Truly Epic...Jesus Christ and the power of an indestructible life

Run Hard - Faith endures

Todd Dugard

Hebrews 12:1-3

When you have a faith that endures,

…you model your life on those who went before you (v1a)

...resolving to “run the race” as they did (v1b-2)

…getting rid of all excess weight

…purging sin from your life

…and setting your sights on the prize

…filling your thoughts with Jesus (v3a)

…because we all “grow weary and fainthearted” at times. (v3b)

SG Curriculum

1.     Who are the witnesses you have in your heritage to follow?

2.     In what ways are the “races set before us” as individuals alike or unique?

3.     In what way can good things (weight) hinder living for Christ?  (vs. 1)

4.     In what ways can sin continue to entangle us? (vs. 1)  What can we do about it?

5.     Read Philippians 2:1-11.  In what specific ways can we carefully consider Jesus’ example in comparison to our own lives?

6.     What are some things that cause weariness or discouragement?  Read 2 Corinthians 4:16-18.  What do we need to keep our eyes on and how do we do that?

Breakout:

1.     What specific weight or sin is holding me back that I need freedom from?

2.     How can we encourage each other in Jesus this week?

 Transforming Prayer:

Pray the following Scriptures.

1.     Hebrews 12:1-3

2.     Philippians 2:1-11

Truly Epic...Jesus Christ and the power of an indestructible life

Run Hard - Faith believes

Todd Dugard

Hebrews 11:32-40

Do you have a faith that believes?

Believe this: You are "made strong out of weakness" (v. 32-34)

Believe this: You will "rise again to a better life" (v. 35)

Believe this: You are one "of whom the world was not worthy" (v. 36-38)

Believe this: You have "something better" waiting for you (v. 39-40)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     What are most people referring to when they say, “You have to have faith”?

2.     How does the worldly philosophy of “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” apply where you live and work?

3.     How do we live out that God’s value system elevates weakness?  (vs. 34) Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

4.     Share how you believe the people listed in verse 32, expressed faith.

5.     Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 14, 19.  What does this passage tell us? (vs. 35)

6.     What am I known for – earthly or spiritual things?   How can we know each other on the basis of our faith? (vs. 39)

7.     Share some evidences of faith we see in each other.

Breakout:

1.     Have I been using my weakness as a pass for sin instead of confidence in God’s Power and Purpose?  (vs. 34)  In what area do I need to step up?

2.     How do I see my life fitting into God’s Purposes?

3.     Who can I share the gospel with this week?

Transforming Prayer:

Pray the following Scriptures.

1.     Hebrews 11:39-40

2.     2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Truly Epic...Jesus Christ and the power of an indestructible life

Run Hard - Faith chooses

Todd Dugard

Hebrews 11:22-31

Choose faith.

Choose faith over the fear of...

...what others will say (v. 23)
...material loss (v. 24-26)
...physical harm (v. 27-28)
...impossible situations (v. 29-30)

Choose faith because it alone delivers hope (v. 31a)

Choose faith by doing exactly what God says (v. 31b)

SG Curriculum

1.     Name two choices you have made (good or bad), that defined your life’s direction and share why you chose that way.
2.     When was the defining moment for you when you chose saving faith? (Romans 10:13)
3.     In what particular area of life is my faith being challenged right now?
4.     What is the greatest challenge to choosing faith I am facing in that area?
What others will say?
Material loss?
Physical harm?
An “impossible” situation?
5.     Are my eyes on the reward; or is my vision obscured by fleeting pleasures?
Which specific ones do I need to deal with?
6.     Where am I looking for hope?  (Read Hebrews 6:17-20)

Breakout:

1.     What challenge to my faith do I need to ask prayer for?

2.     How can I help another to take hope this week?

Transforming Prayer:

Pray the following Scriptures.

1.     Hebrews 6:17-20

2.     Hebrews 11:24-26

2.     What are the practical ramifications of a commitment to be a blessing – in my own family, in my church family, in my community?
3.     Are you seeking to be used of God no matter the past? (Have you received the blessing from God?)
4.     Share one particular action or event that affirmed to you one of the elements of the blessing.
*Personal Commitment – “I am here for you”

3.     What are my objections to obeying? (vs. 11) (Note the 5 excuses we were given:  Not right now/God’s asking too much/Did God really say that?/God will forgive if I don’t obey/That will be too embarrassing)                                                                Am I using excuses now?

