It was a beautiful day inside and out on Sunday!

But before I get to that, let me just mention that Amy Fotherby, our Director of Welcome! and Integration at Harvest, was married on Saturday to Kevin Passafiume. It was a real blessing to be at the ceremony and reception and celebrate with them. God was glorified in how everything came off, I’d say.

As for that beautiful Sunday God provided, it was fun to start the service off with that video of the kids wishing their moms a Happy Mother’s Day. If you missed it that’s because you weren’t in the worship centre on time! Ha! But I’ve included it here in the blog so the moms can see their little cuties again.

The worship was powerful and passionate. I’m sensing a freedom in worship each week that just draws me in. I have the worship music rockin’ my iPod all the time, but getting together with the church to sing these songs to the Lord is just something else entirely. Love it!

We also heard Pastor Todd bring a strong word from Hebrews 12:1-3. The message was “Faith endures” and our time together in worship ended with a time of seeking God for endurance so that we would not grow weary or fainthearted. It was so cool to see all those small group leaders up front ready to pray for us to have greater endurance in the midst of the often-difficult circumstances of life.

And I’m taking some time this week to think about who is in my “cloud of witnesses.” Who are the ones I’m looking to as my examples of enduring faith? You should take sometime to do that too.

The worship aside, because it was Mother’s Day, we also launched our effort to raise funds for the Barrie Pregnancy Resource Centre though their annual Baby Bottle Drive. The BPRC is one of our partner ministries here in town that we actually had the privilege of founding in 2007. Now dozens of churches and many individuals in Barrie and Simcoe County support the ongoing work of the BPRC. So fill those baby bottles you picked up on Sunday and bring them back full on Father’s Day. If you didn’t get one, they will be available again this Sunday in the lobby.

Some big things are coming up in the next few weeks! On Tuesday, May 22 we’ll be getting together as the church to pray for the special celebration weekend with Pastor James MacDonald and Meredith Andrews. That happens May 26 and 27. If you don’t have your concert tickets, get them before we sell out. And plan on inviting friends and family to come to the three celebration services planned for that weekend.

Have a super week!

Praise God for how he just continues to pour himself out at Harvest Barrie.  It was highly evidenced again Sunday through some great worship and communion.  A song you should listen to again this week is "Jesus, Son of God." You can get it on iTunes here.

The message by Pastor Todd was another banger.  "Do you have a faith that believes?"  It came out of Hebrews 11:32-40.  God can literally do anything in our lives and with us if we simply believe that he can.  If you missed the service, be sure to catch up with the message online.

Another super cool thing being organized by one of our small groups is an amazing event happening June 2 at TCS to raise money for the McLellan family as they need $25,000 to install a wheelchair lift in their van for their growing son, Sawyer.  For more information or to learn how to donate or be a part please check out the Facebook group or website. This is a great opportunity for our whole church to gather with this small group in support of this family!

By the way, God is working in amazing ways like that through many of our small groups so.... if you're not in one.... WHY NOT?!  Talk to Amy Fotherby today (afotherby@harvestbarrie.ca) and get in one.

Have a great week!

Hello from Chicagoland!  I am down here for Harvest University (#HarvestU) with 57 other people from Barrie and I am really excited!  There are around 2000 coming from all over the world for training and encouragement.

We started with worship and prayer last night and though many had not arrived yet, including many of our contingent, it was great!  To be here some of us had to miss worship and the Word at home.  Boo!  I listened to it online last night and it was another great challenge from Hebrews.  You can hear it here. The curriculum is up and even if your SG isn’t meeting there is a lot to think about in the questions.  Check them out here.  I think my choice to be here just might be one of those life-transforming decisions.

I heard many enjoyed the “scaled back worship team”.  Many from the worship teams are here.  Pray they will be renewed and blessed.  Look out for next week when they are back and charged up!  If it seemed like there were less people around after second service it's because they were hitting the road to get down here.  Pray they will be greatly encouraged and learn lots!

There are ten different teaching tracks offered and we have people in all of them.  There is so much to learn!  The main sessions are powerful times of seeing what God is doing in Harvest Bible Chapels around the world and then digging into God’s Word along with great worship!  I’m looking forward to Pastor Todd bringing it this evening and I know he would appreciate your prayers.

Well, the first session is starting so I have to go.

Stay tuned!

The Sunday after Easter Sunday picked right up where we left off last week…passionate worship and a powerful message from God’s Word. It was a no-holds-barred message…like we walked into church and got slammed with a piece of rebar across the forehead! Especially for husbands and fathers.

From three pretty non-descript verses in Hebrews 11:20-22, we learned that Isaac, Jacob and Joseph, with all of the ups and downs of their faith, still managed to pass on a blessing to future generations. We even started by just defining what a blessing even is. I know I sometimes use that phrase a little flippantly. It was hard not to be convicted by this one. If you weren’t in the room for it, check it out online.

Toward the end of the message it got real practical when Pastor Todd built off of some reading he was doing in John Trent’s book, The Blessing. I thought it would be helpful for you to have this. We heard that the formal aspects of The Blessing include loving touch (laying your hands on your son or daughter) and making sure you actually say it; verbalizing the blessing in a clear way. The content of the blessing itself has three elements: (1) Personal Commitment (The Blessing of Love) - “I am here for you”; as you share your unconditional commitment to him/her, to be there for them, as God gives you strength, for the duration; …and that’s going to flow from you knowing that God committed his Son to die on your behalf and that he mediates for you as your advocate before the Father; you know you’re loved and cherished by him; (2) Affirmation of Worth (The Blessing of Identity) - “You are valued”; as you let them know that out of all the children in the world, you’re grateful God gave them to you; affirm their worth and identity in Christ; …and you have to know your value in Christ as his sons and daughters if you’re going to do this for your sons and daughters; and (3) Expression of potential for the future (The Blessing of Purpose) - “You have so much ahead of you”; you see potential in them for a great future, and that their strengths and gifts are things God can use to help their own family, the church and others; …and you have to know what your potential is in Christ (not pie in the sky nonsense, but a faith-filled expectation that God is with you to do exceedingly, abundantly above all you could ever ask or think.

Pastor Roger is going to contribute some further resources for any moms and dads who really want to get on this and make some changes in their homes to ensure they’re passing on a blessing as the patriarchs did.

As far as modeling it…well, you couldn’t miss Brian and Boaz Langford serving on the parking team before the 9 a.m. service. There’s a dad showing his son something good…passing on a blessing to future generations, for sure! Wondering if we can get orange vests to fit the junior parking attendant.

And is was modeled too in Pastor Todd’s interview just prior to the message.  It is always exciting to have people from our church family sense the call to serve in ministry vocationally, and Pastor Todd introduced us to Chad Freeman on Sunday. He’s heading to Harvest Bible Chapel St. Vincent for the next six months to serve as an intern and continue the process of figuring out God’s will and direction for his future ministry. He shared a couple of solid, Scripture-based prayer requests, and many of you pledged by raising your hands to pray for him. As a reminder, here’s what Chad asked us to pray:

-     Luke 12:31-32  But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided for you.  Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom; and

-     Ephesians 1:17-19 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.  I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe, according to the working of his great strength.

Powerful!

Between services there was great Welcome@Harvest meeting with about a dozen newcomers to Harvest who are checking out whether or not God is leading them to be part of our church family.

I thought I’d mention too that on Saturday members of our Summer Glasgow Team as well as men from our two MIA groups (Men in Action) did an extensive trimming of the brush that was choking the woods behind our Bayfield Street office. The woods are part of the YMCA property and the crew did this to make the view from the office better as well as to help the Y out with its annual property clean up.

It was a great day together.  And like Pastor Todd said, it just seems to be such a long time between Sundays! Talk to you next Monday from Harvest University in Chicago!

God bless you…and I mean that!

Unbelievable weekend... Hopefully you read that first word and equate it with "amazing/sensational/phenomenal/astounding" as opposed to "not believable."  It's truly awe-inspiring and life-changing to think through what Christ has done for us.  The Good Friday service left us with such an appropriate sense of unresolved feelings as we came face to face with the gruesome death of Jesus on the cross.  Of course it's just so necessary to go there before we can ever get to the celebration...

But thankfully there is reason for celebration and that's exactly what we did Sunday - so cool to hear everyone shout out the victory cry as we celebrate that death has been defeated and there is now no condemnation for those in Christ - he is RISEN!  And how amazing is it that there were those who stood up and claimed that victory for themselves for the very first time?!  Unbelievable indeed.

A song that has been a big part of our worship the last few weeks is called Holy (Wedding Day) by The City Harmonic.  It's a fantastic album you should pick up this week for sure.  Here's the link to that song in iTunes so check it out.

I know from where I sit each week, the great effort that goes into a worship service and I could see an amazing extra effort from staff and volunteers that went into our Good Friday and Easter Sunday worship. Extra staging, extra lighting, extra audio equipment, extra people (loved the choir!), extra instruments (loved the drummers!), extra, extra, extra cool!  I am so grateful to be part of a church family that is giving it up for JESUS! To him be glory!

Have a great week - don't lose your focus on what Easter is all about.  It's not just a holiday that comes and goes.  It's the foundation to all we believe and everything our lives are about.  Now go shout it out with everything inside you.

Every time we get together as the church, I just love it. Can’t wait for the next Sunday to roll around after the last of the chairs are packed away and the storage units stowed.  I saw a couple of post-service tweets that nailed it for me…

@hshewfelt Another amazing Sunday @HarvestBarrie!! Run hard: Faith obeys...exactly what I needed to hear!!

@johncoros LOVE WORSHIPPING WITH OUR CHURCH @HarvestBarrie The only thing better will be when we are before His throne #cantwait

Captures my heart exactly!

That amazing Sunday started with great worship. It was so great to see Steve Dobbs up there leading again. And did you find our worship director Jordan? He gave the drummers a Sunday off and climbed into the drum room himself. After the service he told me that he said he got a whole new perspective from in there!

The service closed with Luke on keys and Jordan singing “Holy (Wedding Song)” by The City Harmonic. What a powerful little song. Pastor Todd said that we’d be hearing the song again on Good Friday. It bridged the theme of this past Sunday’s message perfectly into thinking about the crucifixion of Christ and the reality that because of his sacrifice, death’s sting has been removed. So grateful for that! If you want to hear that song, you’ll have to get it from iTunes. No YouTube link to it.

Pastor Todd’s message shredded me as usual. We opened to Hebrews 11:8-19 and heard about the four signs of faith-filled obedience. He was right, we don’t like the notion of having to obey, and his five objections were on the mark for me. And the whole idea of being ready to be in heaven with the Lord, no matter how good it might be here and now, really struck me. We’re made for that better, heavenly country. If you didn’t hear the message, you really need to check it out online.

Sunday was also a pretty big day from a technical standpoint as several pieces of audio equipment that were overdue for replacement got…uh, replaced finally. The audio techs were all geeked-up on Saturday putting everything in place. Aside from a few small glitches, everything went incredibly well. And I know that Jordan and the staff are super grateful for the audio tech guys who put a ton of work into making the sound great each week. Among other things, the new equipment gives us greater capability in quality recording which will improve our radio and online presence and will eventually give us the ability to live-stream to the web as well as produce video for campus sites. So cool!

While we were meeting in the worship centre, our grade 4-6 Higher Ground kids were having a Seder or Passover meal as a way of better understanding the account of Jesus’ last week on earth and the message of salvation that is pictured in that meal. So grateful for Devyn and Caroline who put so much into their teaching. These kids are blessed! Check out the pics.

There are only a few short days left to get those Good Friday and Easter invitations into the hands of the people God has put into your life. As Pastor Roger said, they will often come if you make the invitation personal. If you can’t get a print invite into their hands, use this link.

By the way, I just signed up for Twitter (@EutychusBarrie) …so start following me, k?

I’ll be blogging again next Monday. It’ll be, “The Monday Blog about Good Friday and Easter Sunday”. What a weekend we have ahead of us as we remember the death of Christ and celebrate his resurrection to new life!

To him be glory!

Let me say right up front that there was so much about this week that was incredible that I’m not sure where to begin!  Personally, I thought it was a sweet time of communion listening to God’s Word read over us.  Then I got hit between the eyes about whether my worship was that of Cain or that of Abel.  The difference is faith.  Do you struggle with whether you’re actually worshipping by faith?  I sometimes do.   But I’m keeping at it – yup, “by faith.”

Then I got hit with, “What am I known for?”  This is the second week in a row I’ve been challenged about this!  What is the testimony, the witness, of my life?  I guess the question is not, “What would I like on my tombstone?” or, “What would others put on my tombstone?” but, “What would God put on my tombstone?”  That’s going to take some serious reflection!

I know Pastor Todd is right about finding intimacy with God.  It doesn’t happen without personal disciplines and community relationships.  I am so thankful for my small group.  I heard that in one SG last week, they affirmed the guys because of how they treated their wives.   That’s a good thing for you married types to be known for!  Along that line, here is that quote from J. Oswald Saunders to think about:

We are at this moment as close to God as we really choose to be. True, there are times when we would like to know a deeper intimacy, but when it comes to the point, we are not prepared to pay the price involved.

