The People We Proved to Be
I know God's will for me
1 Thessalonians 5:12-28
God's will for me is to be…
…living in community with God’s people (v. 12-15)
…engaged in passionate worship (v. 16)
…unceasing in prayer (v. 17-18)
…led by the Holy Spirit (v. 19)
…devoted to knowing God’s Word (v. 20-21)
…walking in holiness (v. 22)
…exercising complete confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ (v. 23-28)
Small Group Curriculum
1. Share something concerning which you wish you knew for certain what God’s will is? What level of anxiety is it causing you?
2. What aspects of living in community with God’s people are most challenging to you? (vs. 12-15)
3. What is preventing me from rejoicing always? Do we have to discount pain and loss in order to rejoice? (vs. 16)
4. Does gratefulness permeate my prayers? Share a couple of things you are grateful for. (vs. 17-18)
5. Read 1 Corinthians 2:6-16. What kills my zeal? What kindles my zeal? (vs. 19)
6. What are some promises I have put my weight on? (vs. 20-21)
Breakout:
1. How am I specifically growing in holiness? (vs. 22)
2. What specific action do I need to take this week to increase in holiness?

The People We Proved To Be
I Am Ready for the Lord's Return
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Four questions to determine if I am really ready for Christ's return:
Q1: Am I in the know? (vs. 1)
Q2: Am I eager or in denial? (vs. 2-4)
Q3: Am I changed? (vs. 5-8)
Q4: Am I working? (vs. 9-11)
Small Group Curriculum
1. The Big Day: What is the next big thing you are looking forward to (in earthly terms!)?
2. List three or four basic things we should know and apply as believers.
3. The Big Day: Read 2 Peter 3:11-12. How does being “eager for the Lord’s return” show in our daily lives? (vs. 2-6)
4. Contrast actions that are oriented toward “The Day of the Lord” with those oriented to “Peace and Security.”
5. Share some specific areas we need to be “aware and awake” about concerning our culture. (vs. 4-7)
6. The Big Day: Do I have a sense of urgency? How does this connect to the mundane tasks of life? How does it change my priorities? (vs 9)
Breakout:
1. Spend some time praying for the members of the family your SG is helping with Christmas Hope. (vs 11)
2. Read verse 8. What are some specific ways I have grown in faith, hope or love in my walk?

The People We Proved to Be
I have hope in times of grief
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
As a Christ-follower, when dealing with death, I know that... (v. 13a)
Grief is certain (v. 13b)
Hope is ours (v. 13c-14)
CHRIST IS COMING! (v. 15-17)
And so, we must “comfort one another with these words” (v. 18)
Small Group Curriculum
1. Describe a time when you had no hope?
2. Read John 11:34-28 and Hebrews 4:14-16. Share how Christ has made the difference in your grief.
3. What are some practical ways to live so that when we die it has impact for Christ (vs. 13)?
4. How can my values reflect what it looks like to live in anticipation of the hereafter (vs. 15-17)?
5. Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. What does this passage tell us about how our grief can become productive rather than despairing?
6. What are some specific ways to encourage someone in a time of grief?
Breakout:
1. What specific thing do I need to change about how I am living for my death to have impact for Christ (vs. 4)?
2. Have you given practical thought to planning your own funeral? What do you want said?

The People We Proved To Be
I Love Others
1 Thess. 4:9-12
As a Christ-follower, my love for others is...
...inherent (v. 9)
...evident (v. 10a)
...growing (v. 10b)
...transforming (v. 11)
...impacting (v. 12)
Small Group Curriculum
1. Share an example of love being the innate response of someone who has just received Christ.
2. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12. What is the evidence in my life that Jesus has made a difference?
3. How do the things I express in word and social media exhibit love?
4. Read Romans 12:9-21. Share some practical examples of these ways to love.
5. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12. How do we balance the tension raised here between living by faith and living by obedience?
6. Read John 13:35. What are some things we substitute for the key evidence of discipleship?
7. Does this group have a story
that should be told
about loving each other?
Breakout:
1. What is one extravagant act of love I can undertake this week (vs. 10)?
2. What is my blank? "I love others so much that I want to see ________ in my life transformed!"

The People We Proved to Be - I Live To Encourage Others
1 Thessalonians 3:6-13
Encourage one another…
“Whazz’up?” (v.6)
“Atta boy!” (v.7-8)
“I’m praying for you.” (v.9-10a)
“How can I help?” (v. 10b)
“It’s all about him” (v.11-12)
Small Group Curriculum
1. Read James 3:8-10 and Ephesians 4:29. The words we use are often a key factor in how a church perceives itself. When has this affected you, to build you up or discourage you?
2. If you use social media, describe a time it was used to encourage you or by you to encourage another.
3. Read 1 Thessalonians 3:7-8. What are some ways to encourage someone, especially if they are being afflicted?
4. What are some ways you build face time with people into your schedule?
5. Share a time when an encouraging word made all the difference in your life.
6. What are some things about your small gorup that encourage you?
Breakout:
1. Make a commitment to pray immediately for or with someone when a need arises this week.
2. Take on the challenge to share the gospel with someone before your next small group meeting.
3. Pray for each other and ask for specific and practical ways the small group can help.
4. Who is someone you need to have Facebook time or face time with this week?

The People We Proved to Be - I Conquer Affliction By Faith
1 Thessalonians 2:17-3:5
I conquer affliction by faith...
Believing that Satan can't do anything God doesn't allow him to do (2:17-18)
Boasting of the great things God is doing through me (2:19-20)
Carrying on and acting courageously no matter what (3:1-5)
Small Group Curriculum
1. Have you experienced watching someone you love go through a trial? What makes it so difficult?
2. Is it easy to recognize when circumstances are spiritual warfare (2:18)? What prevents us from becoming overly concerned in this area?
3. Pastor Todd mentioned that Satan is limited by God's decree, the Word of God, prayer and God's sufficient grace. How can we participate in these?
4. Read 2 Thessalonians 2:8. How does this passage encourage us?
5. How does keeping our perspective tied to Christ's coming change our priorities or our view of people? (2:19-20)
6. What is the upside of knowing that ministry does not depend on us? What is the downside?
7. How can we bring the Word of God into someone's difficult situation (3:2)?
Breakout:
1. What afflictions do we need to pray for together?
2. Who is in difficulty that we can encourage with prayer and God's Word?