Truly Epic...Jesus Christ and the power of an indestructible life

Run Hard - Faith is...

Todd Dugard

Hebrews 11:1-3

You can't run hard if you don't have faith in Jesus Christ.

Your faith gives you complete confidence in what God says (v. 1a)

...and compels you to act no matter the circumstances (v. 1b)

Your faith has you looking to God to gain his approval (v.2)

...knowing that everything good in your life comes from him (v. 3)

SG Curriculum

1.     How has life been harder than you expected?

2.     Read John 20:24-29. Have I acted on my belief in the unseen by trusting Jesus?

3.     Pastor Todd started by saying, “You can’t run hard if you don’t have faith in Jesus Christ.” -  How important is salvation to living by faith?

4.     Share your story of walking by faith in a hard time. (vs. 1 “assurance, conviction”)

5.     Read vs. 2.  What am I known for? Whose approval am I craving? (Take some time to share positive traits of faith that you see in each other.)

6.     Is my foundation for living rooted in rationalism or living by faith?

7.     (Bonus question!)  Without discussing the mechanics of how or when, how important to saving faith is a belief in creation – ex nihilo?

 Breakout:

1.     In what specific area do I need to stop walking by sight and start walking by faith?

2.     In what specific thing do I need to seek God’s approval, and stop seeking man’s approval?

3.     How can we encourage each other this week to walk by faith?

Transforming Prayer:

Pray the following Scriptures.

1.     Hebrews 6:19

2.     John 20:26-29

Run Hard - A Fearful Thing

Todd Dugard

Hebrews 10:26-39

As a Christ-follower fear the right things.

Fear the imminent judgment of God (v. 26-27)

Fear the outrage of God (v. 28-31)

Don't fear the loss of temporal things (v. 32-34)

Don't fear the loss of your soul (v. 35-39)

SG Curriculum

1.     Are there any fears ruling my life and holding me back from fully surrendering?

2.     What is my attitude toward “my appointment”?

3.     In what ways do believers treat Christ’s sacrifice as not enough?  (vs. 26)

4.     Share ways we can “trample Christ”, treat His sacrifice as “common”, or provoke God’s “outrage”? (vs. 29)

5.     Read 1 Peter 1:3-9.  What does this passage tell us?

6.     What are some trade-offs in following Jesus: negative and positive?

7.     What do we actually need to be hanging onto? (vs. 37)

 Breakout:

This would be a great opportunity to openly confess habitual sin in our life.  Even if we have confessed our sin to God, do we have some sort of plan in place or accountability to help us put off the willful habitual sin?

1.     In what area am I prone to wander?  Am I outraged by my sin?

2.     How can we encourage each other to be confident and endure? (vs. 35)

Transforming Prayer:

Pray the following Scriptures.

1.     James 4:13-17

2.     Hebrews 3:12-14

                  …a sincere heart

                  …a clean conscience

                  …and evidence of purity

                  …walk with Christ together

      …work for Christ together

SG Curriculum

1.     What is something you have unwavering confidence in?

2.     What does it mean to “enter the holy places?” (vs. 19)

3.     How can I attain sincerity of heart, a clean conscience, or evidence of a pure life?  (vs. 22)  Read Hebrews 9:13-14.

Hebrews 10:1-18

What are you still trying to do yourself to draw near to God?

Your goal: to be made perfect (v. 1)

Your problem: even God-ordained religious ritual can't make it happen (v. 2-4)

Your one hope: the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all (v. 5-13)

Hold Fast - Jesus: The Promised Eternal Inheritance

Todd Dugard

Hebrews 9:15-28

What are you eagerly waiting for in life?

Do you anticipate being in the will? (v15-17)

Have you thought about what needs to happen to receive your inheritance? (v18-22)

Are you enjoying what God has given to you? (v23-28)

                                    Jesus speaking for you (v24)

                                    Jesus freeing you (v25-26a)

                                    Jesus forgiving you (v26b-28a)

                                    Jesus coming for you (v28b)

Small Group Questions

     1.    What are some things you’re eagerly waiting for in this life (spring, vacation, marriage, kids, inheritance, retirement, etc)?  Why do we get so excited about these things?

