaning of this time of year, and we so often need to be reminded of that.

If you're looking for a good Christmas CD, or two… check both of these out on iTunes!

TueTuesdayNovNovember15th2011 Elephant Room
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 2 comments Add comment
A lot of you may have already heard about the Elephant Room from last year. It was an awesome time that I was privileged to witness live in Chicago. Elephant Room is a discussion that goes on between seven different ministry leaders, most of whom come from different backgrounds and denominations. Their churches are all different in size, location, ways of doing ministry and even some of their theology.

In the Elephant Room, some controversial questions are brought up. There are blunt conversations that are mainly ones that “you never thought you’d hear”, all of which are moderated by James MacDonald and Mark Driscoll. They are geared to help us think through different things, really rattle our cages and step outside of our comfort zones.

The conversations are about the most Christ honouring ways to build a church.  The goal is unity, however we know that not all parties will agree with one another. Unity, however, comes with asking the difficult questions and really pushing and challenging people in what they believe, helping them to think through what they believe and giving them something to think about.

As believers, I think it’s vital for us all to see what goes on here and what’s discussed during it. It really causes us to examine what we believe and gives us perspective on a vast amounts of topics. The common misconception for Elephant Room is that it’s only for ministry leaders. It is far from that. It’s good for everyone serving in the church - both new to ministry and the person who’s been in ministry for 30 years.

Join us as we head down to Harvest Bible Chapel in Oakville and take part in this event via simulcast. It’s January 25, from 10-5 and if you register before November 30 its $79. Regular pricing is $99 and there is a student rate of $29. The website is www.theelephantroom.com.  Hope to see you there!

Harvest Bible Chapel, it's right on our tails! Christmas time snuck up once again and we didn't even see it coming!

I love Christmas, the smells, the fellowship times, and the MUSIC! Speaking of which, we have a choir for our December 18 service and we want all the voices we can get. Whether you can sing or not, we want you!

Rehearsals are every other Thursday at 7 p.m. in the music room of TCS. We have two great songs picked and would love to have you come out and join us for our next rehearsal, November 10. So face your fears and join the crew!

Email me for details at: jdonald@harvestbarrie.ca

I look forward to seeing you out there!

Blessings,

ThuThursdayOctOctober13th2011 New HBF Church Plants As some of you may or may not know, Harvest Barrie is part of the Harvest Bible Fellowship.

The Harvest Bible Fellowship trains new leaders to go out and plant Harvest Bible Chapel’s around the globe. HBF is all about fulfilling the great commission.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. - Matthew 28:19-20
Recently within HBF, the Lord has blessed us with so many new campuses just this month in October! Five new Harvest Bible Chapels are starting in Pittsburgh, Rochester, Western Massachusetts, Niagara and Makwanpur Nepal.

With these five churches launching: 77 Harvests will exist in 10 countries on four continents. Currently in the works they have another 21 church plants that are getting prepared for the upcoming year. Some countries included in that are Nairobi, Kenya, Chennai and India. The gospel is being preached!

Praise the Lord for what he is doing through the Fellowship. It’s such a blessing to be a part of it!

Some way’s we can pray:

1. For God's strength, grace and wisdom as things are a bit out of control – in a good way.
2. For insight that surpasses any of our ability to make sense of the Spirit's leading, direction, guidance
3. For healthy, appropriate, self-sustaining churches
4. For elder installs scheduled and for developing international elder teams
5. For more churches in HBF North America to accept coaching roles and join with HBF Missions; making it a priority; catching vision/mission, mobilizing the majority of disciples locally to Pray-Give-Go

"Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!" - Psalm 105:1

Yes the worship guy’s here with yet another blog post on music! I love music as you well know, and I especially love music that really ministers to me and seems to communicate things to the Lord in such a beautiful word picture or melody. The newest CD from All Sons & Daughters, “Brokenness Aside EP No. 1” is really doing both of those things for me, it’s a short CD with only six songs but all of them are fantastic.

It’s such a creative recording, not the “cookie cutter” worship CD, although I still love most of those too :-) They really step outside of the box both musically and lyrically in such a beautiful way. The opening track “Alive” paints a picture of us being alive in Christ only because of him, “Soaked in all the grace that we’ve been given, unchained from all that we have done”.  It’s in and through Christ that we even have life, his mercies are new everyday!