One thing that really affected me was the “missing page.”  I would hope that it’s more than just a feeling, though it certainly was that.  I can’t shake that picture.  It’s just too real.  If you don’t know what I mean you better listen to the message.  Then get some of those invitations to the Easter services into someone’s hands!  You can also use the online link and send it to a friend by e-mail, or tweet it, (or send it by papyrus like me).

Isn’t it true that behind every good thing here there is someone working hard to make it happen?  The Awana leaders did a great job last Saturday and the drum surround looks great!  I’m so thankful to work for Christ alongside the 80%!  By the way, I did finally find out why we are really supposed to sign the Friendship Register every week.  It’s to make sure none of us followed Enoch!

Peace,

Eutychus

It was an amazing March day as we gathered together on Sunday morning. Seems bunches of people were still away for March Break, and yet we had a good group of people worshipping the Lord Jesus together.

The worship was great as usual. The song line up took us vertical in a big way. So grateful for our worship teams and Jordan’s leadership. He introduced a new song that we will be singing together on Easter Sunday. Paul Baloche’s “We are Saved” is not on YouTube, but you can download it for free here and also watch the video by Baloche for the song, “The Same Love”. Very cool!

And about Easter, Pastor Todd let us know that we will have invitations in our hands soon to give to people to invite them to Good Friday and Easter Sunday services. This is the best opportunity in the year to have your loved ones join you at Harvest. Let’s take advantage of their willingness to come and boldly invite them!

Back to the service. With Pastor Mike preaching at Harvest Muskoka, Pastor Todd filled in on child dedications with his daughter Emilie helping out. Pierre and Trina Ouellette brought Chloe to be dedicated at the 9 a.m. service and Daniel and Leanne Roberts brought Crystal at 11:15 AM.  The Ouellettes' dedication was done with a little French and a little English to recognize Pierre’s first language and hopefully one Chloe will speak someday! Emilie read this as Chloe’s verse: Psaume 139:23, “Sonde-moi, ô Dieu, et connais mon coeur! Éprouve-moi, et connais mes pensées!”

We were also strongly encouraged to get our Meredith Andrews concert tickets before they’re all gone! Stop by the office this week and don’t be left out. We were rightly called out for our “late-to-sign-up-ways” and Pastor Todd doesn’t want any of us crying on his shoulder when we can’t get tickets!

The message in Hebrews 11:1-3 was powerful as we considered what faith really is. God does call us to “run with endurance the race set before us” (Hebrews 12:1), and that has to be done even in the face of how hard life is. If you missed the message, check it out here.

I’m looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for our evening of prayer and praise. This is going to be a great time of worship and Word based prayer.

Have an amazing week!

Well it was a great Sunday... to be on time... Todd brought the hammer from Hebrews 10:19-25 which was all about the unwavering confidence we have to draw near our Lord because of his shed blood for us.  (You can listen here.) That's just flat out encouraging as we sort through our own sinfulness in light of what Christ has done.  Hopefully verse 25 was also encouraging to you as it urged us to not be, "neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."  Still encouraged??  Without question that verse is a big challenge - are we committed to gathering with our church family on Sundays, and with our small groups throughout the week?  And are we on time to these things and our hearts prepared for what God would have for us? Worthy questions to ask yourself this week as you meditate on the passage.  At the end of the message, Pastor Todd led us through a commitment card covering the next 16 weeks and a commitment to Worship, Walk and Work for Christ.  Don't let that commitment get away from you. You can download the card here.  Post it on your fridge as a reminder to "not neglect."

Jordan took his first crack at announcements which was entertaining (unless you were a guest), and the team did a fine job of leading us to the throne room of Christ in worship.  One of the songs we sang was Give me Faith. Give it a listen and have a great week.

It is so good to get together with God’s people and the LORD has been doing a great work each week in our hearts and lives.

With Jordan and Roxie away in Chicago for the week to participate in the live worship recording, Matt MacDonald, a member from Harvest Bible Chapel Oakville, brought along Jake McKee and lead worship along with our team.  Matt has been here before, of course, and once again blessed us with his leadership.

I was speaking with a couple of people who were impacted by Sunday’s message in Hebrews 10:1-18.

It was a very powerful message and cleared up a lot for him.  He's understanding the reasons for God’s requirement in the Old Testament as being a precursor for the coming of Christ. And I'm loving that sacrifices are no longer necessary! And loving that God looks at the heart and not the ritual.

Another person wondered what it might be like to get through a message without tears flowing. The reminder that we can’t simply stand still in our walk with Christ hit hard again. To do so is to invite drift in our lives. God’s intention for us is to progress day by day in our walk with him…continually being sanctified. Am I seeing growth?

I stayed for two services because I wanted to hear what Pastor Todd was going to say about the “JESUS” display that’s been on the stage for the last couple of months. He went to point to it in first service and realized that it hadn’t been put out. And he made a bit of a big deal about it. So the crew made sure it was out for second…and then he didn’t even refer to it! Ha!

By the way, in the message, we were challenged to test whether or not we were progressing and Pastor Todd went through a list of things to think about. He went through it kind of fast, so I got it from him. Take a look.

Are you seeing progress…

  • in your understanding of the Scriptures
  • in your intimacy with the Lord
  • in your passion to serve
  • in your love for the lost
  • in your holiness

Plenty to think about there!

At the end of our time together, Pastor Todd reminded us of two important things: First, this Thursday night, we will be in Collingwood for an Evening of Worship and the Word. Check out all the details. If you live in that area, be sure to join us!

And second, that we start a new section of Hebrews titled, “Run Hard” next Sunday and that the first passage we will look at will deal with, among other things, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together”. The choice, he said, was clear; choose to come and hear a message about faithfully coming to worship, or skip out so you don’t have to hear that.  Wondering what attendance will be like next Sunday?!

It was another powerful time of worship as we gathered together as the church yesterday. So great to meet some new people and to see God’s glory evident in our midst.

The worship team had a bit of a different look and feel with a more acoustic set. They even took the drum surround down and “uncaged” Woody.  Ben was playing a sweet acoustic bass, and Luke was using a micro-synth and midi-keyboard connected to a Macbook (does that qualify as “acoustic”?). The sound was great and the team led us to the Lord in heartfelt worship. Loved singing, “Give Me Jesus” as we closed the service.

There were also mics in the aisles and Jordan opened things up for us to go up and read a passage. So many great things we heard. So true that when you know the personal stories of some of those who shared a Scripture passage, it makes it so much more impactful.

Pastor Todd’s message in Hebrews 9:15-28 had us considering and eagerly waiting for “the promised eternal inheritance”…an inheritance that is already being poured out in some significant ways to his children. If you didn’t make it yesterday, you should listen to the message. Check it out online. The sermon notes and small group study questions are all available to you.

Todd also made an announcement just before he preached about a certain staff member who got engaged on Saturday night… Amy Fotherby, our Director of Welcome and Integration will be married this spring to Kevin Passafiume, who has recently come to us from Harvest Bible Chapel York Region. Congrats, Amy and Kevin!

During the service we also witnessed three families (two at 9 a.m. and one at 11:15) bring children to be dedicated to the Lord. The Langford family (all nine of them!) brought Jubilee and Tehillah to be dedicated, the Barrett family (all seven of them!) brought Asher to be dedicated, and Mike and Stephanie Marsh (all three of them!) brought Paisley before the Lord. What a joy it is for us to celebrate the gift of God in these precious children! Pray for these families as they rear their children for the glory of God.

I’m writing this while a bunch of Harvest families take advantage of this mid-winter holiday and the amazing weather to do some sledding and play snow-football at Sunnidale Park. Great times!

That’s it for me.  Have an amazing week! Hope there’s an eagerness for the things of Christ in your heart all week long.

Pastor Todd felt a little uncomfortable, it seems, letting us know he and his wife Cheryl were in Orlando last week. They were blessed to be part of the Harvest Bible Fellowship senior pastors and wives retreat and then to tack on some vacation days. He evidently came back fired up to preach! More about that in a sec.

Sunday morning set up—from an audio point of view—didn’t go very well. Still not sure why, but the worship team didn’t really get to practice until about 8:30. That’s late. There were some as yet unexplained technical issues that kept some critical components from working.

As the clock ticked closer to the start of the 9 a.m. service, the prayer team (they walk the halls and rooms prior to the services lifting their prayers to the Lord for all that will go on in the facility that morning) was sent off to another room to pray in light of the technical issues we were facing and the subsequent lack of rehearsal time for the worship team. Within minutes of that happening, suddenly what wasn’t working worked.

In light of the fact that we set up and tear down each week, it is remarkable that we don’t have more issues with our audio equipment. And I know that the church is grateful for the behind the scenes effort that goes into making our worship such a great experience week by week.

All in all, the worship was very capably led by Chad Ballantyne and team and the audio equipment gave us no more trouble for the balance of the morning. What do you say we praise God for that!

As for the message (I said we’d get back to this), it was a tough one; a pronounced warning about being in the church without actually being saved. Pastor Todd was "no-holds-barred" taking on multiple church traditions including our own, citing his greatest fear being that people in our own church might someday hear the words of Jesus from Matthew 7:21-23, “Depart from me, I never knew you.” At the same time, we received such assurance as he pointed to Hebrews 7:21 and let us all know that God’s not changing his mind about us. His love for us is sure. If we are called as his children, no one is ever snatching us out of his hand (see John 10:28). Love that!

If you’ve missed out on any of the Truly Epic series messages in Hebrews, you can listen to them here. I’m certain there’s going to be some great discussions in small groups this week as we digest this one!

Meanwhile, our junior highs and their leaders were off at their Winterfuse retreat in the Muskokas with kids from the other Ontario Harvest Bible Chapels. Pastor Mike reports that little sleep was had and many decisions for Christ were made over the weekend.  Praise God for that! The decisions, that is.

That’s all I have in my notes. Have a great week!

I was coming to church really hoping that there would be huge “JESUS” sign on stage.

I was also hoping that Todd would “hijack” the announcements from Roger for a financial update.

Special offering (last six weeks of 2011) - $40,500
"If they were mine" and Awana baskets  - all 72 children cared for; total given $5,582; money also used for water purification and to help other needy families living around the orphanage
Ways to Give:
1.  Pre-authorized offering (automatically withdrawn from your account according to your schedule)
2.  Online giving (donate through Canada Helps or through your bank)
3.  Offering envelopes (available in your Friendship Register or from ushers)
More info: www.harvestbarrie.ca/giving

I was also hoping for a great time of worship and the Word too…

And who would have thought that all my hopes and dreams would come true January 8, 2012!

If you missed this Sunday, you’ll notice that you missed quite a bit of action. All of the above was true of the service, and if you picked up a theme of hope in my phrasing, it’s because it was a central theme of Todd’s message. We were challenged to really search where our hope is grounded in.

It’s so easy for us to say we trust in God and that our hope lies in him, but when it comes down to it we lack so much faith in that area. We hope for better things ahead but so often turn to quick fixes to help us cope with the difficulties that come our way.  "Biblical hope is a confident expectation and desire for something good in the future. I expect it to happen. It will happen." (John Piper)

Jesus Christ is a steadfast anchor. He will not be moved. We won’t be moved when our faith and hope lie firmly in him. So fitting when Todd used Trevor Peacock and his family’s situation with his daughter Hope to hammer in this point. Todd shared a quote that Trevor tweeted before all of the medical complications occurred - such a powerful line in and of itself.

“God’s will is exactly what you would desire if you knew all the facts.” (Bill Thrasher)

Meditate on that for a while as we head into next week's message, “Jesus: King of righteousness; King of peace”.

Looking forward to then!

Happy New Year!  Though it felt more like a daylight saving time shift to head in for a 10 a.m. service!  It struck me that for a lot of volunteers there is just as much work for one service as there is for two.  I sure appreciate those who join me in getting things ready.  I thought it was great for Mike to point out that the real heroes are those who work and then come to church.  I know a couple of people who often have to come straight to church from work.  I guess I shouldn’t be too quick to judge if I see someone nodding a little!

One thing I learned from Mike’s message is that my new BFF (Best Friend Forever) is the one who is a truth-telling person.  I don’t always like to hear it but I need someone who is not letting me off the hook.  I need a Nathan, and then I need to agree with God about the truth and throw myself on God’s mercy.  Actually, though I need to be confronted once in a while, I need more of a compatriot that is walking with me and regularly encouraging me to do better!  That is what is actually happening in my small group! I heard someone comment that Mike’s last point could be a whole other message.  We really are knit together and influence each other.  I’m glad for that and I’m beginning to realize the responsibility it puts onto my own walk with Christ.  If you missed the first message of the New Year you can hear it here.

Thanks to Joel for leading worship and introducing a new song.  You can get familiar with it below and the whole set list is here.

While we don’t know what 2012 is bringing, it was good to be reminded that just as God was faithful in 2011 we can trust him each new day.  I was glad to hear how Pastor Trevor and Heather Peacock are leaning on him for their daughter Hope.  Glad to be able to share our senior pastor with the Calgary Harvest Bible Chapel.  I’m looking forward to hearing how it went and pray their congregation was encouraged.

I’m on day two of my new Bible reading plan.  Looking forward to the changes my small group will see in me, and that I’ll see in them this year.  Some of those guys really need some work!  :-)

Peace,

Eutychus

Well, it was a bit of an unusual weekend in that Harvest didn’t have a Sunday service for the first time in 10+ years! Instead, the church gathered for two powerful Christmas worship services on Friday and Saturday.