2.   Read Hebrews 9:15-17.  What does it say about the inheritance we’re getting from Christ?  Are you certain that you’re in the will?  How can you be 100% sure?  Does the “promised, eternal inheritance” that’s coming to you excite you?  Why or why not?  If not, how can you grow in your excitement/passion for your inheritance in Christ?

3.   Read Hebrews 9:18-22.  What does it mean that blood had to be shed?  As you think about what was necessary for atonement in the Old Testament sacrificial system, how does that effect your appreciation for what Christ did for you?

4.   Read Hebrews 9:23-28.  Our inheritance will be fully revealed and enjoyed in heaven.  Todd mentioned, though, that there are aspects of our inheritance that we get to enjoy now: Jesus speaks for me (v.24), Jesus frees me (v.25-26a), Jesus forgives me (v.26b-28a), and Jesus is coming for me (v.28b).  Are there any of these that you’re not enjoying right now?  What does that say about how Satan might be messing with you?  How can you get to the place where you are fully enjoying the inheritance in Christ that you do have this side of eternity?

Transforming Prayer:

Pray the following Scriptures.

1.     Hebrews 9:15

2.     Hebrews 9:28

Hebrews 9:1-14

Who paid the price to make it possible for you to worship God?

The price is high! (v. 1-9a)

And with all of your effort, it is never enough (v. 9b-10)

But Christ paid the full price with his own blood (v. 11-14)

     ...to purify and perfect you

     ...to serve the living God

SG Curriculum:  Hebrews 9:1-14

1.     Have you ever considered whether you can even worship without a “ticket”?

2.     What are some elaborate rituals people might use to get to God today and what are they worth? (Isaiah 64:6b)

3.     What should we do with unintentional sins?  (vs. 7)  What should we do with intentional sins?  (Read 1 John 3:6, 1:9)

4.     What are some differences between the “old arrangement” (covenant) and the “time of reformation,” (“an eternal redemption”)?  (vs. 9,10,12)

5.     Read Isaiah 53:6.  What does this passage tell us?

6.     What is the goal of the new covenant? What is the key to getting a ticket? (vs. 14)

Breakout

1.     What unintentional or intentional sins do I need help dealing with?  (Is it a willful, rebellious, intentional, hard-hearted pattern?) (vs. 7)

2.     In what areas can I increase my worship/service?

Transforming Prayer:

Pray the following Scriptures.

1.     Hebrews 9:11-14

Angels are cool…

…they act how God wired them up to act: having the ability to choose and live for him or not (v9)

…they do what God made them to do: worshipers of God sent out to serve his people (v6, 13-14)

Only Jesus is truly epic,

…not created but Creator

…not choosing to be holy but is holiness itself

…not worshiping but being worshiped

Let nothing get in the way of your worship of Jesus Christ

…you are created to be in relationship with the Creator

…you are called to be holy as he is holy

Tears and Joy
Psalm 126
Todd Dugard

By default, my life is marked by tears; because God is faithful, it can be marked by joy.

  • That I need to be restored betrays the fact that I'm not where I should be in the first place (v. 1a)
  • That God offers restoration is the inconceivable reality of his faithfulness toward me (v. 1b)

Esther
Todd Dugard

Study note:  A little unusual for us, but the following outline in Esther has been the basis for the messages for the last two weeks and this Sunday as well.  Esther is one historical narrative with one plot and one main message.  We'll work through a portion of the outline each Sunday and complete it, Lord willing, this Sunday.  The actions of the main characters will form the basis for hearing what God has for us in this great account of his work on behalf of his people.

Am I facing any of these failures?

The foolishness of over-indulgence - King Ahasuerus (1:1)

The pursuit of comfort and what's-best-for-me - Mordecai (2:5)

The crisis of love and identity - Esther (2:7)

The bitterness and rage that flow from unforgiveness - Haman the Agagite (3:1)

The consequences of past choices - The Jews (3:13)

Or do I realize that GOD is forever faithful in the face of these failures!

Love Perseveres
Nehemiah 13
Todd Dugard

When I persevere in my love for God and for his people...