“Let It Shine”, speaks of the light shining through the darkness no matter where we are at in life. The second verse is my favorite one, it says “There’s only one way to wash yourself clean, so let the dirt fall and get on your knees”, then the chorus encourages us to let the light (or the love of Christ) shine in our lives.

“All The Poor and Powerless” is one of my favourite tracks on the record. A re-recorded version off their older CD, it is a song that speaks of the day described in Romans 14:11 that says, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God”. A beautiful picture of that day when everyone will know that our God reigns and we will sing hallelujah to him who’s deserving of all the glory. The song ends with a choir singing hallelujah together and it’s a very powerful moment in the song.

“Brokenness Aside” is the self-titled track. A song that speaks of our Saviour's never ending grace for us. The chorus says, “I am a sinner, if it’s not one thing it’s another, caught up in words and tangled in lies. But you are the Savior and you take brokenness aside and make it beautiful”. No matter our struggles, the Lord’s grace is more than enough for us, and shows us his love even in our darkest times. He is refining us in the hard times and this song is such an amazing reminder of that.

“I Am Set Free” is no doubt a song about our chains being broken and us being covered in our Saviour’s grace. It's another song with the use of a choir that just paints such a beautiful picture of the body of Christ to me. The bridge of the song says, “Yes Lord we are grateful for your grace and for your love”. A cry that needs to be sung by so many of us. We tend to take it for granted so often.

“Your Glory” is the last track on the EP. A song that speaks of the holiness and glory of the Lord, and that very glory causing us to fall on our knees in awe. My favourite line in the song is in the chorus and says, “The heartbeat of my life is to worship in your light”. Such a true lyric that needs to be the prayer in our devos daily, our joy needs to be found in him!

Get this record and let it minister to you in your life. I promise that you will not regret it. Make sure to listen to the lyrics and sing along, and really let them impact the way that you worship and live your life for the Lord.

Blessings,

Jordan

Yes the worship guy is blogging about music again…but it’s because Harvest Chicago’s very own Lindsay McCaul is at it again! Lindsay released a new EP on iTunes entitled, “If It Leads Me Back”.

It features three original songs, including my favorite track “Come Rest” - a song that really speaks to those of us who feel like we are often following hard after God on our own strength, We are reminded that he has paid the price for us and we need to trust and rest in that assurance that he promises.

This EP is not only catchy but it’s true to God’s Word and really neat to see/hear what the Lord is doing in Lindsay’s life at this time. If you're looking for something good to listen to, make sure to grab this! And don’t forget to pray for her as she continues her career and music. The Lord is certainly opening up some doors for her!
TueTuesdayAugAugust16th2011 Worship On Earth As It Is In Heaven

"I still have morning voice…"
"I got into a fight with my spouse on the way to church…"
"I have bad breath and don’t want to frighten the people next to me…"
"I just CAN’T hold a tune to save my life!"
All of these, and more, are excuses I’ve heard (…and even used at times) on why people don’t lift their voices in worship on a Sunday morning.

Church is a place where we come to celebrate what the Lord has done for us, what he is doing in our lives in the midst of even the most difficult circumstances at times. It’s a place where we thank him for sending his Son to save us, a people who are so undeserving. Church is where we commune with other believers, and lean on one another. We come to church to grow in him and learn how to love him more and more each day, but Sunday morning shouldn’t be the only day that we worship the Lord.

I know you don’t wake up at home with a live worship band and 300+ people in your living room excited to see you and sing out. But the Lord is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8.) We need to worship him with the same passion and fervency in our individual quiet time daily as well as our Sunday mornings. All over scriptures we hear about eternity in heaven and how it’s going to be spent worshipping him day after day, forever and ever and we won’t be restless about that! Why not get a start on that while we are still here on earth right?

I’m currently reading a book called Worship On Earth As It Is In Heaven, it’s a book written by a Pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel, Rolling Meadows, Rory Noland. I would highly recommend it for your library. It’s very practical insight on how to worship our great God. The book starts off studying one of scriptures most well known worshippers, David. David wrote most of the Psalms, worship songs he wrote to the Lord that have so many times been reworked into worship tunes we hear even today.

The book discusses why we need to make worship a priority in our lives. It needs to be a priority because it’s why we were created! Isaiah 43:21 says we are “the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise”.  So many of us would use the excuses that I had listed above, but we need to know the Lord doesn’t care what we sound like, it’s where our hearts are at. They need to be at a place where we are truly giving him the glory he deserves. We are called to be worshippers and that needs to compel us to be worshippers of our great God!