The house was pretty packed both nights, and those who came experienced passionate worship and a strong presentation of the good news of Jesus Christ through songs, readings and preaching.  Seeds of the gospel were planted in the hearts and minds of many, many guests both nights.

One of the highlights of the service was definitely the Storylines video testimony of Chris and Angie Harrison.  You can listen to it again right here.

It was cool to see the room set up in a different way allowing us to see and hear each other better as we worshipped. It caught people a bit when they came through the doors to find their usual seat was not in its usual place! So many commented on how cool it was to have the chairs arranged that way.

I know it took a bunch of volunteers to make the whole thing happen, not the least of whom were the those on the worship team, those serving in tech roles and the set up guys who were stretched to think and work a little differently this time around.  There were also extra Welcome! Ministry team members (parking attendants, greeters, ushers) and workers in Higher Ground who cared for the youngest of the children.

The people who do the head counts say that there were more than 900 in attendance over the two nights. And we praise God for that! We have never had a Christmas Eve service attendance even close to that before.

In that number were, as I said before, many, many guests. Maybe you invited someone and they came. Maybe they didn’t. But you asked. Pastor Roger wrote in Friday’s blog that,

An invitation is a game-changer!  It redraws the lines of communication.  It opens up a new topic of conversation; or re-opens it.  It’s an opportunity to identify with Jesus and – lets. be. clear. – it changes the expectations others may have of you.

Now, if the people you invited didn’t come, that’s cool too. He went on to say, “Because even an invitation refused has opened up the conversation.” And that’s where the mission continues. The passion of those services should compel us on to invite them again and to keep the conversation about Jesus Christ going.

Pastor Todd said in the services that his intentions were clear. He wanted unbelievers in the room to become believers.  He hoped that no one was confused by his intentions.  In fact, I’m thinking none of us should be confused about that being our #1 mandate as Christ-followers…live for Christ and speak for Christ.

I’m looking forward to Pastor Mike’s message next Sunday. I hear there’s only one service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, January 1.  Maybe I’ll see you there!

Grace,

Eutychus

"Go tell it on the mountain!" It seemed to be an anthem this Sunday at Harvest Barrie. We were blessed once again by another choir this weekend, maybe not as cute as the one last week (debatable?), but boy could we hear them and it sounded great!

They kicked it off with a new version of the old Christmas classic, "Go tell it on the Mountain" and it was so fun that Pastor Todd requested they even do it again! (pulling rank he did) If you enjoyed this version be sure to check out the band that wrote it, their name is Seabird and the CD is called "Over the hills and everywhere". One week left to rock out to Christmas tunes so get it fast!

This week we are celebrating the birth of our Saviour so why not have a baby dedication? We had three beautiful children up there during the 9 am. service that Mike and Ang had the privilege of dedicating to the Lord. Mike handled little Cooper Fox who was fast asleep with finesse and serious skill and managed to not wake him at all. I guess practice makes perfect. Sounds like Mike may have gotten a little work out during it too! ; )

A practical message this weekend again as well. "When they saw it" was the title and it asked seven questions that challenged us to change this year. Jesus Christ came to earth to save us from our sins, and that demands change in our lives, living for him! It was a great message and an encouragement indeed. The passage, Luke 2:8-20, was read by a couple of great guest readers. The challenge before the message was great too, hearing Todd talk to a couple who's life change began at a Christmas service at Harvest years ago. I'm excited to see the whole video of their story at our Christmas Eve services!

We need to make sure to invite people out to the services as we will have such a clear gospel presentation both nights. I've heard that there's something special planned for these services unlike any others we've done. I'm so excited to bring glory to our king! If you need to email your invitation, you can find it on our website: www.harvestbarrie.ca/ChristmasEve

Hope to see you all the 23rd and 24th,  and remember to !

“Surely God is in this place!” That was the first thing Pastor Todd said as he got up to preach Sunday’s message. And he was right.

Up to that point we had engaged in some amazing worship that included our kids and youth choir.  It was so good to see them up there bringing it to the Lord along with our worship team and then singing All the Poor and Powerless during the offering. I was definitely meeting with the Lord on Sunday and by what I saw around me, others were pretty engaged in worship too.

And it was so cool to see Jeannie Coros, our children’s ministry director up there doing the welcome and announcements. I appreciated so much her heart as she prayed.

The sermon was titled, “We feel sure of better things” and came out of what Pastor Todd called the most controversial passage in the entire Bible, Hebrews 6:1-12. I saw a Tweet by some small group members who said how eager they were to get together Sunday night to talk it all out. They are savouring the solid meat of the Word!

As the sobering message closed, Pastor Todd appealed to those who were not yet saved to give their life to Jesus Christ and in both services (I always go to both services), seven people stood to their feet! Praise God! The pastors were able to connect personally with each person following the services and have confirmed that at least two of those were rededications. The rest, it seems, are brand new followers of Jesus Christ! Again, praise God!

The Lord is at work at Harvest and you can sense that each Sunday as we arrive to worship. There is an anticipation and eagerness to be together and to see what God will do next. There are so many new faces each week and even some who have heard about Harvest through our new radio ministry, Time to Change.

The last thing we heard on Sunday was an encouragement to use the invitations to get our friends and family to the Christmas worship event happening Friday, December 23 and Saturday, December 24. With all that has been happening lately, I’m pretty sure these are going to be two amazing nights of worship.

I’ll watch for you next Sunday! Hope your week is filled with better things!

I remember a while ago, Todd just mentioned burgers in a message and lots of people went out after the service to get one.  If that is the power of suggestion I can’t imagine how many went out for prime rib yesterday!  Mark Rotolo presented a tantalizing aroma all through the services.  He has a great servant’s heart and lots of skill!  He made a dinner for one of the small groups a while ago.  If you need an excuse to join a small group … well, just saying!

In Hebrews 5, the author is making the point that many believers who should be able to handle more advanced teaching from the Word ("eating meat") were instead satisfied to continue on with only the very basics of the faith ("drinking milk").  We don't want to be looking for milk, but rather we want to be eager to dig in to the meat of the Word.  Although some people try to avoid being used as sermon illustrations, I'm guessing that Dale Chapman and Chris Harrison weren't complaining at all about being the diners in yesterday's illustration!

I hope none of us misses the point of the illustration.  God wants us to dig into his Word and really feed on it.  In 1 John 2:14 he says, “I write unto you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.”  What a great picture of what God’s Word brings; strength and victory.  I want more of that so I’m looking forward to the next few blogs where Pastor Todd promised some practical help.

In the meantime I’m going to review that new song Jordan and Miranda taught us.  Wow!  You can listen to it below and if you missed the message you can get it, sans aroma, right here.

I came across this e-devotional that I thought you might find helpful.  Without prayer nothing else matters, so Daniel Henderson reminds us to be “careful, prayerful, thoughtful and peaceful" in this devotional which you can read here

Speaking of prayer we all need to continue to pray for God’s direction about a Clearview campus.  Mark your calendar to join in praying next Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Tim and Roxie Shaw’s.  It’s open to everyone and it isn’t so much pausing in our busy schedules to make time for this as it is intentionally getting together to do some work in the kingdom.  for more info.

During the announcements, Mike told us about what a great job Harvest did in supporting the gift baskets for the orphanages in Haiti and Nigeria.  All of the kids will get Christmas baskets and there's money left over to go toward other important projects in those countries.

And Mike was also talking about the Christmas Eve services that we're all looking forward to on December 23 and 24 (both at 7 p.m.).  Invitations are available so make sure you pick up a handful next Sunday to use to invite others to join us for these great worship services.  You can also point people to this page of the website for all the info.

Going to get some prime rib!  #hungry #Jesussatisfies

Peace,

Eutychus

Though we struggled with some technical issues this Sunday there was no doubt that God did not struggle to reveal himself to us once again.  Hebrews 5:1-10 was a massive encouragement.  It's amazing how being told that we are beset with weakness can actually be encouraging.  The Word pulls no punches in telling us that we're basically the worst - there's absolutely nothing good about us - yet we have no reason to despair because Jesus Christ has been exalted as the great high priest and is the source of all our strength.  Leaning on him in the heat of our poverty and weakness is where the greatest hope and encouragement come.

Pastor Roger announced that we'll be having two Christmas Eve services this year - December 23 and 24, both at 7 p.m. but no Sunday service that weekend.  On Sunday, December 25, we'll be giving our staff and leaders a chance, after a busy week, to spend some time with their families.  We hope you'll be blessed as you do the same.

Don't forget that the "If They Were Mine" Christmas Campaign booth will be by the big Christmas tree in the lobby for one more Sunday.  Your donations will go to support children at four orphanages - three in Haiti and one in Nigeria.  Dig deep and give as we support and bless children in need.

Have a great week.

10 years, Disney and Swords, Oh My!

Celebrating 10 years of Harvest in Canada, round two, check. Yesterday concluded our second celebration Sunday -  why not celebrate 10 years five times? I know I’m pumped for more!

Pastor Joel Anderson from Harvest Bible Chapel in Orlando brought the word. A great message out of Revelation. A “CHARGE” and an encouragement! I’ve never heard a bugle here at Harvest until now, but I’m pretty sure that we need to work that in for next week. Can someone talk to Jordan about that? Anyone play the bugle?

Speaking of Jordan, the band introduced a new song to us yesterday. A song entitled “Joyful”, a song based on the old hymn with a new chorus about our saving God. Check it out below! Sounds like a keeper.

Worship was great overall yesterday, I love how the celebration Sundays are including these Storyline videos, Sheena Jorgenson really laid it all out for us yesterday. I totally respect that vulnerability and it’s awesome to see the lives that our God can change. When our hearts our softened to his Word he really can transform us! If you missed the video yesterday, definitely check it out below!

Back to Joel now. He’s been hassled so much that he’s from warm, sunny Orlando, and Todd certainly gave it to him during the announcement bit! Joel came with his guns fully loaded though (or maybe just his bags packed?) and brought Todd and Cheryl up for a little “Orlando makeover”. Second service was probably a little less shocking I’m sure!  If you missed the great challenge we received from Joel's message, be sure to listen to it online.

If you saw the sword Joel brought, you might chuckle a bit when you hear he forgot to take it out of his carryon on the flight home! Hope TSA was ok with everything! (#churchprops)

Hopefully you were able to stop by the kiosk in the lobby where the young adults were hosting a display for "If They Were Mine". This Christmas we're joining up with CHIPROM in Nigeria and Freedom House in Haiti to provide Christmas gifts for children in these orphanages.  Our Harvest Young Adults are leading the charge so you can stop by to see them at the booth in the lobby for the next two Sundays and donate some money to bless children this Christmas.  All your donations will be used to purchase gifts and take care of practical needs for those less fortunate. Rally around this campaign and show the love of Christ!

A great Sunday again indeed! So grateful that we're getting used to saying that…praise the Lord for what he’s doing in our church body!

OK, Sunday was all around pretty great.  But I’m kinda getting accustomed to saying that each Monday as I reflect back on our time together.

First, Pastor Mike is simply something else…at the 9 a.m. service, during the child dedication, welcoming Dale Chapman’s moustache to the stage. Just happy that this time he didn’t pull a Lion King and hold any babies aloft. Anyway, Mike did have the joy of dedicating four children to the Lord. Dale and Josee Chapman brought their twins, Averie and Kaela. Ben and Rachel Fyvie brought Emily, and Steve and Annie Harvey brought Lily to be dedicated.  What a blessing!

I noticed a couple of young guys in the worship team. Pretty sure they help anchor the youth teams on Tuesdays. Luke Dugard was up there playing keys for just the second time and Michael Scott was ripping it up on electric guitar for the first time. Love that Michael observed how great it was to see worship from that perspective…watching the church worship. So cool.  Love these young guys and their heart for the Lord.

At the end of the service, Pastor Todd reminded us that Pastor Joel Anderson, with his wife Jill, from Harvest Bible Chapel Orlando will be here next Sunday preaching in our second of five celebration weekends. Todd and Joel have been good friends since 2001 when they both planted churches. I’ve heard that Joel is bringing a message from the Book of Revelation that I’m certain will hit the mark. The lobby is abuzz these days. The worship is passionate. The Word is coming at us in power in this series in Hebrews. It is an exciting place to be each week, and I’m glad I’m here to take it all in and enjoy God’s presence. (If you missed it yesterday, you can listen to Pastor Todd's message online.)

As Sunday closed, I saw one of our leaders praying with a young woman who is new to Harvest. She was praying to turn her life over to Jesus Christ! She had been invited to Harvest by someone else who recently became a Christ-follower and was baptized. God is at work in the hearts of many.

Can’t wait for next Sunday!

Sometimes I don’t know where to begin!  I guess the word that sums it all up is “exposed.”  Pastor Todd reminded us during the announcements that if a cell phone goes off, God would know whose it was, and probably everyone else would too!  There is no use trying to pretend!  It’s a good thing I use my Bible app because I can make sure it’s off.

I didn’t really hear about anyone getting caught with the time change.  But I still got a jolt when I saw the time on my car’s clock!

Things got pretty serious though, as we were reminded that we ought to give an accounting for the freedoms we have.   If I can swing it I want to join the staff down at the Cenotaph to honour our soldiers on Friday morning.