It means remaining true to what God says (v. 1a)

It means recognizing the challenge of being God's people (v. 1b-31a)

It means resting confidently in how God will work things out (v. 31b)

Small Group Curriculum

1. Read v. 1a.  Todd mentioned about how much every facet of our lives is better when we read from the book.  What are some practical ways you can implement God's Word into your life/your family's life?

2. It's important that we remain vigilant when it comes to not letting "the world" creep into the church/our lives.  Nehemiah was vigilant in issues that came up (v. 4-31a).  In what ways have you seen a lack of vigilance affect you?  How can we as a group help each other be vigilant?

3. Nehemiah 13:31b is a great verse.  Share some ways that God has remembered you for good? How has your heart changed as a result of God's working things out? What are some ways that this group/our church does a good job of living out Galatians 6:9?

Todd Dugard

I have made “a firm covenant” with Christ and his church, and I am seeking to live that out in every way possible.

I’ve declared my intentions publicly (9:38-10:27)

I’ve understood my obligations completely (10:28-39)

                  Under the Word (10:28-29)

                  Distinct from the world (10:30-31)

                  Giving my best (10:32-39)

I’ve sacrificed my will unreservedly (11:1-12:26)

Confessions:

Father, please forgive us as members of your church
at Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie…

1    For spiritual pride in thinking more of ourselves than we ought to have rather than humbling ourselves before the Lord
1 Corinthians 4:7; 2 Corinthians 4:7; Galatians 6:3; 1 Peter 5:6

2    For times when we thought that the preaching of God’s Word was for someone else or we failed to consider “the whole counsel of God” and instead preferred the opinions and perspectives of ourselves or others;
Acts 2:37; Acts 20:27; Ephesians 4:14; Hebrews 4:12-13

3    For times when we have hindered our own worship of Christ and that of others with our attitudes, actions and words
Philippians 2:3

4    For our lack of prayer
Ephesians 6:18

5    For distractions and personal agendas that have kept us from our mission to glorify God in the making of disciples
Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 6:62; Acts 1:8

6    For times when we, as leaders past and present, have neglected to properly feed and care for the sheep
John 21:15-17

7    For our failure, as members past and present, to submit to the leaders you have placed over all of us, and for our neglect of our members’ covenant and not letting our ‘yes’ be ‘yes’
Hebrews 13:17; Matthew 5:33-37

8    For robbing you of our tithes and offerings and failing to be generous
Proverbs 11:24-25; Malachi 3:8-10; Matthew 6:19-24; 2 Corinthians 8:1-15; 9:6-11

9    For failing to decisively deal with sin in our midst
Ephesians 4:15; Galatians 6:1-5; James 5:19-20; Revelation 2-3

10    For all corrupt talk, gossip, slanderous and deceitful words that have been spoken
Ephesians 4:25; James 3:5-12

11    For times when we have questioned the integrity of others and failed to love by not thinking the best of them
1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Galatians 5:15, 26

12    For times when we have wrongly judged the motives of others
Matthew 7:1, 25

13    For actions that have hurt the weaker brother—guests, children, youth, new believers, and the unbelieving searcher—by not demonstrating the love of Christ to them
Romans 14

14    For holding on to hurts rather than freely forgiving and extending grace as you have done to us through Christ
Ephesians 4:32

15    For allowing divisions to take root in this church despite your Son’s prayer that we “would be one”
1 Corinthians 1:10-17; 3:1-9; John 17:20-21; Ephesians 4:1-16; Proverbs 6:16-19

16    For failing to give God the glory in all things

When to respond carefully with truth
When to pray specifically
When to act courageously
3.     How have I overcome these excuses Pastor Todd listed?
I don’t have much to offer.  Read 1 Corinthians 12:7
I have been burned.  Read Galatians 6:9
I don’t have time.   Read 1 Peter 4:10-11
I won’t be very good at it.  Read 1 Corinthians 1:27-31
I might be really good at it.
4.     Share a time you saw God accomplish an impossible mission through ordinary believers.  Nehemiah 6:15

5.     Read Nehemiah 4:6.  Where have I or where can I find a place to “have a mind to work”?

6.     What is the key quality God is looking for in serving?  Read Nehemiah 7:2

Love Overcomes All Things: When internal challenges threaten your progress
Nehemiah 5
Todd Dugard