Know that worship isn’t just the singing we experience before the message every Sunday morning. It’s not just music period! It’s our response to our wife when she asks us to do something we aren’t too keen on. It’s the way we handle that difficult co-worker at the office, or how we react when someone cuts us off on the 400. We need to be bringing glory to God in EVERYTHING that we do. So make worship a priority in your everyday life, and also on Sunday mornings! Come to church on time and have your heart prepared to give glory to the Lord for he is worthy of our praise!

Blessings,

Jordan
ThuThursdayAugAugust4th2011 Pastoring your "Little Church"
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 0 comments Add comment
Last week I had an amazing opportunity to head up to Huntsville and spend a few days with all the worship leaders from the Canadian Harvests.  It was a time to meet, to fellowship, to worship and to refresh ourselves by leaning on one another with responsibilities that the Lord has given us within our homes, churches and the callings in our lives.

Our speaker, Matt Boswell, is a worship leader and a songwriter from Texas who shared with us from the word and his various experiences both good and bad in ministry. One thing that really stuck with me was what he referred to as the “little church”.

The “little church” refers to our households. Matt had brought up a great point, that we need to be the worship leaders and the pastors in our homes before we attempt to shepherd and lead the people within our congregation that the Lord’s given us. This principle about the “little church” was an amazing concept to me because it’s not just relevant to leaders in the church but also every man and lay person within the household.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 was the passage which he taught from:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on your doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

This passage is full of conviction and truth. We are called to love the Lord with ALL our hearts and ALL our souls, holding nothing back. As leaders of our home we are called to show our family the love of Christ always even when it’s the hardest. We are to teach our wives and our children the scriptures, teach them to love them as they are God-breathed. It should be on our family’s minds always, morning and night.

Men this is a call out to you; we could always use encouragement in this area. Being the godly leader of our homes is a full time job. There isn’t vacation and time off from it. I’ve just been married for two months now and see the struggle at times to always turn to the Lord when my pride gets in the way. I’m called to lead my wife and one day my kids as well in the things of the Lord. So I encourage you to stay steady in this practice if you have been, and if not it’s never too late to make this verse applicable to your family and the Lord will bless you abundantly.

Pastor your “Little Church” with grace and love.

Blessings,

Jordan
WedWednesdayJulJuly20th2011 Never once did we ever walk alone
byJordan Donald Tagged No tags 2 comments Add comment
As a worship leader, you might expect that I enjoy listening to a variety of different worship music.  Listening to so much of it, I particularly love coming across certain songs that I can really connect with.  Songs that seem to theme along just with what I am experiencing in my own life, songs that I haven’t written, but I may as well have because it’s EXACTLY what I am feeling at that time in my life.  With Pastor Todd’s recent series God is faithful in the face of my failure, the Lord brought to my attention some hard things that I really need to give to him, things from the past and things from the present that seemed to just linger around and make my walk with Christ seem difficult and inconsistent.

Seeing weak areas in our walk with Christ is never an easy thing, but it’s so encouraging to me that no matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done, he truly is faithful in all our circumstances.  A song that I came across recently that really speaks truth to me, especially within the series we just finished, is a song called “Never Once” by Matt Redman, off his newest release “10,000 Reasons”.  The song is an amazing reminder that God is faithful ALWAYS, even when we often fall short in so many ways.

God never let’s us go through something that we can’t handle. One of my favorite lines in the song says: “Scars and struggles on the way”, and those scars and struggles are different for so many of us.  It could be something deep and permanent, something that’s been with us since our childhood, and it could be something shallow and temporary, someone that bugs us at work or a neighbour even.  No matter what it is though, there’s so much hope in the following line and the chorus of this song that state:

"But with joy our hearts can say, yes, our hearts can say
Never once did we ever walk alone, never once did you leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, you are faithful”

In this video, Matt Redman shares his story of the writing of this song:

Even in the difficult times, we need to have our joy in the Lord.  This album has been so encouraging to me this past couple weeks and I’m truly fired up about it and all that it has to say about our Lord and why he is SO worthy of our praise.  If you were looking for something new for your iTunes library I would most certainly recommend it for you!  Check it out where you buy your music and worship the Lord to it at home and in your car!

Blessings,

Jordan
