That we should be saved

Bible Text: Luke 1:57-80 |

God made a promise. It is a good thing he did. We’d have no hope otherwise. Caught in the web of human depravity built into the very fabric of our beings, we have no recourse but the grace and mercy of God. Thankfully, God sent his Son to redeem us. He offers us the forgiveness of our sin and the blessing of life eternal through Jesus Christ. This gospel—good news—message is what Christmas announces. Quite apart from the religious and non-religious traditions we have packed around this holiday, the essential message is what God announced through the prophecy he gave to Zechariah, John the Baptist’s dad, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people (Luke 1:68).