I must overcome internal opposition to what God has put on my heart to do

One reality: I realize that internal challenges are going to happen (v. 1-5)
One motivation: I pursue the righteousness of God at all times (v. 6)
One approach: I take time to carefully consider the Lord's way (v. 7a)
One response: Leaders lead; I will follow (v. 7b-19)

Small Group Curriculum
1.     Has God ever laid something on your heart?  Describe that experience.
2.     Review some of the challenges the Corinthian church faced.  What attitude should we have when the local church faces internal challenges?
3.     Read James 3:13-18.  What is the key to peace and righteousness in the church?
4.     Read Nehemiah 5:6.  What are elements of “pondering carefully” or “taking counsel” or “giving serious thought to”?
5.     Review the steps of a good action plan.  At what steps have past attempts you have been part of to address problems broken down?
a)  Specific detailed examination
b)  Deliberate engagement of all parties
c)  Appeals to righteous motives
d)  A call to aggressive and even radical action
e)  Accountability
f)  Sealing the commitment
6.     What are the two basic roles we must find and fulfill when facing issues?             Hebrews 13:17-18

Breakout:
1. Are there any rights I am being called on to give up in order to reach a godly solution right now?
2. What specific honourable principles can we appeal to in order to encourage someone to pursue righteousness and peace?

Love Overcomes All Things: When external challenges threaten your progress
Nehemiah 4
Todd Dugard

I overcome opposition to what God has put on my heart to do when...

I understand my enemy
  • Driven by emotion (v. 1, 7b)
  • Abandoning reason (V. 2-3)
  • Fueled by self-interest (v. 7a)
  • Resorting to a mob-mentality (v. 8)

I keep at it anyway
  • Admitting the emotion (v. 4a, 10-13)
  • Rehearsing the truth (v. 4b-5, 14)
  • Focusing on the Lord (v. 9, 15)
  • Rallying with God's people (v. 6, 16-23)

Small Group Curriculum
1.     Though embarrassing, share a time when you “just lost it” emotionally.
2.     Review the indicators of opposition.  Have you ever seen these in yourself?
3.     Read Nehemiah 4:2-3.  Talk about how “words of opposition” affect our ability to “keep at it anyway”.
4.     Read James 3:13-18.  Spend some time considering what is behind the opposition and contrast what a godly response would be.
5.     What are some of the selfish motives that drive people...and sometimes ourselves?
6.     Read Nehemiah 4:9.  How can I build “rehearsing truth” into my life to overcome emotional reactions?
  • Trouble and persecution are guaranteed for the followers of Christ - Matthew 5:11; John 16:33; John 15:20
  • The gospel message is foolishness and a threat to those in whom the spirit is not working – 1 Corinthians 1:18; 1 Peter 2:8
  • The hatred and opposition is directed at the Lord and his Word first - John 15:18
  • God will execute justice. Our task is to love our enemies - Matthew 5:43; Romans 12:19
  • Christ has overcome the world and will give us grace when we need it - John 16:33;  Matt 10:19
  • God loves us and is for us – Romans 8:31, 35
  • Something amazing awaits us on the other side of eternity – Romans 8:18

7.     Read Nehemiah 4:14.  How can I rally my co-workers?
8.     What are some things that we need to renew our efforts in building together?

Breakout:
1. Who am I inviting?  Who is my “hardest person”?
2. Pray for each other to have boldness and for the specific names of people being invited.

Love Believes and Takes Risks
Nehemiah
Todd Dugard

Following Christ means believing God and taking risks.

Am I properly motivated?
"Why should not my face be sad...?" (2:1-3)

Am I personally resolved to act?
"Send me" (2:4-8)

Am I focused on the right mission?
"What my God put into my heart to do" (2:9-16)

Am I getting to it?
"Come, let us build" (2:17-20; 3:1-32)

Small Group Curriculum
1.     People sometimes do things that have great risk.  What is the riskiest thing you have ever done?
2.     What are some ways a sense of grief over how broken down our world is could be expressed in our lives?  (vs. 3)
Read Romans 9:1-3, 2 Corinthians 5:16-21.  What moves me?
3.     Share if you have felt you ever risked something in these areas:
  • Identifying with Christ
  • Standing for doing right, against wrong
  • Facing possible loss
  • Choosing to forgive
  • Choosing to speak up for Christ
4.     Read 1 Corinthians 3:12-15.  Are there any areas I am “taking my chances with God later”?  How would God characterize my priorities: gold, silver, precious gems or wood, hay and stubble?
5.     Share if there is a specific thing or task you believe God has called you to in order to make disciples, or build his people?  What is my mission?
6.     What are some possible areas we could “step up” to begin to build?