The message was a powerful reminder to be diligent now for the accounting we will give.  I loved this summary statement:  “Go ahead and live the life you want to give an account for.”  That makes it clear that I am responsible for my choices in areas like money, time and abilities.  God misses nothing and his Word speaks directly into my life about these things.  I am so thankful to be part of a body where so many are responsive to these things, and willing to publicly submit to the scrutiny of God’s Word.  What were some of the things God was speaking to you about?  This song, below, that Amy sang during that time is still moving me!  How great is it that when my sin is exposed, God “clothes me in robes of righteousness,” and “covers my nakedness with grace”?

It was a great time affirming Mike Armstrong as a pastor.  Harvest is blessed to have him as part of our leadership team and blessed to have his wife Angie pouring into the lives of so many at Harvest.  They are proven and faithful and I love it when Mike “brings the Word!”

I was moved, again, praying the Scriptures together in our evening prayer meeting.  We prayed through the values that define who we are as Harvest Bible Chapel.  There was rejoicing and tears and supplications and lots of gratitude.

And while we were busy with all of this, it’s also good to know that our new radio program, Time to Change, featuring Canadian Harvest Bible Fellowship teaching pastors, launched on Sunday at 11 a.m. on Life 100.3.

Have a great week remembering the one who set the standard for loving sacrifice!

What a weekend at Harvest - on Friday night we had an incredible youth event called Shine the Light happen down at HBC Oakville.  Nearly 400 students gathered together for an outreach event where the gospel was preached with urgency and boldness and I'm pleased to pass on to you the report that two students from Barrie professed Christ - be praying for them this week as they begin their journey with the Lord.

Sunday was also lights out - Todd brought it from Hebrews 4:1-10 in a message that was all about the rest we have through Jesus Christ.  For many of us it definitely served as a heavy reminder of those we know who are striving so hard to find peace and fulfillment in the things of this world.  Let's remember to pray for our loved ones who need salvation and also lift up those carrying the burden of friends and family who need the hope Christ provides.

Since we're on the theme of prayer, let's keep that train rolling, shall we?  We have a night of prayer coming up next Sunday, November 6 at TCS starting up at 6:30 p.m.  Bring someone out who hasn't attended before as we bathe this ministry in prayer.

And if you or someone you know lives in Clearview Township don't forget about our campus open houses that we're having this Wednesday and Thursday night. All the info you need is available at harvestbarrie.ca/clearview

BTW, if you missed Sunday, our website provides the audio message and the bulletin and if you were there you might want to check out the song that closed out the message, "Soon".

A great Sunday at Harvest this weekend, powerful worship, awesome baptisms, Todd pushed through the message despite being so sick, and Jordan wore shoes yet again this weekend! We witnessed nine baptisms between both of our services; hearing stories that were so evident of the Lord’s work in peoples lives. So refreshing to hear, I think we should do baptisms weekly!

Stories of lives that were transformed from the inside out, letting the Lord really do a work in their hearts. I was so encouraged to hear that there are people in our church reaching out to the lost, really pushing them to come with them to church and guiding them through the transforming power of the Lord. How many of those people said they were witnessed to by a small group leader or another person in the congregation? So great to see the body of Christ walking through life together!

After hearing how the Lord changed people’s lives we were then challenged from Todd to examine our own hearts. To see how we can keep ourselves from having our hearts hardened to the Lord. If you missed it or want to listen again, as always, it's available online.  We were introduced to an awesome new song called “Search My Heart” which really captured what our prayer need’s to be! Check that one out for sure.

We were also introduced to our new elder candidate, Clement Bamikole.  You can find Clement's story in Sunday's bulletin.  (By the way, did you know you can have the bulletin emailed to you every Friday?)

And as you go through this week, remember to not ignore what God is doing in your heart. PAY ATTENTION to that, it’s so easy to forget in the business of life. Encourage one another as we saw in the lives of those baptized, reach out to the lost and don’t let them ignore who our great God is!

Another phenomenal time of worship and the Word on Sunday at Harvest Barrie!  If you missed Sunday, you can listen to Pastor Todd's message in Hebrews 3:1-6 online.  Among other things, we were challenged about the public profession of our faith--"our confession", as the preacher in Hebrews puts it.

A couple of quick applications to that: we're doing baptisms next Sunday, October 23 and if you want/need in on that, this week (705-739-8613).  This is the biblically prescribed way of confessing that Jesus is Lord of our lives.

And second, watch for opportunities to confess and acknowledge Christ this week among people you work with and see during the week who don't follow Christ yet.  There's no doubt God is going to open up some doors for us after a message like that. I wouldn't want any of us to deny Christ this week!

Apart from what we heard in the message, just before he started preaching Todd said it was a big day for the pastoral team. It had been Roger's birthday on Saturday, Mike was off preaching at Harvest Durham, and Jordan was wearing shoes for the first time since joining us here at Harvest Barrie in June. I noticed that he was even wearing socks. Last time he did that it was his wedding day!

And finally, I did slip into the back of the Builder's Meeting on Sunday evening. Among the reports, updates and announcements made at the meeting, the elder board chair, Terry Codling announced Clement Bamikole as our new elder candidate.  That was met with an enthusiastic response from the Builders. His bio will appear in the blog later this week and in the weekend bulletin.  So watch for that.

The finances are still recovering from some tough years and some short term pain in getting the new office up and running. So we're operating with no reserve right now and that makes things a little tight. Everyone must remain faithful in their giving if we're going to continue to move forward in fulfilling what God has for us to do.

One final reminder, if you haven't jumped into the memory project, now is a good time.  We're working on Hebrews 3:12-14 now. You can receive text reminders of the current verses each Tuesday by signing up on the memory page.

I'm outta here. Have super week!

Well, after checking out all the Beatles songs, I have decided that their declaration; “Help, I need somebody …” is about the only thing they have right!  So glad we are getting our truth from the Word and not our drifting culture!

Anyway, I got thinking during the message about the help we need.  (Listen to it here.)  Hebrews 2:9 says Jesus tasted death for everyone and I wondered “why?”  I remembered, (along with Heb. 1:3 and 2:1-3a), 2 Corinthians 5:14, “… because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died.”  He died for all of us because we are all dead and need the life only Jesus gives.  That song we sing, “You Alone Can Rescue” is a powerful declaration of that truth!  I’m really glad for the family members who came for Thanksgiving and am praying some of them will be thinking about whether they will trust Christ completely.

While I’m glad I’ve got my salvation nailed down, Pastor Todd hit me between the eyes with the reality that I can be like a dog.  (I looked at my “best friend” differently when I got home!)  Here are the four lies he said Satan whispers to us so we will excuse our sin:
1.     Just one more time and then I’ll be done.  (1John 2:6, 2:15, 3:6, 3:8)
2.     That’s just the way I am, I can’t change, or I have changed enough. (2 Corinthians 3:17)
3.     I can sin because God will forgive me and give more grace. (Romans 5:20. 6:1)
4.     If I confess to people, they won’t understand and will heap guilt and shame on me.  (John 8: 1-11)

Finally, if I am the church, do I deal in fear, guilt and shame or unconditional love and acceptance?   I know it’s hard for me, myself, to deal with God’s plan of suffering through temptation and depending on Jesus to get through.  I heard in small group that “we can do better together” but Pastor Todd said transparency and vulnerability is risky.  I’m trying to figure out how that balances out in real time and my role in it.  What about you?

If you are reading this it must mean you avoided the “turkey syndrome” or have already slept it off.   I’m thankful for all we have here in Canada, including those Americans among us, in spite of the fact Macleans magazine says they are now claiming we didn’t thrash them in 1812!  Great time together at today's Turkey Bowl.  To quote a Twitter update, "Marrieds demoed the singles".

Peace,

Another fine Sunday at Harvest Barrie this weekend, it's always entertaining to walk in and see a different stage set up. It keeps us guessing I suppose... I just hope that those white panels don't make it in front of the band at any point. It be a bit awkward to look at a bunch of shadows of people during worship. Time will tell!

A great sermon yesterday from Pastor Todd also. “Lest We Drift” was the title. It challenged us, asking the question of whether or not we are in tune to what the Lord has for us or are letting ourselves drift away from him and his plan for our lives. He gave us five practical points on how to make sure that we aren’t drifting away.

1. Intentionally listen to God’s Word.
This seems so simple, yet it can be such a struggle for all of us. It’s hard to hear what the Lord has for us in his Word if we aren’t actually in his Word… Let’s certainly keep on top of that.

2.  Implicitly trust what it says to me.
Once we get to the point where we are in the Word, listening to what it has for our lives, another challenge is trusting that what the Word says is true. So often we seek answers that we want, not the one’s that we need to hear…TRUST the Word of the Lord.

3.  Completely lose my self-righteous attitude.
“self-right-eous” adjective – confident of one’s own righteousness, especially when smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behaviours of others. When we define it, sometimes we develop a greater distaste for it…sounds bad doesn’t it?

4.  Soberly heed the warning leveled at me.
Trust what the Word says! Every transgression/disobedience will receive just retribution. There is no escape from it! You have been warned!

5.  And, easily see God at work in my life.
When we abide by what God’s Word has for us, we see fruit in our lives. Maybe it’s the way we act at work, or at home with our spouses or kids, maybe an in-law that we aren’t so fond of.

When we trust what his Word has for us and abide by it, we can see God@Work in our lives. Let’s set this as our aim this week, friends. Trust in him and what his Word has for us.

U R LOVED.

What a great Sunday! Loving the new stage set up and the energy I’m sensing in worship each week. And our study in Hebrews is already hitting the mark in my own life…helping me get vertical with my God.

We’ve been hearing about The Valley of Vision off and on for a bit now. Pastor Todd talked about it several weeks ago and he tweets a few excerpts several mornings a week for those who follow him on Twitter or Facebook. As we quietly prepared for worship on Sunday, Jordan read an entire prayer from this powerful collection of Puritan prayers and devotionals. For those who are into e-books, you can get the Kindle version of The Valley of Vision from Amazon for $0.99.

Pastor Todd took us through Hebrews 1:4-11 where we heard that nothing (not even angels) should stand in the way of our worship of Jesus Christ. Like a lot of you, I wrote down something at the end of the teaching time that I’m eager to get rid of in my life because I know it keeps me from worship at times.

The message helped us see that Jesus is much superior to angels—as cool as they are to us. We went through that “job description” for angels pretty quickly, so if you are one of those people who might want to study that part again this week, here’s the list he worked through:

The unnamed angels who appear most often in Scripture carry out a variety of tasks—all designed to serve God…

  • Worship and praise - This is the main activity portrayed in heaven (Isaiah 6:1-3; Revelation 4-5).
  • Revealing - They serve as messengers to communicate God's will to men. They helped reveal the law to Moses (Acts 7:52-53), and served as the carriers of much of the material in Daniel, and Revelation.
  • Guiding - Angels gave instructions to Joseph about the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1-2), to the women at the tomb, to Philip (Acts 8:26), and to Cornelius (Acts 10:1-8).
  • Providing - God has used angels to provide physical needs such as food for Hagar (Genesis 21:17-20), Elijah (1 Kings 19:6), and Christ after his temptation (Matthew 4:11).
  • Protecting - Keeping God's people out of physical danger, as in the cases of Daniel and the lions, and his three friends in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3 and 6).
  • Delivering - Getting God's people out of danger once they're in it. Angels released the apostles from prison  in Acts 5, and repeated the process for Peter in Acts 12.
  • Strengthening and encouraging - Angels strengthened Jesus after his temptation (Matt 4:11), encouraged the apostles to keep preaching after releasing them from prison (Acts 5:19-20), and told Paul that everyone on his ship would survive the impending shipwreck (Acts 27:23-25).
  • Answering prayer - God often uses angels as his means of answering the prayers of his people (Daniel 9:20-24; 10:10-12; Acts 12:1-17).
  • Caring for believers at the moment of death - In the story of Lazarus and the rich man, we read that angels carried the spirit of Lazarus to "Abraham's bosom" when he died (Luke 16:22).

Prepared by Dr. John Bechtle

And if you want to dive head first into “angelology” (yup, that’s a real field of study), you should check out Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. After the service, one couple told me they were pulling out their copy of that book to go deeper into what angels are all about.

Pastor Mike prayed with thanks for the tenth anniversary of Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie…actually the tenth anniversary of Harvest in Canada since we were the first one planted outside of the Chicagoland area. Pastor Todd mentioned at the end that this past Sunday marked the official launch of the church back in 2001. He also let us know that while this past Sunday was pretty low key about that, celebration Sundays are coming up in October, November, February, April and June with some great preachers coming in to help us give glory to God for all he has done.

Some reminders that have been passed on to me to pass on to you while I’m writing…

-       Don’t forget the Memory Project (Get it? Fon’t forget the memory project!). Sign up to receive a weekly reminder by text to your cellphone. We’re still working on Hebrews 1:3 this week;

-       Last Sunday, September 11, Pastor Todd and Pastor Roger took about eight minutes to talk about our new ministry year launch and a bunch of things related to it. You can listen to that short update below.

-       If you’re in a small group already, you’ll be starting the book, Transforming Prayer this week. Everyone is pretty pumped about what this will mean for our church as we live out the pillar, believing firmly in the power of prayer;

-       And finally, (this was a long one!), we have a night of prayer coming up this Sunday, September 25. Our Clearview campus prayer group will be joining the rest of us at Timothy at 6:30 p.m. to begin practicing the things we will be learning in Transforming Prayer.

