Not Going Back - Love Unleashed

Love Commits
Nehemiah 10:1-12:26
Todd Dugard

I have made “a firm covenant” with Christ and his church, and I am seeking to live that out in every way possible.

I’ve declared my intentions publicly (9:38-10:27)

I’ve understood my obligations completely (10:28-39)

                  Under the Word (10:28-29)

                  Distinct from the world (10:30-31)

                  Giving my best (10:32-39)

I’ve sacrificed my will unreservedly (11:1-12:26)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     How does our view of covenants as Christ-followers differ from our culture’s views?
2.     Has there been a time you fulfilled your part of an agreement even when it was hard and others were telling you not to?
3.     Read Nehemiah 9:38.  In what ways have we declared our firm covenant with God?  What are the two crucial declarations concerning salvation?
4.     Share what Pastor Todd described as our obligations as followers of Christ, and some practical examples of how we live each of them out. (Nehemiah 10:28-39)
5.     Read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.  What does this passage tell us about surrendering our own will?

Breakout:
1. What is the next right step in fulfilling my firm covenant with Christ?
2. What is an area in which I need to step up in giving my best?

Love Confesses
Nehemiah 9
Todd Dugard

If I love God enough to confess my sin,
...my heart must really be in it (v. 1-2a)
...leaving nothing out (v. 2b)
...keeping my focus on him at all times (v. 3-5)
...and fully grasping (v. 6-38)
.....who I am - a needy sinner
.....and who he is - a faithful and loving Saviour

Confessions:

Father, please forgive us as members of your church
at Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie…

1    For spiritual pride in thinking more of ourselves than we ought to have rather than humbling ourselves before the Lord
1 Corinthians 4:7; 2 Corinthians 4:7; Galatians 6:3; 1 Peter 5:6

2    For times when we thought that the preaching of God’s Word was for someone else or we failed to consider “the whole counsel of God” and instead preferred the opinions and perspectives of ourselves or others;
Acts 2:37; Acts 20:27; Ephesians 4:14; Hebrews 4:12-13

3    For times when we have hindered our own worship of Christ and that of others with our attitudes, actions and words
Philippians 2:3

4    For our lack of prayer
Ephesians 6:18

5    For distractions and personal agendas that have kept us from our mission to glorify God in the making of disciples
Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 6:62; Acts 1:8

6    For times when we, as leaders past and present, have neglected to properly feed and care for the sheep
John 21:15-17

7    For our failure, as members past and present, to submit to the leaders you have placed over all of us, and for our neglect of our members’ covenant and not letting our ‘yes’ be ‘yes’
Hebrews 13:17; Matthew 5:33-37

8    For robbing you of our tithes and offerings and failing to be generous
Proverbs 11:24-25; Malachi 3:8-10; Matthew 6:19-24; 2 Corinthians 8:1-15; 9:6-11

9    For failing to decisively deal with sin in our midst
Ephesians 4:15; Galatians 6:1-5; James 5:19-20; Revelation 2-3

10    For all corrupt talk, gossip, slanderous and deceitful words that have been spoken
Ephesians 4:25; James 3:5-12

11    For times when we have questioned the integrity of others and failed to love by not thinking the best of them
1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Galatians 5:15, 26

12    For times when we have wrongly judged the motives of others
Matthew 7:1, 25

13    For actions that have hurt the weaker brother—guests, children, youth, new believers, and the unbelieving searcher—by not demonstrating the love of Christ to them
Romans 14

14    For holding on to hurts rather than freely forgiving and extending grace as you have done to us through Christ
Ephesians 4:32

15    For allowing divisions to take root in this church despite your Son’s prayer that we “would be one”
1 Corinthians 1:10-17; 3:1-9; John 17:20-21; Ephesians 4:1-16; Proverbs 6:16-19

16    For failing to give God the glory in all things
Isaiah 42:8; Ephesians 3:20-21

God's Work = My Mission

John 4:31-38
Daryl Molyneaux

I know God's work is becoming my mission when:

1. I pursue kingdom priorities over earthly desires (v.31-34)

2. I realize the urgency of sharing the Gospel (v.35-36a)

3. I joyfully do my part alongside others (v.36b-38)

Love Submits
Nehemiah 8
Todd Dugard

Seven indicators that I'm submissive to the Word of God...

I seek it out (v. 1)

I'm attentive to it (v. 2-3)

I'm in awe of it (v. 4-5)

I'm drawn to God because of it (v. 6)

I'm seeking to understand it (v. 7-8)

I'm cut to the heart by it (v. 9-12)

I'm being changed through it (v. 13-18)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     Read Nehemiah 8.
2.     How would you describe your relationship to the Word: It’s a good luck charm, a compass, a playbook, a love letter, your authority, something else?
3.     Has there ever been a time when you just couldn’t get enough of the Word? What did that look like?
4.     What are some ways to actively interact with the Word?  What tools have helped?
5.     Share how worship is an active part of your personal devotional life.
6.     Which is the most significant area in my life God needs to transform at this time?
Guilt replaced by hope.
Fear replaced by love.
Shame replaced by joy.
7.     What are some specific areas in your life God has already transformed through the Word?

Breakout:
1. What is a specific area the Word is “cutting to your heart” in?  (Acts 2:37)
2. What is the next action you need to take to truly submit to the Word of God?

Love Works
Nehemiah 6-7
Todd Dugard

Love works...

...in the face of unrelenting opposition from without and fear within (6:1-14, 17-19)

...despite overwhelming odds of ever getting the job done (6:15)

...seeing the amazing and the impossible accomplished (6:16)

...calling everyone to be engaged in faithful service (7:1-73)

Small Group Curriculum

1.     What actually gives definition to my love?  (ie - How is love displayed?  “5 Love Languages”).  Read Galatians 5:13

2.     How would focusing on the mission help define the following? Nehemiah 6:1-14
When to ignore opposition
When to respond carefully with truth
When to pray specifically
When to act courageously
3.     How have I overcome these excuses Pastor Todd listed?
I don’t have much to offer.  Read 1 Corinthians 12:7
I have been burned.  Read Galatians 6:9
I don’t have time.   Read 1 Peter 4:10-11
I won’t be very good at it.  Read 1 Corinthians 1:27-31
I might be really good at it.
4.     Share a time you saw God accomplish an impossible mission through ordinary believers.  Nehemiah 6:15

5.     Read Nehemiah 4:6.  Where have I or where can I find a place to “have a mind to work”?

6.     What is the key quality God is looking for in serving?  Read Nehemiah 7:2

Breakout:

1. Do I tend to make my choices based on fear or on the Word of God?

2. How will God evaluate my stewardship? Read Matthew 25:14-30