Breakout:
1. Have you ever taken a risk for your faith or for Christ?   What was it?
2. What specific step do I need to take next to follow Christ?
3. What are the possible risks and are they holding me back?  Read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Love Sees the Failure and Takes Responsibility
Nehemiah
Todd Dugard

When love is unleashed in the community of believers, how does that play out for me?

I care about the "trouble and shame" people are facing (v. 1-4)

I affirm the truth about God's "steadfast love" and the implications of that love for me (v. 5-10)

And, I see my responsibility and appeal to God to work through me (v. 11)

"Make confession to the Lord": Separating ourselves from the sin that separates us from God
Ezra 10
Todd Dugard

This is my testimony of overcoming the hindrances to worship in my life...

Sensing God's Spirit at work in me... (v. 1)

...I see the hope I have in the LORD (v. 2)

...and turn from my sin (v. 3-43)
  • get specific (v. 3-8)
  • call it out for what it is (v. 9-10)
  • embrace the remedy (v. 11)
  • follow a plan (v. 12-14)
  • expect critics (v. 15)
  • see it through (v. 16-43)
...fully realizing how hard this is going to be (v. 44)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     How is worship rising in my life?
2.     What specific thing am I in danger of going back to?
3.     Will I name it as sin or make excuses?  (vs. 9-11)
4.     Make a plan:
  • Radical Amputation – What will I name?
  • Radical Accountability – Who will I tell?
  • Radical Affection – How will I increase worship?
5.     Read verse 16.  Have I signed on the line?

Breakout:

1. What specific action do I need to commit to before others?
2. How can we encourage each other this week?

Not Going Back - Worship Rises

"Our guilt has mounted up to the heavens": Confronting the hindrances to worship
Ezra 9-10
Todd Dugard

I confront the hindrances to worship when...

I see the real problem (v. 1-2)
I am appalled by it (v. 3-4)
I throw myself before God in desperate prayer (v. 5-15)
  • grieving (v. 6)
  • revealing (v. 7)
  • remembering (v. 8-9
  • agreeing (v. 10-12)
  • accepting (v. 13-15)

Small Group Curriculum

Any hindrance to worship has to come from our side.  Where do hindrances originate?
Consider the following areas:
1.     Matt 6:21 In what areas can a lack of generosity hinder my worship?
2.     Matt 15:18  What kind of words hinder my worship?  Does this include thoughts that I don’t express?
3.     Matt 15:19  What actions are there that I tend to overlook in spite of how they might hinder worship?  What does repetitive disobedience really say about my heart?
4.     Matt 18:35  How does unforgiveness, malice, anger, or wishing someone harm become embedded in my life and therefore included in my worship?
5.     1 John 3:17  Can there be true worship if justice and mercy are being withheld?  Read James 1:27
6.     Romans 10:1  If mission is actually an expression of worship, what does my level of involvement indicate about my heart?

Breakout:

1. What specific area do I need to confront?  Spend some time praying for each other.  Consider the pattern of Ezra’s prayer:  Grieving, Revealing (honesty), Remembering, Agreeing, Accepting.
2. Commit to pray over the next seven days about how we’ll respond to the call to eliminate the hindrances to worship.

"The hand of the Lord his God was on him": Following godly leadership
Ezra 7-8
Todd Dugard

As a godly leader, do I have God's hand on me?
(as a godly follower, I'll follow this kind of leader)

I'll study, live out, and teach God's Word (7:1-10)
I'll see evidence of God's work around me (7:11-26)
I'll acknowledge that God gets the credit for that work (7:27-28)
And, I'll love those who are following me by leading them to... (8:1-14)
...serve the LORD (8:15-20; 24-30)
...trust the LORD (8:21-23)
...worship the LORD (8:31-36)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     Am I stirred when our focus is put on Jesus and all he has done for us in salvation?  Briefly share your testimony of salvation.
2.     “I will never see God’s hand on my life if I don’t have God’s Word in my life.”   How can I make God’s Word pre-eminent in my life?  (Ezra 7:10)
3.     What evidence of God’s work are you seeing in your life? (Ezra 7:11-26) Is there something that only God could have done?
4.     When do we tend to take credit for things instead of giving God the glory? (Ezra 7:27-28)  How does this balance with our responsibility to act?
5.     Share a time you have gone out on a limb for God.  (Ezra 8:21-23)
6.     Read Ezra 8:22 and Romans 8:28.  What is the encouragement for this side of trials? Have I been seeking God’s face or his hand?