That’s it for me for now. Hope you have an amazing week!

Jesus is everything he says he is!  That new song Jordan led us in has been sticking in my head.  It is colouring everything I think this week.  You can listen to it again below if you need a refresher to get it exactly.  All the new things going on around here are pretty exciting but the one thing that stands out to me every week is God’s presence.

This book of Hebrews is right down my alley if you know what I mean.  It is all about the supremacy of Jesus Christ.   I can endure because of his indestructible life!  We are going to learn so much by listening to God.  We sure need to do that because there is so much turmoil in this world, both on an international scale and on an individual scale.  I so appreciated Todd’s prayer about 9/11.  Ten years' perspective just underlines how we need all of Jesus!  I’m in for getting the whole message of Jesus.  You can hear Sunday’s start on it on the website.

The new things are sure targeted toward that.  Our small group study of Transforming Prayer will be a great start in seeking God’s face.  I can’t wait to party with my small group this week and then start the study next week.  It will be cool to see new people there for the study.  I picked up my workbook at the bookstore for $5!  Some new small groups are starting too.  I’ll be praying for them.  If you're not in a group, find your spot on the website.

The memory project will help too.  Can Pastor Roger get excited about God’s Word or what?  I signed up for the text reminders.  You can too, right here.  I have started memorizing and it really does stick because I keep thinking about these words:  “After making purification for sins, he sat down.”  Jesus made purification for my sins.  He did it all.  I am so glad I get to worship him with everyone here.  And I’m thankful for those becoming members like I have.  If you are saved and baptized and want to become a member the next Membership@Harvest class is this Sunday at 9 a.m. and for the next two weeks following.

This week I will be reflecting on Jesus, waiting for our small group study on prayer, memorizing scripture and looking  forward to the men’s breakfast this Saturday, at 8 a.m. at Timothy Christian School.  As always, all the information is on the web site at www.harvestbarrie.ca.

 Peace,

 Eutychus

It was cool to have Pastor Todd back in the house this Sunday - there's no doubt that the message from Psalm 126 was a challenge but also a real encouragement too.  The sober truth we all need to recognize is that our lives will be marked with tears.  In a sin-sickened world, that's the reality.  But the awesome thing for believers is that we have the ability to experience joy in the midst of all that.  Not just happiness, but real joy.  It's kind of a crazy thing to realize that unbelievers don't have the ability to experience joy.  There can be such confusion around the difference between happiness and joy but Todd showed us some characteristics of each that help bring clarity:

3 Characteristics of Happiness
-Temporary
-Rooted in circumstances
-An emotion

3 Characteristics of Joy
-Eternal
-Rooted in a relationship with Christ
-It's a spiritual state of being

We also sang a great song called 'Glorious'.

And a lot of people have been enjoying the new Matt Redman album 10,000 Reasons.  We're going to be introducing 'Holy' off that album next week on launch Sunday so it would be a great idea to pick up this album and get familiar with it.

Don't forget to be there next Sunday as we kick off our year - bring friends, family and perfect strangers off the street if you need to - we want as many people as possible to be exposed to the glory of God as we start off a new ministry year.

See you then!

Another fine Sunday at Harvest Barrie, showing us that we may all need to come warmed up for worship. We arrived to a new stage set-up with an empty set of choir risers up there. I was wondering during the first song when the choir was going to appear. But after the first song Jordan made it clear that there was no planned choir. He wanted to give the congregants the opportunity to come up and lift up the name of the Lord (that’s a pillar of ours).

Jordan said he refused to continue the set until the risers were full. It always takes the first person to get it going. After Chad Ballantyne started it up, the first service choir got going and the risers were packed! Second service hardly needed any prompting and in minutes their choir was ready to go.  It was an amazing time of worship and so neat to see some “regular” worshipers up on stage. Such a blessing to have some variety within our Sunday services, and also showing us that we don’t have to be a trained singer to help lead people to worship our Lord. He can use the best and the worst, it was truly an awesome time of worship!

After that it left us fired up to hear from God’s Word. Pastor Roger brought it yet again. (If you missed it, you can listen here.)  A little less shouting than last week, but certainly brought with the same intensity! He preached out of one verse, Romans 15:14, which is a feat in itself! Finishing up his mini-series on biblical soul-care, this Sunday was focused on being an advocate.  He gave us a little challenge/test, “Levels of spiritual maturity”, and these were the levels from that section:

Spiritual Child - wants others to feed them, doesn’t read God’s Word on their own and doesn’t feel convicted about sin.
Adolescent - feeds themselves, prays but is inconsistent, struggles with balance.
Adult - studies the Word, feeds off it, isn’t lazy, feeds others in their lives, prayer is not only consistent but desired, committed to God’s people.

I’m sure that all of us would strive to be an adult; I know I certainly do but often fail in these little areas. I am committed but sometimes it doesn’t feel like enough… anyone else out there like that? I loved the way Roger finished his message saying that Jesus Christ is the perfect advocate - it’s SO true. Being able to hear that and then observe communion after was such a blessing. So let’s make sure to strive to be more and more like him everyday. Looking forward to seeing you all next Sunday!

It's always exciting to have a guest preacher in the house, especially when that guest preacher is from another Harvest! So encouraging to me to know that there are other Harvests out there. Both near and far, bringing the same intensity preaching the Word and lifting up the name of the Lord in worship EVERY weekend. Let's certainly make sure we are lifting them up in prayer weekly.

Pastor Norm Millar, of Harvest London, gave a great word this weekend (glad the building stayed cool for him) reminding us again that we need to put our full faith in Jesus Christ. When we are weak he is strong, and we certainly saw that in the life of Gideon over and over!  If you missed Sunday or want to listen to the message again, it's online here.

The song that Jordan and the band introduced was so suiting for the message as well, the chorus and bridge stated:

Chorus:
Give me faith, to trust what you say
That your good, and your love is great
I'm broken inside, I give you my life

Bridge:
I may be weak, but your spirit's strong in me.
My flesh may fail, but my God you never will.

The verses of the song were a reminder of our need for the Lord, and our need to be broken and ready for what he has for us and the plans in our lives. Check out the song below! We need to be sure that this is on our minds and that we don't make God the “X Factor”... What a great reminder that we need to find our strength in him, where every good and perfect thing flows from.

It was also exciting and encouraging to hear that another pastor from Harvest London is going to be doing some street evangelism up in the Barrie area! I hope to see you all out there as we share the love of Christ with those who don't know him. It's our job to go out and make disciples, so I encourage you to do so if you have the time! Check out the Extreme Team Mission info for August 12-13 here. For more info, contact them here.

On that note, make sure you're also praying for Julie Tyne as she heads out to Siera Leon with Mercy Ships for about three months to bring the Word there.  We gathered to pray for her after the services.  And don't forget to pray for Pastor Todd and Cheryl as they finish up their time in Scotland and begin their long trek home, then down to Lynchburg, to take their eldest son, Joel, back to Liberty University!

Well it was wonderful to have the air conditioning back!  Quite a shock to the system when I dressed for semi-arid desert extremes again!  Jordan said it was a beautiful day when the worship team arrived but they were later surprised by the fast moving rain storm that caused a couple of power interruptions just before first service.  It pays to come really early because I was on time for first and still got wet!  I’m not sure second service attendees even knew it rained!

I was pumped to hear the report from our youth team.  So cool that we love the gospel and celebrated when Emilie told about the girl who responded and accepted Christ.  I love that about this church!  Isn’t what Josh described as “blessing going both ways” exactly what happens to us?

Mike’s message (listen here) about how I still need the gospel to change me was set up perfectly by celebrating communion together.  It reminded me of this quote by Jeff Temple in a devotional about parenting:

“My boys know the gospel, but don’t yet comprehend the importance of living it out daily.  The gospel is more of a concept to them, the big picture of salvation as a ticket to Heaven, but it has not become a daily reality to them as sinners guilty of treason before God in continual need of grace, forgiveness and redemptive sanctification.”

It certainly is easy to fall into that trap.  I need the gospel today!  I’m looking forward to sharing in small group about how God’s grace showed in my life this week.  I’m glad this is a place people don’t have to pretend that we’re all perfect.

There are lots of people who need the gospel and one way we are taking it to them is through the possibility of putting a campus close to them.  Another prayer meeting about the Clearview Township campus happened last night.  Heard it was a sweet time of calling on God together and I hear there is another one next Sunday night.

As Mike reminded us: “Pray for Pastor Todd preaching in Scotland.”  It’s a practical way to be a partner.  And don’t miss this coming Sunday with Pastor Norm Millar from Harvest London!

Peace,

Eutychus

Nothing like a "mildly warm" day to get together for church yesterday.

It was amazing to hear from Jordan Coros about how great the turnout was for our Food Drive Flash Mob for the Barrie Food Bank on Saturday.  Many of you showed up and three truckloads of food were gathered - the Food Bank was so pumped to be blessed by this and the number we're hearing is that the total weight of the food collected was 3000 lbs - glory to God!  Missed out?  Bring your non-perishable food items to church this Sunday.

Mike's message from Galatians 1:1-9 was all about how nothing compares to the Gospel - it has the power to dislodge idols and completely transform the way we think, act and interact with our world.  We all need to deeply grasp that our salvation, our hope, our wholeness as people rest in the Gospel - no other truth is more important for us to grasp.

Mike mentioned "The Cross-Centered Life: Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing" by C.J. Mahaney.  You may want to check it out for some summer reading.

Forever Reign is one of the songs Jordan Donald and the team led us in - it's a message of the Gospel of grace - check it out.

Keep in mind the prayer meetings for the Collingwood/Wasaga Beach campus.  The next two are scheduled for Sunday, July 31 and Sunday, August 7.  Info here.

It was also cool to see John Coros and Ken Rounds affirmed as deacons - how great is it that both these men got saved at our church and have served faithfully for years?!  That's the gospel at work.

God is good.

It was another powerful Sunday as we wrapped up our time in Esther yesterday.  It was cool to see so many standing in response to the Word as we considered each of those failures we face.  If you haven't heard the message because you were away, check it out here.  Each of the messages in the three week series are available here.

Pastor Todd let us know that the whole "Not Going Back" series in Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther will close on Labour Day weekend with a message on Psalm 126--the hymn that the returning exiles sang about God's restoration.

The reason we're waiting awhile for that final message is because Pastor Todd is taking his annual preaching break for the next six weeks.  No new sermon prep for him for a bit.  He'll be heading off with Cheryl to Scotland for some vacation and to preach at Harvest Bible Chapel Glasgow. If you missed it, check out last week's blog from Pastor Scott Hamilton, senior pastor at Harvest Glasgow.

Back here in Barrie we'll be sitting under the teaching ministry of Mike Armstrong on July 24 and 31, Norm Millar on August 7, Jon Miller on August 14, and Roger Freeman on August 21 and 28.  It is a great line up and we'll be hearing some great preaching.

Having mentioned Mike, it was so good to see his name in the bulletin to affirm him as a pastor. He has served so well as both the student ministries director and now as family ministries director.  If all goes well, the elders will lay hands on him in an upcoming service. Sometimes when you "lay hands on" someone it is a bad thing, but this is a very good thing.

Back to the sermon for a sec...Pastor Todd mentioned the book, The Hiding Place. It is the story of Corrie Ten Boom and her family hiding Jews during World War II. It is a powerful story of forgiveness.  Great summer reading if you're looking for things for your reading list.

Word is that the Harvest office is on the move again.  I heard about an email from one staff team member who wrote, "Well, it is that time of year again when we pack up all our things and move the office." Punchy! This time is should be semi-permanent as the team moves into the space at 258 Bayfield Street.  Watch for news about the actual move date.

And one final note, the Flash Mob Food Drive is happening this Saturday. Don't miss this fun event. Here are the details from the main page of our website. We intentionally landed on a July drive to bless the food bank at a time that no one else is thinking about them. Let's fill those trucks, Harvest, and show our love.

Wait, one more final note.  Was anyone else hot in there on Sunday? The temps, according to the guy I met with the six thermometers placed strategically around the building were 78 to 82 F. Pretty warm.  The staff is working with our landlords at TCS to find a solution.  Thanks for your patience as we work it out. Have a great week! Stay cool.

Grace,

It was another great time of worship and of being the church this past Sunday as we continued our look into the Book of Esther. Pastor Todd took us to the Word to examine the lives of Mordecai and Esther, and he challenged us about how we normally look at these supposed “heroes” of the story. If you missed it, check out the message audio.

The worship time included a time of open mic sharing of favourite verses on God’s faithfulness. It was powerful to hear so many voices lifting up the Word of God. To those who shared, thanks for doing that.

It was also amazing to have Amber sing and Jordan, Travis and Victor accompany her for that high impact song, Your Hands, which we heard during the message. Here’s the original artist JJ Heller singing it. If the song impacted you, you can buy it for $0.99 on iTunes. Worth it!

It was good to see Travis Doucette on team playing keys too. Travis is a member here at Harvest but we only really see him around Christmas and in the summer. He lives in Lynchburg, Virginia, is a member at Thomas Road Baptist Church there and works as a prof in the worship faculty at Liberty University. Always a blessing to have him with us.