Breakout:
1. Am I actively following, by pursuing Worshipping Christ, Walking with Christ and Working for Christ?
2. Take some time to pray for anyone facing a trial.

"The Lord Had Made Them Joyful": Realizing the blessing of simple obedience
Ezra 6:13-22
Pastor Todd Dugard

God's desire is to give us joy as a guaranteed blessing for obedience.

Joy realized: "I've got it!" (6:13-15)
Joy expressed: "I'm showing it!" (6:16-18)
Joy retained: "I'm keeping it! (6:19-22)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     In what ways do we struggle with believing the following?
  • God desires to give us joy!
  • God is greater than any opposition or circumstance!
  • God is willing to help us relearn faithfulness!
2.     Joy only comes through a relationship with Jesus.  Briefly share how this foundational relationship was established in your life.
3.     Do we have joy shining through our life?  (vs. 16)  What area of life tends to drive us to substitute emotions or controlling our circumstances for joy?
4.     Review the four ways joy can be expressed in our lives.  Discuss how they might still be expressed during difficult times?
5.     Read Ezra 6:22.  What do we need to pursue to get it, show it and keep it?

Breakout:
1. Are there any areas of partial obedience or rebellions large and small stealing our joy?
2. How can we help each other overcome them?

Not Going Back - Worship Rises

"Let it be done with all diligence": Attributing worth to God in all my work
Ezra 5-6:12
Todd Dugard

Working with  all diligence for God requires that...

...when I hear the Word (5:1-2)

...I get right to work (5:3-4)

...seeing his favour on what I'm doing (5:5)

...and remaining humble about what's being accomplished (5:6-612)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     Todd mentioned that our whole lives are worship.  Hopefully it’s to Jesus… but on this side of eternity we all have idols we’re tangling with.  Identify some of yours – and how you can tear them down this week.
2.     Read Ezra 5:1-2.  We see here that the people accepted the message from God that was taught to them.  The reality is that whenever we crack open our Bibles we are staring directly into the face of God. Is that the sense you get as you read?  Why or why not? What are your motives for reading the Bible?  We heard Sunday that we should read the Bible so as to ‘consider our ways.’  What things do you need to consider this week as you’ve heard the Word preached and get into it on your own?
3.     Read Ezra 5:3-5.  The people get right to work rebuilding the temple.  We’ve probably all heard that God wants us in the game – serving and living for him – not just coasting through a life of mediocricy. What is that ‘something’ that you need to get to work on in your life so you can be an effective worshipper?
4.     Read Ezra 5:5.  Pastor Todd mentioned that ‘the eye of God’ on us could be a comforting thing or uncomfortable thing.  As you assess your own life, does God’s eye on you a welcome thing or something you want to run from (Adam and Eve in the garden)?  How can you get to the place where you want nothing less than God’s watchful eye on your life?  How can your small group help make this happen effectively in each others lives?
5.     Read Ezra 5:6-6:12.  The humility in the Jew’s response is pretty inspiring.  What does their humility say about what their identity is wrapped up in?  It’s also interesting to note that humility doesn’t mean a lack of confidence.  What does confidence wrapped in a deep humility look like for you?  For us as a small group?  For us as a church?  How does Ephesians 3:20 encourage you as you seek to live your life with all diligence?

Breakout:
1. The three obstacles in the face of obedience to the Word mentioned Sunday were ignorance, discouragement and rebellion. How do we counteract those in our lives?

"Frustrate their purpose": Expecting opposition to faith and worship
Ezra 4
Todd Dugard

If I'm doing exactly what God told me to do, how is it that things can still go so wrong?