At the end of the worship service we prayed for our youth mission team which is now in Bradford for the week running a Vacation Bible School there in partnership with CrossTrainers Ministries. We’re grateful for our partnership with this ministry and with Harvest members Josh and April Schrader who are part of the fulltime team there.

And Sunday night there was a special prayer gathering in Nottawa as the elders and a group of eager Clearview Township people prayed about a Harvest campus in the Collingwood-Wasaga Beach area.  It was so encouraging to see those who came and to think about the possibilities for making disciples and church planting there.

And before I let you go, Harvest Bible Chapel Muskoka commissioned her first elders yesterday. Our elder chair, Terry Codling, was there to lay hands on these men. Pastor Todd was an elder there since the church launched in 2008.

And if you’re looking for a cool thing to do this week, Pastor Ron Zappia, who planted the first Harvest Bible Chapel in 2000 in Naperville, Illinois, is speaking up at Muskoka Bible Centre (MBC). Call them for details on when he is speaking.

Did anyone else notice it was a little warm in the room on Sunday? Those upfront preaching and leading worship sure did. The staff is working with Timothy Christian School (our landlords) to rectify the situation.

Hope that wherever you are, you’re enjoying this gorgeous week of summer.

To him be glory!

Pastor Todd said, “We are not going to go easy on preaching the word in July are we?”  The Word of God never needs a rest and I always need the Word in me.  We cannot afford to take a holiday from God’s Word, so I am excited about making it a priority!

One thought from the message that really gripped me is that “I am not defined by my failures”. How many of us see ourselves in light of our failures instead of faithfully living out our identity in Christ?  I know that is a struggle for me, yet my point of failure is exactly the point where God’s grace touches my life most powerfully.  (If you missed it, listen to the message here.)

I still have to deal with my tendency to over-indulge just like that king dude in Esther.  These questions Todd gave to apply to various areas of my life are pretty significant for testing how I am doing:

1. Do I find myself wanting this thing more and more?
2. Have I become defensive when questioned about it?
3. Do I think life will be boring without it?
4. What have I neglected in order to spend time doing this thing?
5. Do I use this thing to manipulate my feelings?
6. Can I set this aside for a significant period of time?

I asked myself, “What is the one thing I need to test myself in by having a fast from it?”  What do you need to fast from?

One last thing: Todd said that, “We need to confess our sins to one another”.  Who will I call?  Who will you call?

And what do you need to do if someone calls you and confesses?  Here are some suggestions:

1. Don’t panic!  If you are not ready to receive it, politely tell the person.  If you are ready, listen and then pray with the person.
2. Ask them what kind of follow-up they would like.  Do they want ongoing accountability, ie – regular phone calls, or would they like extended help?
3. Ask how you can help them take the next step or even find out what the next step is.
4. Continue to pray for them and set a date to ask them how they are doing.

I sure am glad to know that it is God changing me, otherwise this would be too scary.  I’m not going to let lack of faith or fear hold me back.  Let’s grow together!

And don’t forget to watch for more details on the Food Bank Drive for July 23!

Peace,

Eutychus

Wow, huge Sunday.  First, we celebrated communion.  A great call for us to not let communion become routine.  The forgiveness we received at the cross should never get stale.  We also had baptisms galore - how cool was it to see people step up to the plate spontaneously as they obeyed the command to identify publicly with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  You can listen to some of the testimonies by clicking on the audio file below.  So cool.

Todd's final message in Nehemiah was another great reminder about persevering in our love for God and others.  You might remember the example we heard from Hudson Taylor's life.  He sought to pray as if everything depended on the praying and work as if everything depended on the working.  A great way to live our lives - no holding back, no wasting time - living full out for God at all times.

Todd also mentioned the book, The Valley of Vision and this quote,"O my God, I bid farewell to sin by clinging to his cross, hiding in his wounds, and sheltering in his side."

And if all that didn't make everything huge enough, we also got to welcome Jordan and Roxie Donald to the team - they officially join our staff this week and I know we're all psyched to get to know them and worship with them.  Be sure to connect with them soon and show them how pumped you are to have them aboard.

Can't wait for next Sunday already - see you then.

Nothing says, “Harvests Loves” like ice cream! And not that pre-packaged, out of the box stuff but hand-scooped Baskin-Robbins ice cream! If you missed being with the church on Sunday, you missed a sweet treat!

Pastor Todd preached on celebration from Nehemiah 12:27-47 laying down what biblical, God-honouring celebration should look like. The notes and audio of that message are all here.  At the end of the message, we concluded with a couple of energized worship songs and then…ice cream!

As a church we witnessed the dedication of four baby girls. Word is that we are on a run of baby girl births lately although a baby boy was born just this past week to break a streak that has gone on for months. We rejoiced with the Desota family in the dedication of Alivia, the Armstrongs in the dedication of Karis, the Minnemas with Peyton, and the McAdams with Sophie. Thanking God for each one. A great Father’s Day celebration!

And as part of what we do as a church family on Father’s Day, we blessed each of the single dads in the church with a $50 gift card to Canadian Tire.

The Pregnancy Resource Centre was collecting the baby bottles that they handed out on Mother’s Day. Looked like a nice haul of coin…and cheques…from our Harvest family. This ministry reaches out to girls and guys who are in a tough spot with an unplanned pregnancy. Love this ministry!

All that to say, there were a ton of things going on and the spirit in the place was one of joy and celebration. Our great God blessed us with his presence.

To him be glory!

With all the focus on the vision God is laying on our hearts it sure was good to be reminded of something that is foundational to that.  Thank you Mike for pointing us to God’s steadfast love as the basis for our love for God and each other!  (Listen to the message here.) Everything we do is really a response to what God is and has already done for us.  Thank you for pointing out that I can do that by living out this year’s theme!  I looked over some of the new practical examples of how we are doing that here: www.harvestloves.ca.

The bulletin was stuffed with information too!  Pretty cool that two of our deacon candidates have been saved since Harvest started and are now stepping into these leadership roles.  You might guess who they are.  I’m excited to recognize them because they have already been stepping up!

The elder insert challenged me to pray so I took the nine initiatives off the web page provided here: www.harvestbarrie.ca/vision, and copied them into my prayer journal. I will pray about them and for our elders.  I hope lots of people tear off the bottom of the sheet and hand them in with notes.  This is a great way to share my comments, questions and of course; joys, burdens and concerns.

There were lots of our people on the road yesterday.  Pastor Todd and Cheryl were coming back from his message planning retreat. They also made it to Jordan and Roxie’s wedding.  Some people here are counting sleeps till Jordan is on site.  I am too because I’m into “window-rattling worship”!

There were a bunch of our ladies driving back from a conference in Kentucky.  They sounded somewhat excited about what they learned.  Apparently we’re going to be hearing, “You go girl!” a lot around here.  Excitement is good – and there’s a lot of that in the air! Now it’s time to bring the heat, since summer isn’t.  :-)

Peace and joy,

A Wild Vision Sunday

Well where do I begin about Sunday?!  If any one of the following things happened it would have been a day to remember but there were at least three things that really stood out.

First off, down at Harvest U last month our very own Todd Dugard was chosen by all the Harvest Senior Pastors around the world as the 2011 Harvest Bible Chapel Senior Pastor of the Year - a fun and cool distinction in the spirit of 1 Timothy 5:17 which says, "Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching."  We saw a video from James MacDonald giving a shout out to Todd  and if that wasn't enough, Terry Codling stood up and presented Todd with a new iPad 2 as a gift from our church, thanking him for all his service, endurance and perseverance.  Just when we all thought it was over Terry then presented Todd and Cheryl with the keys to a new car in order to be obedient to the part about showing double honour.  Wow/crazy/cool/emotional/powerful.  The audio of all that is right here.

(This is where you can pause for a second and catch your breath.)

Somehow Todd managed to then pull it together to deliver the message (listen to it here) which was all about the theme verse for next year from Ephesians 3:20-21 which says, "Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Not done yet.

The message then turned to nine initiatives that the elders feel God has laid on their hearts in terms of the direction of Harvest Barrie. These are nine things that our church is committed to seeing happen in our future. You really need to check out our website for a full run down of all nine initiatives including photos and videos highlighting some amazing things God is doing.

It really was an incredible time together and a day we won't soon forget as a church.  Truly a huge blessing from the Lord and we want to be sure to give him all the glory and praise for who he is and what he's doing.

One more thing - be sure to pray for Todd this week as he and Cheryl head down to Michigan this week as Todd spends this week working on the teaching calendar for next year.  Always great to see how the Holy Spirit lays it out for Todd, then impacts us with it all year long.

To him be glory,

Eutychus

Wow!  What an incredible time we had yesterday. Celebrating communion just seemed to tie up last week’s events and lead us right into this week’s service.

I talked to one lady who was helping out in the music room with those who responded.  She wanted to leave so she could see the baptisms from up front.  Pastor Roger offered her a backstage pass so she could watch from the wings and celebrate as they came out.  That’s a good way to get really wet!

It is so good to see people obey the Lord as many did yesterday by responding to Pastor Todd's declaration that today was the day...for salvation and baptism.  Eleven people left the service part way through the message and then at the end of the service were baptized. At least three of those who responded are the fruit of this past Easter. God is always working and we get to join him.  Don’t be slow in signing up for our next baptism in the fall.  Several have already indicated they are in.  I know those being baptized and those helping them sure appreciate the Darlingtons and all the work they do to set up and tear down the hot tub.  They are such gracious hosts during the service for the ones being baptized.

At the end of the service there was a further call to make the commitment to membership, small groups, serving and giving.  It was encouraging to see the response as people signed up for all these things.  If you missed Sunday, you can listen online as always.  And if you're still thinking about some of what you heard, links to the audio and to more info can be found below.

Our leaders were part of a Builders meeting last night.  I can’t wait to find out what they heard.  There is no way I am going to miss this Sunday - Vision Sunday.  I’m coming early to get a good seat up front. Of course I’ll move in to the center to make room for others because we are going to need every seat.

God has great things in store.  We are all building this local body.  I’m sure there is a place for every willing heart and hand.  I’m signing on the line.  Are you in?

It was an incredible time together on Sunday as our elders stood in front of the church in the midst of the sermon and took responsibility on behalf of the church for our sins of the past. I heard several people commented that they had never experienced anything like it before.

I’m going to keep today’s blog short because the content of the message from Nehemiah 9 and the ‘16 Confessions’ really says it all.  You can check out both right here.  If you were not here for Sunday, be sure to listen to the sermon and pass it along to anyone else who you think might benefit from hearing it.

It was so good to have Jordan and Roxie here too. Jordan led us in some powerful, Christ-exalting worship. They are here hunting down a place to live in anticipation of their move here at the end of June when Jordan assumes the role of worship director. Pray for them both as they marry June 9. Jordan begins leading worship regularly the first Sunday in July.

Hope you’re enjoying your Victoria Day Monday. I sure am.

It’s hard to believe that since last Sunday we've been all the way to Chicago and back.  I learned so much at Harvest University!  It was cool to see people we hear all about and some we know.  Trevor Peacock and Josh Goossen from Harvest Calgary were there.   Josh is getting married soon :-)  That means we won’t be seeing Samantha Dalby around here anymore. :-(

Speaking of getting married, there was a bunch of people in church who were celebrating the night before with Steve Gallant and Amy Bryson, at their wedding.     Hey, and that reminds me, we were hanging out with Jordan Donald at Harvest U. I heard yesterday that he and Roxi are going to be here next Sunday. There is talk of just keeping them here but they are going back to get married and pack before joining us to stay in June.

It was really great to walk in and find Daryl Molyneaux would be preaching to us.  I saw him graduating in Chicago from the School of Ministry.   It seems to me that the Harvest Bible Fellowship is serious about planting churches and making sure they equip men to do a great job.  It sure sounds like he is excited about the Niagara region. He’s even excited about Barrie!

He really got me thinking about what my role should be in God’s work.  “It’s not about me, but it requires me!”  I do have a part to fulfill.  I am the body so it is my mission.  “God has no back-up kneecaps or third string thumbs.”  I’ll definitely remember that phrase!

I think God is speaking to our church, because these points sounded a little like something I heard a short while ago. Four reasons we don’t engage:

1. I don’t really believe it myself.
2. I fear human rejection.
3. I feel unworthy.
4. I am unsure of what to say.

I am going to go pray that God will give me eyes to see the need, give me a restless heart so I don’t hold back, and show me which reason is stopping me.  Then I am going to practice explaining what God did in my life so I can start with that in telling others about him.  I’ve already started my list of people to share with. Who is on your list?

Coming to you today from Elgin, IL where we're all set for the start of Harvest University 2011.  Check back here each day for updates from the conference.  I've heard something about Roving Reporters so you'll be able to get a real taste of what's going on.  Start making plans now to get here yourself next year!

On Sunday Todd mentioned something based on a quote from Charles Spurgeon that was a real beauty:
The guilt, fear and shame we bear simply arise from neglect of the Bible and are the result of ignorance.  No one can read the Bible, be open to what the Spirit is saying through it, and not come away changed.
How true. We talk about the Word of God and its importance so often but are we really living lives that are submitted to it… completely?

Too often I find that I read it legalistically – to just be able to say that I read a chapter or two today, as though God is impressed by my performance.  Or I find that my mind can easily wander as I read… I only half-listen as Todd said (not sure about you, but for me that was the point I snapped out of it and started fully listening…).

So why should you or I really be studying our Bibles?  Why should I get up early in the morning or stay up late to read it? Well, it can’t be just about knowing a bunch of facts and being able to sound smart in my small group breakout.  It’s because we’re drawn more deeply into our relationship with God because of it.  That’s the point.  It’s been said that Bible study is not the end, but rather the means to an end – the end being a tighter relationship with our creator.  I find that this is something I have to remind myself of over and over again.  I’m not just reading words on a page.  I’m entering the presence of the Lord.  And it’s there where I’m changed, it’s there where I meet Christ face to face.  If I’m open to it.  If I’m submitted.

I love that verse in Psalm 84:10 that says, “For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.” In other words, being together for worship on a Sunday is better than a thousand days at the beach or anywhere else that might seem amazing. There’s nothing like being with God’s people for worship of our great and amazing God!

So there are a bunch of things that stood out from our time together on Sunday.

Be sure to sign up for the city-wide prayer walk on Saturday, May 14. Go to www.barriechristiancouncil.org to pick your streets and to find tips on how to prayer walk. In cooperation with other churches in the city of Barrie, the goal is to pray for every home, every business, every church, every school in one day.

We were introduced to Beth Anne Freeman who was in town for the women’s retreat at the Fern Resort on Saturday. Beth Anne is a member at Harvest Bible Chapel in Elgin, Illinois. The women report an amazing time together during their one-day retreat. Including being blessed by the four men on the worship team who gave their day to serve the women! On behalf of the women, thanks, guys.

Lots of photos here.

As for Sunday and Pastor Todd’s message, Love Works from Nehemiah 6-7, we heard loud and clear that those who follow Christ also work for Christ. He talked at one point about the five reasons people don't work for Christ and that it originates with a fear within us:
  1. I don’t have much to offer (fear of what others think);
  2. I’ve been burned in the past (fear of being burned again);
  3. I don’t have time (fear of being too busy);
  4. I won’t be very good at it (fear of failure); and
  5. I might be good at it (fear of success/it may require more of me).
Maybe you’ve already decided to join the 74% of members and regular attendees he spoke of as already being engaged in ministry. What do I do if I'm ready to start working? Simply or Connections on Sunday and say that you want to serve Christ. If you’re looking to grow in your understanding of your spiritual gifts, we’ll be offering our class on that soon. But don’t wait for the class to start before you start serving! Pick up the Work for Christ booklet at Connections or download it here and then jump in and start loving on your fellow believers through your work.

And for those who are serving, the staff team is hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Event on Friday, June 17. Invitations have gone out to everyone 18 years of age and up who serve in some ministry here at Harvest. We’re looking forward to celebrating the great things God is doing through these great servants of Christ that night.

During the message, Pastor Todd shared a bit of a teaser about a vision that the elders will be presenting to the church to lead us forward into the coming years. Be sure to check out the audio of the message to hear what he said.

The first of two key events related to that is the Sunday, May 29 Builders’ Meeting. Anyone who serves as a leader in any of our ministries at Harvest will be invited to come and be briefed on this vision plan and to pray that God leads us powerfully in the coming days to fulfill the ministry he has given us as a church. And second, on Sunday, June 5, Pastor Todd will be opening God’s Word to the theme verse for the coming ministry year and sharing the elders’ vision plan with the church as a whole. It will be a do-not-miss Sunday!

That’s it. I’m heading out to see if they spelled my name right on the voters’ list. Don’t forget to VOTE TODAY! Winston Churchill said, “It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government…except for all the others that have been tried.” What a privilege and responsibility we have today to exercise our democratic rights and thus celebrate the freedom God has given us in Canada.

I hope all of you were able to take in at least one of the services at Harvest Barrie over the weekend. Everyone is talking about how great the services were.  I had no idea Psalm 1 was a favourite for so many people.  I saw several Bibles that had the whole thing highlighted or underlined.  Good thing it was up on the screen because you could hardly still read it in their Bibles.

Here are some images from Friday and Sunday.

Good Friday / Easter Sunday 2011

(Click "stop slideshow" above when you're finished viewing the photos for greater ease in reading the rest of the blog.)

Is it wrong to feel that celebrating communion on Good Friday is somehow more special and meaningful than at other times?  I have to agree with so many that the song Chad Ballantyne sang underscored the point of Friday’s message.  He gave his life – for me.  No surprise to me that Chad wrote it.  Our teams have depth!  The audio for the song and the lyrics are at the bottom of this blog.  It sure brings back the day I made it personal and trusted Christ.  It was great to hear of some who did just that this weekend.  One grandfather praying for his grandson since he was born saw his prayers answered second service on Sunday.

And Sunday was incredible!  There were so many visitors and I saw everyone making them feel at home and helping them find their way around and talking to them.  The buzz after all the services was a beautiful thing to hear.

One of the special elements from both days was a video created based on Psalm 1.  Much thanks to Tyler Steingard for his creative work on this.

One other thing you may have noticed on Friday was the rain stick.  More info about this interesting addition to our worship team can be found here.

We certainly are blessed people.  But it all comes from Christ.  This question from the small group curriculum kind of points out how we get to that place: What is the secret of becoming blessed?  Psalm 1:2, Galatians 2:20, Galatians 5:24, Philippians 3:9-11. You can see the rest of them, listen to the messages and take some time to reflect on how great this weekend was for both Good Friday and Easter Sunday here. He gave his life – He gives us life! And I know how precious that is!

(If you weren't there but you've heard people talking about "that song from Friday", this is the one.  Lyrics here and audio below.)

Because of me

They spat upon his face
stripped him in disgrace
and they beat him more than any man could take

His foes yelled "crucify him!"
friends betrayed him and denied him
though innocent, silent he remained

On his back a robe was thrown
on his head a crown of thorns
oh, tell me what were these soldiers thinking of

For his accusers didn't know
that for their sake he took their blows
and the blood that flowed was mixed with tears of love

Chorus:
Oh why, did he give his life away
why was he crucified - was there no other way
oh, why, why did he come to earth knowing the price he had to pay
oh, the answer brings me to my knees for i know...
It was because of me

On the way up to the hill
Jesus stumbled and fell
and so another was chosen to carry the cross for him

And though the weight was gone
Christ knew it wouldn't be long
that he would have to bear the whole world and all her

Oh they mocked his holy name
behind, the solders played their games
and the hammer swung and drove the nails through

But with compassion in his eyes and to everyone's surprise
he said forgive them father for they know not what they do

And now I know why he gave his life that day
I know why he was crucified there was no other way
I know why, why he came to earth knowing the price he had to pay
and the answer brings me to my knees
for i know... It was because of me

Was a great time together on Sunday as we were led in worship by Chris Somers, worship director from Harvest Bible Chapel York Region. We also heard another message in our “Love Unleashed” series from the book of Nehemiah.

Seems some people who heard the message took it upon themselves to post Facebook status updates and to Tweet the phrase, "I want what God wants".  It is pretty challenging thought when applied to every area of my life. And Pastor Todd shared some pretty helpful points from Nehemiah's action plan that will help anyone in the midst of conflict or challenge.

When confronting follow these principles from Nehemiah 5:
  • Be specific v7c
  • Face to face v7d
  • Make an appeal to
    • the conscience v8
    • sense of community
    • to their worship of God v9a; and the mission to make disciples v9b
  • Have a specific action plan v10-11
  • Establish accountability v12b
  • Seal the deal with a formal prayer of commitment v13a
The nation of Israel was saved from the internal opposition and conflict because they followed Nehemiah’s leadership. These six principles will no doubt save any people who get into a bad spot.

It was kind of cool to have Pastor James MacDonald delivering a video announcement for Harvest University. If you're reading this on Monday, it isn't too late to sign on to attend this amazing ministry conference at Harvest in Chicago. and let her know you’re wanting to go or to get more information.

And the PUSH is on. Good Friday and Easter Sunday are just days away.  Take those invitation cards you've been given and get them out there to the people around you who don't yet know Jesus as their Saviour.  Todd encouraged us to think about the empty chairs around the auditorium and to pray and do our part to see that every chair is filled on Easter Sunday.  There's even a Facebook event page you can point your friends to.

Looking forward to seeing you Good Friday at 9 and 11:15 a.m. and Easter Sunday at 9 and 11:15 a.m..  The theme for this year is “He Gave HIS Life…He gave US Life” from Psalm 1. Be praying for the guests who will come and for all who are involved in these important gatherings of remembrance and celebration.

Have a great week! Press on.

Good times this Sunday.  And by "good" I mean, "deeply convicting and uncomfortable."  Chapter 4 from Nehemiah really pressed me to the mat and wouldn't let me up.  Nothing like facing the reality that the comfortable opposition-free Christian life I've been living is nowhere near the life Jesus lived.  Or his disciples.  Or his early church... not to mention Nehemiah and the Israelites themselves. God put on the heart of Nehemiah to rebuild the wall and finally get things moving in the right direction for the nation of Israel.  No more dragging their feet, no more wasting time - no more excuses - only a life lived in surrender to God and his game plan for their lives.

So thankfully there were no issues and the wall went up without a hitch. Oh wait... in Chapter 4 they encountered problems. Sanballat and his lackeys oppose the work of God and really get in the face of Nehemiah and the workers.  Ever feel that way?  God lays something on your heart - he calls you to action, but then what happens?  Problems.  Opposition. The thing we need to understand deeply is that opposition in our lives to the work God is doing is the norm.  Todd mentioned that one of the ways we need to stay strong and keep going when the going gets tough is to rehearse the truth in our hearts and minds constantly.  Nehemiah did this in verse 14 when he said, "Remember the Lord, who is great in awesome." Todd gave us seven ways to rehearse the truth at any moment:

1. Trouble and persecution are guaranteed for Christ followers (John 16:33, 15:20)
2. The gospel is foolishness to those whom the spirit is not working (1 Corinthians 1:18, 1 Peter 2:8)
3. The hatred and opposition is directed at the Lord first (John 15:18)
4. God will execute justice  - our task is to love our enemies (Romans 12:19)
5. Christ has overcome the world and will give us grace when we need it (Matt 10:19)
6. God loves us and is for us (Romans 8:31)
7. Something amazing awaits us on the other side of eternity (Romans 8:18)

Maybe this is something you could print out and stick in your Bible as a reminder this week.  We will have more boldness and more passion to stand firm for God and live for him when these truths permeate the depths of our hearts.  Are you doing that?  Am I?  Like I said, "deeply convicting and uncomfortable."

Good worship today too.  Be sure to check out this song that fit so well with the message.

Some reminders:
Check out Harvest University and if you're able to join us.
Choose your streets and sign up for the Barrie Prayer Walk on May 14.
Take action with the Easter invitations.  Who is your hardest person to invite?  Invite them!

It was a great Sunday.  Make it a great week.  Press on.

I thought it was pretty funny yesterday, that Pastor Roger talked about another first century guy that had a small group like me.  Mine was actually a pretty large group, which tends to happen when you have a good preacher like Paul!  (Though he didn’t exactly keep my attention!)  What is most important about our small groups is that they are different from any other kind of group because they are sharing in the life of Jesus together.  We really are all “in him”.  It’s intriguing to think about what kind of difference that makes when we meet together.

It also gave communion a whole different sense.  Celebrating together that we are forgiven because Jesus has the authority to forgive us – and has! – also emphasized the unity we have through him.  Being on a team that is bringing people to Jesus for forgiveness is great!

By the way, did you catch the significance of Pastor Todd’s message from Haiti?  Here is what he wrote:
I watched as Haitian pastors walked up to put their own offering into a cardboard box at the front of the worship centre.  Today I'll see the same happen in a church in Deschapelles.
Listen to what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 8:2-5.
For in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.
I cannot help but see that this is the Haitian church giving toward relief of the saints in Japan. Out of their extreme poverty giving beyond their means, willingly, joyfully! It is amazing to see. This is not about whether or not Japan is a resilient, industrialized nation that will bounce back. This is about the followers of Christ standing with the church in their time of need. It is our love tangibly expressed for the body of Christ and thereby witnessing to the world of the love of Jesus Christ (John 13:35).

Let's give out of our abundance and bring glory to the name!

What a great opportunity for us to stand with the church in Haiti and help the church in Japan.  We raised over $8,000 for this goal!  We probably still have some work to do to keep up to those Haitians! If you want to read the day by day updates from Tom Kim in Japan the CHC web site is http://churcheshelpingchurches.com.   If you still have a gift you can bring it on Sunday, give online or just press the “Canada Helps” logo on the web site.

Good Friday is just four weeks away.  Make sure a friend or neighbor or workmate gets the invitation that was in the bulletin.

Shortly after that the churches of Barrie will be joining together to pray for the whole city in one day on May 14!  Go to www.BarrieChristianCouncil.org/PrayerWalk to sign up for your streets.  (I’ll be including a third floor walk-up on Troas Ave!)

There was a great time of prayer last night at Timothy Christian School.  Without prayer, nothing else matters!  I’m looking forward to hearing how God answers the prayers we have been praying.