God doesn't keep me from being opposed (v. 1-3)
...his purpose is to set me apart from the world

God doesn't keep me from facing discouragement and fear (v. 4-5)
...his purpose is to have me know his power

God doesn't keep me from injustice (v. 6-23)
...his purpose is to have me man-up and trust him

God doesn't keep me from apparent failure (v. 24)
...his purpose is for me to know that his ways are far greater

Small Group Curriculum

1.     Share a time when things went wrong and God seemed absent.
2.     Life’s difficulties happen to everyone: How should our responses differ as believers?
3.     How can we identify with the person of Jesus when experiencing opposition to righteous living? (Read Matthew 10:16-33)
4.     How does our culture disguise their opposition to our “Mission” and “Message”? (Ezra 4:2)
5.     Read 2 Timothy 3:12-14. What breaks your resolve to live for Christ?
6.     Read 2 Corinthians 4:7-10.  What specific tasks would an increase in God’s power encourage you to step up for?
7.     Todd quoted Paul Tripp – “Waiting is not a sign of God’s … inattention, but a loving tool of his delivering and transforming grace.”  In what area are you leaning on God’s “until”?

Breakout:

1. What is a specific area of discouragement or failure you need to bring before God?
2. Encourage each other with Philippians 1:6.

"Build Him a House": Establishing the Priority of Worship
Ezra 1-2
Pastor Todd Dugard

Lifting high the name of Jesus Christ in worship is first priority in my life.

- Worship orders all my other priorities (1:1-4)

- Worship requires my time and talents (1:5-2:67)

- Worship compels my generosity (2:68-70)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     “God first, God only, God always!”  Is this how I would describe my life?
2.     Todd suggested that seeing priorities as a list is not the best way to understand them.  How are they better described?
3.     Read 1 Corinthians 3:16. How can we make corporate worship (worshipping as the body), a priority? (Ezra 1:5)
4.     How can I best prepare for worshipping as the body?
5.     Share how “all the time, everywhere” worship carries on throughout my week.  (John 4:23)
6.     Read Ezra 2 in its entirety.  (Just kidding!)  What do you identify with in the reasons Todd gave for why God included this list?
7.     How is being “born and raised in Babylon” a danger to worship?

Breakout:
1. Read Proverbs 11:24 and 2 Corinthians 9:6-7. Which characterizes me?   Does my giving reflect it?
2. How will I make worship a priority this week?

"The People were Unfaithful": Understanding the Justice of God
2 Chronicles 36;11-23
Todd Dugard

To understand God's judgment on our unfaithfulness we must understand that...

We are more stubborn than we realize (v. 11-13)

We are more sinful than we realize
- We mess up worship (v. 14)
- We too often ignore the Word (v. 15-16a)
- We take God's good gifts for granted (v. 21)

We are more vulnerable than we realize (v. 16b)

BUT...we are also more loved than we realize
- God disciplines those whom he loves (v. 17-20)
- God restores those whom he disciplines (v. 22-23)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     “Each of us has certain behaviours, character issues and attitudes that we would do well to leave behind!”  Begin by spending some group time in prayer asking God to reveal what he might be trying to get our attention about right now.
2.     Read 1 Corinthians 10:6.  What are some ways we can overcome our inability to see blind spots in our lives?
3.     Read 1 John 2:15-17.  What are some things we hang on to that actually pollute our worship?  (vs. 14)
4.     God’s persistent compassion is most often shown through the proclaiming of his Word.  How does complacency or flippancy about God’s Word show?  How does taking it seriously show?  (vs. 15-16a)
5.     Read Proverbs 3:11-12.  Share some ways you have experienced God’s love through his discipline.
6.     What are some results of repentance and God’s restoring work in our lives?

Breakout:

This series was originally broadcast in 2005 - but is still very relevant today.

When Cultures Clash

It is an inescapable reality today. We live in what is increasingly a society that is hostile to the ethical framework of the Bible - the culture of God’s Kingdom. The 21st century is dawning as the post-Christian era in Western civilization and Christ-followers who are serious about their faith are compelled, as Abraham and Sarah were, to acknowledge that “they [are] strangers and exiles on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13b). “How now shall we live?” asked Chuck Colson; in other words, what is to be our response when confronted by the clash of cultures that we will inevitably face?

This series takes us into the five most difficult moral flashpoints of our day where we learn the biblical ethic as well as a godly response to the culture in which we live.