Peace,

Eutychus

Walls can keep out just about everything - except on Sunday morning during the Scripture reading first service when we happened to pick up the sound frequency of some teaching from our Spiritual Disciplines class down the hall... Even the thick walls at church yesterday morning couldn't stop that.  It was a pretty funny moment actually, but I doubt the Israelites in the book of Nehemiah saw anything funny about their wall situation.  Twelve years after the book of Ezra ends they still aren't able to rest securely as a community, all because the walls around Jerusalem weren't built.  Nehemiah hears about the people's "great trouble and shame" because of this and he's broken up about it.

Far too often I find myself the opposite of Nehemiah... people all around me are in distress and I'd rather catch some Zzz's on a window ledge somewhere rather than show some heartfelt concern.  How do I shake myself from this??  In 1:5, Nehemiah appeals to God's steadfast love and how he keeps his covenant with us IF we love and obey him.  Having concern for our neighbour and praying for them is great, but I also need to obey God's command and actually show them love with my actions.  Much for me to chew on this week... I'm looking forward to this Nehemiah series.

We also sang the song "You are Saviour which you can check out right here.

I'm sure you're all aware of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan a week ago.  Churches Helping Churches is stepping up with an opportunity for us to help the churches in Japan.  As in Haiti, many organizations are there to help with infrastructure repairs but who will help the church...except the church?  This Sunday, rather than taking up our HOPE offering as we usually do on the last Sunday of the month, we will be taking up a special offering for the churches in Japan.  (To give online, please for instructions.)  You can check out the plans for helping in Japan on the Churches Helping Churches website.  As Pastor Todd mentioned Sunday morning, CHC reports that the churches in Haiti have already committed to being part of this offering for Japan.  Please pray and plan this week for what you can give on Sunday.

After the service we had some prayer at the front for Pastor Todd who is heading out to Haiti Wednesday to preach at a Churches Helping Pastors conference - pray for him as he travels and prepares to also preach at a Haitian church Sunday morning as well.

Remember, we also have the scrolls at the front of the auditorium for anyone to sign in the next couple of weeks too.  Check out the first two messages in March to catch up on what that's about.

Choose Your Own Adventure is a series of children’s stories where the reader makes choices that determine the main character’s actions.  The series sold 250 million copies in the 1980s and 1990s.

Yesterday at Harvest Barrie we concluded the series Worship Rises from the book of Ezra and as we reached the end of this particular story we found that the conclusion of this adventure was to be determined by us.

Last week’s message (March 6) set us up for a week of meditation on six heart-hindrances that will keep us from truly worshipping God. And in the final verses of Ezra 10 we find a list of names of the people who recognized their sin, repented before God and pledged to do something about it.  Yesterday Pastor Todd led us through a similar experience.  In both services the front of the worship centre was filled as people moved to tables to sign their names as a pledge to respond to what God had showed them over the week.

If you missed yesterday, you can listen to the message online.  When you get to the end of the message, get your pen and join those who have made a commitment for change.  If you were at church yesterday, this song will be significant to you.

Monday morning may have greeted you with some questions about what you should do next to keep the commitment you made yesterday.  Here are three steps to get you off on the right foot.

Radical Amputation – What sin did you name?  Where possible, you need to cut off the source of that sin.  This involves getting specific and calling sin out for what it is and then removing any triggers for that sin that exist in your life.  Maybe you’ve identified a moral issue that needs to be controlled (Matthew 15:19).  Resources, like Covenant Eyes, are available to help with both content and the amount of time spent on your computer.

Radical Accountability – Who will you tell?  We all need help to overcome our flesh.  This doesn’t happen in an instant and we need the help and motivation that comes from having someone walk along beside us.  Maybe you’ve identified a problem with your words and the way you speak to others (Matthew 15:18).  You will find that this will be more successfully battled after being shared with someone in your small group who knows you well and can draw it to your attention when they hear your words getting out of control.

Radical Adoration – Who will you worship?  This is the crux of the matter.  It is always a worship issue.  Perhaps you identified a lack of generosity within yourself (Matthew 6:21) indicating that it may be things or money that you are worshipping. Only when we make Christ the centre point of worship will we get the story right.

Lots of changed lives at Harvest yesterday.  Did you catch this quote? “I don’t want to be just watching what God is doing. I have been refusing to humble myself and deal with things. No more. Now is the time. I’m not putting it off another day.”  Don’t get left behind, just watching what God is doing in the lives around you.  Now is the time.

Around the world people were following #tsunami over the weekend to keep up with what was happening in Japan and in other countries that found themselves in the path of the tsunami. Churches Helping Churches will be announcing our response to the Japan crisis over the next few days. They report that the churches in Haiti are eager to get on board to help out their sister churches in Japan.  Wondering how to pray for Japan?  Check out this post from desiringgod.org.

Whatever you’re doing for March Break, come back hungry on Sunday for Love Unleashed, next in our Not Going Back theme .  Read Nehemiah 1 to get ready.

Peace,

Eutychus

As I sat in the service I noticed an irony at work. While Pastor Todd was preaching on the hindrances to worship, there were several unintended hindrances happening right in the room!  Our tech team would tell you that it was “just one of those days” when things went sideways a bit.  Doesn’t happen very often, but just kind of funny that it happened on this particular day.

And, by the way, the tech team members are gold!

As for the message in Ezra 9, there were a couple of key parts that bear reviewing with a mind to responding to what we heard. The six heart-hindrances that Pastor Todd taught us are:
1. The heart is where generosity starts  – Matt 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
2.     The heart is where all of our words start – Matt 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart
3.     The heart is where right moral choices start – Matt 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
4.     The heart is where forgiveness starts – Matt 18:35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart
5.     The heart is where justice and compassion start – 1 John 3:17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?
6.     The heart is where mission starts – Rom 10:1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

All of these are potential hindrances to worship, and each of us needs to ask. “Are any of them true of me?”  The whole message on audio is available onlline.  And we were encouraged to pray Ezra’s prayer from 9:5-15.  The five key characteristics of that prayer were that it was a grieving prayer, a honest and revealing prayer, a remembering prayer, an agreeing with God prayer, and an accepting of whatever he wants to send my way prayer.  God will honour such a prayer, and he will “brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving.”  In next Sunday’s message we’ll be looking at the people’s response to the hindrance to worship that had been exposed by God’s Word. Each of us are being asked to “consider our ways” over the next seven days. To pray. To fast. To come ready to respond publicly to the preaching of God’s Word.  In your small group you’ll be focusing on the heart-hindrances in your own life.  If you’re not in a small group yet (get in one!), you can still look at the questions that will be used.  I am praying that Sunday will be a worship breakthrough day for many.

In other news…It was great to see our pre-service prayer group walking around the facility on Sunday between 8 and 9 a.m. They are taking prayer "to the streets" so to speak, praying in each classroom, in the foyer, and the worship centre for all that will go on during the course of the morning. At 8:30 a.m. they are gathering together at the front of the worship centre to pray together for God’s power and presence in our worship times.  Anyone can join them for part of that time or the whole time.

We also had the privilege and joy of welcoming some new Harvest members.  These committed Christ-followers have signed on the dotted line saying, “WE’RE IN!” Each of them is pledged to worship Christ, walk with Christ and work for Christ here in our Harvest family.  I’m thanking God for each of them…
  • Jason and Angela Brooks
  • Dannielle Prince
  • Hilary Shewfelt
  • Jim and Ethel Beattie
  • Chris Mason
  • Victor and Corinne Pereira
  • Collin and Michelle Hartwick
  • Steve Gallant
  • Phil and Robin Radford
  • Dan and Fran Courtemanche
And finally, a couple of weeks ago, Pastor Roger told us about one of the first Harvest church planters who is now pastoring in Southern California. Mel Svendsen had a brutal heart attack and was close to death. As you can see from the photo taken March 3, he is home with his amazing family recovering from the attack and subsequent surgery.  God is good! People from all over were praying in earnest for Mel, and we thank God for his grace in Mel’s life and that of his family.

“Why would I throw my body off a perfectly safe piece of land?”

That is a great question and it launched us into our study of Haggai 1-2 yesterday.

As far as I could tell no cell phones went off in either service so I think we were all pretty riveted to the thoughts about “considering our ways”.  Today is a perfect time to hit pause and maybe reflect on our busyness and whether it is really accomplishing God’s purposes for us.

While you are enjoying family time it would be good to remember these blessings Mike shared with us as well:
  • Acts 1:8 – We have the Holy Spirit
  • Psalm 119:105 – We have the Word of God
  • Acts 2:42-47 – We have the people of God
  • Matthew 28:19-20 - We have purpose
You may (or may not) know that we started the service with a video about being worshippers everywhere and all the time.  Of course you would have to have been an “on-time” worshipper to see it.  But you can check out this great song from yesterday to spend some time worshipping right now wherever you are in your day.

The audio for yesterday's message, the sermon notes and small group curriculum are all available on the website. One of the discussions suggested for small groups is this: Share some things we can do to be open for God to stir up our hearts.  (Haggai 1:14) Here's one suggestion: Ask him to.  May God stir up our desires!

By the way, we prayed for Mel Svendson in our services.  He planted the Lake Zurich Harvest Bible Chapel and has recently been pastoring in California.  He suffered a massive heart attack on Saturday evening. He is now stable but will have a long recovery ahead.  Harvest Lake Zurich has updates on their Facebook page.  Thank you for continuing in prayer for Mel and for each other.

Meanwhile, back in Ezra, the story continues.  Watch for our preview blog at the end of this week to see what Pastor Todd has for us this coming Sunday.  He was away this past weekend investing in one of his sons.

It was a great time together Sunday morning for worship at Harvest.

Pastor Todd had us in Ezra 6:13-22 talking about joy. You can hear the message and get the small group questions online.  He shared some definitions of joy and a chart contrasting “happiness” and “joy”. I thought some of you might be looking for this.

“Biblical joy consists of the deep and abiding confidence that all is well regardless of circumstance and difficulty.”  John MacArthur

“Joy is supernatural delight in the person, purposes, and people of God.” James MacDonald

"Joy is the serious business of heaven" G.K. Chesterton

 Happiness
Joy
 emotion  attitude
 requires positive circumstances
 exists even in difficult times
 temporary  lasting
 comes from within ourselves
 comes from the Holy Spirit
Satan wants us to be happy
 Satan would steal our joy

One great thought that Pastor Roger put into the small groups questions was this, “Are there any areas of partial obedience or ‘rebellions large and small’ stealing my joy?” That’s a question I can think about a lot this week.

Dawn and the worship team led us in a new song…powerful. You got the link for that on Friday (the Sunday preview blog as well as the ‘News Updates’ on the front page of the website always have the set list up for you to see before Sunday). Anyway, the lyrics for ‘A Mighty Fortress’ by Christie Nockels are powerful as I said. Check them out and download the song on iTunes. We’ll be doing it again soon.

Our God is a consuming fire,
A burning holy flame, with glory and freedom
Our God is, the only righteous judge,
Ruling over us with kindness and wisdom

We will keep our eyes on you
We will keep our eyes on you

A mighty fortress is our God
A sacred refuge is your name
Your kingdom is unshakable
With you forever we will reign

Our God is jealous for his own
None could comprehend, his love and his mercy
Our God is exalted on his throne
High above the heavens
Forever he's worthy...

We will keep our eyes on you
We will keep our eyes on you

We will keep our eyes on you
We will keep our eyes on you
So we can set our hearts on you
Lord we will set our hearts on you!

Two other notes from Sunday… A couple of families brought beautiful baby daughters to be dedicated on Sunday. Mike presided over that with Ben and Janet DeBoer and their daughter, Ava (a little sister for Ben Jr) and with Matt and Louisa Wanless and their daughter Lucy (and little sister for Jayde). Pray for these families as they seek to raise their children for Christ.

And Terry Codling, the chair of our elders, brought the elders’ insert to our attention. You can download a copy from our Resources page.  He explained that the elders are sharing five of their key requests with the church family and that we want to hear from the church. Please be sure to send in your response. The elders will respond to each one.

I hope you have a joy-filled week! And if you’re into it, “Joyful Valentine’s Day”.

Sunday morning saw plowed roads and bright sunshine as we gathered for worship.

Leading us in worship was Jordan Donald from Harvest Bible Chapel, Chicago.  The full list of worship songs is available online but be sure to check out this new song that Jordan introduced to us.

Your Love Never Fails

The wind is strong and the water’s deep
But I’m not alone here in the open seas
‘Cause your love never fails
The chasm was far too wide
I never thought I’d reach the other side
Your love never fails
You stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
There may be pain in the night
But joy comes in the morning
And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that you love
Your love never fails

Pastor Todd took us into Ezra chapter three, “Finding God in relationship not religion.”  You can find both the audio of the message and the sermon notes in one place on our website.

One thing Todd reminded us of was that God builds nations and churches on families.  We need God-centred families that make worship a priority.  It is exciting to me that our men’s groups are going to be going after that very thing in their new study.  We are looking at the book, “Four Pillars of a Man’s Heart” by Stu Weber (available from our bookstore).  He says, “What kind of man builds a civilization, a small civilization, that outlasts him?  A four pillared man: …  A man who will bear the weight, stand against the elements, and hold one small civilization intact in a world that would like nothing better than to tear it down.”  God is calling us to some things greater than ourselves.  It will be great to discover them together!

We definitely need God’s strength, power and direction to accomplish what he is calling us to so let's gather Sunday night to seek him.  We will be praying together at Timothy at 6:30. Join us in crying out to God for our church.
